Hi Everyone,

I think most of the "results" to my original post on this topic are now in, so I thought I'd give a summary.  The term is really open to a number of different interpretations.  The most popular response was (b); Items (a) and (c) were chosen more infrequently, but each an equal number of times.  Several people interjected ideas that I hadn't previously considered.  Item (c) was worded improperly - we all, of course, have 4 grandparents.  I apologize for that and, hopefully, my error didn't skew the results too much.

Option (a) was a definition used by Stats Canada in a recent Ethnic Diversity Survey.  It's kind of tricky, but it's major difference is that it considers the immigrant to constitute the "first-generation."  My initial reaction was that I defined "third-generation" differently than they did and that this would affect how I interpreted the reports based on study of the EDS.  This poll, along with discussions on the Rootsweb message boards and elsewhere on the web about "Who's on First?" show that there is a considerable split of opinion on the issue and that there really is no definitive understanding of the term - although we all tend to use it (perhaps somewhat casually).

If anyone wants to keep the discussion going, I won't mind in the least ;0)

Thank you all for responding.

Hi Everyone,

I am working on a term paper for university and need a consensus on the specific genealogical definition of "third-generation" when it is used, for example, to say "I am third-generation _________" (e.g. Canadian, English, French, Ukrainian, etc.).

Does it mean that:

a) both of a person's parents were born in the reference country, or
b) at least one parent and one grandparent were born in the reference country, or
c) both grandparents were born in the reference country, or
d) something else entirely (please elaborate).

I would like to get as many responses as possible, since individual impressions of what the term means are as important to my paper discussion as the formal definition (which I also haven't been able to find in the dictionary - only something about computer technology - go figure ;0)

Thank you,

Hi Charlie and all:

I followed the links and read these articles. They were very interesting and thought provoking. Managing my computer files and the various internet favourites that include logins and passwords (many websites require registration, not just to sell stuff) takes a lot of my time. If the "bus" hit me, I can imagine that someone would have quite a time getting my on-going e-mail (in my webmail box at Shaw) and cancelling the various e-mail lists that I'm on, and cancelling web site connections. And that's not even counting the computer work needed to preserve my genealogy files!

This is a HUGE topic - which includes what to do with my genealogy that's on the computer in various forms (in Legacy, Word documents, PDFs, and images). Where does this info go to? Should I designate someone to go through it, print it, put in on DVDs? Anyways, you see the big questions here.

I think that this would be a great topic to expand to an article in the Chinook, a speaker (panel?) at an AFHS meeting, a "blog", a speaker (panel?) for a special Saturday or Sunday meeting, a topic at the next FamilyRoots Conference, ongoing e-mail subject on dist-gen, or all-of-the-above.

Since I sometimes lose e-mail links, I created a Word document from the information at the links that Charlie sent us. If you would like me to send you a copy, just e-mail me at lornalaughton@... off list.

Many of us are elderly, but as family historians we probably receive more email than

the average senior.

The last two issues of "EMAIL Essentials", an e-mail newsletter that I receive, has

written about access to your e-mails in case of incapacity or death. Links are

provided to another on-line publication, "OFFICE Watch", which has the articles.

For "Email after death" browse to:

For "More Email after death" go to:

Both are two page items. you need to scroll to the bottom of the page to select the

Both of these links contain advertising. The problems mention may not be applicable

Hi all,

Rather than attend the meeting tonight, I am spending the time doing the final draft of the April issue so it can be out before the April meeting. My workday is very hectic with many projects, so at this time I cannot afford the time to attend the meeting. I hope you will fill me in on details necessary or of interest for the next Chinook or for the SIGs I coordinate.

I am happy to report that I already have several stories as well as one column for the July Chinook. This is great because I will be taking vacation in May and, even though May 1st is the deadline for submissions, I would love a headstart for the July issue. Another important date to consider for submissions is that for the October issue as many of you may be taking vacation in August, and August 1 is the deadline for submissions for October.

So it would be great if you could plan ahead of the deadlines for these two issues. Then we can go on vacation, guilt-free (at least as far as the Chinook is concerned)!

Since I will not be at my booth at the meeting, regarding AGE business: for those who are waiting for books, please email me directly to arrange a pickup or delivery. For research or other clients: please contact me via email or phone as noted below.

I imagine there were many people who did not understand the
question as it was worded,
and now realize they would rather have answered "yes" to allow
access after
92 years.

Is there any recourse that can be taken to challenge how it was
conducted/worded?

What if people were able to individually go in and change their
answer now,
especially if they were publicly made aware of what really
happened and the
consequences of it. (A large number of people doing this would
certainly
have some effect on it).

Census records has always been a main starting point for
genealogy research,
and without that we are at a huge loss. It will be even more
difficult to
research in the future with different lifestyle patterns being
prevalent.

Hi all,

For anyone interested in Ukrainian genealogy, there is a new book out. Author John D. Pihach, Chairperson of the East European Genealogical Society in Winnipeg, Book Title: Ukrainian Genealogy: A Beginner's Guide. It has 272 pages.

The book is selling for $54.95 (cloth) and $34.95 (paper), usually with shipping & handling/GST added. I have a source where you can purchase the paperback book for $30 plus $5.00 shipping & handling with no GST added. The source is http://ukrainiangenealogist.tripod.com/ (I am not fond of tripod because of the pop-ups but some pages are worth the inconvenience). I personally do not gain anything by notifying you of this book or source, other than the satisfaction that you are receiving the best value. I have not ordered my copy yet, but the reviews are very positive.

I have blindcopied all those who ever asked to join the Ukrainian SIG (44 people) or who emailed me about interest in Ukrainian information, because some are not members of Alberta Family Histories Society. I hope you will join and also join the SIG. It doesn't matter where you are and the benefits of belonging to AFHS is you will receive Chinook, our quarterly publication. In this journal, there is a SIG corner where often Ukrainian SIG information will be covered, which you would not otherwise receive. As well, you can place two free queries per member per publication year. So it is well worth the price. Ask me for details and I will send you the form.

For those not on dist-gen and who missed the information about the two tours to the Ukraine - one in June and the other in September 2007, I have posted the messages at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ukrainiangenealogy

Currently this group is open to everyone to read without signing up with yahoo.

For those on the Ukrainian SIG list that I am blindcopying, please let me know if you wish your name removed. If you are reading this and did not receive a version that had UkrainianSIG beside your name, email me and I will add you. Please do not email dist-gen. Email me at age@...

Hi Folks:

Once again our AFHS has been invited to participate in the annual Heritage Fair.

The Calgary and District Heritage Fair provides a forum for young people in Grades 4 to 9 to learn about their Canadian heritage. Students choose a subject, do research and present a display or program at the Heritage Fair. Over 300 students from Calgary and district schools participated in last year’s Fair.

Originated and supported in part by the Historica Foundation, heritage fairs take place in cities and communities all over Canada on the same day. Museums Alberta and the ATA Social Studies Council have organized the program for eleven years. This year the Calgary and District Fair will once again be held at City Hall on Saturday, May 5th, from 9 am. to 1 pm.

We have been asked if we might provide a few adjudicators who would be required to examine (in pairs) a number of exhibits and score them on their quality.
If you would be interested in making this contribution of your time and talent for this significant community venture with Calgary's young students please call Annette Parte (work 271-5522 or
home 873-1911).

AFHS will be presenting a book award to the best family history exhibit.

Cheers

Congratulations to Peggy Franko, who did such a great interview on the
W-5 program this evening. The forensic work that has gone into this
project is phenomenal! Not sure which answer would be best, Peggy, but
as you said, better to know one way or the other. Good luck.

My children know me as one who regularly reads the obituaries and my sister says if you want to find me, look for the nearest cemetery. So they would not question that these pulled at my heartstrings. I thought you might be interested as well.

Just a reminder that the Family History Coaching session for March is on this Saturday, March 31,  between 10:00 and noon on the 4th Floor of the Central Library.  This program is staffed by volunteers from the Alberta Family Histories Society and offers one-on-one assistance with your family history questions.  So, bring your questions, bring your friends.  Coffee is provided and we're very friendly.

The next monthly meeting of AFHS will take place on Monday, April 2, 2007 at First Christian Reformed Church (3818 14A St SW).

For the Basics Session at 6:30 pm, Linda Holdaway will give hints and tips for finding cemetery records and obituaries.

The general meeting will be held at 7:00 pm.

For the Main Program at 8:00 pm, Jacqueline Alford will do a presentation about Funerary Art.

It has come to my attention that some advertising regarding our meetings had a mistake. The monthly meeting in May will be held as usual on the first Monday of the month, May 7 (not May 2).

The Annual General Meeting will take place at the May meeting.
