Unfortunately the address is at a different site which provides a free
calander service. It's free lots of people use it so it can be difficult to
get through at times.

Explorer has an option that allows the page to be stored on your computer,
if you have this set then once you have a bad page it stays in Explorer's
memory until you force it to actually go to the original page.

I sometimes have to try numerous times when I need to change info on the
calander

#2582 From: Mary Arthur <arthurm@...>
Date: Fri Mar 26, 2004 1:07 am
Subject: google tips
arthurm@...
Send Email Send Email

David Pogue is a computer journalist for the NYT and CBS. He writes:

   Meeting the Googlers

Set the TiVo! This Sunday morning, "CBS News Sunday Morning" will
begin with my report on Google, the Web search page-slash-cultural
deity that's expected to go public this Spring — the biggest in
high-tech history, with a valuation as high as $25 billion.

It was a real kick to interview Google's executives and staff. Along
the way, I asked each interview subject to name their favorite Google
tips and tricks.

Few of the tricks made it into the TV segment — but you, the shrewd
subscriber to this newsletter, get them hot off the press.

   • Download and install the Google toolbar. Not only does it put the
Google search box into your browser full-time, but it also blocks
pop-up ads and fills in forms for you. For Windows at
http://toolbar.google.com. (Ad blocking, form-filling and Google's
search box are already built into the Apple's Web browser, Safari.)

   • Phrase your question in the form of an answer. "After all, you're
not looking for Web pages that ask your question," explains director of
technology Craig Silverstein. "You're looking for pages that answer
it."

So instead of typing, "What is the average rainfall in the Amazon
basin?", you might get better results by typing "The average rainfall
in the Amazon basin is."

   • This is an old one, but very important: Put quotes around phrases
that must be searched together. If you put quotes around "electric
curtains," Google won't waste your time finding one set of Web pages
containing the word "electric" and another set containing the word
"curtains."

   • Similarly, put a hyphen right before any word you want screened out.
If you're looking up dolphins, for example, you'll have to wade through
a million Miami Dolphins pages unless you search for "dolphins -Miami."

   • Google is a global White Pages and Yellow Pages. Search for
"phonebook:home depot norwalk, ct," Google instantly produces the
address and phone number of the Norwalk Home Depot. This works with
names ("phonebook:robert jones las vegas, NV") as well as businesses.

Don't put any space after "phonebook." And in all of the following
examples, don't type the quotes I'm showing you here.

   • Google is a package tracker. Type a FedEx or UPS package number
(just the digits); when you click Search, Google offers a link to its
tracking information.

   • Google is a calculator. Type in an equation ("32+2345*3-234=").
Click Search to see the answer.

   • Google is a units-of-measurement converter. Type "teaspoons in a
gallon," for example, or "centimeters in a foot." Click Search to see
the answer.

   • Google is a stock ticker. Type in AAPL or MSFT, for example, to see
a link to the current Apple or Microsoft stock price, graphs, financial
news and so on.

   • Google is an atlas. Type in an area code, like 212, to see a
Mapquest map of the area.

   • Google is Wal-Mart's computer. Type in a UPC bar code number, such
as "036000250015," to see the description of the product you've just
"scanned in." (Thanks to the Google Blog, http://google.blogspace.com,
for this tip and the next couple.)

   • Google is an aviation buff. Type in a flight number like "United 22"
for a link to a map of that flight's progress in the air. Or type in
the tail number you see on an airplane for the full registration form
for that plane.

   • Google is the Department of Motor Vehicles. Type in a VIN (vehicle
identification number, which is etched onto a plate, usually on the
door frame, of every car), like "JH4NA1157MT001832," to find out the
car's year, make and model.

   • For hours of rainy-day entertainment, visit http://labs.google.com.
Here, you'll find links to new, half-finished Google experiments-like
Google Voice, in which you call (650) 623-6706, speak the words you
want to search for and then open your browser to view the results.
Disclaimer: It wasn't working when I tried it. (Ditto a lot of these
experiments.)

   • Poke around the "Services & Tools" link on the Google.com home page
and you'll find some of the better-known lesser-known Google features,
if that makes any sense.

For example, there's Froogle (product search), News, Groups (Internet
discussion boards), Google Catalogs (hundreds of scanned-in product
catalogs), Images (find graphics and photos from other people's Web
sites), Blogger (publish your own online journal), Google language
translation, Google Answers (pay a couple of bucks to have a
professional researcher find the answers for you) and much more.

Pretty soon you'll need Google just to search Google!

Could everyone who has update access to the online Calendar please email me
as I have installed our own AFHS calendar rather than using the old one.
The old calendar was not on our own site but was housed on another site that
was becoming overwhelmed with all the people trying to get to it.

A number of people have made comment that it was getting harder and more
frustrating to get to the old calendar. Please use the link on the main AFHS
page to see the new calander

I have had this problem for about a week now. I used Internet
Explorer to go to the Windows Update page. I have done this a number of
times in the past with no problem. I was trying to download a non-critical
update for Windows 98SE and it gets as far as the Review and Install
Updates after selecting just one. I press the Install Now button and no
download starts. Sometimes the "button" stays pressed for a moment like it
is going to do something, and then nothing happens.
I have even tried to download a file to a folder from the catalogue
rather than going through a download and install. Neither works.
I have checked my firewall settings. They seem fine. Just in case, I
removed IE and Windows Explorer and let Zone Alarm find again.
      Any one have suggestions?

Her crowning achievement was the publication of a 670 page book on her Byam family in Canada, covering 200 years and 8 generations. Calgary Military History Society Members
Jack Dunn & Bob McPherson

Following is an interesting response to an official query made to our own
Alberta government.

I'm sure others have been wondering about the impact of PIPA legislation on
our work:

---------------------
>The Alberta Personal Information Protection Act does not apply if you are
collecting, using or disclosing personal information for home or family
purposes such as when an individual is compiling and publishing their own
family history for their personal use.

>Private Sector Privacy Email: pspinfo@... <mailto:pspinfo@...>
>Fax: (780) 427-1120
>Private Sector Privacy Website: http://www.psp.gov.ab.ca
-----------------------

The inquirer has requested privacy regarding his identity.

Now my concern is how they can perceive that "publishing" can be
accomplished while doing the work for one's "personal use". By definition,
publishing indicates that materials are to be distributed widely - generally
for sale.

The National Archives/National Library have an online site to check Canadian soldiers who fought in the Boer War 1899-1902.  It appears that some of the attestation papers are viewable online as well.

Thanks for the link Carol. Looked on the Glenbow web site for some names of
Calgary area people who went to the Boer War. E. McNair was one of the names
with images on the web site.

Uncle Joe went from England to the Boer War and wrote his memoirs as part of
a family history booklet in 1967. He went to India for a few years and then
joined the family who had moved to Ontario in 1905. The miltary group lined
the funeral route in Hyde park when Queen Victoria died in January. Rene
helped me find Uncle Joe in the army camp west of London in the 1901
census. -- Elizabeth

In my burial plot mywife is buried in the right hand plot and I will be
buried in the left hand plot. I do not know if this is
traditionalBob McNarry. I let the firm who made the plaque make that
decision. I hope this helps.

The custom today for a double plot is not to bury side by side but to bury
one above the other. Fred

I know of one couple that are buried on the side that they slept in their
double bed. The man, who died last, said that as that had been good for so
many years why change it?

I have looked at pictures of headstones taken of various of my ancestors
and all have the husband on the left and the wife on the right (when you are
facing the headstone). These pictures were taken at three Edmonton
cemeteries and one rural one. In another instance at a rural cemetery, the
wife was on the left and husband on the right. At Edenbrooke here in
Calgary if you pre-order your marker, they put husband on the left and wife
on the right. Does this help?
