UNESCO International Petition to Safeguard
Afghanistan's Cultural
Heritage

We, the undersigned, plead for an immediate end to the
Taliban
edict to demolish Afghanistan's cultural heritage. We
further urge
the Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammed Omar to
enter into
dialogue with the international community -- including
the Arab and
Islamic governments that overwhelmingly have condemned
these
actions -- in order to explore proposals to safeguard
this
irreplaceable cultural heritage from further senseless
destruction.

The edict of the 26th of February 2001 to destroy
pre-Islamic and
Buddhist objects-- including the world's largest
standing Buddha
statues at Bamiyan-- runs counter to all the basic
principles of
respect, tolerance and the wisdom upon which Islam is
based, and
is a breach of the Taliban pledge made in 1999. We
plead with
Taliban authorities to stop this irreversible assault
on two millennia
of Afghanistan's artistic and cultural achievements,
treasured not
only as the spiritual birthright of Buddhists
everywhere but also as
a universal cultural heritage for people of all faiths
and
nationalities.

Hi Friends: I don't know if this is the right place to to put this out. In
fact I'm not sure who connected me with the dharmanetwork. Probably from the
sangha list in Sarnath. So I am going to write this with the hope that
someone may reply. I am now back in B.C. and still hoping that I may find
someone who would like to be in my little cottage on Bowen Island from about
mid/June to mid/August so I could do the sangha walk in France. When I am
over my jetlag I will work out how I can really connect and put my info in
the right place. Until then metta to all.

dear Friends: Have just arrived back in Vancouver from India and am very
jetlagged. In fact I really don't know who I am connecting with. But for
those who may know me I will let you know that the more usual e-mail address
I use is kanet@... I hope someone will connect with me and that I will
find out how I can give information on the cottage that I live in that I am
hoping to sublet for a couple of months from mid/June to about mid August or
later. I am looking for someone who is really into gardening. All for now as
I have no concentration any more so will just send this out and hopefully
work out how to make good use of the dharma network. Bye for now Kami

Where To Find Peace?

Question:"How much does
                  where you live,
                  your physical surroundings,
                  affect your spirituality?"

The following short story is by an unknown author.

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would
paint the best picture of peace.  Many artists tried.  The King
looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked
and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake.  The lake was a perfect mirror for
peaceful towering mountains all around it.  Overhead was a blue
sky with fluffy white clouds.  All who saw this picture thought that
it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains too.  But these were rugged and
bare.  Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, and in which
lightning played.  Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming
waterfall.  This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush
growing in a crack in the rock.  In the bush a mother bird had built
her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the
mother bird on her nest ... perfect peace.

The King chose the second picture.

The King explained, "peace does not mean to be in a place where
there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.  Peace means to be in the
midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the
real meaning of peace."

(END OF STORY)

The above bit of writing continues to inspire and serve me well.

It doesn't say to me however, that we should actively place ourselves
in "war zones" to live out or stretch our spirituality.  I take it that
if we happen to find ourselves in these less than peaceful "zones", we
would do well to remember the above message.

The state of "physical surroundings" affect some of us more than others.
If this bothers a person to the extent that he behaves unbecomingly of
his inner spiritual understanding, then by all means, he should get away
from such a "toxic" place.

You all moreorless know that popular Metaphysical saying: "Heaven
and Hell are not geographical positions; they are states of mind/being".
In that context, we can't run away from the human condition and the
situations that this "condition" gives rise to.  We have to find a way
to cope with these challenges as they present themselves.  We have to
recognize that the same challenges moreorless, will present themselves
regardless of where we live.  Again, the old saying: "We can run but
we can't hide".

The human condition is generally, one of challenges and a matter of
survival.  Sooner or later, it becomes a personal question of *which*
set of problems we choose to live with.

It's popular to say that life is a series of choices, isn't it?  Yet,
when we think of it ... we didn't choose our parents, families, neighbors,
peers, teachers and other influences in our lives.  As children, we
didn't exercise these "choices" simply because we were unable to do so.

I like to think that as adults, we are more empowered to make these
choices.

Dear Sangha,
This is a short message just to let those of you who know us keep in touch,
and also to ask for some feedback from anyone who may wish to respond.
After leaving India in April last year, Kirsten and I spent a month in Gaia
House. We then continued to Tapovan forest retreat center in the French
Pyrenees, where we spent about 5 months, on and off. It was a very
challenging time for us, and many difficult issues popped up, in our search
for a more permanent resting place, after many years on the road.
In the end it turned out that Tapovan wasn't the place for us at this time,
and so we moved temporarily to live on a piece of land not far away from
Tapovan, in an eight meter long 'bauwagen' (something like a circus wagon).
We have a wonderful view of the snowcaped peeks and 80 acres of mixed forest
and open fields to roam in. The owners of the land run a kind of
'hermitage'/hostel and lodge visitors for a fee, in the house as well as in
tents.
Our address is:

We are currently absolutely open to suggestions. We are in need of a
supportive invironment where we can serve, and practice as well as earn a
living. so if anyone knows of anything worthwhile please let us know.

We are still in search of community life, which incourages real inquiry and
honesty, and lends support, for those of us who wish to live the dharma
outside the structure of a monastic tradition, or the India-West-India-West
cycle. The form may vary, from the very communal to a loose affiliation, but
it is the Sangha support for inquiry and exploration, which I think is the
main issue.
I invite anyone who may have any views and opinions on the matter of
community living, or who can share some practical information like where,
how, and who, to contact us, or to open a discussion on one of the Sangha's
Internet sites. Please, if you read this, share it with others, who may not
have Internet access (93% of the world...). Any response is welcome.

With love, Dan.

Peace Pilgrimage from Tapovan to Plum Village, 21st June - 10th July
2001

The idea for a pilgrimage came from a group led by Christopher Titmuss
and Martin Aylward which met in the summer at Tapovan, an insight
meditation centre in south western France. The group met to explore the
practice of dharma in everyday life and ideas for strengthening and
supporting sangha, particularly in the west, where sangha qualities such
as open-heartedness, simplicity and interbeing can often seem to go
against dominant cultural trends. The Pilgrimage will be a chance to
walk together with other dharma friends with all the support and
connections therein implied. We are hoping that this will become a
fairly large-scale gathering and want to extend the invitation pretty
widely. We also wish to invite monks and nuns from buddhist orders and,
if possible, other denominations and groups, to walk with us as well.

Below is a general summary of what is proposed so far: in order to make
it actually happen there are some crucial parts of the arrangements
still to come together and ideas and help with them is needed. Please
contact us if you are interested in helping.

THE WALK: to take 19 days over some 270 kms, setting out from Tapovan
(close to Limoux, Roussillon) on 22 June and reaching Plum Village
(about 85kms east of Bordeaux) on 10 July 2001, which Plum Village have
told us is the day before the start of their next annual Summer Retreat.
There is also an Outdoor Camping Meditation Retreat at Tapovan with
Yanai Postelnik and Martin Aylward taking place between 9-17 June and
the gathering for the Pilgrimage would follow this at Tapovan on 21
June. For those for whom it is possible, this will create the
opportunity for a sustained period of retreats and pilgrimage.

THE ROUTE will run mostly through rural areas, but also touching towns
and villages so that the Pilgrimage can connect with as many people as
possible on the way. At present the route is projected to run north
west from Tapovan via the Fanjeaux and Canal du Midi areas to Toulouse,
then along the River Garonne via Castel Sarrasin and Moissac to
Villeneuve sur Lot. The final 60 or so kms continues north through
smaller towns and villages to Plum Village. This is not a final and
fixed route at the moment and we would be pleased to hear from anyone
who has buddhist friends, or knows of any other groups in areas on the
way between Tapovan and Plum Village who would be happy for us to make
contact, or who might offer us camping or other accommodation.

The Walk will cover about 10-15 kms a day with some times of rest or
shorter walking. Walkers will be welcome to take part in all or some of
the Pilgrimage: a day, a week, as much or as little as they wish.
Nearer the time there will be an itinerary and ways of contacting the
Walk for those wanting to join along the way.

DAILY SCHEDULE: there will be times each day for group meditation and
periods of silence, though the Pilgrimage will not be run as a silent
retreat. On most days there will be an evening activity such as a
dharma talk, a sharing or some dharma discussion and time around the
campfire. Several Insight Meditation teachers have already shown an
interest in joining us to give talks. Activities would be open to all
and we would hopefully draw more people to join us as we go.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: most nights will be spent camping and walkers
will need to bring their own tents and sleeping bags. It is hoped that
some nights might be spent in sports or village halls or some other
similar space, depending on our numbers. If anyone has any contacts or
ideas for facilities like these, please let us know. Food will be
vegetarian. We will need a van to pick up supplies and which will go on
ahead each day to the next destination where the evening meal and picnic
packs for the following day will be prepared. Cooking equipment is
already available, but we will need:

* EITHER: A VAN DONATED OR HIRED
* OR: SPONSORSHIP MONEY TO BUY OR HIRE A VAN
* SOMEONE TO UNDERTAKE TO DRIVE IT
* SPONSORSHIP MONEY FOR SET-UP COSTS: PETROL, PURCHASE OF INITIAL
SUPPLIES
*
CRÊCHE: we want to support families with children to be able to take
part fully in the Pilgrimage and for children to have resources for
play. We will therefore also need:

* A SECOND VAN AS A "CRÊCHEMOBILE"

COST: there will be no fixed daily cost for the period of the Walk.
Each day we will pass round a "magic hat" and invite contributions for
our needs from walkers and people coming to look and listen.
Participants would have to cover the costs of their travel to and from
the Pilgrimage at whatever point they join or leave it. For the cost of
retreats please contact Tapovan and Plum Village.

TAPOVAN: For information about the Forest Retreat contact Martin and
Gail at Tapovan, Marses, 11300 Festes St André, France. Tel:
+33(0)4.68.31.87.73. email: tapovan@....

PLUM VILLAGE: Though they have given their support to the Pilgrimage,
they are not involved at all in its organisation, so please do NOT
contact them for details about it. For information about retreats at
Plum Village please see their website on www.plumvillage.org.

help please contact Sue Cox: s.cox@... Tel: + 44 (0)20

Dear Friends,
To answer queries and questions, here are the definitive dates etc for the
Bodh Gaya retreats and the Sarnath Programme for 2001:

Jan 7-15, led by Norman Feldman, Yanai Postelnik, Leela Janssen, Mark
Coleman

Jan 15-23, led by Norman Feldman, Yanai Postelnik, Leela Janssen, Mark
Coleman

Jan 23 - Feb 4, led by Christopher Titmuss, Tineke Osterloh, Martin Aylward

Sarnath Programme from Feb 4 - 28

With the sad death of Thomas earlier this year, preparations for the
retreats will be much more difficult for then managers. If you are willing
and able to be in Bodh Gaya earlier than the start of the retreats to help
with all the work that needs to be done in the run up to January 7th, your
help would be very much appreciated.
If you have any further questions, please contact Caroline, Anton, Peggy and
David who will be managing the retreats. Contact details follow. Email has
apparently 'sort of'' arrived in Bodh Gaya.......

Hallo, glad to see more and more signing up. A couple of

sign up instructions somewhat.
Secondly, if you want to reply to somebody who's written a message through
the group address, don't just hit reply as the message you send back will go
out to everybody in the group! Just send it to their ordinary email address.
Warm greetings from the peace and beauty of Autumn in the forest meanwhile,

she describes events that are very alarming, talks about army and settelers shooting at the village without any provocation from the village people, without anyone throwing stones or trying to shoot anyone. she said that since they are there (a few peace orientated people), the villagers have not done any violent act, she can swear upon that. she described events that have occured  in a 2 nights of 60 setteler cars that came after dark and started shooting in the village, sometimes with the army' trying to provoke contra action from the palestinians side, without success. she said, in one ocasion she took the microphone and pleede the army and settelers to stop firing, and that during her talk there have been 3 gunshots- one was aimed directly at her, they were shooting in the direction of the talker. she said that on thursday night the settelers and army shot again, she was present and she can testify that the palestinians had no weapon and were just protesting.
she described people, who cannot get out of the village to see a doctor, to pick their olives (which are rottening on the trees), who don't have enough food to eat or water to drink. some peace supporters went with the palestinians to pick the olives for 3 days and so they were allowed to do so, because their presence there, and there were settlers there who came and cursed them and threatened them.
she wants to start an international movement of  civil observrce and violence prevention- people who would come and take a look for themselves of the events and try to stand in between the 2 sides, to make sure that there's no violence acted upon both sides.
she said that what happened there on friday was the last straw for the palestinians there, when they saw that the army attackes their guests, the peace promoting people that were there, so the last option was to react.
neta's phone number is: 050-757504
when i told her about the contra reactions via e-mail she was really happy to hear, especially those who weren't in her actions favour- she believes it's very important for everybody to know what is really happening and not just what the media is partly showing us.
she basically invites everybody to come and witness for themselves what is happening in both sides.

may peace preveils around and inside us.

Dear Martin,

Sorry for replying late.A feedback.
I found it quiet difficult to sign up for the egroups and I do not think
that it has something to do with English as my second language, sure it does
not make it easier.
I was confused what to do and especially the fact that I could not see the
line of instruction" Step by step becoming a member" anymore after I started
doing the first step.Is this clear, I wonder? What I mean, the first step was
for example "1. visit www.egroups.com.....". O.k I did that but then I
found it takes a lot of time and it was confusing to go back to the steps
of instruction to see what step 2.has to offer.Would be easier to see the
steps of instruction all the time.

In the end it took a long time to sign up, it was costly (what I guess for a
lot of poor little Dharma friends without a computer will be problematic).I
gave up that day trying to find out how the Databases work and did it later,
another time.
If there is a way to describe it in a simpler way ,please , probably others
and myself would appreciate it.Sorry, but I can not give you any fantastic
ideas about the "How"( only the point I mentioned before about the steps of
instructions)

Hope you are happy and dancing the boogie of life
Love
Martina

Dear friends
I just checked the egroups page today and was glad to see people beginning
to sign up - 16 members so far. We don't really expect it to take off until
next year, after exposure in Bodh Gaya and Sarnath and in the Gaia House
Newsletter. For now, there's a couple of things I wanted to ask you:
How easy was it to sign up? Was it straightforward or confusing? Do the
instructions need to be rethought out so as to make it easier for people?
Secondly, perhaps accessing the Databases is not very clear? These are the
main reason for the egroups account. So far, the "Contacts/Places to stay"
Database has 3 entries, the "Right Livelihood" Database has one!
Do none of you have places to live? (I do realise that this is entirely
possible given our network of Dharma friends ) or were the Databases not
made clear or easy enough to access and input info?
I'd really appreciate hearing from any of you who may have comments or
suggestions.
Warmest greetings to you all meanwhile
With warmth of heart, in the Dharma

my dear other fifteen co-pilots aboard the good ship dharmanetwork
egroups thing

after much being hopeless at figuring this thing out i have got
myself on egroups dharmanetwork thing. i now realize that the only
things i've ever learnt to do with the internet are play about in
hotmail and... and... no that really is it.

it all looks very good and nice to me and although most bits are
somewhat blank and empty at present it looks like all these features
could keep me distracted from the breath for hours on end. i look
forward to it.

i'd like to make a request. it would be really nice if in the
'members' list people's actual names appeared alongside their often
cryptic email addresses. i recognize some of you from your whacky
combinations of numbers and letters @ this that and the other but
some i don't...

from the 'main page' you can click on 'my profile' and there click
'edit profile' and subsequently fill in first name and last name
under 'public info'. it would be lovely to know who you are! just a
suggestion...

so briefly i am david of england and sorry can't offer a place for
wandering sanghoids to rest even for a night because i myself am
presently squeezed into a cupboard in my parents kitchen for
accomodation with only my teddybear jeeves and a copy of i am that
for company. but i do hope to see some or quite possibly all of you
in bodhgaya this january where i am going to be co-managing the thai
temple retreats with peggy caroline and anton.

i welcome messages from any of you and wish you all well. so let's
help dharmanetwork fly.

love

Hi Martin,

hope you're all well and dancing in the infinite. Sorry but I don't
think I'm your man for dharmanet contact person, given my perpetual
homelessness. In fact I'm about to return to mother india in 3 days
and you know what email is like in bodhgaya and sarnath!

See you back at wat thai. hari om

Dear DharmaNetwork friends
Hello form Tapovan. The fact that you are receiving this means that you managed to sign up and register with egroups without too much trouble. One or two people  however, not being so computer literate, have found it difficult to follow the process. So I'm wondering if one of you who understands well how to do it, wouldn't mind being a contact person for those who get confused, and would be able to direct them in how to do it. It would probably be a case of having a fairly standard response letter stored in your computer, and maybe adding a couple of details specific to the persons questions. And probably better that the contact person be somebody of fixed abode with regular and easy access to a computer. Anybody willing? Your email address would be up on the site as the  contact person. Right now there would probably be very little to do in the way of answering queries, but if it becomes well known and many start to sign up, it may need some more time and attention. We'll see.........
Hoping to hear from someone...............
Wishing you well
In the Dharma
