Help!

Wanted to explorer the potential of the newer MFSK mode and did as suggested
by Ron KA2HZO in a recent posting which is:

>Ron (KA2HZO) recently wrote:

>I then changed my display to 1024 x 768. (This is a problem.) I got 3
people working that had this problem.. All they had to do is change their
display to 1024 x 768.

Running WIN98 second edition with all files up to date, the cygwin1.dll is
located in the MFSK directory as well as in the windows system folder and
the system32 folder.

The MSCOMM32.ocx is the correct version as well as the mfsk_rx and _tx and
MFSKTEST.exe files.

I execute the MFSKTEST.exe and I am able to resize the display titled as
"MFSK-AID", call up the com window and enter the com port, enter data into
the "T" (which I believe this to be the "TONES") as "16" and the BW which (I
believe is the Bandwidth) as 1000 and I leave alone the "M" input. If I
then select the "RX" button I am getting a run time error #5 display and
have to start over. There appears to be another link that I have missed or
do not understand.

One comment is that the defaults for the MFSKTEST do not come up as
described on the WEB site but are initially blank.

When I try executing either the receive or transmit .exe files I get the
following error "the link to missing export cygwin1.dll_getreent"

I have the feeling that that this old WIN98 system will not support the
newer files, comments appreciated.

PS - Ron, heard you I believe on this new mode up on 14.109.50 after which I
think you switched back to MT63.

Happy New Year to ALL

Ron,

Happy New Year and I think that you may have the new program work without
too much work. First, leave the MFSKTest blank …dont write anything in…this
is the default that will work.

Second, if you want it to work, you will have to work it with the <vox>
usually.

While working, you have to push the TX or RX button.

Try it to day. I have to leave. But if you have a problem, I will send
you a complete file that will help you. Then you will have to send me your
email address.

Hello Gill,

Nice hearing from you again and thanks for the help.

I just reopened the MFSKTEST file and for the first time it came up with the
default settings in it, a change for which I can not say why?, however when
I click on the Send button I get a run time error #5

I think this may be due to the way Windows interprets the cygwin.dll file.
Not sure, any thoughts

I have been able to copy other stations transmitting on the new
MFSKtest protocol using the default values. The first station I was
able to copy was VE2FT. However, when I tried to call him back a
couple of nights ago I had a malfunction in an electrical circuit at
that moment and lost all power to my equipment. So after getting
things back up after troublshooting it was getting pretty late and
gave it up.

Last night I was also able to copy other stations and was trying to
switch over to the other protocol but after they switched over I could
not see any more print and probably did not have the right parameters
set.

The frequency that I was tuning was 3582 dial frequency USB. Is this
the frequency? Even though I could not copy the station after it
switched over, I looked at the waterfall using a program such as
Hamscope, the width of the signal was clearly evident at 100 Hz wide
when they switched over. It was actually showing up as the low tones
at 3581.5 if I was reading the screen correctly.

When the stations continued on they switched to MFSK16 and there were
so many that I decided not to enter the roundtable. I can copy
everyone pretty well except for the HB9. I am mostly using a low open
wire fed dipole at 30 feet optimized for conjugate matching at 80 and
160 so it is not a long range antenna.

The MFSK16 signal was almost centered on 3582. What dial freq were you
folks using?

Finally, one other thing that I discovered is that if I use the
MFSKtest program, and then try to switch over to another digital
program using MFSK16 (Stream or Hamscope) these programs will act
normally but they will not print correct symbols so the print is not
readible.

Once I closed out everything, it seemed to work OK at least in one
case. One time I even rebooted the computer but that may not have been
necessary.

Any others experience similar issues?

Also, anyone want to try for a sked using the default MFSKtest tones
and sked?

How about we come up with some temporary freqs to try out? I can be on
most any band 160 through 17 meters. Could we list one dial freq for
each band all using USB? Perhaps 1838, 3582, 7072, 10132, 14072, 18102?

I have completed the CD, which features gMFSK 0.6, runs as a
remastered KNOPPIX distro in RAM, and data can be saved on a
Windows system hard disk if desired. It is aimed at the
complete newbie to Linux (like myself!), or even to computers,
so it is very simple. The idea was to be able to turn a
retired computer, like the IBM 300PL's on eBay for $50 that
have no OS, into a chear ham communications center. There are
no additional ham programs other than XLog and Hamlib files.
It works just fine on the air on PSK31, PSK63, and MFSK16
which I have used with it.

I have no way to host the ISO, but will be glad to burn a copy
for someone upon receipt of a blank CD-R and stamped return
mailer. Distribution was intended to be by snailmail because
the assumption is that the computer newbie may not even yet
have a computer, and probably not a CD burner or know how to
use one.

If you already have a Windows computer, I recommend using
DigiPan 2.0 instead of gMFSK, because of the new multichannel
decoding feature. I have been unable to locate Tomi Mannihen,
the author, to get him to add multichannel decoding to gMFSK.
Don't be scared of DigiPan. It is said to be the easiest PSK31
program to learn to use.

Hi Skip,
Yes have DigiPan 2.0 on my Windows XP system. Works great!
I am retired and have no wheels to go anywhere so have been playing
with Linux distros lately for something to do. Have two HDD's and on
the second HDD have two different Linux distros, Mandrake 10.1 and
MEPIS 2005 beta 3 www.mepis.org which is also a live Linux OS using
the CD like Knoppix and is also based on the Debian distro. MEPIS can
be installed like Knoppix permanently on the HDD. Find MEPIS a little
more "user friendly" than Knoppix. Will send a blank CD and mailer to
you and give your live CD a try.

I had my first two way with the mode this morning at around 1555Z with
Andy, VE9DX from NB. I also heard HB9AVK but was not able to work him.

Here is the most interesting thing I found. While monitoring a weak
MFSKtest signal at or very close to the noise level, a moderately
strong MT63 station came up on the same frequency (14106.5 USB) and
when viewed on the waterfall from Hamscope it appeared to be
overlappping on the same 1 KHz BW.

But the MFSKtest program still printed perfectly as if the MT63
program was not even there. That says a lot to me about the robustness
of MFSKtest. I would guess that the MT63 folks were able to have their
conversation as well.

Two frequencies of interest are 7072.2 and 3582.2 and I plan to
monitor these frequencies.

Yes Ron,

It's USB and remember Zero Beat Freq. (Freq shown on your dial)

Best thing to do is get a program like MIXW or Hamscope to line up on the
signals in the waterfall.

I use mixw and set mixw to MT63 MODE. This way I line up the MFSKp signal right
under the MT63 line.

You can find m and others on 14109.5 then we move to 14101.5 to not cause
problems with the MT63 guys.
But moving seems to be hard for people with out band scopes

VE9DX from NB. I also heard HB9AVK but was not able to work him.

Here is the most interesting thing I found. While monitoring a weak MFSKtest
signal at or very close to the noise level, a moderately strong MT63 station
came up on the same frequency (14106.5 USB) and when viewed on the waterfall
from Hamscope it appeared to be overlappping on the same 1 KHz BW.

But the MFSKtest program still printed perfectly as if the MT63 program was
not even there. That says a lot to me about the robustness of MFSKtest. I
would guess that the MT63 folks were able to have their conversation as
   well.

Two frequencies of interest are 7072.2 and 3582.2 and I plan to monitor
   these frequencies.

   73,

   Rick, KV9U

Jerry, you do not have to write 32 or 1000. Everything is in default…so do
not write anything unless you want to try new tones and bandwith!!!

I have been calling also on 14101 and 14109.5 few minuts ago and heard
nobody. Gilles ve2ft

Sorry guys.
I can't stick around. Wish I could.

Just some quick comments.

But after playing with this mode for a week.
I find it's very good for weak signal work on HF.

What we need now is a better interface such as.
Nino Porcino's MT63 GUI.
http://www.geocities.com/iz8bly/MT63/index.htm

They also need to add backspace error correction. Some form of TXT and Small
Binary file transfer.
Yes Binary File transfer.
I say this becuase we have been transfering ".eml" (These are email files) with
MT63's binary file transfer mode and they work out quite well.
The eml files are binary and when received by the station will open up Outlook
express and you can just click on forward to other people.
This would be a cool feature.

More comments later. Have to go.

Look down at the task bar. See if an icon shows up there.
It's not going behind any other window is it?

Nope, nothing on taskbar, nothing else on the screen but the "bar", no

Jerry,

You might be missing or have an older version of cygwin1.dll. Start up
MFSK_RX.exe and see if you get any error messages.
