Microsoft Will End Support For Windows 98 January 16

to Windows 2000 or XP by now, there's still a sizable population using

I would like to attend your SIG but try to limit trips to Calgary as much as
I can, especially nights during the winter. If you ever supply helpful
websites or have hand-outs, I would be most appreciative of receiving them.
All my research is directed to England and Scotland. We'll be spending some
time together in Salt Lake....I am always on the lookout for helpful advice!

A question was asked at this mornings Computer Group meeting about
finding a web site for Ontario Townships names and location.

A page on Bill Martins website has a lot of links to Ontario information.
Go to:

http://my.tbaytel.net/bmartin/faves.htm

Browse down his page to:

"Detailed Map for Locating Townships" and click on it. It will take you
to:

http://www.westol.com/~beaurega/map.htm

This site has some large maps and a list of Counties with the Townships
for each County.

Happy hunting!

Excellent explanation of adware and Gator in particular and its
problems. From Fred Langa's newsletter.

1) Gator Information Center

Gator--- which has just renamed itself to "Claria"--- is a advertising
company that makes money primarily through banner ads and popups placed
inside small software gizmos it distributes for free, as a way to get
people to view its ads. Gator/Claria calls this "in-context behavioral
advertising," but the common name for their software products is
"adware." Gator/Claria was one of the very first companies in the adware
business. Today, they are one of the most successful--- perhaps *the*
most successful--- adware companies going.

On the plus side, adware (from any company--- not just Gator/Claria) can
be OK: You get "free" software, and the vendor makes some money off ads.
But there are negatives. For example, lots of adware makes use of "phone
home" components to update the embedded ads, and these components can be-
-- and sometimes have been--- used for snooping. That's why this kind of
software is also often called "spyware." Not all adware is spyware, and
not all phone-home components are used for snooping, but the potential
for misuse is there.

There can be other problems. The phone-home elements consume bandwidth
and may even trigger unwanted dial-outs on phone-based systems. They
also often run as nearly-constant background tasks, even if the ad-
supported software itself isn't active. Thus, the mere presence of
adware on your system can eat up a *lot* of CPU cycles and slow down
your system, even when the main adware application isn't running.

Worse, some adware vendors use less-than-forthright installation
processes. Sometimes, adware hides behind fake error messages designed
to trick unwary users into thinking they're responding to a system
message or a normal dialog box, when they're really accepting or
triggering the installation of an adware package.

Some adware vendors also set things up so their software tries to auto-
install when you merely visit a web page--- sometimes called a "drive-by
download." You don't have to click on anything; simply viewing the web
page will cause the adware to try to stuff itself into your system.

You may not like hyperagressive installation routines and downloads
triggered by subterfuge--- I sure don't--- but these behaviors are often
100% legal. In fact, adware usually comes with enormous, carefully
worded "click wrap" licenses that go into effect as soon as the software
downloads--- even if you trigger the download by accident or in error.

These licenses usually spell out very clearly that the adware vendor has
your permission to do whatever it is the adware package is designed for.
This often means that you're agreeing to allow the ads to display; and
agreeing to let the adware company monitor your actions. Exactly what
monitoring of which actions is usually spelled out in the rest of the
license terms and privacy statement.

Trouble is, many users aren't savvy enough to deflect these overly-
aggressive and sometimes even deceptive installation routines; through
uninformed choices or poor security practices, these users end up with
adware on their systems that they really didn't want and never
consciously chose.

And almost no one wades through the full license agreements, which
sometimes seem intentionally designed to bury the most important terms
under an avalanche of legal verbiage. But it *is* legal verbiage: You
may dislike the terms of the license, but if you download the software,
you have agreed to those terms.

That kind of unwanted, invasive software spawned a whole new class of
defensive products designed to protect your PC. In fact, "Ad-Aware" (
http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2003/2003-11-10.htm#1 ) started out as
a simple tool to alert you to the presence of unwanted adware on your
system. Now, of course, it and its competitors such as Spybot Search and
Destroy ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ ) and Pest Patrol (
http://www.pestpatrol.com ) help guard against a whole range of threats.
But they all lump adware in with overtly malicious software; they treat
virtually all adware as inherently suspicious, to be checked out and
possibly removed, ASAP.

Of course, not all adware is bad. As long as you know what you're
getting, and as long as you consciously and overtly choose to download
and install the software, and are OK with all the terms of its user
agreement and with the tradeoffs involved in using the software, it's
fine--- it's a valid choice you can make.

To that end, the folks at PC Pitstop just opened a "Gator Information
Center" ( http://www.pcpitstop.com/gator/ ) to help users understand the
pros and cons using Gator/Claria software, which is perhaps the most
widely distributed adware in the world.

It's worth mentioning that Gator is not happy with PC Pitstop---
Gator/Claria brought suit against PC Pitstop in September. (You can get
details on the PitStop site.)

The PitStop information is definitely worth a look. For example, they've
waded through the 20 pages and 6,000 words aggregated into the "Gator
Advertising Information Network" software license to find some eye-
opening items you're probably not aware of. They've pulled out some of
the more interesting items into a little quiz you can take on
http://www.pcpitstop.com/gator/Quiz.asp . For example, the quiz
indicates that that the Gator license forbids you to use tools like Ad-
Aware, Spybot, or PestPatrol to remove Gator/Claria software!

(You can read the license yourself at
http://www.gainpublishing.com/help/app_privacy/app_ps_v51.html and on
related pages. The license also clearly states that you're agreeing to
let Gator/Claria collect certain data about you, including your first
name, country, city, and five digit ZIP code, what software is on your
personal computer, your software usage characteristics and preferences,
information on some of the Web pages you view, and the amount of time
spent at some Web sites; as well as other information....)

If you're using, or considering using, any Gator/Claria software (such
as eWallet, DateManager, WeatherScope, or PrecisionTime), you ought to
take a look at the PC Pitstop pages. In fact, although the PitStop pages
are specific to Gator/Claria, they're worth reading for the general
knowledge there as well.

Not all adware is bad. But you need to know the full scoop--- the
downsides as well as the positives--- before you can make an informed
decision, and the PC PitStop pages will help you do just that.

According to an article today on the Globe and Mail technology page,
Microsoft have announced an extension to their support of Windows 98.
The headline reads: "Microsoft extends Windows 98 support to 2006".
The article can be found at (2 line URL?):

http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040112.gtwin980112/BN
Story/Technology/

"Full details about the extended support period for these products will
be available at http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle as of January 15,

I guess there's no need now for us to rush for last minute support.

Good day,

I am Paul Nkuna, Decillion Financial Services South Africa. This is an urgent
and confidential business proposition.

On June 14, 2000, a foreign consultant with Global Oil Corporation, Mr. Alan
Baker made a numbered time (Fixed) deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at
US$8,320,000.00, with us. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his
forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, a reminder was sent and
finally it was discovered from his contract employers, Global Oil Corporation
that Mr. Baker passed away.

On further investigation, I discovered that he had no heir and he died without
making a will or a testament. I also discovered that Mr. Baker did not declare
any relative in any of his official documents, including his deposit paperwork
in my possession and all attempts to trace any relative was fruitless. This
investment has been fixed under our management. No one will ever come forward to
claim it. Under South African law, the money reverts to the Government if nobody
applies for claim over a period of 5 (five) years.

Consequently, my desire is to transfer this funds with the help of a reliable
foreiger, to a foreign bank account. I am writing to you because I cannot
operate a foreign account. Hence, I am seeking for an individual who can help me
safeguard and invest this money. I want to present you as the beneficiary to
this investment so that you claim this money on my behalf with the help of my
attorney. I am willing to pay something as remuneration for your assistance.

Please provide me with your full names, address, telephone and fax number so
that my attorney process the necessary documents in this regards that puts you
as the beneficiary to this investment. Please observe utmost confidentiality,
and be rest assured that this transaction will be of mutual benefit. If you are
interested, reply me by email ASAP.

Kind regards,

Paul Nkuna.

From time to time, AFHSers have been frustrated that they get multiple
copies of a message on the distgen or other sources. I don't recall a
reason being given for this - other than for the individual to accept that
it was a "hiccup" in "the system".

Below, Tourbus newsletter makes an explanation that surely makes sense to
me. Thought others would be interested as well.

TOURBUS EXTRA - 17 Jan 04 - Extra, Extra!

Oh the irony... In my last TOURBUS article, I said this:

"Do you have a problem with your computer that just irks you every
   time you turn it on?"

And wouldn't you know it, a BUNCH of people wrote to me saying "YES!
I got FOUR copies of this issue -- please make it stop!!" Well of
course your striving busdriver only sent ONE copy, so I went looking
for an explanation.

After poking around a bit, I found that MOST of the people afflicted
with "Extra Tourbus Syndrome" are EARTHLINK customers. But since we
have 100,000 readers from thousands of Internet sites, and only ones
experiencing this problem are from Earthlink (and 1 or 2 other sites)
I have concluded (with the help of some Very Smart People) that the
problem is on the receiving end.

[GEEK TALK LEVEL=MILD]
When Internet mail is sent, the sending system spews a stream of data
to the receiving mail server, then waits for a signal to indicate that
it was successfully received. In some cases, the message DOES arrive,
but the receiving system is too busy to send the OK-GOT-IT signal before
the sender gets tired of waiting for it. So the sending system
dutifully begins the transmission again. And again...
[/GEEK TALK]

Email servers are SO over-burdened with a crushing load of spam that
sometimes things get a little bogged down. That appears to be what is
happening here. So you have three options:

1) Delete the extra copies and hope the problem magically goes away.
2) Contact your ISP's help desk and report the problem.
3) Print the extra copies and wallpaper the bathroom. (If you do
    that, I want photos!)

Thanks for your patience, and please take this opportunity to visit
the TOURBUS website and see all of these exciting things:

Hi Judii:

Many thanks for sending us this logical reason why we sometimes get
duplicate messages.

> "Do you have a problem with your computer that just irks you every
> time you turn it on?"

Yes I do. For some time now when I open an e-mail in Netscape 4.78 (yes
I am still using that for e-mails although I have more or less converted
to Internet Explorer when "surfing") the message appears in "minimize"
format and I have to "maximize" it. At some point I must have clicked on
"something" that changed the way I receive e-mails. Do you, or any other
Netscape user, know how I can reverse the procedure?

I hope your shoulder is much better now.

Rene

The message made me think of something I've wanted  to pass on. I downloaded the Firebird browser and have been using it for about a month. I highly recommend it. It is quick and has nice features. It is based on Netscape code, so I like the feel. Here is a link to the site for the  download.

I believe what you'll need to do is be sure that you have such a message
open, resize and locate it on the screen where you prefer to see it, and
then close the software. It should "remember" that as the default the next
time.

Ugh. Am going back to work tomorrow, but am still on painkillers and am not
yet driving. I hate this kind of a struggle!

Cheers to all.

Thanks for your advice Judii. Caroly Lylyk gave me similar advice and I
am pleased to say that my problem has been solved.

I am sorry that you are still having pain in your shoulder. It has been
a long time and I can imagine you are pretty fed up with the whole
thing. Hopefully you will get better soon.

Do you have a problem with defragging your hard drive? For me the
problem is that my virus scan keeps interrupting it and restarting defrag.
After 10 restarts, defrag asks if I want to continue. To try and avoid
this, I will go in, turn off my virus scan and firewall, restart the
computer, run the defrag, turn on the virus scan and firewall and then
restart. I have found a way that seems to get past all of this.
The method I have found will keep restarting because of the virus
scan, but it won't matter because it won't stop after 10
restarts. Basically I run it in a DOS window with a couple of parameters.
If you know how to open a DOS window, you know the most complicated part of
this. You run this when you won't need your computer for an hour or so. It
will keep restarting but it won't stop after 10 restarts.
     The short version is
		 1. Open a DOS window.
		 2. Type " defrag c: /F /Noprompt", press enter, where "c:" is the hard
drive you want to defrag.
		 3. Leave your computer for an hour or overnight. When it is done, it will
close automatically.

I have a Windows '98 machine, so this may not work for others. It seems
to have worked well for me. I did a regular defrag after just to check and
it ran quickly.
