Hello Kim,

Try sending ?APRSD to JACKTN which is our local digi_ned digi. If you
get a reply let me know.

I am local to our digi_ned digi so I have never tried to get a reply
from a remote area.

Thanks

I'm trying to get a small igate configuration running on a WRT54G.
I have the "embedded" digi_ned 0.3.5, and an AX.25 kernel
(White Russian 0.9 w/X-wrt). I'm slowly learning how to configure ax.25
under linux.

My struggle tonight is how to tell digi_ned which AX.25 port to use!
The help file (digi_ned -h) says

--

digi_ned [-h] | -p <port> [-v] [<digi_ned.ini>]

To use this digipeater you must specify the port using the '-p'option.
This option takes a string that defindes the port in thefollowing
form:

-p <tty-device>:<baudrate>:<nr-of-ports>

The KISS device needs to have at least one port, more ports follow the
MKISS standaard. There can be only one tty-device with this version.

--

OK, fine. I have no idea what the MKISS standard is, and google
doesn't help me discover it... but when I run 'listen -a', I see
no output, even though digi_ned -v shows me that it's sending
beacons.

Help?

Thanks...

I can't get into specifics, because it's been several years. But when I did
this, I followed the instructions in Henk's documentation TO THE LETTER, and
read the online ax.25 HOWTOs for additional input. That gave me the tools
and info I needed to eventually get it to work.

However....

I eventually discovered it wasn't necessary. Digi_ned and aprsd will happily
share the same KISS port connected directly. Packets fed to APRS-IS don't
need to be filtered through digi_ned rules (in fact, it may be better that
they AREN'T), and aprsd should do a good job at deciding what needs to be
gated back to RF.

I'm currently running Xastir as my Igate, sharing the same KISS port with
digi_ned under a different SSID. It seems to be working pretty well, and
doesn't appear to be generating excess digipeats. IIRC, I put the Igate
call-SSID in the digi_ned BLOCK and VIABLOCK lists just to make
sure.

Well ... it appears that the comment about "following the MKISS
standard" means that the embedded digi_ned code will deal with a
multiport TNC on the serial line. It doesn't mean that it does ax.25
ports.

Sigh.

But your comment about aprsd and digi_ned sharing the serial port is
*really* interesting. I might just have to go try that with my THD7
... it would be grand if it worked!

Thanks,

The fact that you were using the embedded code completely escaped me. I
haven't experimented with that.

AFAIK, only works in KISS mode. Linux apps tend to lock the serial port and
generally don't play well with each other, but KISS ports are shareable.

But I'm no expert, believe me....

Oh. You mean KISS-mode AX.25 ports, not KISS-on-serial ports.

That makes a lot more sense; I was trying to figure out why/how Linux
was going to duplicate the data coming down the serial line, so it
could be read both by digi_ned and aprsd ...

Bummer. I thought this was a solution.

It's true that both digi_ned and aprsd seem happy to open the serial
port ... but I'm not sure it's doing aprsd any good!

Back to the drawing board. I might need to find someone with a WRT
toolchain to compile both of these for me.

Could you, for the sake of posterity, describe your setup in detail?
How are you configuring the ports, with kissattach?

OK, I have this working, after a fashion. The idea of connecting both
digi_ned and aprsd to the same KISS port was the right direction. By using
kissattach and net2kiss, I was able to do this, after some hair pulling
about ptys - the WRT uses Unix98 pty naming, but net2kiss counts on
legacy pty naming. Luckily, the kernel is compiled with support for
legacy ptys.

Google knows everything, if you look hard enough.

I finally found

http://www.lanana.org/docs/device-list/devices.txt

which told me how the legacy pty devices are numbered and named.
With that in hand, I can

# makedevs /dev/ptyp c 2 0 0 8
# makedevs /dev/ttyp c 3 0 0 8
# cat < /dev/ptyp0 &
# echo hi > /dev/ttyp0
hi
# cat: Read error: Input/output error

That looks pretty good to me. Now for the acid test...

# kissattach /dev/tts/1 1 192.168.44.3
AX.25 port 1 bound to device ax0
# net2kiss -i ax0 /dev/ptyp0 &
# net2kiss -i ax0 /dev/ptyp1 &

# digi_ned -p /dev/ttyp0:9600:1 -v &

sure enough, the radio transmits!

# aprsd &

(aprsd.conf has tncport set to /dev/ttyp1)

sure enough, the radio transmits!

And both packages seem to see the packets... aprsd is writing packets
into the log, but I think that they're raw KISS packets, not something
I can read :-/

The ptys don't survive a reboot, btw.

aprsd does *not* seem to be sending the RF packets to the net. I'm connected
to port 10151, and all I see are the aprsd NetBeacons. (Anyone know
where to find aprsd experts?)

aprsd should be dumping everrything it hears to the net. Are you using a
valid passcode?

I probably spoke too soon. It appears that aprsd isn't prepared
(at least in the manner I have it configured) to deal with a KISS
TNC - just a KISS AX.25 port (if my version supported AX.25).

Back to do some more digging around... or find the equivalent of net2kiss
that generates "plain TNC" output!

I haven't had that problem myself, but here is a link to gccmakedep:

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your help. My issue was completely ubuntu / gcc
related. A couple googles, and an install of "build-essential"
solved the compilation problems. After applying your fix, the next
set of errors were missing header files like stdio.h, time.h, etc.

Funny though, the apt-get install build-essential doesn't completely
work ... it was looking for an older version of linux-libc-dev file:

  .... linux-libc-dev_2.6.20-16.29_i386.deb and apt-get kept saying
that the file couldn't be retreived from the ubuntu mirror.

The fix was to manually download the closest version, 16.31, and
manually install it using :

dpkg install linux-libc-dev_2.6.20-16.31_i386.deb

Then proceed again with apt-get install build-essentials, which
cleanly installed.

Hi all,

I'm not able to compile with AX25, but I am able to do it with KISS.

If I run the TNC in KISS mode, is this KISS-compiled version going to
work?

Also, any clues as to where I can locate the "ax25/axconfig.h" file

The cool thing about running a KISS TNC is that multiple apps can share the
TNC. I'm currently running Digi_Ned for RF digipeating, Xastir for mapping
and Igating, APRSHog for statistics, and (occasionally) aprsd and listen -
all using the same ax25 TNC port.

IIRC, you need the ax25 development package to get the heqder files you need
to compile stuff.

Hi all,

I see on the SAR-APRS yahoogroup there is talk of SAR trackers using a path
of WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2,SAR7-7 so that they get handled OK by the normal digis and
if they are heard by a SAR digi it uses preemptive digipeating on the SAR7-7
path, ignoring the WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 section of the path.

The 'SAR digis' are likely to be Tracker2 devices used as trackers and digis
simultaneously, carried by other SAR teams, or special digis used only for
SAR purposes.

I'm curious to know how to set up Digi_ned on my laptop to do preemptive
SARn-N digipeating.

You need to create a set of rules in digi_ned.ini for SARn-N. The sample
rules for SSn-N digipeating may be a good place to start.

Hi again,

my newly compiled digi_ned 0.3.9 has a WX symbol on my Xastir map, I
can't seem to find where I can change the symbol that is transmitted.
0.3.8. used to be a D(igi) symbol, but I got that version as a
precompiled RPM, could this be hardcoded somewhere?

Changed it back to a D and have the old symbol
back.

Hallo,

A lot of APRS pages link to my homepage for the DIGI_NED files, the
PocketAPRS maps of Europe or some THD7 stuff. There always have been 2
addresses to reach the homepages hosted by my povider, via
http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl and via http://home.hetnet.nl.

It looks my provider dropped the first as of February 28 2009, since
that day you get a 404 message instead of the page and I see that all
traffic has vanished.

Please update your links to my page if you want to make it work again,
the new adres is:

http://home.hetnet.nl/~pe1dnn

The portal at http://www.qsl.net/digi_ned/ (pointing to
http://pe1mew.nl/digi_ned/) can still be reached (but also needs to be
updated).

I don't know if my provider will re-enable
http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl or that it is permanently terminated.

Sorry for the inconvenience

Kind regards,

Henk - PE1DNN.

Thanks Henk.
I am using Digi_Ned here in Hoquiam, Washington USA and have been editing the message file that creats objects and sends loal information when queried.  It's a wonderful program Henk and we all enjoy it.  I wish there was an icon for APRS that represented an airport other than the small and large airplane.  One for a small airport and also one for an International airport such as Seattle's SEA-TAC International Airport.  I replaced Ziekenhousen with AIport in the queries menu so the query message A or AI would sent the object "small plane"  (') to show our local airport and it works well.  Thanks again Henk for such a wonderful program as Digi_Ned.  73 David in Hoquian, Wa.

Hello to the group,
I've had a digi on the air her in Seattle for a few years using a
Kantronics KPC 3+, and I would like to use a pc based system for a new
fill-in digi. I have looked through the archives on this group trying
to find help for a problem I am having. I'm an RF guy, not a computer
wiz, so forgive me if my question is out of line. I have downloaded
the "Digiflop" program, and when I run it to create the floppy to run
the program, it doesn't. I have tried it on my 286, on a Pentium and on
my laptop (Win XP). Can some one point me in the right direction? I
formatted the floppy as instructed in the text file. (format a: /U) I
would like to run this on my otherwise unused 286. I've got all the RF
stuff together (the easy part..for me anyway) I'm just stuck with the
software part.
Thanks for letting me join this group, and I hope I can help and be
helped too.

The only one in the Pacific Northwest running Digi_Ned on Windows is I believe NBDIGI.
Everyone one else is using a Linux kernel.  N7BCP at G MAIL DOT COM. and you may find your answer.

Hi Tom..

I presume you went here...

http://home.hetnet.nl/~pe1dnn/#DIGI_NED

And got this...

The "DIGI_NED floppy 1.3 (0.3.5) self-extracting boot-disk image [400
kB]"

That will download Digiflop.zip.

You then need to extract the contents of that file using winzip or
similar, sounds like you did, as you say something about the
instructions that you'd have read from the included text file.

I put the contents of that zip file in a folder/directory of their own,
and then run Digiflop.exe from a command line (Start, All programs,
Accessories, Command line) at that location, with as you say a formatted
disk in A:, and you should get a bootable disk.

When you start a command line window in XP or 2k, you get what looks
like a DOS screen. Most of the usual DOS commands work OK, so in my
case I extracted the contents of Digiflop.zip to C:\tmp\dned\

I've just tried it here, and even with Windows XP, and a USB Floppy
drive, running the extracted .exe did create a bootable floppy disk just
fine, just that I can't actualy boot from it at the moment, as this PC
does not support booting from USB drives.

Anyway, in the "Command line" window...

I entered the command C:\

Then CD \tmp\dned

I then did a DIR to make sure I was where I expected to be, then just
ran digiflop...

It asked me what drive to recreate the image to, I entered A And it
just did it!

I did all that on a Windows XP laptop, and a with USB Floppy drive,
running the extracted .exe as above does appear to have created a
bootable floppy disk just fine. At least it appears to have, it looks
OK with a DIR, but as above, I can't actualy boot it to be 100% sure,
but I have created Digined boot disks this way in the past, and they all
worked OK.

Perhaps you could give us some more details about the PC you were using,
and what version of DOS or Windows you were using, plus any messages
(error or otherwise) you got while trying all that.

Cheers.

Dave G0WBX.
