- MD: G.Devarajan. Sung by K.J.Yesudas.

- In the Classical Ilayaraja articles (http://www.tfmpage.com/ci/ ),
Lakshminarayanan writes:

The second bhairavi that MSV gave was 'thirupaarkadalil pallikondayae' (swamy
iyyappan). What a
lovely song! What an unbelievable classical presentation of the essence of
bhairavi! What a
marvelous rendition by K.J.Yesudoss! You have to enjoy this song atom by atom
(anu anuvai
rasikanum!) There is no doubt that the ultimate classicism in carnatic music
lies with few ragas
like bhairavi, thodi, sankarabharanam, begada, karaharapriya and kalyani etc.
The ascendency in
the scale of knowledge and performance of even the classical musicians would be
evaluated by the
critics according to the mastery and proficiency that they show in handling
these ragas. Such is
the weightage that a ragam like bhairavi deems from the purely classical people.

- Was G.Devarajan the MD of the Malayalam version, and MSV the MD of the tamil
version?

- I like this song because of the unconventional structure of the song. Rahman
has tried a
different approach to this song. The song starts off very slowly, and moves into
a chorus-sung
feature. There is no pallavi-anupallavi-chararam structure. The entry of tablas
is also good, the
song moving with minimal percussion before that.

- Vairamuthu's lyrics are also very good in this song, bringing out the theme of
the song quite
well. The lyrics and the notes of the song are here:
http://www.tfmpage.com/notes/arr/vid_i.txt

- Indira was the directorial debut of Suhasini, tackling a oft-beaten theme of
inter-caste
clashes. This song was the introduction of Anu Hassan.

- A very rare SPB song to get into the weekend. I discovered this song for the
first time today,
and have been playing it again and again for a while now. SPB has sung this
well, check out the
starting which gives a feeling of a PBS/Ghantasala song. The song has good sitar
interludes too.

- I have no idea about the music director (sounds like xxx-nnu pOttaa adi vizhum
:) ), or the
movie. I could not find any discussion on this song at all at tfmpage or
elsewhere! I guess this
is a non-IR song of late 70s.

Song of the Day: chittukkuruvi chittukkuruvi sEdhi theriyumaa from Town Bus.

ruvi.rm

- Manisegaran writes on this song in his treatise on KVM ( in this page:
http://www.tfmpage.com/my/mani/kvm.html )

METEORIC RISE

Now we come to Town Bus a film that is still being spoke of and one that was
very much loved by
KVM himself. Before this KVM had composed music for a few movies and they may or
may not have run
well. In the case of Town Bus, it had good story line to capture the cine goers,
and at the same
time there were wonderful songs as well. In my interview with KVM I asked KVM
which was his first
film, and to my shock he said "Town Bus" I said couldn’t be. He then qualified
and stressed that
he could have composed for so many films, but Town Bus was his "first super hit
movie" and so he
decided to remember that movie as his first. Very much true! It was Town Bus
that popularised KVM
further and immortalised his name and fame.

This was another production of M.A.V Pictures of MA Venu, with story and
dialogue scripted by APN
and directed by K. Somu. N.N. Kannappa was the hero with Anjali Devi as heroine.
Other stars were
TK Ramachandran, VK Ramasamy, MN Rajam, Thamabram Lalitha etc, which clearly
indicate that this
was not a great star-rated movie. But then this film ran on the strength of
songs comnpsed by KVM.
There is a hit song here that is still hinges somewhere in our inner m,ind, and
with the slightest
effort, comes to our mind. Years, nay decades and even close to half a century
has passed since
tghis song was noised in Tamilnadu and abroad. But it continues to ring in our
ears,without losing
the sweetness. That immortal song by M.S. Rajeswary is:

Chittu Kuruvi Chittu Kuruvi Seithi Theriyuma?
Ennai Vittu Pirinji Pona KanavanVeedu Thirumbala.
Pattu methai Virichu Vachen Summa Kedakkuthu
Pasum paalai Kaaichi Eduthu vachen Aari Kidakkuthu.

Thalaiyai Vaari Poo Mudichen Vaadi Vathanguthu
Sathaa Theruvil Vanthu nNinru Ninru Kaalum Kadukkuthu

Vazhiyai Vazhiyai Paarthu Paarthu
Kannum Noguthu-Avar
Vanthaal Pesa Niraya Sethi
Nenjil Irukkuthu

There is also a sad version of this song. This song had some specialities, and
the credit goes to
KVM. It was meant for the heroin, but was compsoed in such a way that it could
be enjoyed by
elders and youngsters alike. That was the motive of the whole song, said Ka Mu
Sheriff to a few of
us when he came to attend the Tamil Writers Association in Kuala Lumpur in 1984.
He said that the song will always be part of our daily lives. Whenever we see
chittukuruvi in our
compound this song comes to our mind. The song has a sweetness that is eternal.

- I don't think we've featured M.S.Rajeswari before. Thread on MSR:

- A decent song by Mani Sharma. The film *s Vijay and Richa Pallot. Sung by

remember watching this song in Sun TV, Vijay dancing in a way not much related
to the mood of the
song.

are interesting, especially the lines "maNNaich chErum munnE, adai mazhaikku

- Wild, imaginative lyrics is not a feature of this age alone. Can you imagine a
girl with
bambarak kaN? Probably as bad a girl with strawberry kaN :-) Chandrababu though
brings life to
this song. The song is easily hummable, and has a lingering tune. It has very
short santhams. I
like the ending of the song, Chandrababu humming away in a low voice.

- The film starred Sivaji, and the music is by MSV.

Song of the Day: uravugaL thodarkathai from avaL appadiththaan.
http://www.tfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/uravugal.\
rm

- MD: IR. Sung by K.J.Yesudas. This song makes it into the all-time favorite
songs list of a lot
of people.

- This song is a favorite of mine, for the sheer mood that it evokes. "UravugaL
thodarkathai,
uNarvugaL sirukathai" defies grammar, but is a great line to start it off. The
prelude is such a
classic. The song stands out for its piano usage, and doesn't seem to have any
percussion. The
lyrics too are good in this song (Vairamuthu?)

- The film was a bold effort by Rudhraiah, *ing Rajini and Sripriya. I believe
Panneer PushpangaLE
sung by Kamal is also from this film.

- MS wrote about this song:

Let us start "Uravugal thodargathai". I think the film was Raja's thirteenth of
his career. Please
contrast this with "Machchaanai Paartheengala". We come to know the difference
in the style he
could produce just after a span of ten films. "Uravugal" is a well orchestrated
western melody
whereas the other is a folk based song though the guitar chords in the backdrop
remained
unnoticed.

Situation:

Sripriya(S) is filled with distress as whichever male she had trusted had
betrayed her. She wants
a soothing partner which she 'thinks' she finds in the hero H(though KH is the
real hero). She
finds him to be a great piano player. The music he plays is smooth that she
slowly yields herself
to him. This is the theme. The song is similar to "Nalam vaazha" in the first
aspect though is
much stronger and explicit in expression. The H tries to console her by playing
the piano. The
lyrics go as follows:

"Uravugal thodargathai
Unarvugal sirugathai"

He says
"Dear lady! All these days, you had taken decisions so impusively that they had
put you in short
term relations. A short story is exciting but ephimeral. A novel is longer but
deeper in thought
and healthy for a good length reading. Why shan't we get into a relation more
love oriented than
lust ? Uptil now, you were riding on impulses, thus falling and peaking in your
life. come with me
, i give you my pulse only to make you happy forever."
He tries to tell her that his relation with her shall be different from the one
she had been
having with others (though in the movie it turns out to be a lie). It shall be
based on the solid
foundation of love and not infatuation alone.

"Un nenjiley Baaram Atharkaagavey naanum
sumai thaangiyai maaruvaen
Un kanngalin oaram etharkaagavo eeram
kanneerai naan maatruvaen"

comparing this with "Manithargal sila neram" stanza of "Nalam Vaazha" we see
that in both the
songs the Heroes try to console their beloved first. The difference is that in
"nalam Vaazha" we
see AS imparting confidence into R thus making her mentally prepared for any
tough situation
whereas in "Uravugal" we see H telling S that he shall take care of all her
worries. Thus the
former is friendly in intonation whereas the latter is more possessive and
caring.

Noting that the first interlude is based on Veena with an ovetone of smoothness
and sadness we
come to the lines:

"Vedhanai theeralam
Verumpani vilagalaam
Vennmegamey pudhu azhagiley naamum inaiyalaam"

Now that he has conveyed his readiness to comfort her, he slowly but firmly
(unlike Nalam Vaazha)
proposes to her in the above said lines. The "laam" ending of the lines tend to
create not
uncertainty but a hypnotic effect on the heroine.

I think the second interlude is synchronous with their entering the bedroom. The
violins and the
flute piece are indicative of a joyous mood.

"Vaazhvenbadho Geetham
valargindratho naadham
naalondrilum aanandham

Nee kandatho thunbam
Ini vaazhvelaam inbam
suga raagamey aanandham"

Thus he invites her to coalesce with him.

"Nadhiyiley pudhuppunal kadaliley kalandhadhu
Nam sondhamo indru inaindhdhdhu inimai pirandhadhu"

Now that his art of seduction has culminated he declares his result. She has
succumbed to his
desire.

Song of the Day: vEru idam thEdip pOvaaLO from sila nErangaLil sila manidhargaL.

Saravanan writes on this song in the Vani Jayaram thread:

86. Veru Idam thedi povaalo- Sila nerangalil sila manithargal- MSV

Jayakanthan’s story, crafted in celluloid by A Bhimsigh. Starred Srikanth,
Lakshmi, Nagesh
(wonderful cameo), Sundaribai, Rajasulochana, Sukumari and YGP.

1977 was the year when I got to see my first film in a theatre (Aatukkara
Alamelu-How I enjoyed
it!!) I did go to SNSM, tagging along my parents, (Leo theatre, Chennai), but
couldn’t follow head
or tail of the proceedings, and expressed my disgust by going to sleep. It took
me many years to
appreciate this masterpiece - I saw it on DD when I was much older. It remains a
milestone in the
annals of Tamil cinema.

Conventionality is not morality. Self-righteousness is not religion. To attack
the first is not to
assail the last. To pluck the mask from the face of the Pharisee is not to lift
an impious hand to
the Crown of Thorns. These things and deeds are diametrically opposed: they are
as distinct as is
vice from virtue. We too often confound them-they should not be confounded.
Appearance should not
be mistaken for truth. Narrow human doctrines, that only tend to elate and
magnify a few, should
not be substituted for the world-redeeming creed of Christ. There is a
difference; and it is a
good, and not a bad action to mark broadly and clearly the line of separation
between them.

The world may not like to see these ideas dissevered, for it has been accustomed
to blend them;
finding it convenient to make external show pass for sterling worth-to let
whitewashed walls vouch
for shrines. It may hate him who dares to scrutinise and expose, to raise the
gilding and exhibit
the base metal beneath, to penetrate the sepulchre and reveal charnel relics;
but hate as it will,
it is indebted to him.

There is such a writer in our own days-Jayakanthan (birth 24.4.1934)- He is a
glittering star in
the firmament of Tamil literature. A trendsetter in many ways, he was the
natural successor of
Pudumaipithan and will forever remain the role model for all future writers.

His forays into the film world have been limited, but he has left an indelible
mark and brought a
refreshing whiff of realism into the melodramatic portals of Kodambakkam.
His first film Unnai Pol Oruvan-1965 fetched the President’s Award. His next was
Yaarukkaga
Azhudhaan-1966, which sank without a trace.
Surprisingly, A Bhimsingh, the Mughal of Melodrama in the 60s, did a volte-face
in the 70s and
thought it fit to film Jayakanthan’s novel ‘Sila Nerangalil Sila manithargal’.
He expressed
profound admiration for JK’s thorough professional approach and brilliant
screenplay. The
Bhimsingh-JK collaboration brought one more offbeat venture- ‘Oru Nadigai
Nadagam Paarkiraal’-
1978. JK’s ‘Pudhu seruppu Kadikkum’ never saw the light of the day, which fate
was shared by
‘Ethanai konam ethanai paarvai’.

Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidhargal was first published as a novel ( Meenakshi
Puthaga Nilayam,
Madurai-June 1970). It won the Sahitya Academy award in 1972.

I think Lakshmi got the ‘Urvashi’ award for her superbly realistic portrayal of
Ganga, the chief
protagonist of the tale.

However, the newly elected TN Govt.,which revived the State Awards, didn’t seem
to be too
enthusiastic about the film. See the award winners for 1977-78: 1st Best Film:
16 Vayathiniley,
2nd Best Film: Madhurageetham, 3rd Best Film: Balapareetchai!
And, with MGR at the helm, no prizes for guessing who bagged the best actress
award- of course, it
was Latha for ‘Maduraiyai meeta Sundarapandian’ (which came out in 1978).
Srividya got the Special award for ‘Madura Geetham’. 16 Vayathiniley made a
clean sweep- with SJ,
IR,Kamal and Bharathiraja collecting honours in the respective categories.

The only consolation for the film SNSM was the Award for the best kadhasiriyar
to JK.

A bold story of a college student Ganga, who, one rainy evening, accepts a lift
and allows herself
to be seduced by a stranger in the back seat of his car- her life would never be
the same again.
Years later, she meets him, and they develop a platonic relationship- she is
shunned by all, and
in the end he too leaves her- where would she go now? What will she do next? -
Lakshmi drapes over
her shoulders the coat that Srikanth has left behind, and as she ruminates over
her past, present
and future, this song is heard as an asareeri from the aathmaa- and the film
ends with the
questions unanswered.

JK has written a handful of film songs, and all of them are memorable:
Thenankeetru oonjalile (Paadhai theriyudhu paar- PBS-SJ), Azhudha kanneerum
paalaagumaa (Paadhai
theriyudhu paar-PS), Kandathai sollugiren (SNSM-MSV), Veru idam thedi(SNSM-VJ),
Nadigai paarkkum
nadagam (ONNP-Jolly Abraham-BSS), Ethanai malargal (ONNP-TMS-VJ), Chithirappoo
selai (Pudhu
seruppu kadikkum-SPB), Udal enbaar (Pudhu seruppu kadikkum-VJ), Pugazh serkkum
(Ethanai konam
Ethanai paarvai-MVD), Enna Vithiyaasam (EKEP-MVD,GA) and Ethanai konam
(EKEP-MVD).

Veru idam thedi poovaalo
Indha vedhanayil irundhu meezhvaalo
Nooru murai ival purappattaal
Vidhi noozhilayil ival agappattaal

Paruvamazhai pozhiya pozhiya
payir ellaam sezhikkaatho
Ival paruva mazhaiyaale vaazhkkai
paalaivanam aagiyathe

Tharuvadhanaal peruvathanaal
uravu thaambadhiyam aagaatho
ival tharavillai, peravillai
thanimaramaai aanaale
Siru vayathil seitha pizhai
siluvai ena sumakkindraal--
ival marupadiyum uyirppaalo?
malarenave mugippaalo?

VJ’s voice, as usual, slips effortlessly into the prescribed mood, and she lends
a tragic touch to
the philosophical lyrics. The significance of the words is clearly highlighted
by the manner in
which she prolongs some of them- ‘Povaalo’, ‘Sezhikaatho’, and the manner in
which she lays
emphasis on some of them- ‘vidhi’, ‘tharavillai, peravaillai’ shows rare
comprehension. Throughout
the song, she showers heart-warming compassion, that we are left with heavy
hearts, long after the
film ends, bemoaning the fate of the wretched Ganga.

- This peppy song is composed by MSV/TKR and sung by TMS and L.R.Eswari. The
orchestration of the
song is fantastic, and the rhythms are great. If I remember right, MSV appears
in the movie
itself, wearing a suit and conducting the orchestra. TMS too appears on-screen
singing this song.
Nagesh dances with his trademark style vaaththu dance. Knowledgeable guys can
tell us whether this
song reflected the popular western songs of that time. Some of the things are
unique to this song
and may not be found in earlier songs, like TMS singing, "Oh, azhagu oru magic
touch! Oh-hO aasai
oru kaadhal switch!". Can the second interlude be a good example of
counterpoint? LRE makes a
grand entry in the second stanza, her way of lingering at "kaaRROdu" and
"nERROdu" is great.

- This was an AVM movie.

- MD is IR, sung by S.P.Shailaja and Deepan Chakravarthy. I don't think we've
featured either of
the singers before. Enakkaaga Kaathiru was a good album by IR, dhaagam edukkira
and O NenjamE the
other good songs.

- The lyrics stand out in this song. Vairamuthu writes:
pani mazhai vizhum
paruvath thuyil ezhum
sillendra kaatraada
sErndhu manam thaanaada
kanavugaLin oorkkOlamE

I like the prelude of this song. Gives us the feel of "aarOdum maNNil".

- Nitin writes: The instrumentation in this song provides the backdrop of a
night where the rains
have fallen very hard and you are trying to find your way back to your little
wooden home up in
the hills with the help of the moonlight that is trying to clear through the
dense grey clouds to
find you.

- This is the first big film for Ramesh Vinayagam. This is Kamalhaasan's home
production, *ing
Maadhavan and Geethu Mohandas, directed by Mouli. This promises to be a good
comedy film. Ramesh
Vinayagam had composed for Yei Nee Romba Azhagaa IrukkE earlier.

- The lyrics is by Pradeep and is sung by Chinmayee and Ramesh Vinayagam
himself. He doesn't do a
bad job in this slow, waltzy song. The piano background, the small brushes of
flutes, and no
unwanted orchestration, make this a good song. Chinmayee's singing is also quite
good, a welcome
change from the likes of Sadhana Sargam.

- Kannadasan has produced several songs that distill the stories of their films
and present them.
This is one of the best of them. PS has cracked this song. Her pronounciation
and modulations are
very good in this song. V.Kumar is the MD of this song.

- Karthi writes on this song:
"I have another song which was also supposedly written by Kannadhasan for
Kamarajar but in the end
used by him for the movie 'Arangetram':

The song is....

Moothaval Nee Koduthaai
Vazhvile Munnetram...

I especially love these lines:

...Megathaal Mazhai Pozhiyum
Megathukku Laabam enna.....

Thannaiye Theithu Tharum
Sandanam Undan Ullam
Mannile Oruvarillai
Mangai Unakkeedu Solla...

This is the story of a poor girl who becomes a prostitute in order to protect
her family. Her
sister who was groomed by her happens to sing this song on radio in praise of
her but sadly
though... "

- This song never ceases to amaze me. If you read kaNNan en sEvagan as a
bharathiyaar kavidhai,
you would think it is quite hilarious. KVM has turned it on its head, to make it
a melancholic,
sentimental song. The song is a background one, with Sivaji toiling away helping
S.V.Ranga Rao,
and S.V.R looking at Sivaji as kaNNan. Seergazhi's rendition makes this doubly
memorable. I like
the progression of music in the line "naNbanaai, mandhiriyaai,
nallaasiriyanumaai, paNbilE
dheivamaai... paarvaiyilE sEvaganaai". What a great piece of work!

- SK writes: "KVM scored music for Padikkaatha Methai. I have seen the movie
several times in the
company of family and friends. Everytime the song engirundhO vandhaan,
idaichchaadhi naan endraan
gets over in the movie, I look around to find that almost everyone has tears in
their eyes!"

- Lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.tfmpage.com/ppp/engirundho_vandhaan.html

Hi,

I am a new member of this group. I have one complaint abt modern tamil film
music fans. A lot of them think that TFM starts with Ilayaraja and ends with A R
Rehman. They seem to be totally in the dark abt top MDs, singers etc of the
pre-Ilayaraja era. Why? The situation in Hindi is totally different. A lot of
youngsters are quite conversant with old film songs, songs of the 50s and 60s.
My interest in TFM remains restricted to songs from the 50s and 60s.

Regards,

Ramaswamy

- Prabhu, you asked for it. Here's a great song sung by SPB, for his birthday
today. MD is MSV,
and MSV has also sung a portion of the song.

- Just listen to the mesmerising voice of SPB that makes this a great song. He
does great
sangathis, and pulls them off with nonchalant ease. MSV does a great bit at the
start to start off
the song too.

- Srikanth writes on this song:

guys,
I happened to watch the song being recorded. This was for a R.C.Sakthi film.

SPB learnt the tune in about 30 mins, but both of them was going on and on
singing it in differet
ways they could... a treat to watch....
finally ended up in singing what msv told him to do. SPB did not sing anything
more than msv had
composed.

Secondly msv's portions were not recorded during that time. When I asked msv
about the ragam he
commented yemen kalyani based.

Basically the sangathees in the song are very very good, just hear the
variations in the song for
each line, all of them are different....this is one of the reason I am a big fan
of msv,
:)surprising complicated tunes. , follow the tabla change overs
also...interesting.There are many
unheard gems from msv in 80's and 90's, one such song is sonthagalai vazthi
sindhu paduven (SPB)
for nilave malare, , rajathi (KSC) in rajathi kalyanam ,there is also a good
song in thali
thanam..by vanij,
i am sure no one would have heart it. :)

- I found this off-beat song in Uyirodu Uyiraaga very intriguing and
interesting. The Music is by
Vidhyasagar, and the song is sung by Ghanshyam. I could have sworn that this was
by Ajoy
Chakraborti.

- The song has great lyrics (Vairamuthu?). I've written down the lyrics. It is
like the modern
version of "mayakkamaa kalakkamaa". Here it goes:

Nadhi engE vaLaiyum?
karai reNdum aRiyum
madhi engE alaiyum?
aagaayam aRiyum
vidhi engE viLaiyum?
adhu yaarukkuth theriyum

adhai aRindhu sollavum madhi illai
madhi irundhaal adhan pEr vidhi illai (nadhi)

virumbi yaarum piRappadhum illai
virumbiya paaththiram kidaippadhum illai
pidikkum vaazkkai amaindhadhum illai
salikkum manadhil sandhOsham illai

ettu naaL vaazhum pattaampoochi
iRappaip paRRi ninaippathum illai
arupathu vayadhu aayuL koNdavan
irubadhu nimidam vaazhvadhum illai

naaLai enbadhai vidhiyidam koduththu
indru enbadhai eduththu nadaththu
kaNNeer thuLiyai kazhaRRi eduththu
punnagai aNindhu pOrai nadaththu (nadhi)

kanavu kaaNbadhu kaNgaLin urimai
kanavu kalaippadhu kaalaththin urimai
sidhaindha kanavai sErththu sErththu
araNmaNai kattudhal avaravar thiramai

ovvoru nodiyilum unnadham kaaNbadhu
ulagil pirandha uyirgaLin urimai
niRaindha vaazhvu nEraadhirundhaal
vandhadhil niRaivadhu vaazhvin kadamai

naaLai enbadhai vidhiyidam koduththu
indru enbadhai eduththu nadaththu
kaNNeer thuLiyai kazhaRRi eduththu
punnagai aNindhu pOrai nadaththu (nadhi)

- The first guitar interlude adds to the flow of the song. The song also has
above average vocal
chorus. My respect for Vidhyasagar keeps increasing as I find out more gems from
his music.
Uyirodu uyiraaga was a musical hit by him, "poovukkellaam siragu muLaiththadhu"
was featured in
SOTD before.

- Does anyone know about this singer Ghanshyam?

Song of the Day: en gaanam indru arangErum from eera vizhik kaaviyangaL.

http://www.tfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engaanam.\
rm

- Here's a classic song to get into the weekend mood. This is a song from one of
IR's greatest
albums. EVK had IR at his creative best, experimenting with guitar interludes,
with beautiful
piano pieces and what not. The song, en gaanam indru arangErum, itself, you
might have heard in
other songs of IR. But the orchestration, the mood, the mind-blowing prelude,
all makes this song
unique.

- Shankar describes the song thus:
2.En gAnam -IR,Jency antony.
The prelude has 2 acoustic guitars set to diff tunes, when the pallavi starts,
one of them goes
silent ,the other one follows the vocals.
The first interlude has a conversation of a piano with a group of violins.
The second stanza starts after a violin piece and it pauses suddenly. The guitars
take over and now
Jency starts.
This song can be easily given 9/10.

- The lyrics for this song is by IR, apparently.

- Udhaya terms eera vizhik kaaviyangaL as:
Easily the best experimental album by Ilayaraaja. Spellbinding musical
vignettes-En Gaanam,
Thendralilae-with Debussy-like piano pieces by IR that defy any available
musical label. Wrought
in my favorite IR era, back when he roamed the musical arena unleashed with
reckless abandon,
before religion would find and ground him, before blockbuster producers would

Song of the Day: ponnezhil poothadhu pudhu vaanil from kalangarai viLakkam.

http://www.tfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ponnezhil\
.rm

- The lyricist is Panchu Arunachalam. MD is MSV and sung by TMS & PS.
the song goes as follows:
TMS: sivakaami....sivakaami....
PS: oh oh ...
TMS: ponnezhil pUthadhu pudhu vAnil
veNpani thUvum nilavE nil
en manath thOttaththu vaNNap paRavai
senRadhu engE sol sol sol....

the song involves some different usage also..for example the usage of "thennai
vanam" in the first
charanam.

thennai vanaththinil unnai mugam thottu
eNNaththaich chonnavan vAdugirEn
eNNaththaich chonnavan vAdugirEn
un iru kaN pattu puN patta nenjathil (note the good usage of vallinams here)
un pattu kaip padap pAdugirEn
(pon)

TMS really tries to be meticulous in his pronounciation at the end of the
charanam. the lines of
the next charanam are also good.

munnam en uLLaththil mukkani chakkarai
aLLik koduththa pon mAdam engE
aLLik koduththa pon mAdam engE
kiNNam nirambida senkanich chARuNNa
mun vandhach chevvandhi mAlaiyengE
then PS takes over in her wonderful voice:
ponezhil pooththadhu thalaivaa vaa...
...

in the next charanam PS sings

thennavan manRaththil senthamizh kaN kondu
vandhadhu ponvaNdu pAdikkondu
vandhadhu ponvaNdu pAdikkondu
mannavan uLLaththil sondham vandhALenRu
senRadhu pUnthendral Adikkondu
pon..
this charanam sees a distinct change in mood from the earlier part of the song,
and PS's voice
resonates in this part, making it a wonderful experience.

i guess then these lines follow:
en udal enbadhu un udal enRa pin
ennidam kObam koLLuvadhO (an oft used imagery)
ennidam kObam koLLuvadhO
onRil onRAnapin thannaith thandhAna pin
unnidam nAnenna solluvadhO
pon..
this charanam is nothing much to write home about in its meaning. but the word
usage is good and
fits the tune well.

- Full lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.tfmpage.com/ppp/ponnezhil.html

- Manisegaran writes:

"Ponnezhil Poothathu Puthuvaanil" is the first song that Panchu Arunasalam
composed. He had been
assisting Kannadasan for a long time. When Kannadasan did not turn up on time
for the composing of
the songs in Saradha, Panchu Arunasalam volunteered. As he was composing the
song Manamakaley
Manamakaley vaa vaa, Kannadsan turned up and corrected the following line:

"Kunamirukkum kulamirukkum Engal Vaasalil"
Therefore this is not the first song of Panchu.

When Kalangarai Vilakkam was in the offing an attempt was made to avoid
Kannadasan totally. Vali
and Panchu were brought in.(Music for this film was by MSV/TKR, but some records
only mention the
name of MSV.) It was in this film that Panchu gave his independent work.
Ponnezhil poothathu is
often quoted by Panchu in almost all his interviews.

The real split between Panchu and Kannadasan started in Gowravam. The film was
almost completed.
But the song sequences were not pictured, as Kannadasan was touring in Malaysia.
I think Hindu
Rangarajan was involved in the movie. The producers were waiting in Tamilonadu
while Kannadasan
was holidaying in Malaysia. Pancu arunasalam heard of the delay and whispered
his interest in
composing all the songs for Gowravam so as to avoid further delay in releasing
the film on time.
But there are some in the cine film who are adamant on getting Kannadasan's
songs. One is
Rangarajan who told off Panchu in a diplomatic way that they do not mind waiting
for Kannadasan's
return, whatever the time period consumed.

When Kannadasan returned Rangarajan told this move by Panchu, and kannadasan who
was shocked
remarked: "Naan Paalootti valatha Kili. Naalaikku athu ennoda kachery paada
varutho?"
Those who were around were impressed by that remark and requested Kannadasan to
use this line as a
pallavi for a scene that depicts a similar seperation scene in the movie. That
is how the song

"pallootti Valartha kili
pazham koduthu paartha kili
naan valartha pachai kili naalai varum kacherikku"

- Kanchana noticed a wonderful wordplay in the first charaNam:

Bhaskar, here are the two interpretations for the last line of this verse from
ponnezhil
pooththadhu:

munnam en uLLaththil mukkani sarkkarai
aLLik koduththa ponmAdam engE
aLLik koduththa ponmAdam engE
kiNNam nirambidach chenganich chAruNNa
munvandha chevvandhi mAlai engE

Obviously, the hero is reminiscing about the good old times and is missing the
heroine. One
interpretation is the straightforward one, where he is referring to the heroine
as chevvandhi
mAlai.
To get the other possible interpretation, split the lines as follows:
mun vandha chev (v)andhimAlai engE
"nAngaL iruvarum sErndhu kiNNam nirambidach chenganich chARuNNa andRu vandha
chenniRam porundhiya
azhagiya mAlaippozhudhu indRu engE pOnadhu?" (metaphorically the same meaning as
before--"where
are the good old times?")
Of course, we don't know whether Panchu Arunachalam intended a wordplay here,
but either way the
entire song is beautiful!

- This is my favorite song from 16 vayadhinile (more than sendhoorap poovE). An
absolutely
hilarious song, where the lyrics are very different from the usual run of the
mill songs.
Kannadasan has penned this song, letting his imagination run wild from the point
of view of a
sappaaNi. The objective is to make Sridevi (mayilu) laugh, and Kamal sets about
with this nonsense
song, his voice matched by the braying of a donkey. Malayasia Vasudevan has
freaked out in this
song, and IR has done a great job with absolutely no pretensions and keeping the
music as close as
possible to the situation's demand. I like the initial prelude, and then MV
catching his sruthi.

- This was the first song for Malaysia Vasudevan.

- In an interview, Graphics artist Venky was asked about Bharathiraja's comments
on graphics. BR
had said that using graphics was nothing useful, and didn't serve any purpose.
Venky, in an
interview, rebuffed this by pointing out that this song was a prime example of
imagination going
wild in lyrics, and said that if one imagines the lyrics, the situations in the
song will become a
great graphics laden picture!

- Amar posted the lyrics of this song:

Aattukkutti Muttaiyittu Kozhikutty Vanthathunnu

Kathaiyilley Saami Ithai Kaanuthu Bhommi;

- This is one of the best songs sung by L.R.Eswari. Known for her peppy songs
and rollicking dance
numbers, this was a complete volte-face for her. She renders this song in a mild
seductive manner,
as if whispering to one's ear. Lyrics is by Vaali, and Music by V.Kumar, in this
Balachander film.
The film starred Gemini Ganesan and Jeyanthi. A naive village girl (Jeyanthi) is
out of place in
Gemini's life style. He asks her to wear a nightie that makes her uncomfortable,
and her helpless
situation is well portrayed in this song.

- Contrast this with another song in the same movie, "naan saththam pOttuth
thaan paaduvEn, unnai
sandhiththE thaan theeruvEn".

- V.Kumar got MSV to sing a song for him in this movie, "unakkenna kuraichchal,
nee oru raja".

- A beautiful, melodious number by Balasaraswathy Devi and T.A.Mothi. We
discovered Balasaraswathi
in "malligaip poo jaadhi roja" which was featured in SOTD a while back. She does
a good job in
this simple song, which doesn't seem to have an elaborate orchestration.

- Vicky writes on this song in the Old Songs thread:
It been a while that I brought to the attention of this forum, a recollection
from my memory of
some old nostalgic songs which I now share with this forum. Two of them was sung
by my own
favorite Balasaraswathi. She teamed up with TA Mothi in both of them. One was "
Malai Nila Vara
Vendum ..Vanna Marutham Veesida Vendum..Ialam Jodi Kuyil Inbamai Koova Vendum".
A silky,
meloncholic, mesmerising song to be listened in late evening. The way TA Mothi
lends his voice at
the end of the song is just amazing and beyond one's crude imagination. Though
her repertoire in
Tamil was short-lived, needless to confirm, she did contribute to some of the
most memorable songs
that I have known. The second song is titled "Kandukonden Naane...Kadal Enna
Vendru Thane". Looks
like TA Mothi was swept away in the tidal waves of male palyaback singers who
would dominate TFM
including TMSounderajan, AMRaja, PB Sreenivos in late 50s and the 60s. Let us
pause a to know this
little known singer...He did really have blast with PBhanumathi, the song from
the 1949 Gemini
movie "Aboorva Sagotharargal" titled "Aaha Aaduvome..." and in the movie "Sabash
Meena" (TG
Lingappa) (correct me if I am wrong).

- Not sure who the MD of this song is.

- A good song by V.S.Narasimhan to get to the weekend. Sung by SPB and SJ. This
song has a
distinct hindi film song feel to it (due to the rhythms?). The guitar interludes
in this song is
pretty good.

- A different, off-beat song by SPB. MD is M.B.Srinivasan, lyrics by
Jayakanthan. This is a slow,
melancholic song.

- The film never got released.

- Saravanan writes this on Jayakanthan in the VJ thread:

The only consolation for the film SNSM was the Award for the best kadhasiriyar
to JK.

JK has written a handful of film songs, and all of them are memorable:
Thenankeetru oonjalile (Paadhai theriyudhu paar- PBS-SJ), Azhudha kanneerum
paalaagumaa (Paadhai
theriyudhu paar-PS), Kandathai sollugiren (SNSM-MSV), Veru idam thedi(SNSM-VJ),
Nadigai paarkkum
nadagam (ONNP-Jolly Abraham-BSS), Ethanai malargal (ONNP-TMS-VJ), Chithirappoo
selai (Pudhu
seruppu kadikkum-SPB), Udal enbaar (Pudhu seruppu kadikkum-VJ), Pugazh serkkum
(Ethanai konam
Ethanai paarvai-MVD), Enna Vithiyaasam (EKEP-MVD,GA) and Ethanai konam
(EKEP-MVD).
