Welcome to the new members !

Erik is back from his trip and has updated the DIGSSTV program.
The update is dated 15DEC02 and includes two files that should be
placed in the DIGSSTV working directory.  Allow these files to
overwrite the files already there with the same file name.

I received this message from Erik:

=========================
Hi Dave,
I am just back again.
I have made a few adjustments which hopefully
will cure the PTT and TX progress bar.
There is a problem with closing some of the sound
file routines (winoldap).
I have again made a few adjustments but as there
is no prob here I will have to get feedback on
this. If it works I will include it in the next
update.
When the program is stable then I can add some
bells and whistles such as allow any file to
send and RX etc.
I am also trying to make the HDSSTV routines as
a thread of the main proceedures. If successful,
it will mean that several instances of TX, RX,
make wav file and decoding can all run at the same
time without crashing. It is new ground for me and
will take a little while. Maybe it is impossible but
is worth a try.
OK CUL de Erik.
=========================

With version 15DEC02 on my 400 MHz computer running Windows ME,
I could only get the Tuning Tones to send one time.  The update, 15DEC02,
now allows me to send the Tuning Tones as many times as I want.

Many of the problems reported seem to be related to computer speed and
Windows version.  Please mention these if you wish to report any problems.

Read the details under the About/About section of the Digi-SSTV

We had a very successful net on 40 meters today.
It looks like it didn't take long for people to get use to this mode

This is interesting.
Looks like lots of HAMS were waiting for an excuse to go out and buy
a new computer. DIGISSTV seems to have created the excuse.
So far tonight I have worked 4 HAMS.  All 4 of them have just gotton
New Computers yesterday and today.
I've had My 2.0 GHZ machine now for over a year. Maybe Eric has
stock in Intel :-)

It's nice using the 2GHZ box.  It doesn't take much longer sending a
mediam quality DIGISSTV image and decoding it then it takes reciving
a Martin 1 in real time.

I've worked Digisstv on every HF band now and 2 meters with the
exceptions of 160, and 75.

I've worked both 2 meter and 10 meter FM along with 10 meter and 2
meter Sideband.

We don't seem to have any problems with the mode but I suspect that like any mode if you overdrive something it will create junk where it isnt supposed to. We have been operating on 7228 and 14.233 with some  complaints and  the only complaints there are are from the SSTV'ers being interfered with by other ssb stations. Nothing out of the ordinary.
My ssb rig seems to limit the bandwidth fairly well and I have about 98 percent success with the DIGSSTV mode. Some of the failures seem to come from the "UFO" or someone sweeping the freq.

I agree that one of the first issues to be resolved is operating frequencies. I have yet to transmit or receive a DSSTV signal so I don't have anything substantial to analyze but I did look at what I could find on the technical specifications. The mode uses 8 tones with 9 phase angle modulations at a baseband (baud) frequency of 114Hz. Given the nominal tone spacing and the modulation spreading at 2x baseband frequency, the signal will be at least 2KHz wide assuming linear amplification. With such a wide signal, there will be a significant opportunity for interference in the subbands used by the narrow modes like PSK31, MFSK16, Throb, etc. Even MT63 is only half that BW and it is something of a pariah on the digital bands. Given that this mode is truly digital and not tone analog like SSTV, I think operating generally in the phone bands may not be a good idea, at least from a public relations point of view. I am not certain how the regulatory agencies will view it either. However, Ten-Tec and Thales conducted a 3KHz BW digital voice contact on 21.218MHz and there seemed to be no regulatory issues. I would suggest that during this introductory phase of operating DSSTV, that everyone operate in the "wider" ham bands where interference will be less likely. I suggest that everyone work the mode on 80, 15 and 10 meters near the SSTV frequencies. Even though this is in the phone band, image transmission is allowed on these frequencies.

OK see you there at 2100Z

I've been using this program for years.
It's pretty nice.
I guess as long as the 1st couple of bytes of the jpg's header gets
though. It will display the rest of the file with the missing data.

I received a picture from Bill, WA2SOH. He had a blip in his
signal.
I then tried to read the file with PSP, PHOTOSHOP and ACDC. They
would not load the image.
I then tried it with this program and the picture came up.
It showed 3/4 of the image and rest was grey.

I thought I read someplace that their is a JPEG/JFIF recovery
program.
I think it may had been for the MAC only. I'll have to check on
this and see if there is something like this for windows.

Also, I wish the license fee was not so high for the use of the
JPEG2000 wavelets. I think this would be a better way to convert
the images for transfer via DIGISSTV.

While the program is decoding and you should receive an error
message "Sorry to many errors...."

Go into the DIGISSTV working directory.
Look for a file name temp.jpg.

If the file is there but will be damaged.
You may be able to read it.
I find this to work the best.  It seems to read almost and diaply
almost any damaged image file

This program reads and displays files that Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop
and even ACDC seem to have problems reading.

Hi Dave,

It would be cool if a software developer familiar with the DIRECT

This way I think things like encodeing and decoding could be speeded

We also were able to transfer other files using the DOS software.
Last night we started testing the viability of this mode to pass

It would be great if a file transfer feature could be added to the

suggest that during this introductory phase of operating DSSTV, that
everyone operate in the "wider" ham bands where interference will be
less likely. I suggest that everyone work the mode on 80, 15 and 10
meters near the SSTV frequencies. Even though this is in the phone
band, image transmission is allowed on these frequencies.

Thanks to all those that have spread the word about DIGSSTV
and this e-mail reflector. I am very impressed by the phenomenal
interest in DIGSSTV. In the first 24 hours of the existance of this
group there have been 34 members to join !

Some of the subjects that need to be discussed include frequencies
that should be used for DIGSSTV and operational issues.

The potential of this type of digital transmission goes far beyond the
exchange of pictures. Using the DOS Prompt version of HDSSTV,
I have been able to encode a small HTML file that I have successfully
transmitted over HF to users of DIGSSTV. The transmission time
was only 17 seconds and it provided all my contact information plus
a hot link to my web page.

Use your imagination and share your ideas of what you find that can be
done in this mode.

Hi Dave,

Was surprised to see the three HD pictures I transmitted this morning on your
web site:

Really pleased you started the digsstv group. This new mode really exciting.

Hi,
I am glad to be a part of this new group. The new mode looks most
promising and will only get better as time and input permits.
I have been using the mode for a week and got it working as good as it
gets on my Win 98 Dell optiplex 450mhz. There is definitely a 1 gig or
better cpu going to be purchased for the shack.
73's all
