The Alberta Genealogical Society has been working on this project for
some time with the goal of completing it in our Centennial year.

The AGS Homestead Centennial Project will be available online in a
fully searchable format. We hope to have the first phase (of
approximately 50,000 names) available within the next month.

Watch for it on the Alberta Genealogical Society website at http://abgensoc.ca.

Please note also that this is a new URL for the AGS website.

Hi Gordon - food bank boxes will be delivered tomorrow. Closer to the
meeting date will you put out a blurb reminding people about the collection
and ask them to review the list you had on prior. I asked if there was
anything special they needed and the answer was 'everything'. They are quite
low again, especially on protein items and lunch items for brown baggers.

This is a public thanks to all those members of the Celtic SIG who have voted to buy three (3) chairs for the AFHS Library. Now we need to hear three (3) cheers!
Having three more chairs to sit on will certainly help not only that SIG but all the others.
Thank you for making future meetings more comfortable.

Several months ago I mentioned to those attending a Computer SIG meeting
that Dennis Ridenour, who was supposed to have been in Calgary for the
October seminar, was preparing a newsletter on the subject of digital
imaging. I received my first copy today. At the risk of upsetting our
webmaster I'm copying it below. The formatting disappeared in the
process but the content is OK. If your interested in getting the
newsletter contact Dennis at the address below,

Article 1-1

Here it is, 2005! Wow!

Here’s hoping 2005 is the best year ever for the entire genealogical
community.

I’d like to thank each of you for your encouraging e-mail and your
enthusiasm for learning more about digital photography. Those of you who
expressed an interest in staying with us and following our explorations
into the world of “digital genealogy” are going to go on a journey with
a map. Not a physical map, like that of the country, but a verbal map of
articles covering most of the information and directions needed to use
digital cameras, tools and methods in the pursuit of genealogical endeavors.

Carla and I have always wanted to write a book, and with your help, we
are going to do an online book to guide genealogists step-by-step
through the sometimes confusing and difficult world of digital cameras,
scanners, and software. Those who wish to be passive can sit back and
read and hopefully enjoy. Those who wish to be active can respond to our
articles, and contribute to the discussion of topics. They can ask
questions, and/or relate their own experiences and techniques to help
make the book as responsive to the needs of the genealogist as possible.

The book itself will be made up of chapters and subchapters, each of
which will be sent out as one or more issues of this “newsletter.” I
plan to send a newsletter on or near the15th of each month, with maybe
some in between. At the end of each subchapter, where warranted, there
will be section, which consists of reader’s opinions, comments and/or
suggestions.

In addition to the newsletter article, I will post each completed
chapter or subchapter on the Web in a .PDF format. Anyone having the
link will be able to go to the Web and download one, some, or all of the
chapters, and print and assemble their own book.

Carla and I are excited about this project, and with your help, we think
we can make it work.

We will start with a basic Table of Contents and build from there. The
tentative title for the book is Digital Imaging for Genealogists and the
preliminary Table of Contents is as follows:

Table of Contents

I. Introduction

Copy box

Out of necessity, some of the text for some of the headings will be
written after the main parts of the book have been completed. But,
essentially after we have completed the project, each of you will have a
complete book.

Over the next year, we will try to put out at least one article a month,
covering one or more of the above subjects. We will shoot for the 15th
of each month, with maybe some extras during some months. Since this is
the first article of January, it will be called Article 1-1. If we were
to add another article later in the month, it would become Article 1-2
and so on. February would then start with Article 2-3. This way you will
always know if you have received all the articles. If you are missing
one just drop me an email, and I will send it to you.

Just a little side note—

We travel quite often in our motor home, and are set up to fully
function on the Internet so this will not interfere with our work on
“the book”. However, we’d like to also add some of our interesting
travel experiences, so there will probably be some travelogue in the
newsletter. It won’t be in the book, but I have found that readers
sometimes like the break. We often come across items that we think might
be of interest to the readers, this can be hardware, software, or just a
new way of looking at things. These items or reviews may also creep into
the newsletter portion.

Logistics—

You received this email addressed to you and several other people. I
broke the whole group in many smaller groups to avoid hitting my mail
server with the entire list at once. I assure you that there will be an
abundance of information in each newsletter mailing, and I have no
expectations as to how much the readership will want to get involved. As
the reader, you are free to participate as much or as little as you
want; you can just read, read and comment, comment without reading, or
simply wait and download the PDF files.

Please reply when you receive “this” mailing so that I’ll know if it’s
working properly. Also, please let me know if you decide that you don’t
want to receive future mailings or if you have any problems with this
type of e-mail.

Thanks to all that have decided to come on this journey, we are looking
forward to this year. —Dennis and Carla Ridenour

For each passenger, their full name, occupation, nationality, age and

	 o Galway (17 sailings)

And destinations:

Hi,
We have a family friend who is trying to search his family from the
Ukraine. We don't seem to have anyone here that seems to have experience
in this area, however, they do have someone who has done their family in
Germany and Russia. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Donna

Critical question:

Is the family Ukrainian, Russian, Jewish, Ger-Rus (Luth/Cath) or Mennonite?

Then answer will suggest different kinds of resources.

If you don't know - identifying the surname(s) &/or specific geography would
be a start/provide clues.

Hi Donna,

I am the coordinator of the AFHS - Ukrainian SIG. As Judith Rempel already
mentioned the ethnicity is important in starting the search. As I'm sure you
know everyone in past and present Ukraine is not necessarily of Ukrainian
ancestry.

Also the religion is important because that affects where and how records
were kept as most records pre-revolution were documented and kept by
churches.

There are civil records, such as military ones since every able-bodied man
was required to put in an obligatory service term.

For all of these records - whether affected by ethnicity, religion or
civil - the primary knowledge needed before beginning the search overseas is
to pinpoint the ancestral village including oblast and raion (sometimes
spelled rayon). I spent years searching blindly eventually finding 5
villages all with the same name as my grandparents' village. It wasn't until
I found a document that showed the oblast and raion that I was able to
correctly identify the exact village and then to find records pertaining to
my family in the Ukraine. Also some records depending upon the time frame
and location can be found in other surrounding (former ruling) countries,
such as Austria, Poland, and Russia.

For more information on locating Ukrainian and other East European roots see
my slides on the AFHS website - http://www.afhs.ab.ca/aids/talks/

Also I gave a longer talk at Family Roots 2004 on East European research.
That should be available in the AFHS Family Roots 2004 CD but I do not see
where this can be purchased. Perhaps it is not available yet. If it is, can
someone let us know.

Meanwhile if your friend wants to join our virtual SIG, have him or her
email me and include the family names, location and any other information
that may help him or her connect to others who may have the same ancestors
or come from the same ancestral village. Already someone has connected to
another person in our group who could help her with her Ukrainian roots.

Hi, You have all been such a help in tracing my family!! I've now reached a
block. We are so fortunate to have death, marriage and birth records
available in B.C.
Carl E. Isteed homesteaded in Alberta. We have information through you and the
family about Carl and his family who moved from Marmora, Ontario to Alberta.
Carl took title in 1917. According to family information, my mother Thelma
Isteed was born in Wainwright March 21, 1914. There are no papers to prove
this. My grandmother Myrtle and Carl Isteed divorced and she remarried. My
mother and siblings took on (they were not legally adopted) her new married
name of Adam. We cannot find any marriage record or divorce record for Myrtle
and Carl. My mother died in 1955 and my grandmother in 1972. We just found a
death record for Carl Isteed, in Portland Oregon - 1951. Carl's sister Nellie
Isteed married Walter Huntingford publisher of the Wainwright Star. His son
came to visit us a couple of years ago. If I knew this was an approximate
date of my mother's birth, we could send for the records, however, is there
any way to verify this information before sending for the record?
Thanks everyone!
Donna

Several months ago I mentioned to those attending a Computer SIG meeting

that Dennis Ridenour, who was supposed to have been in Calgary for the
October seminar, was preparing a newsletter on the subject of digital
imaging. I received my first copy today. At the risk of upsetting our
webmaster I'm copying it below. The formatting disappeared in the
process but the content is OK. If your interested in getting the
newsletter contact Dennis at the address below,

Article 1-1

Here it is, 2005! Wow!

Here's hoping 2005 is the best year ever for the entire genealogical
community.

I'd like to thank each of you for your encouraging e-mail and your
enthusiasm for learning more about digital photography. Those of you who

expressed an interest in staying with us and following our explorations
into the world of "digital genealogy" are going to go on a journey with
a map. Not a physical map, like that of the country, but a verbal map of

articles covering most of the information and directions needed to use
digital cameras, tools and methods in the pursuit of genealogical
endeavors.

The book itself will be made up of chapters and subchapters, each of
which will be sent out as one or more issues of this "newsletter." I
plan to send a newsletter on or near the15th of each month, with maybe
some in between. At the end of each subchapter, where warranted, there
will be section, which consists of reader's opinions, comments and/or
suggestions.

I. Introduction
a. Forward

Just a little side note-

We travel quite often in our motor home, and are set up to fully
function on the Internet so this will not interfere with our work on
"the book". However, we'd like to also add some of our interesting
travel experiences, so there will probably be some travelogue in the
newsletter. It won't be in the book, but I have found that readers
sometimes like the break. We often come across items that we think might

be of interest to the readers, this can be hardware, software, or just a

new way of looking at things. These items or reviews may also creep into

the newsletter portion.

Logistics-

You received this email addressed to you and several other people. I
broke the whole group in many smaller groups to avoid hitting my mail
server with the entire list at once. I assure you that there will be an
abundance of information in each newsletter mailing, and I have no
expectations as to how much the readership will want to get involved. As

the reader, you are free to participate as much or as little as you
want; you can just read, read and comment, comment without reading, or
simply wait and download the PDF files.

Please reply when you receive "this" mailing so that I'll know if it's
working properly. Also, please let me know if you decide that you don't
want to receive future mailings or if you have any problems with this
type of e-mail.

Thanks to all that have decided to come on this journey, we are looking
forward to this year. -Dennis and Carla Ridenour

This was posted on Dick Eastman's online newsletter, and I have also contacted Holly and Jenni about posting it to Dist-Gen. Having received their permission tonight, I must advise that Jenni informed me the city council will be meeting Tuesday, Feb. 1, and any emails, and definitely postal mail, will possibly be missed by tomorrow's deadline - but it might not hurt to send it anyway. Jenni has advised she will keep me posted of any updates regarding this proposed project, in order that I might pass the information on.

Hello Dick,

As you know, Logan City received, through donation, the resources of the Everton Library
(approximately 80,000 books, periodicals, etc). There IS a room available in the new City building
and funds available in Logan Library's budget to prepare the room to house the collection and
make it available to the public. However, there is some concern among city council members
whether the public will really use the collection if it is made available. We need to thank them for
acquiring this priceless genealogical research collection and making it available as soon as
          possible.

The council does not understand how genealogists will use this collection; they don't believe that
anyone would come from out of state. So they are content to leave the bulk of it in storage. We need
to let them know that genealogists plan their vacations around great research repositories such as
this. I'm sure many of you are anxious and willing to participate in conferences being planned
          around this enormous collection.

To let them know that you, as a genealogist, NEED this collection and would use it if it were
available to the public, please send an email to jparrish@... or send a letter to Mayor
Doug Thompson 255 North Main St., Logan, Utah 84321 before January 31, 2005.

Thank you for taking time to let others know about this situation. Please pass the word.

          Best Regards,

          Holly
