Hello

I'm completely new to digital SSTV, and am in need of some advice.

The local digital group uses hampal on 2m. I have an ft-8900R and a
computer running XP. The computer has both USB and a soundcard that I
dont use for anything else.

So, what I need is some advice about interfacing these two components
so that digital (hampal) on 2m will work for me.

I'm open to any and all suggestions, both "build-my-own" and off the
shelf buy.

Thanks

Hi Tim,

Very easy to roll your own. All you need is 2 small
Isolation transformers and an Opto Isolator and some cable
and plugs. Do a Google search for "SSTV INTERFACE" and you
will find plenty of circuits.
There are many ready made units out there but they cost an
arm and a bit whereas you can make your own for about $10.
There are pinout details so you can interface direct to the
Data Port on the rear of the radio so that you do not have
to use the Microphone plug to get your sigs in to the radio.

Cheers,

Have you checked with the local hams to see what interface they use?
That would probably be the easiest method. Barring that, I would think
any interface that works for WSJT would work (the one I use for WSJT
works fine for me with EasyPal). Try a Google search on WSJT interface
and that should get you started.

Hi Randy?
try this,,, uninstall easypal,, Run a registry cleaner (  http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html )
this is a free one,, works pretty good.  then reinstall 21Dec07 easypal.. Think that will fix..

E MACHINES W3115 DESKTOP RUNS XP. I CAN SEND AND RECIEVE PICTURES BUT
NONE OF THE WATERFALL OPS, LIKE TUNE, WATERFALL TEXT, WATERFALL PIC,
WILL WORK. MY VERSION OF XP HAS S.P. 2 INSTALLED. A WHILE AGO THERE WAS
INFO ON KC1CS WEBSITE ABOUT A PROBLEM WITH AN MVSVCR 80 FILE AND HOW TO
GET IT INSTALLED ON XP BUT THAT INFO SEEMS TO BE GONE. I LOOKED AT MY
SOFTWARE FILES AND I THINK IT IS MISSING ON MY MACHINE. HOW DO I GET
IT? ANYBODY KNOW? I HAVE UNINSTALLED ALL INSTANCES OF EASYPAL AND
REINSTALLED A FRESH ONE BUT NO CHANGE. ALSO HAVE A LAPTOP THAT RUNS XP
AND HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH IT.

Hi,

I too am having the same problems with Waterfall ops DEC 21st version. Keeps saying can't find *.wav file. It appears the files will not save when created as the wav folder is empty. Everything else works OK.
I uninstalled and went back to a previous version and all works as it should.
I am running Vista Ultimate.

Hello Guenter,

There is no msg when you save the .wav, only when you go to
tune or to send a waterfall pic or txt nothing happens for
20 seconds and then a pop-up saying ...
Unable to open file *.wav Try again

There is no file created at all in the user wav folder even
though you save it when created. Infact there are NO files
at all in the folder. It is empty

As I said in my previous post, I uninstalled and went back
to the 19th November version and all is ok!

Thanks Scott.

yes I have talked to the local guys and they use a variety of
interfaces, but none use the ft-8900. So, I thought I'd ask around a
bit further before I commit to anything.

It seems that just a couple of impedance matching transformers works
as well as any expensive gear for high signal areas, which I am in.

So, looks like a job for the soldering iron!

As far as I know, most people just use audio transformers with a 1:1
turns ratio such as a 600 ohm:600 ohm transformer like commonly used in
computer modems, etc. The big thing seems to be to keep the radio
ground separate from the PC ground to avoid ground loops (hum).
Optoisolators work great for the PTT line.

I HAD DOWNLOADED MANY VERSIONS OF EASY PAL AND NEVER UNINSTALLED AND
CLEANED ANY RESIDUAL FILES FROM COMPUTER. AFTER THE FIST UNINSTALL AND
RUNNING WINDOWS CARE EASY PAL WORKED UNTILL I SHUT IT DOWN. UPON
STARTING EASY PAL IT WAS NO WATERFALL OPS AGAIN. BUT I JUST KEPT
UNINSTALLING EASY PAL AND HUNTING THROUGH DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS,
PROGRAM FILES,ETC, AND DELETING ANYTHING OF EASY PAL AND THEN RUN
WINDOWS CARE REG. CLEANER AND RE DOWN LOADED (FROM AAR3BM.NET) AND
REINSTALLED EASY PAL AND FINALLY GOT AN ACTUAL FRESH DOWN LOAD THAT
DIDN'T KNOW MY CALL. IT SEEMS TO BE A CLUE THAT AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD A
NEW VERSION AND START IT UP, IF SETUP ALREADY KNOWS YOUR CALL, YOU ARE
ACTUALLY STILL RUNNING THE OLD VERSION, AND SOMETHING IS AMISS.

ANYWAY KD8EKX IS VERY HAPPY WITH THE NEW WORLD OF WATERFALL FEATURES.

Hi All,
Seems that when I run EasyPal with the Signalink USB it reboots my computer on occasion. I have tried several fixes and cannot stop it. It is apparently the combination that creates the problem because if I am running DigiPan for instance there is no problem. And EasyPal runs fine with other interfaces.

I wonder if others have had such a problem? If so what did you do to fix it.

I am using a SignaLink/USB with my TS-480SAT running about
25W on PSK31 and about 40W-50W on EasyPal with no problems.
I really enjoy the solid SignaLink/USB, I never have to

Yes, I am using ferrite chokes on all lines. I had so much
trouble with my Software Defined Radio and RFI that I have

Everybody loves their Signalink Ken, that's why I bought it. And it works great here with my FT-857, but something is re-booting my computer. I can't figure out if it is the software or the Signalink, I suspect the combination is the fault.

I am only listening at this point so it cannot be a RF problem.

I really enjoy the solid SignaLink/USB, I never have to

Stan,

You’ve may have already tried this but suggest you boot your computer in the safe mode.  This will allow you to step through the various programs you’re running.  You can then load each program individually instead of in batch.  This may lead you to the program which is causing the reboot condition.  Did the problem start when you installed Signalink drivers?

Just a thought.

Hi Garrett,

The computer does not reboot in either of the situations you mention. ONLY when I am running EasyPal with the Signalink running. I tried running DigiPan with the Signalink and it worked fine. This is only in the RX mode. I left Digipan running for about 18 hours and it did not reboot. DigiPan of course is PSK.

Right now I am trying EasyPal and the Signalink with much less signal level going into the Signalink from the radio. Will see what that brings.

Thanks

Stan

No problems with all the programs you mentioned, I run all of them. easypal is
specifically targeted to Vista, that is to say the programming and the compiller
are run on a Vista machine as I under stand it.
The sound setup for all those programs is not an issue either if you take into
account learning how Vista uses sound and the sound drivers. First of all go to
Control panel and configure your sound under the Sound menue. You'll figure it
out.

Hi All,
Seems that when I run EasyPal with the Signalink USB it reboots my computer
on occasion. I have tried several fixes and cannot stop it. It is apparently
the combination that creates the problem because if I am running DigiPan for
instance there is no problem. And EasyPal runs fine with other interfaces.

I wonder if others have had such a problem? If so what did you do to fix it.
