Hi Everyone:

Several weeks ago I read an article in the Calgary Herald about the Federal Government cutting funding to a "granting" program that provided grants to museums in Canada. I was annoyed that yet again some funding for our Canadian history and heritage was being withdrawn. Museums in Canada should be collecting, preserving, investigating, studying, and displaying our ancestors' history and artefacts. But how can Canadian Museums buy back artefacts & photographsset up buildings with proper conservation conditions, hire professional conservators and archivists, attract students, advertise their displays, create & maintain professional websites and catalogues, etc. without funding. I don't think that this is a "user pays" situation - our governments (federal, provincial, and municipal) should be funding heritage projects just because we have history and we're worth it. The British Isles and the United States are advanced in capturing every bit of history for fun and profit, and their actions have added to their national attractions. Anyways, there is my rant for the day.

I was reminded of this situation by an article in Gordon Watts column of the Global Gazette (online at http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazgw/gazgw-0093.htm ). You can read Gordon's comments. A petition has been started to present to the government about the grant situation. I linked to it from Gordon Watt's article and signed it. I encourage all of you to sign it too. I received an e-mail confirming my signature. After all, if Lois Sparling (with only a bit of help from others) can get the historical Census released, we can take on the world of museum funding and win too!

Hi again folks:

If you saw the message below a couple of weeks ago and are considering offering a little of your time to plan next year's Historic Calgary week the time is perfect to let me know that you would be willing to help.
The next planning meeting is on Monday afternoon.
AFHS would like to be involved again and needs to help a little in putting this wonderful event together.

I know you will enjoy working with a fine group of history-focused volunteers.

Call me at 254-2293 if I can help with more information.

Once more we have been invited by the Chinook Country Historical Society to participate in their highly successful annual Historic Calgary Week being planned for the end of July 2007.

Of course the AFHS has accepted their invitation. It provides excellent exposure for our Society  - a great opportunity to increase public awareness.

In the past we have provided speakers for an evening lecture at  the Central Park Memorial Library. We have also opened our Library and warmly invited the public to visit our collection.

There are several requests that have been tabled at the recent planning meeting for the event and we ask all members to offer their suggestions and ideas-
  1. The planning committee is open to suggestions for a theme. It should relate to Calgary of course and perhaps tie with some other event happening in 2007 in this City.
  2. There are tasks to be performed if it is to be a success. There are four committees to be struck,
	Programme
 Brochure Preparation
 Promotion
 Facilitees
If you or a friend would like to contribute some of your time and talent in this worthwhile and exciting event please contact me by email or phone (254-2293) and I can give you more details.
Cheers

Good moring all,

Just a reminder that once again the Alberta Family Histories Society is collecting non perishable food items for the food bank.  Freda Stewart is going to have boxes at the church CLEARLY MARKED for our donations.  Please make sure that you put your food items into our boxes as the Church is also collecting for the food bank on Sunday, Dec. 3.  We do not want to get our items mixed with the church items.

Also we are looking at having some treats for our Christmas meeting.  About 1/2 dozen cookies, etc. would be acceptable.

Thank you,

Hi Folks:
July 27, 2007 may seem like a long way off at this moment  but I can assure you that the planning committee working on the next Historic Calgary Week is busy.

HISTORIC CALGARY WEEK  is July 27 to August 5, 2007   Mark your calendar if you have one for 2007

While the committee is still looking for some volunteer help the principal concern at this moment is to establish a theme.

If you have any suggestions that might tie with other events in Calgary next year I would be pleased to have your ideas to pass on to thr planners. If you would also like to help. please let me know.

Cheers

I did this several years ago to tape and used Director's Chair (as
much because they were close to me & around the same price as the
others I phoned), but there were only 6? reels and we really wanted
them. I don't remember it as cheap, but also, not as outrageous.

See yellow pages 2256 and phone some of the choices and choose the
one that you feel most comfortable with.

Hi there:

There are companies in town taht do this sort of thing. Many years ago
I had an old file copied to a VHS tape. I'm sure today the same thing
could be done to a DVD.

The Basics Session at 6:30 pm will feature two of our members. Alan Cassley and John Banack will share how they published their own family history books.

For the Main Session, a panel of experts will give suggestions to solve stumbling blocks (previously submitted by our members). Come learn how experts break through “brick walls”.

We will be collecting donations for the food bank. Look for marked bins in the foyer.

Also, we will have some treats for our Christmas meeting. About 1/2 dozen cookies, etc. would be acceptable.

It means sorrow or woe - on tombstone can mean "woe unto".

It seems to be a common word in Yiddish, Icelandic/Norse, Romanian, etc. In
English the word evolved into woe but not before it gave us the word "veil",
which used to be worn as a sign of sorrow or mourning.

1913 Websters - etymological dictionary
Oxford Journals on etymology (roots/history, sounds, meanings of words)

Hope this helps and if someone finds something different, I will be
interested to hear about it.

Thanks Xenia and John
John's site is great if you know the language you want translated (and
there aren't too many choices), but since I didn't know this language,
it didn't help.
Xenia, I might have know you would know or find the meaning!! For this
cemetery entry, the burial name is Jost, (first name) Walczeck, so I am
thinking of entering the monument last name as Walczeck vei.
Waliszewski Jost, (first name) and then do a double entry under Jost as
the last name.
Thanks to both of you for your help - and I have learned something new
again!!

Hi Folks:

The planning committee for Historic Calgary Week 2007 met recently and are proposing the following as the theme for this year's week.

Soddies to Skyscrapers - Our Booms on the Bow

Any comments - negative or positive?

Any activities that come to mind when you read this theme title?

If you'd like to share your talent as a volunteer with this committee please let me know.

Cheers

BILL
