Subject: Big trouble
Click here to tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid:
Alarming news: the public option could be dead within days, and we need Harry Reid to act fast to save it.1
A few conservative Democrats, including Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman, are threatening to block health care reform—all of it—if the rest of the Democratic Caucus doesn't agree to drop or weaken the public option.2
A tiny minority of conservatives could cut out the heart of reform, supported by 86% of Democrats. The latest news is that to appease them a weak compromise is being unveiled within days.3
But it doesn't have to be this way. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can still stop this, if he continues to fight. Reid has shown that he's willing to be a leader in fighting for the public option, and now we need him more than ever.
So we're sending an emergency petition to Senator Reid asking him to do everything in his power to persuade these senators to support real health care reform. Can you sign the petition to Harry Reid? Clicking here will add your name:
The petition says: "Senator Reid, don't let a few senators derail what the majority of Americans want and need. We're counting on you to use every tool at your disposal to make sure the Senate bill includes a public option."
As Senate Majority Leader, Reid can apply pressure in a number of ways: call a vote to force conservative Democrats to stand up publicly with Republicans and Big Insurance to filibuster health care, strip them of their committee chairmanships or committee seats, or opt to pass health care through what's called the "reconciliation" process, which would let him pass the bill with a simple majority vote.
Sen. Reid has shown us in the past that he's willing to fight for the public option. And in this final showdown, we all need to stand stronger than ever. Sen. Reid needs to hear that, at this crucial time, we've got his back.
Can you sign the petition to Harry Reid today? Clicking here will add your name:

Volunteer - Arlington West in Hungtington Beach
This coming weekend, on Sunday December 6th,
we hope to have our December 2009 installation of the Arlington
West Memorial in Huntington Beach.
Presently the weather is expected to be overcast with a high of 61 and a 20%
chance of rain. We have weathered the weather before, and will probably setup
regardless, but will keep an eye on it and try to notify everyone if plans
change.
The Occupation of Iraq continues. We are seeing record
casualties in Afghanistan.
And have had another force escalation announced for Afghanistan
inspite of warnings against it from broad swathes of knowledgeable sources and
parties. As Afghanistan
builds up faster than forces are removed from Iraq, we
have more troops deployed in Iraq
and Afghanistan
combined than ever before.
We need to remind the public of the continuing conflicts and
sacrifices, as well as being there for service members and families in need of
help.
Weather forecast:
The present forecast is for a high of 61 under
probably overcast skies.
We remain as dedicated as ever to doing what we can to
keep the costs of these conflicts in front of the public, to continue this
display, forum and venue, and to promote the cause of peace, while
honoring those that serve and particularly those that have been sacrificed. We
do this while also fighting for full and proper benefits and care for our
returning and past veterans. We cannot let the public forget that
many of our nation's sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and even
fathers and mothers, are still daily struggling and risking life half a world
away.
Please consider helping, or at least visiting, as we again setup our memorial on
the sands of Huntington Beach to give thanks to and to honor those who
have served our country and particularly those that made the ultimate
sacrifice. We must continue to remind the public of this ongoing conflicts and
their costs to our nation and its families, and also to continue to talk
to, support and help the many Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Veterans, family
members and concerned others that come by.
Volunteers are needed and guests are
always very much welcome.
As usual we will be at 6th
Street (north of pier and of Main
Street) Huntington Beach
on the beach. Display should be up from 8 to about 4PM. Please come visit and, if you can, PLEASE come to
help with setup and/or breakdown. In addition to the moving display and great
people and the beach itself, we will have a good selection of peace supplies
for small (or better large :-) donations. We often have many great people
visiting and great conversations going on.
I need to know that we have enough veteran members willing to staff it all day
and enough help and transport to get it setup and taken down. If you can help,
please respond to this email (arncomp@pacbell. net) as soon as you can
confirm your plans for Sunday.
It is important that we hear from veteran members soon
to know what coverage we will have for the day. Please let us know what
hours you can expect to be present.
Volunteers:
Please remember to change your clocks Saturday night.
We usually need the most help and transport in the morning, though both morning
and evening are critical.
We meetup at the storage unit, Mini-U-Stor, at 7611
Talbert Ave. HB (that's n/west of Beach
Blvd. between Beach and Gothard) at 7AM. We can use some additional transport help
and lots of helping hands. We get to the beach around/after 7:30 and start the setup of the field of
crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 40
minutes or over two hours. Take down goes much quicker than setup (at
least for the beach portion). With a 5PM
sunset, we will be on winter schedule with breakdown starting about 4PM and hopefully have everything back in the
storage unit by 5:00. Evening
transport help going back to storage is also an area of need.
Hope to see you there,

In 1996, Berty Segal Cook was invited by
the Inuit of Barrow, Alaska to design a
program that would train their teachers
in strategies to develop, maintain, preserve,
and revitalize their Native language. At that
time their Native language was in danger of dying
out. This began a series of trainings with
14 different tribes of First Nation People in
Canada and indigenous peoples in the
United States. Between 2007 and 2008,
Berty worked with the Canadian Inuit. These
teachers came from nine different islands along
the Northern coast of Canada.
In this presentation, Berty will show a slide
presentation describing this recent experience
working with the Inuit of Northern Canada. The
goal again was to train them to preserve their
Native languages. She will share what she
learned about the culture and values of these
highly intelligent, advanced peoples.
Berty, is rated one of the top ESL/Foreign
language teacher trainers in the nation. She
has trained teachers across the United States and
in 20 other countries. She has worked with 15
different bands (tribes) of indigenous peoples
across Canada, Guam, and the U.S. Her book,
"Teaching English Through Action," has been
translated into a number of languages, including
12 native languages.

During the past few years, several
municipalities here in Orange County
have passed city ordinances which make
it a misdemeanor criminal offense for
day laborers, mostly of Mexican ancestry,
to congregate on public sidewalks for
the purpose of seeking work. Many of
these ordinances not only have violated
state and federal constitutional
guarantees of free speech and assembly,
but specifically zero-in on the activities
of day laborers and make them targets
of intense police repression.
Members of the Colectivo Tonantzin, an
Orange County-based grassroots
organization that defends the rights
of undocumented workers from harassment
and abuse by police and the Minutemen,
will deliver a presentation on their
efforts to fight these city ordinances
in Costa Mesa, Orange, and elsewhere.
Come to this meeting to learn more
about: how these racist and discriminatory
city ordinances are used to criminalize
efforts by day laborers to seek work; which
local politicians are behind them; and what
you personally can do to fight them.

The Interfaith Peace Ministry of OC meets on the second Monday of each month at 12:15PM at the Sisters of St. Joseph in Orange ( 480 S. Batavia, Orange CA 92868)
For the November 9th meeting we are most privileged to have speaking on the current state of human rights in Iran, the very engaging, informed, informative, intelligent and articulate Sunny Zia. Sunny Zia is a native of Iran and holds a master's degree from UCI. She is very much an activist and remains as engaged, as is possible from Southern California, in the fight for freedom, democracy and human rights for the people of her homeland. She represents the organization "Humanity Unites" within the Iran Supporters Network.
Freedom and rights under the rule of the ayatollahs has always been problematic, but the protests over the apparently fraudulent election results this year and the bloody and brutal repression that resulted briefly made this more visible to the rest of the world. That is, until the regime managed to lockdown virtually all communication with the outside world, especially internet access and other networks capable of transmitting photos and videos.
Ms. Zia is perhaps the most knowledgeable speaker on this subject in Orange County, so don't miss this opportunity.
Iran Supporters Network is a non-partisan, non-political, non-sectarian civic network of individuals committed to uniting the Iranian American community and the community at large in advocating human rights and freedom for people in Iran. Affiliations of the individuals of the network include University of California Irvine Center for Citizen Peace Building, Humanity Unites, Network of Iranian Professionals of Orange County, United For Iran, and Society for Democracy in Iran

Leslie Allenby, a criminal defense attorney in
the public practice who represents clients
charged with serious felony or drug offenses,
will deliver a presentation on "The Tax, Regulate,
and Control Cannabis Act of 2010," an initiative
still in the signature gathering phase, which,
if it makes it to the ballot next November, will
give California voters a chance to "repeal state
laws that make it a crime for people 21 years
old or older to use, possess, sell, cultivate, or
transport marijuana or industrial hemp."
According to the California State Legislative
Analysts Office, passage of this initiative "could
result in a major reduction in state and local
costs for enforcement of marijuana-related
offenses and the handling of related criminal
cases in the court system" and bring "significant
savings to state and local governments,
potentially in the several tens of millions of
dollars annually, by reducing the number of
marijuana offenders incarcerated in state prisons
and county jails."
Come to Allenby's presentation to find out more
about the many positive benefits "The Tax, Regulate,

upon millions of Californians and learn what
you personally can do to help ensure this
initiative ends up on the ballot in the November

Have an enjoyable Halloween and remember to change your clocks Saturday night.
This coming weekend, on Sunday November 1st, we hope to have our November 2009 installation of the Arlington West Memorial in Huntington Beach. Presently the weather is expected to warm to highs of 77 on Sunday, and I hope that means fewer winds and more beach goers, or beach trail travellers.
The Occupation of Iraq continues and we are seeing record casualties in Afghanistan even before the requested force buildup, as the government appears to struggle with goals and strategy there. Combined we have more troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan than ever before.
We need to remind the public of the continuing conflicts and sacrifices, as well as being there for service members and families in need of help.
Weather forecast:
The present forecast is for a high of 77 under clear sunny skies. A great beach day with mid 80's inland.
We remain as dedicated as ever to doing what we can to keep the costs of these conflicts in front of the public, to continue this display, forum and venue, and to promote the cause of peace, while honoring those that serve and particularly those that have been sacrificed. In February 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger used
the power of his office to declare that California
was going through a "statewide drought emergency,"
urging local municipalities to cut their use of
water as much as 20 percent and streamlining
the state's regulatory approval process for any
projects related to drought relief or increasing water
supply, such as desalination and water recycling
plants.
Here in Orange County, Poseidon Resources, a large
multinational corporation whose headquarters are based
in Stamford, Connecticut, is currently in the
process of securing the final permits from state and
local agencies to construct a $300 million
desalination plant in Huntington Beach. This
controversial project has been touted by proponents
as one way of addressing the state's "water crisis."
But does it really?
Joe Geever, California Policy Coordinator for
the Surfrider Foundation, will do a presentation
on the problems of desalination, pointing out
the huge energy costs and adverse environmental
impacts that Poseidon's plant will have upon aquatic
life that live along the coast. He'll argue desalination
plants are wholly unnecessary and that the state's
"water crisis" is largely due to gross mismanagement of
this vital public resource.
Geever will be also be joined by John Scott, a member
of Residents for Responsible Desalination, and John
Earl, Editor and Publisher of ocvoice.com, both of
whom will address further issues pertaining to desalination,
including the taxpayer subsidies Poseidon wants to
build its plant to the threat this scheme -- an attempt
by a corporation to "privatize" a public resource -- poses to
the basic concept that water is a fundamental human right
that should be owned and managed by the public.

Thank Senators Boxer and Feinstein for standing up for the public option!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I just signed a letter to Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein from the Courage Campaign thanking them for their strong public statement supporting a public option that will provide health care coverage to millions of Americans.
As the Senate prepares to finalize their version of health care reform, including the Baucus bill that lacks a strong public option, we need to ensure that our Senators will continue to act on their support for real health care reform that will keep the insurance companies honest by showing them we support them when they do the right thing.
Will you join me in signing this short thank you letter to Sen. Feinstein? Here's the link. Once you click it, it only takes a few seconds to add your name:

"LOVE MAKES A FAMILY" TOURING PHOTO/TEXT EXHIBIT DEBUTS AT UNITARIAN
UNIVERSALIST CHURCH IN ANAHEIM ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8TH
At a time in history when LGBT people continue to fight for basic human rights
including the right to legally marry, the right to lead a Boy Scout troop, and
the right to be adoptive and foster parents, "Love Makes a Family: Portraits of
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and their Families," cuts through
all the political arguments right to the heart of the issue by showing the love,
caring, and connection that are so basic to all families.
Photographs by Gigi Kaeser depict a variety of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender people and their families of all races in familiar family settings.
The photos are accompanied by text edited by Peggy Gillespie from in-depth
interviews she conducted with each family member — including children like
Liza — who speak candidly about their lives, their relationships, and the ways
in which they cope with the realities of prejudice, bias, and intolerance on a
day-to-day basis.
By allowing viewers to come face-to-face with LGBT people, "Love Makes a Family"
makes visible in a positive way, the love and caring in these families. This
exhibit contributes to the process of dismantling the destructive power of
prejudice and intolerance, thus making the world a safer place for all people.
"Love Makes a Family," created by the award-winning Family Diversity Projects
(www.familydiv.org) of Amherst, Massachusetts, will make its debut at the
Unitarian Universalist Church in Anaheim starting on Thursday, October 8th. This
exhibit will be open to the general public Thursdays from Noon - 5:30 p.m., and
Sundays from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and Noon - 1:00 p.m. until Thursday,
November 5th. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

SINGLE-PAYER MARCH & RALLY
==========================
Healthcare for People, Not Profits! Expand Healthcare, Not Warfare!
Monday, September 14th
6:00-8:00 p.m.
Gather at Main & 4th Streets in Downtown Santa Ana
(We will be marching to the Federal Building)
NO ON H.R. 3200! NOT ONE MORE BAILOUT!
H.R. 3200 is the worst of all possible worlds for consumers and taxpayers. It
creates a mandate to purchase taxpayer-subsidized health insurance plans that
offer limited benefits and have high out-of-pocket expenses. It grants a huge
windfall (aka bailout) to private health insurance companies, while still
leaving millions of people at financial and health risk.
The so-called "public option" will do nothing to alter this scheme. We will
still have a dysfunctional health care system organized around private health
insurance companies. "Public option" will give these corporations a strong
incentive to dump their sickest (and costliest) patients on the backs of
taxpayers in order to make more money. Millions will still be left under- or
uninsured and those who can afford it—even if they are eligible for taxpayer
subsidies—may end up paying higher premiums and deductibles and get less
healthcare in return.
If anything, the "debate" over "public option" has channeled peoples’ energy
away from joining together and fighting for a plan that has a proven track
record of bringing about real change: single payer healthcare!
EXPANDING "MEDICARE-FOR-ALL" IS THE REAL PUBLIC OPTION
Single-payer healthcare (aka "Medicare-for-All") is the real public option for
the American people. It would save more than $400 billion per year nationwide in
healthcare costs: enough to provide comprehensive, high-quality coverage for
all. But President Barack Obama and Democratic Party politicians deliberately
kept it off the table because their election campaigns were largely funded in
record amounts by the multi-billion dollar insurance, pharmaceutical and
for-profit health services industries who stand to make hundreds of billions in
profit from H.R. 3200.
With single-payer healthcare, patients will regain choice. For ordinary
Americans’ health and pocket books it means hospitals and doctors will have
more time and money to spend on care rather than on complicated insurance
billing schemes. And most of all, for the silent majority of Americans and
American doctors, every man, woman, and child will be covered for all medically
necessary services such as prescription drugs and medical supplies, hospital and
doctor, including dental and vision, preventative and emergency, and mental and
reproductive health care.
