Thanks Jess for showing us some of your beautiful
work! It's fun to see costumes that others have
created!

I am currently in dress rehearsils for Camelot. We
have a cast of 39 actors and over 150 costumes in the
show. It's a big one! The costume shop has been great-
we have built a lot of the costumes and hats for the
production. It's been a busy summer!

Jan
Hi Gregory! Here is the information on sources

It might work. I have never seen this show, so I
am clueless as to what you are trying to do. I think
this may work if I am understanding you correctly.
Sepa is not a fabric but a solution you soak the
fabric in. It is pretty expensive, and it sounds as if
you need a lot. The longer you soak it the stronger
and harder the cloth becomes. However, the longer you
soak it the more solution it takes. There is only one
place i know that sells it. However they just went out
of business. So I don't know where you could get it.
Sorry I couldn't help you more.
Hi Gregory!

Thanks for the information!
Where can I get SEPA? The dress will be a bustle style-
do you think that if I made the bustle and the
petticoat out of this with a soft front for her to step out
of that this whould work?
It has to stand up by
itself for quite a while on stage.

Jan
Hi Gregory!

I know of three places that
you may find helpful. One is called S.A. Feather, and
they supply many of the feathers for Martigras. I
believe they are in PA. There is Mangrove Feather in New
York, New York I believe. They tend to price things by
what they think you can pay, so say that your budget
is small. The last one is Zuker Feather in MO. I
believe. They tend to be the cheapest in my experience,
but the quality varries a bit- I got a boa from there
once that shed like crazy! I have phone numbers at
work and will get them for you.

Jan
I am designing very fancy costumes for a show and
they require a lot of feathers. Does anyone know of a
place to get feathers of all shapes and colors. I need
a lot so I am looking for a place that has low
prices and lots of discounts because I don't have a
large budget. Any response would be greatly
appreciated. Thank You.
Jan- all you have to do is use a lot of starch.
Or you can use a material
called SEPA. That is what I use when I want dresses to stick out.
What a lucky girl your daughter is! The costume sounds wonderful. Is this
going to be her Halloween costume, or are there other plans for it?

Jan
I'm currently recreating the white parade costume
worn by Queen Amidala at the end of Phantom Menace for
my 9 year old daughter. I made the brow tiara from
beads and crystals and am now beading the fan worn on
the back of the cape. The fan is going to be quite a
bit heavier than I expected and I may have to come up
with a sturdier way to attach it to the petaled cape,
but it's going well so far.
Hi everyone!

I will be designing a
production of Sunday in the Park with George this fall and
wondered if you had any information or ideas on how to
make Dots dress stand up by itself when she steps out
of it.

Jan
iya and I am sorry to hear we have another
person affected with the malady (costuming).

The
best books I have found that match your description
are:

The Cut of Men's Clothing by Nora Waugh;

The
Cust of Women's Clothing by Nora Waugh.

Both
have good historical notes as well as copies of actual
garments.

Also consider Janet Arnold's Paterns of Fashion and
Patterns for Theatrical Costumes by Holkerboer (spelling
may be off there).

-C.
i!
I am soon to be a costume design student
at Indiana University, but I've been doing research
into costuming for some time and love it!

Does
anyone know of a good book that has many miniaturized
patterns that can be blown up? I've found a few patterns
here and there, I guess I'm looking for a miniaturized
"Costumer's Bible". Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. Any and all time periods welcome, I'm trying to
build my resources.

Thanks!!!
Beth
just joined this club. I posted a few of my costumes and hats. Let me know what
you think.

Anyone else have photos to post?

-The Mad Hatter
an call called Midland Plastics. You can looke
up their address on the internet. They sell rods by
the yard. About $3.00/yard. There are two types of
rod, plastic and solid. Both work great. And modern
actors and actresses don't mind wearing that!!

'm Jessica Ralenkotter and I am currently
attending The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and a
costume designer/constructor. Which is very exiting. It
is a three year program. I am currently designing
Once Upon a Mattress, and building Prom

lastic Rods.. I know it sounds funny.. but they
work great!! If you make them a casing.. and then feed
the plastic rod and then to connect the two ends use
medal tubing and fit both ends into it!! WORKS GREAT
for almost any understructure!

Jessica
am designing some costumes and I was wondering what is a good price for boning
for hoop skirts. Or could you recommend a better material to achieve the
poofiness?
am a multiple personality! I was a professional
dancer for five years. During that time I learned about
feathers and rhinestoning. I am trained as a tailor,
design and sew costumes for schools, theatres, and
anyone that asks. I have done work for ringmasters. I
can sew wedding dresses too. My wife and I used to
have a fabric shop so I can get information on
fabrics, trims, and whatever else you may need. I have
contacts in Las Vegas. I will gladly help as much as I can
anyone that needs any information. My day job is a
bricklayer!
hy dosen't anyone talk in here. We should
introduce ourselves. I will start:
I am a costume
designer and I design and sew costumes for local theatre
groups. I am a young man from Pennsylvania. I am also a
musician that plays in Symphony Orchestras and in
musicals. So that is basically me. If you have any
questions, just ask. Now it is your turn.
