Hi all,

Maintenance Update

02 MAY 2011

1. Disappearing buttons fixed.

2. The waterfall may be activated during TX.
The soundcard must be full duplex to view.

3. Repeater mode:
If several EasyPal repeaters are accessable at the same
time, then there may be confusion when all respond together
to a command.
A specific repeater may now be selected and only that
repeater will respond to a users command. BSR's are an
exception when all repeaters will respond.

I think the reason you are not able to do a quick change of

I was wondering if anyone is using the MFJ-998 tuner. If you are, what does your
wattmeter show as your power FWD when you transmit. I have the FT-2000 and was
wondering just what it displays. The PO on the FT-2000 shows 50 Watts but the
tuner only shows a few watts.

I bet both are right. FT probably reads something close to instantaneous
peak power. MFJ probably reads something closer to average power. Digital
SSTV uses modulation technology that has a high crest factor.

Just a thought, I dont have the knowledge in programming. But as I remember the
troughput of data in bits per second is based on the bandwith available, which
means that we are limited to max. 3KHz on HF. Would it be possible to change the
coding so one could use 12,5/25KHz on VHF/UHF which could improve the speed up
to ten times as fast (or Higher Resolution in same time). Would be nice to
change the settings in EasyPal between HF/VHF/UHF :-)

The VHF RF bandwidth is not really an issue. Digital and analog modes
such as SSTV, Packet and DSSTV use AF tones, so your limiting factor is
the audio bandwidth rather than the RF. Most AF systems in rigs are
limited to less than 3Khz bandwidth.

Which is why you have to directly connect to the modulator and
demodulator circuits rather than use the mic input/AF output if you run
high speed packet. If you wanted to run a greater bandwidth for Dsstv on
VHF you would have to do much the same sort of thing.

Also the system is much more complex than that, the throughput is very
dependant on the modulation used.

In a basic system, then yes there is a 1:1 relationship between bandwidth
however as you use more complex modulation systems, then the effective
data rate increases.

As a very crude example:

If you use a simple tone to represent a bit, then you get a 1:1 data
rate. Now change the modulation so that you send the tone at different
amplitudes say 4 different levels. now you can sen two binary bits with
the same single tone, 00,01,10,&11 so you have 4 x the throughput with
no increase in bandwidth.

Much more complex modulation systems exist, mainly developed for the
dial-up modem systems, where multiple levels, and also multiple phases
are used to represent larger and larger bit patterns. Dsstv especially on
HF has additional challenges such as error recovery, and here the
encoding system plays a role, where some of the transmitted data is used
to detect and recover from errors.

I've never used this software on VHF, as I'm not very active really, but
in the past I have used other dsstv type software (I can't remember what
the name was, it was a long time ago) but it did allow the type of
modulation to be changed increasing the number of levels/phases , and thus
the speed could be increased. Obviously with the much cleaner link
provided by VHF FM the quite a large increase could be gained, this was
also helped by the far lower error rate as well.

That cannot be extended infinitely. The real deciding factor is the
Shannon channel capacity theorem. For a given amount of noise and
a given channel bandwidth you can get no more than a mathematically
determined bit rate. I'd suggest first visiting Wikipoodle. Then if
still interested dig into more serious communications theory
literature, investigate M-ary encoding, investigate different noise
models (Shannon is White Gaussian Noise based), and investigate path
modeling (multipath affects HF bit rates, too.)

Hi all,

This is not a Update, Its a Beta version

Latest Beta 14b June 2011

This is a test version only, with comments for you to report.

Things to check:

As a result of several requests, and a successful test, this version
reverses the direction of the waterfall display.

This makes Waterfall text and Waterfall pictures scroll so that the top
of the text or picture is viewed first, as the brain would expect.

A user with previous versions will see waterfall text and pictures
upside down. The two systems are not compatible.

Because of the advantages it has been decided that all future versions
will use the reversed waterfall only.

Hi all,

Latest Beta 16b June 2011

THIS IS NOT A RELEASE VERSION

This is a test version only, with comments for you to report.

Things to check:

Further requests:
From "waterfall options" normal or reverse waterfall scrolling
may be slected.

Reverse Waterfall text and reverse Waterfall pictures scroll so that
the top of the text or picture is viewed first,
as the brain would expect.
This option may cause confusion. To work correctly:

1. Users must both use the same, normal or reverse.
Otherwise text and pics will be upside down.

2. If in normal mode, saving a wav file will have a '-n.wav" suffix.
The "-n" indicates the wave file is for normal scrolling.
If sending to a normal scrolling user, send with the "-n.wav" suffix.
If sending to a reverse user, send with the ".wav" suffix.

Hi all,

THIS IS NOT A RELEASE VERSION

This is a test version only, with comments for you to report.

Things to check:

LAST ONE BEFORE DECISION!

1. USE REVERSE ONLY.
2. USE AS IN OLD VERSIONS ONLY.
3. LEAVE AS IS WITH BOTH OPTIONS.

From "waterfall options" normal or reverse waterfall scrolling
may be slected or the "R/N" button may be used.

A smal button ("R/N") is to the left and above the "ABORT" button.
Clicking this button quickly toggles between reverse and normal.

Reverse Waterfall text and reverse Waterfall pictures scroll so that
the top of the text or picture is viewed first,
as the brain would expect. Like the cinema.

1. Users must both use the same, normal or reverse.
Otherwise text and pics will be upside down.

2. Reverse and normal scrolling files are held in separate directories.
Files saved in either mode go to their own directory.
Clicking the "WAV" button will bring up the appropriate wave files.

Hi all,

Latest Release 24 JUN 2011

Waterfall direction option has been added.
Waterfall from bottom to top is much better for waterfall
text and pictures. It scrolls as in the Cinema.

1. Either may be toggled by clicking the small "R/N" button
near the "ABORT" button or from the "Waterfall Options".

2. Two EasyPal directories hold the appropriate waterfall
    wave files.
"\UserWaveFiles" contains the reverse waterfall files.
"\UserWaveFiles-N" contains the original waterfall files.
If necessary move your present files to the appropriate
folder as a once only action.
When making the waterfall text or picture wave files,
these files are auto saved to the appropriate directory.

The "Station Log" has been enhanced.
When this is selected and the mouse is hovered over same,
the width of the box will fill the screen and vice versa.
This allows more info to be typed directly into the expanded
box. This is saved for future use. When a new station appears
on the "callsign" box, it is highlighted in the "Station Log"
box and the info can be seen without having to manually
select.

If "EZCalls" has been defined by right clicking the "Callsign"
box, then double clicking the "callsign" will automatically
send the callsign to "EZCalls" and the result displayed.

Enhancements have been made to the "Send Forms" and decoding.

LAST ONE BEFORE DECISION!

1. USE REVERSE ONLY.
2. USE AS IN OLD VERSIONS ONLY.
3. LEAVE AS IS WITH BOTH OPTIONS.

I'd say No. 3 and let people agree between themselves which way, or let them sort it out post receiving in a photo editing program, I guess?

Interesting.  I tried the regular download to save but the download never
occurred.  So, I followed instructions and pasted the link to browser:

I attempted the download only to find that, for the very first time in the
history of my downloading EasyPal, I was warned the software may
be harmful.  Yeh, I know, people have gone through this before but
I'm astonished that it's happening to me after all this long time.

Just passing the info along.  I haven't uninstalled the current version
so that I CAN download the new one yet.  Will do that this afternoon
most likely.

Yessir, me too.  That's why I was surprised, trouble free and
not on anyone's target list as a trouble spot for EasyPal.
