A great site for Croatian lyrics is: http://www.crolinks.com/cromusic/
I know that "Oprosti mi, Pape" is on there and they have a good
collection of old and new songs.

Croatian mines replaced by wines

Some of the best-known vineyards in Croatia have reopened after being
cleared of mines left over from the war of the early 1990s.

The former leader of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, owned a villa among
the vines, which was used as a base by the notorious Serbian war
criminal, Arkan.

The Ilok vineyards by the Danube river, overlooking Serbia, lie near
Vukovar, where bitter fighting took place.

The vineyards are already producing wines, including the famous
Traminac.

The area is full of history. Marshal Tito used his villa as a base
for hunting expeditions and as a refuge from the pressures of running
Yugoslavia.

During the break-up of that country in the early 1990s the town of
Vukovar became a battlefield. More than 1,000 Croats were killed and
dumped in mass graves.

Landmines were laid by both sides. The Serbian paramilitary group
known as Arkan's Tigers used Tito's villa as their headquarters for
raids into Bosnia. When they left they scattered more mines
throughout the area and dynamited the villa.

The building still lies in ruins, but now, all these years later, the
mines have at last been cleared.

At a ceremony to mark the achievement, US ambassador Bob Bradtke said
Croatia had "inherited a terrible problem of mines, so in order to
put this land back into productive use it's very important to get the
mines out".

He praised the "really wonderful Croatian wine, Traminac, Sylvana,
Grasavina".

It will take around three years before the last areas to be cleared
of mines produce grapes that can be used for the region's famous
white wines.

Traminac has been made since 1710, and was served at the coronation
of Queen Elizabeth II.

Despite the blood that was shed in this area just over a decade ago,
Serbian workers now cross the Danube to work alongside Croatians in
the vineyards.

The Importance of the Eucharist
Apologetics Book 1

OCTOBER 7, 2006

Guest Speaker: Sister Consuelo Alcala

"Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a
reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence..." St.
Peter (I Peter 3:15-16)

In the original Greek text, the word used by St Peter is apologia,
which means to explain or provide a rational defense for something.
It is where we get our word "apologetics." The Apologetics focus
mainly on the biblical evidence for Catholic beliefs and practice.

You are invited to attend the first in the series of enlightening and
inspiring presentations that will strengthen your believe and teach
you to be knowledgeable about such topics as: Mary; Statues and
Relics; Purgatory; the Papacy and Church Authority; Tradition and the
Bible; Faith and Works; Baptism; Confession; The Holy Eucharist;
Marriage and Divorce; the Priesthood and much more.

We look forward to sharing this special day with you!
Schedule:

1:00 - 3:00 P.M. Sister Consuelo Alcala

Pristine Water, Castles & Cheap Price
Lure Grown-Up Set: Why Croatia Is 'It'

By Joe Volz , AARP

With its picturesque cities, pristine rocky coastline, and 1,200
islands in crystal blue water offering a variety of activities at
bargain prices, Croatia is the perfect destination for grandparents
traveling with grandchildren. It is beautiful, crammed with history
and nature, and cheap. As an added bonus, the people are friendly and
welcoming. Lonely Planet staffers selected Croatia as their top
destination in 2005.

Geography and Culture
By European standards, Croatia is a medium-sized country. Its
crescent shape borders the Adriatic Sea, Central Europe, and the
Balkans. At its widest point, Croatia is a few hundred miles wide.
Its mainland territory is split into two non-contiguous parts by the
short coastline of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Croatia's capital, Zagreb, is the country's cultural center and its
largest city. The majority of the 4.7 million inhabitants are Croats
who speak Croatian, a South Slavic language that uses the Latin
alphabet. The dominant religion is Roman Catholicism.

Carved out of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia has been a parliamentary
democracy since 2000 and has applied for European Union membership.
The currency is the kuna.

History
The Adriatic Sea was an ancient trade route between Europe and the
East. The sea and land in this area have been a bloody crossroads for
centuries, the scene of commerce and fierce fighting between waves of
ancient Greeks, Romans, Turks, Hungarians, Slavs, and Venetians,
among others. Shipwrecks litter the Adriatic floor, enticing divers.

Between 1990 and 1995, Croatia experienced a bitter civil war between
Croatian and Serb forces as the former Republic of Yugoslavia broke
apart into its constituent ethnic pieces. Most of the tourist areas
in Croatia have been re-created following this tumultuous time, and
tourism is increasing. The U.S. State Department rates Croatia as
safe, although some remote areas remain littered with landmines.

Dubrovnik
Rising from the sea, centuries-old Dubrovnik is touted by many as the
most beautiful city in Europe. On the Dalmatian coast, in the center
of Croatia's Adriatic coast, Dubrovnik was a neutral city-state for
centuries. It suffered severe damage during the civil war in the
1990s but has been largely restored to its original grandeur. The sun-
drenched city's white limestone buildings are topped with rosy
terracotta tiles to spectacular effect.

Spend a couple of days exploring the old part of the town Stari Grad.
Straight out of a fairy tale picture book, Stari Grad is a mixture of
perfectly preserved medieval and Renaissance houses, convents,
museums, churches, palaces, and fountains all cut from the same light-
colored stone. Outdoor cafes in gleaming marble-paved squares are an
invitation to linger after scrambling up steep cobbled streets.

Dubrovnik is famous for its impressive city walls. Built between the
13th and 16th centuries, these walls are 82 feet high and contain 16
towers. A walk along the walls provides a stunning view of the town
and a blue sea crisscrossed with boats of all sizes and shapes.

For something different, try a day sail from the Dubrovnik marine
harbor, built between a 16th century castle and a monastery. A short
cruise ends at Mljet Island, where there is a choice of restaurants
and places to rent bikes. Cycling is a different experience when it
takes you past fields of gray-green olive trees, vineyards, and ruins
from the time of the Romans and the Illyrians (an ancient people in
Croatia).

Hvar
If you are traveling with youngsters, you might want to stay on one
of the islands for a few days to intersperse seeing historic sites
with beach and snorkeling time. Fortunately, island hopping is easy,
as ferries serve most major towns and islands in the Adriatic. The
larger, but slower, car ferries take bicycles, motorcycles, and
kayaks.

Hvar Island, one of the southernmost Croatian islands, is 42 miles
long and two to six miles wide. It is pine-covered, mountainous, and
scented with the bluish-purple wild lavender that covers its slopes.
It is also one of the sunniest spots in Europe. Because of the
abundant sunshine and the purity of the sea, this medieval town is
one of the prime resorts in Croatia.

History lessons evolve naturally and without too much effort when
your rambles take you from a 15th-century Franciscan monastery to a
16th-century Venetian fortress to a 17th-century theater. After
leisurely suppers of fresh produce, daily-caught fish, or spit-
roasted lamb as well as homemade red wine with water walk along the
shore to the 13th-century central plaza and the waterfront promenade.
You'll pass gray and white stone houses on streets with no names. Why
do the streets have no street signs, you may ask? The locals consider
them unnecessary, since they know where everyone lives!

Scented Souvenirs
Although there are excellent bargains to be had in leather goods,
local hand-made lace and embroidery, arts and crafts, and ceramics,
particularly special souvenirs from Hvar are small linen sachets
filled with local lavender that emit a pungent perfume. The sachet
labels written in four languages read "The Scent of the Adriatic
Island of Hvar...the world's greatest quality of lavender...Come to
Croatia and enjoy the beauty and ambience of the Adriatic Islands."

Getting There
There are no direct flights to Croatia from the United States.
Connecting flights from the New York area to Zagreb can be booked
through most major European cities. Compared with London or Paris,
hotel rooms in Croatia are very reasonably priced, even during the
high season of July and August.

For something different, try a day sail from the Dubrovnik marine
harbor, built between a 16th century castle and a monastery. A short
cruise ends at Mljet Island, where there is a choice of restaurants
and places to rent bikes. Cycling is a different experience when it
takes you past fields of gray-green olive trees, vineyards, and ruins
from the time of the Romans and the Illyrians (an ancient people in
Croatia).

Hi everyone!

It has been a while since I posted a message, so I thought this info.
may interest some of you or your friends or relatives. An online dating
site has just been launched exclusively for single Croatians worldwide
interested in finding their soulmate. It is at www.croatiandating.com.
I think it is a much needed service and although new, looks very
promising.
