Good evening all,

I will have the t-shirts on Monday night.  There has been another charge which I did not know of until yesterday.  Times Two had to order our shirts in from B.C., so there is a shipping cost.  I did not know that they had to order the shirts from out of province.  The extra charge amounts to 58 cents each.  The sizes S-XL is now $17.43 and XXXL & XXXXL are now $19.03  I am sorry for the inconvenience. Also there were some people who ordered dark colors and I was told that in order to keep the colors that were ordered, then Darren had to have the imprint on these shirts put on in white.  He was able to do this at no extra cost to us.  He also had to put in two orders for shirts, as there were a couple of other shirts ordered at the last minute, so he is willing to eat the cost of the other shipping costs.  I thanked him very much for doing this for us.

Thank you,
Heather

Birney researcher is one of my contacts who responded to an offer to help
find relatives in the 1911 Calgary census. Does anyone on the mailing list
have connections to these early families?

Fred Birney, a long-time employee of the Alberta Hotel, died in the summer
of 1914 leaving a widow called Minnie and six children. His 4 children from
an earlier marriage to Margaret and Walter (one of Minnie's children) grew
up with relatives in the Calgary-Midnapore area. There are connections to
Bannister, McKevitt, Copas families with known burials at Union, Burnsland
and Midnapore.

Cemetery office does not have a burial record for Minnie (Mary?) Birney or
Clarence Birney so she may have remarried if she stayed in the area. There
are several unconnected Birney names in the Calgary area.

Tonight at the AFHS meeting you will have a chance to purchase our new CD which features Queen’s Park’s Military Section along with other military information for the SPECIAL PRICE of $20.00.

This CD has 5000 records and almost as many photos.  There is also a list of Albertan Airman who gave their lives during WW II.

To add substance to this CD we have included a list of Military Websites to help people with their research.

You don't say that you have checked anywhere else already, so I assume you have not emailed the local newspaper and asked them if they will look up for you?

Their archives appear not to be online yet, so you could also ask if and when they will archive obits.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oct. 19, 2005

Saskatchewan Archives 05-924

HOMESTEAD INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE WEB

Saskatchewan Archives is launching a new online database on October 21 which will allow, for the first time, genealogists and researchers around the globe to have access to Saskatchewan’s homestead information via the World Wide Web.  The information is available online at www.saskhomesteads.com and may be purchased as a stand-alone, searchable CD-ROM.

The Saskatchewan Homestead Index database contains 360,000 references to the men and women who, under the terms of The Dominion Lands Act, took part in the homestead process in the area now known as Saskatchewan from 1872 to 1930.

It includes those who sold or bought North West Métis or South African veteran scrip or received soldier grants following service in the First World War.

“The digital index will, for the first time, allow researchers to gain a better understanding of how Métis scrip became a commodity for intense speculation during the settlement period,” Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said.  “It will also make it easier for researchers to access the records of women who filed for homesteads in Saskatchewan.”

“This is only the first step in making the homestead records more accessible using new technology,” Saskatchewan’s Provincial Archivist Trevor Powell said.  “Each year, members of the public use some 9,000 homestead files and having the index on-line will mean that they can locate the files they need and contact the Archives for copies before ever leaving home.  We are very much in the preliminary planning stages, but we hope that the records themselves will some day be completely digitized and available to researchers on the World Wide Web.”

The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society and Saskatchewan Archives Board worked in partnership through an advisory committee since 2003 to get the homestead index on-line and on CD-ROM.

President of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society, Rocky Sample of Pangman, commended the committee for its work, noting that there has long been an avid interest in the homestead records on the part of local and family historians.  “Having easy access via the Internet to the homestead index will be a real boon to genealogists and others interested in the history of the settlement period in Saskatchewan,” Sample said.

Completion of the project was made possible through the support of a number of working partners and sponsors including Information Services Corporation (ISC), assisted by EDS and ISM Canada; James Richardson International/Pioneer Grain Company Ltd.; the Métis National Council; the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation and the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST).  The project took nearly three years to complete at a cost of more than $200,000 after all direct-dollar and in-kind contributions and volunteer hours are taken into consideration.

A lifetime ago, I'd talked about getting a copy of "The Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference" book.  The folks that were interested were: Jim Ward, Carol Lee, Heather Jaremko, Helen Backhouse, Lorna Laughton, Bob Hauswirth and Eva & Roy Kinnear.  As Helen was interested too, the library may have a copy of it by now.  Anyway, I very recently lucked into a copy of my own and have it on my desk.  There is an index, so I can look things up easily.  If anyone is interested in the AFHS, I'd be glad to do some look ups.

Hello,

For those of you doing military research, you might be interested to know that the Library and Archives of Canada Genealogy Centre's database for those people who enlisted in WW1 does not include navy personnel. (When I read more closely, I realize the key word is soldiers)!  However, you can still order the attestation papers for your navy ancestors by calling the Genealogy Reference Desk at 1-866-578-7777 (toll free) or 1-613-996-7458.  Should you wish to order the files of navy personnel, the same rules apply as getting the files of the soldiers included in the web site's database.

Has anyone using Passage Express Standard Edition successfully burned a CD
of their project? The program is really great as far as entering stuff and
getting it made. I just can't get it to open when I put the CD in. If I go
to My Computer, it shows in the Devices with Removable Storage, and if I
right click, then click on Autoplay it opens there. If I go to open, it
shows the files, two of them being autoplay, and RunMe. This is fine for
me, but a hassle for some of our relatives. I have been to the Passage
Express Support Forum where there was a question about this, but it dealt
with the Deluxe Edition. A promise of "looking into" so far has had no
results and Christmas is creeping up. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking just now if I right click on the CD and go to open where the files
show, if I right click on Autorun, which looks like a notepad, there is an
option "install". What does that mean? Do I have to install that after the
CD is burned?

The English/Welsh SIG will be meeting at the AFHS library this coming Tuesday,
December 13th (a change from the scheduled meeting date to accommodate
Christmas). As well as tapping the English/Welsh research experience of the
group we will talk about what our ancestors (and ourselves) ate in England and
how it was cooked. Find out why oatmeal was a common food in Scotland and the
North of England but not in the diet of those who lived in the Midlands or South

Tea and cookies will be served (contributions to the food will be welcome) and,

3. Weird Words: Lorinery
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The craft of making various metal parts of a horse's harness.

Lorinery is rare enough that there's no entry for it in the Oxford
English Dictionary; it seems to be relatively recent and not at all
common in print, though it is found quite a lot online. The oldest
example I know (for which many thanks to the staff of the Oxford
English Dictionary) is from the Times in 1923. Lorinery is carried
out by loriners; the Worshipful Company of Loriners, one of the
livery companies of the City of London, says: "A loriner makes and
sells bits, bridles, spurs, stirrups and the minor metal items of a
horse's harness, together with the saddle tree." There aren't any
loriners in the City of London nowadays, the centre of the British
craft being in Walsall, which is perhaps why the Company no longer
has a London headquarters (a "hall", in the jargon). Samuel Pepys
noted in his diary for 14 May 1668: "Thence with Lord Brouncker to
Loriners'-hall, by Mooregate, a hall I never heard of before." (He
wasn't alone, it transpires: though "loriner" and the Worshipful
Company are both medieval in date, this is the first reference to
their hall anywhere.) The older form of the word is "lorimer", the
source of the family name; both derive from the Old French word
"lorenier", which is from Latin "lorum", a strap or bridle.

The iRobot Roomba Discovery is nice. It is much better than the first
model. I like mine, but I can use all the help I can get. Moreover,
having the Roomba is an incentive to minimize the clutter.

Also, the iRobot Scooba, for those who can use all the help available.

This person has too much money, IMHO, but it is a fun site to see.

I bought this as a gift for my own November 60th birthday and highly
recommend it.

My new pet, i-Dog, and I are listening to tunes from my iPod Shuffle. I bought it at Toys r us for $22.99 It comes with a cable to connect to an ipod and listen using its microphone or also attach to earphone the way I am doing in the photo. It has flashing lights keyed to the music. Besides the lights, it moves its ears, shakes its head, barks and makes whirring sounds depending on its mood! For more info about it, see http://laptopmag.com/Review/Hasbro-I-Dog.htm

Hi there:

This could be an interesting imaging program:

Thumbnail program recommended by TechTV: http://jalbum.net/. I used it
extensively in my personal website www.hubert.ca.
