Michel Valdez is coming to Denver to remind us how ridiculous elementary school can be. This zinester from LA will be reading from School Daze, a zine about his experiences as a teacher's assistant. In it, he describes not only what he teaches the students but also what he's learned: "You haven't lived until you've been stabbed repeatedly in the leg with a number two pencil."

And... breaking into the local zine scene, support Denver zinesters Anna Inazu (behind wire fences), Shannon Perez-Darby (From Here To There And Back Again...) and Andie Lyons (Already Too Much; Never Enough). Also reading is veteran zinester, Kelly Shortandqueer (Shortandqueer).

Please excuse cross-posting, but please do pass this on to whomever you
feel would be interested:

Are you a zinester librarian? Do you make a zine about your life as a
librarian, about your library or about what you do when you are not
busy daydreaming about Dewey?

I am in the process of creating a fully cataloged zine collection at
the School of Library and Information Studies Library at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison that is entirely devoted to works by, for and
about library workers and libraries. This collection will work to share
information by and about librarians and library workers for the
students of our library school and with the greater library community.

Please send a brief description of your zine as well as ordering
information to: aasellie@....

Also, if you are aware of any titles that you do not create but that I
might want to add to this collection, please get in touch as well.

Thanks so much!

Thanks for creating this group to honor zine culture in Denver.
Thanks to Stevyn and Kelly of Ironfeather for putting on such an
inspiring event. And thanks to those that attended my documentary
filmmaking workshop at the zinefest. These days, video can be another
form of zine. If anyone would like help or guidance making a film
please let me know and I will help however I can.

Hey everyone!

San Francisco Zine Fest WILL be taking place in 2006
(Sept. 9th + 10th, to be precise)!

After a short spell of uncertainty, the SFZF is back
at CELLspace (2050 Bryant St, in the Mission). This
year's show promises to be a lot of fun, with
workshops, film and animation screenings, and of
course dozens of local artists with everything from
zines and mini-comics to hand-made apparel and prints.
As always, admission will be FREE!

Table space is now available for zine-makers,
cartoonists, and all manner of crafty folk. Sell,
trade, and otherwise share your work with nearly 1000
attendees and your fellow creators. Full tables (8
feet) are only $40 if you sign up before August 19th .
Half tables (4 feet) are $25 all the way up until the
date of the Festival (unfortunately, we had to
increase our table fees because CELLspace's rental
rate went up 25% since last year! However, we are
confident that we will be able to get more attendees
at the show this year and make it fun and successful
for all). We would really love to see each and every
one of you back this year. Due to the limited amount
of time before the Festival, it is very important that
you sign up soon... visit http://www.sfzinefest.com
and fill out our handy registration form tout suite!
Thank you so much for your support!

SFZF 2006 is brought to you by the hard-working folks
at King-Cat Comics (John Porcellino), Pineapple Venetti zine (Misun
Oh) and Family Style zine (Jonas Madden-Connor, François Vigneault,
& Sarah Gion). Many thanks to Calvin Liu, who headed up SFZF 2005,
and Jennifer Starfiend, who started the whole thing. All questions
can be e-mailed to
sfzinefest@... (just like always)!

Yours truly,

the SFZF 2006 Crew

Hello friends!

Just wanted to share some of the fun upcoming events with the Denver
Zine Library that you won't want to miss. And give you some updates
of what we've been up to lately.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

* 2007 Denver Zine Calendar Release Party! *
Watercourse Foods (206 E. 13th Ave.)
7 pm - 11 pm

The Denver Zine Library has just published the 2007 Denver Zine
Calendar, which features 16 local zine writers' illustrations and
artwork . We will release the calendar and hold a silent auction to
raise money for our all-volunteer run library.

Please come and support the Denver Zine Library and get your very
own copy of this amazing calendar for just $10! Also, check out our
awesome silent auction of art, services and gift certificates!

The artists: Molly Zackary, Celso, Anna, Kevin, Kelly Shortandqueer,
Kristy Fenton, Jason Heller, Misun Oh, John Porcellino, Amelia
Crewe, Brian Leech, Oren Kyle Cantrell, Dylan Scholinski, Andie
Lyons, Shannon Perez-Darby, Jaks, Eleanor, and Patty.

Please pass on this invitation to everyone you know!

* Upcoming Fancy Tiger class *
Make a zine! - $10

Learn how to make a zine! This class is for people who aren't
really sure what a zine is as well as veteran zinesters looking for
new ideas. Taught by a Denver Zine Librarian, you will hear about
the history of zines and the local zine community, see several
options for zine layouts, and learn the mechanics of assembling a
zine. Come with some creative ideas and leave with a starter zine.
Class fee includes all materials. For more information about zines
in Denver, check out http://www.denverzinelibrary.org

1 – 2 hour class
Saturday, November 11th 4:30-6:30
At Fancy Tiger, 1 South Broadway
http://fancytiger.com/

PREVIOUS EVENTS:

* Fancy Tiger class *

On October 14th, the Denver Zine Library taught their first zine
class at Fancy Tiger. Although we had originally hoped for more than
two people, this intimate class was perfect to help the students get
some ideas for a specific project they're working on together.
Denver, keep your eyes open for a new zine about being a single
mother! We look forward to working with more zine novices and even
veterans at our next class, Saturday 11/11!

* Other zine workshops *

The Denver Zine Library went to two sections of an Introduction to
Women's Studies at Auraria to explain what zines are and the many
ways they can look. Students in both sections got excited about
their class assignment once they saw how much flexibility can be
found in making zines. We hope to get some finished copies donated
to the Denver Zine Library. Thanks to Arlene Sgoutas for
introducting so many folks to zines!

* Pedal Powered Bike Tour *

Along with several other organizations, the Denver Zine Library
hosted a screening of several films as part of the Pedal Powered
Movie Tour. About 40 people came to watch short films addressing the
US-Mexico border. Filmmaker Bill Brown biked from Washington DC to
Boulder to screen the films.

For more information on the tour and descriptions of the films,
check out the website: http://homepage.mac.com/r.maisano/bb/index.htm

DENVER ZINE LIBRARY WISHLIST:

OTHER LOCAL PROJECTS:

Hi, this is Weston of Junktown zine. My girlfriend, Lynne, and I are planning on
putting together a sorta' McSweeny's-style short fiction zine (or literary
review if you want to make legit). We're looking for short stories from Denver,
or maybe just Colorado, based writers for the first issue. In the future, we'll
include writers from elsewhere and maybe have "themes" and whatnot, but for this
first one, it just has to be fiction and you just have to be from Colorado.

"Pick Up the Mic"
Director: Alex Hinton [95 Mins]
www.pickupthemic.com

Director Alex Hinton's moving portrayal of the emerging glbt hip
hop, or `homohop,' movement showcases the growing genre and profiles
many of the top queer hip hop artists who are creating this raw, new
body of music. The film chronicles an amazing and unapologetic
underground music movement, and the queer-identified
singers/rappers/hip hoppers who are speaking out through their
performance art – about their lives, their loves, and the homophobic
music culture that surrounds us. We are treated to explosive clips
of their live performances and behind the scene interviews, and see
just how queer hip-hop defies the music industry's most homophobic
genre.

Meet Juba Kalamka, the co-founder of the Deep Dickollective and
Sugartruck Releasing, one of a number of new homohop recording
labels. Learn Katastrophe's personal journey as a transman and
spoken word artist; why Paradigm doesn't think she'll be invited to
perform at the Dinah Shore Golf Classic; or why Johnny Dangerous
will definitely never be invited to perform with Deadlee in most
public settings! As Tim'm, co-founder of the Deep Dickollective
says, "we have to make the music that we want to listen to, because
it's not what we hear in the clubs."

The film includes more from talents like Dutch Boy – creator of the
first homohop online community, Rainbow Flava, JenRo, Marcus Rene
Van, Tina G, and QBoy.

You'll be clamoring for more as the film comes to an end.

BUT WAIT! There IS more…

Join Bent Lens Cinema and Friends after the film for

*** LIVE *** performances from several of the top homohop talents

===============================================

SISTER SPIT

Do you love Michelle Tea? Do you love queer women writers? Do you love hot touring queers? Then you'll love Sister Spit. Sister Spit is making an oh so very exciting stop in Denver!!!

When: Tuesday April 17th
Time: Doors at 7:00 show at 7:30
Where: St. Cajetan's on the Auraria Campus (for a location map go to
http://www.mscd.edu/enroll/admissions/campus/map/ )
How much: $10 donation at the door (no one turned away for lack of funds)

Sister Spit: The Next Generation is a national tour pairing five brand-new, twenty-something queer female/ish writers with original Sister Spit roadsters and award-winning writers Ali Liebegott and Michelle Tea. Based on the orginal Sister Spit Ramblin' Roadshow of the late 90s, Sister Spit: The Next Generation hits the road in Fall 2006, nearly a decade after the first Spit van set sail, reviving the rowdy, raucous literary adventure with a mixture of fresh faces and seasoned roaddogs!

WHO'S IN THE VAN?

Writer, performer and literary event wrangler MICHELLE TEA will MC the evening's festivities as well as read an excerpt from her recently published first novel, Rose of No Man's Land. Michelle is co-founder of the original Sister Spit experience, which began as an all-girl open mic in the early 90s and morphed into a national tour which dragged Eileen Myles, Beth Lisick, Katastrophe and countless others across the country at the end of the decade. She is the author of four memoirs, including the award-winning Valencia and the illustrated Rent Girl. Michelle has edited three anthologies, most recently Baby, Remember My Name: New Queer Girl Writings. Joining Michelle Tea is veteran EILEEN MYLES, who has written thousands of poems since she gave her first reading at CBGB's in 1974.

Plucked from the pages of the anthology Baby, Remember My Name: New Queer Girl Writings are~writer and future progressive librarian RHIANNON ARGO, who cites good ole fashioned ladies room gossip as a prime literary inspiration; 25-year old filipina jewish whitegirl TAMARA LLOSA-SANDOR, who, when not writing, enjoys a bowl of ramen while listening to Kiss Double Platinum, NICOLE J. GEORGES, who is an illustrator, pet portrait maker, and author of Invincible Summer Zine, illustrator, publisher and writer CRISTY C. ROAD, who, at the tender age of 23 has been producing her zine for over 10 years, recently published an illustrated novel, Indestructible, and churned out countless illustrations for punk bands, political orgainizations and magazines such as Bitch and Jane; writer, actor, and karaoke master Robin Akimbo. And reading from her newly published second novel, The IHOP Papers (Carrol and Graf), about a young lesbian pancake waitress, ALI LIEBEGOTT. A writer, illustrator and visual artist, Ali's first book, the epic road poem The Beautifully Worthless, was awarded a Lambda Literary Award for Debut
Fiction. Ali was a member of Sister Spit's 1997 maiden voyage, as well as the 1999 final national tour, wherein she delighted both audiences and tourmates with her fatigueless humor and ability to smash beer cans with her breasts.

  • Sent (a) Mental : A Memorial to GLBTIQ Suicides
    Call for submissions

I am not a stranger to the issues brought up here. Unfortunately, I have lost many people to suicide over the years - and it is with this inspiration that I launch a new project. The Sent (a) Mental Memorial Project -- and as The Names Project (The Aids Quilt) or the National Organization of Womens' Clothesline Project which documents violence against women -- the Sent (a) Mental Project hopes to bring visibility to mental health issues and much needed attention to the thousands of people lost within our community over the years due to a lack of dialogue around these issues. This is an invitation to send stories and pictures to be included in this project about anyone else that comes to mind or lives in your heart.

In addition to pieces about those who have successfully committed suicide, I am including another section for survivor stories. I want to hear about and from GLBTIQ people who have survived attempts as well as from those who have loved us. I feel it is important for all of us to be represented and heard. The silence around these issues is killing us. If this project can save just one life that will be good enough, but I believe we have the power to save many. It is up to us - because from where I sit - nobody else is doing it.

I welcome a variety of expressions. Examples might include: painting, drawings, poetry, stories, photos, music, or even just a name and dates. Please, send me anything you would like in whatever form you find easiest to express yourself in.

I will be organizing showings, putting together zines of contributions, and hope to eventually set up a website. If you would like to help with any part of this project please let me know.

    The Submission Guidelines Are Easy:

    Size: Postcards,Cds, or up to 8 1/2 " x 11" Paper
(could be multiple pages and /or larger sizes if cleared first to insure proper storage)

    Medium: Open

    First Deadline: August 10th, 2007

Other information that should be included with your submissions:

For my records I will need your contact information. Please specify if you want your info posted so others may contact you. I will also need a name of who the submission is about. I may get more than one submission about each person and I want to show the pieces together. They can still be listed as anonymous if necessary. In addition to names you may include birth/death dates, obituaries, photos, and any other biographical information.

    Send submissions or questions/contact to:

·     A message from fabulous zinester and co-founder of the Denver Zine Library (Vermicious Knid/Jamez)
Hello friends!
As most of you know, I am moving once again.  Next month I will be leaving Alaska (for a while, anyway) and moving to Maine to finish school.
This means that:
	-  my postal address is changing.  I move out of my house in two days, so please don't send  anything else here.  I don't know the new address yet, but mail can always reach me through my mom: 108 Rte 30, Newfane VT 05345.
- my phone number is changing.  The current phone number gets cut off tomorrow.  If you need to reach me in the next week or so (in other words, before the wedding), I can be reached at Julia's parents' house.  E-mail me if you want that number.
- my e-mail is *not* changing.  You can always reach me here, and I check pretty regularly, even when I'm on the road.  (That does not necessarily mean that I will respond quickly - in that regard, I am as bad as ever.)
Once I am settled in Maine, I will write you all again to give you the new info.
	Take care,
	Jamez / Vermicious Knid

·        Also, some folks from the Denver Zine Library (along with some local zinesters) will be traveling to Portland this year for the Portland Zine Symposium. Yay! See you there!

10th AMC:

Our Evolution Beyond Survival: Media Strategies for the Next 10 Years

The 10th annual Allied Media Conference is a milestone for the media
movement. Over the last ten years, we've broken silence and built
movements. We've become the media and created our own communications
tools. Now we want to use this gathering to project ourselves another
ten years into the future.

Amidst the threats we face as individuals and organizations, our
survival is cause for celebration. The AMC provides the opportunity
for us to celebrate and strategize as a community around common
problems: how can we sustain ourselves and our organizations
financially without getting caught up in commercialism or the
nonprofit industry? How will we ensure there are people to do this
work well into the future?

Powerful corporations and unaccountable politicians are advancing
their vision of the future. What kind of future are we working towards
and what role will our media play in shaping it?

Now rooted in Detroit, we continue to look to sustainability
strategies growing from within the current disaster caused by
militarism, systematic oppression, failing schools, and the growing
planetary emergency. That is where we find people, out of necessity,
using media as part of solutions to the problems many more of us will
soon face. The AMC is a laboratory and a showcase for these
innovations.

Since 1999, the AMC has brought together students, journalists,
artists, educators and activists to push the boundaries of
participatory media. We are intergenerational with a focus on youth.
We all share in the teaching and learning of practical skills for
making media and using media to organize for change. This June, we'll
come together to share tactics for living in the world that is and for
shaping the world that we want. Please join us.

Seeking Submissions

Borderlands 2

Just a reminder. There's still time to submit to Borderlands 2! (I know you know somebody who could submit to this. Please forward widely.)

Call for Submissions for Borderlands 2: Tales from Disputed Territories between Races and Cultures

I am currently seeking personal stories and visual art on the theme of FAMILY for the upcoming issue of my compilation zine about mixed-race, bicultural and transracial adoptee identities. Stories should be non-fiction and no more than 800 words. No poetry please. Visual art should be black and white and replicate well in a copy machine (minimal grey tones). Submissions are not due until JUNE 1st, 2008, but please don't wait to start writing! Your stories are valuable, and it's time to bring our often neglected cross-cultural and multi-racial experiences from margin to center by telling our own stories!

Send submissions to oxette@.... Also direct any questions here.
Thanks. -Nia

P.S. Check out the first two issues, titled MXD: True Stories by Mixed-Race Writers and Borderlands: Tales from Disputed Territories between Races and Cultures online at QZAP.org.

Hermana Resist

For the next issue of Hermana, Resist I am accepting submissions. Hermana, Resist is a personal, political zine with literary tendencies which manifest in forms of poetry, free verse, haiku, short stories, journal entries, rants, raves, critiques, commentaries, photos, recipes and dreamy manifestos. I starting writing Hermana, Resist in 2000.

I am looking for submissions that keep in mind what Hermana, Resist is, from folks who know that love is political. The best way to know what it's about is to read a past issue or two.

-Women of color/Chicana/Xicana single mothers-send in your rants, pieces, articles
-WoC/Chicanas-send in your poetry.
-WoC bloggers, zinesters and revolutionary visionaries
-feminist Chicano/Xicanos

-Unsent letters, for example-Dear white guy who asked if I needed a translator before I even spoke
-Interviews with an Hermana.

Send your best work, soulful, compelling, compassionate, angry, original and unforgettable-send your history.

Poets-up to three poems
artists & photographers-send up to 5 images via email. Note that they will probably be published in b/w.

Writers will get a free copy in the issue they're work is used.

This is the first time I'll be printing Hermana, Resist by a printing press! Be part of Hermana, Resist!

Send submissions in Word format or text to noemi.mtz+hr@g m a i l, include your bio, location (nothing specific, for example, El Sur del Valle, Occupied Cali).

I'll also be setting aside a few spaces for ad space to help offset the printing costs. Email me if you'd like info on ad rates.

Allied Media Conference

Click here <http://alliedmediaconference.org/program/fullprogram> for descriptions of 18 workshops, panels and film-screenings that will give you a glimpse of how sweet the AMC will be this year.

This is only about 30% of the conference content so look out for a lot more sweetness in the coming days.

The conference this year features several tracks-- think less "railroad tracks" that would route your interest in a particular direction and more "animal tracks" that end up criss-crossing each
other repeatedly as they travel in unexpected patterns…

Help gear up for the 3rd Annual Denver Zine Fest by joining us for a zine reading & potluck

Who's Reading?

You! We'd love to hear some of your zinester amazing-ness, cause we know you got it! Whether you have been writing zines for years or are in the process of writing your first zine, please come share it with us.

If you are interested in reading, please contact Anna at 303.507.6811 or a.inazu@.... There will be an opportunity to sign up that evening, but we want to have a list of readers who are committed to being there ahead of time.

Food!

This is a potluck. Please bring a vegetarian or vegan dish share.

Come see the zine library!

The zine library will be open for your perusal with over 8,000 zines.  This will also be a great chance to check out our newest space if you haven't seen it already. There is also an amazing mural being painted on the side of the library that you'll just have to see.

Their will be good people, good zines, good food and maybe even some music!

What more could you want?

The next day of course…

We are also still in need of volunteers the day of the zine fest. If you are able to help out or know someone that could, please get in contact with Kelly at shortandqueer@....

Want to know what kind of fabulous workshops you can expect?

All Day Demonstrations In the Zine Table Room:
* Screen printing by Austin with Ink Head
* Old fashioned letter press with Tom Parson

When you enter the venue you will be greeted by a Zine Fest Volunteer who can point you to the WORKSHOP ROOM which will have free workshops throughout the day.

Here is the schedule (subject to change)

10:30 am – 11:00 am: Megan Quinn - How to do a conduct an interview: "I am a reporter for The Golden Transcript, a small newspaper in Golden, CO. I've learned a lot about how to do a smooth, enjoyable interview with cool and interesting people... but not before I had a lot of embarrassing experiences. This workshop offers some tips on how to approach and interview that band, writer, activist, artist, etc for your zine. It also covers what types of questions to ask, how to follow up with people after the interview and how to print the sucker up afterwards (all without feeling like a total idiot.) Comments, suggestions and tips from your personal experiences welcome!"

11:20 am – 12:20 pm: Galen Shoe - Let's make comix: A super friendly workshop where people of all ages and skill levels explore the joy of drawing comix! Come by and participate in various playful activities such as the Scribble Game, the Onomatopoeia Game, Exquisite Corpse, and Jesse Reklaw's famous game Shuffleupagus.
Casually rub elbows and learn helpful tips from some of Denver's coooolist cartoonists as you join forces to defeat the enemy of boredom!

11:20 am – 12:20 pm : Anna & Jerrilyn - Go gocco! the basics of gocco printing: Learn the basics of gocco printing. The print gocco is a small desktop printing machine from Japan. It is simple to use and is like a combination of screen printing and stamping. In this workshop you will learn the very basics of gocco printing and make your very own postcard sized print to take with you.
It's easy & fun!

12:40 pm – 1:10 pm: Shannon Perez Darby & A. Crewe - Emotional Life Cycle a Zine : Have you ever felt overwhelmed about self publishing your work or putting your zine into the world for others to read? Well, if so this workshop is for you! Shannon and Amelia Crewe will talk about some of the ups and downs of the perzine writing and publishing process. Ways to bust through those fears and concerns, ways to get support from other zinesters and give support too! Recommended for folks who have written zines and have wisdom to share as well as those who want to write zines and want some advice.

This workshop will be perzine specific but everyone is welcome!

1:30 pm – 2:00 pm: Adam Tinnell & Kate Kershenstein - The Free Boutique's Fashion in the Making

2:20 pm – 3:20 pm Amy Reeder Hadley - Drawing Faces : Come watch and learn as Tokyopop and DC Comics artist Amy Reeder Hadley demonstrates how to draw faces. Be sure to bring questions! She can teach anything from the basics of drawing facial features, to how to draw faces at various angles and expressions.
Paper and pencils provided!

3:40 pm – 4:40 pm Growler Distro/Molly - Zines & Music

3:40 pm – 4:40 pm Justin Simoni - How to Screen Print Almost Anything : Learn the basics on how to screen print Almost Anything. Workshop comes with a free zine full of ideas to start you off! Workshop will be slanted on techniques in screen prints using cheap/found materials that don't cost an arm and a leg, but still looking pretty darn smashing.

5:00 pm – 5:30 pm Zachary Kopp - Counterclockwise : "A discussion of L.I.Y. or "Live It Yourself" tactics like indie publishing, hijacking social networking sites to get interviews and more. Today's zinester is reclaimaing his or her creativity from political, religious or scientific censors in defiance of today's profit-dominated publishing industry which clearly value saleability over quality or substance."

JUST ADDED:

Jacob Richards: "How to organize and run an underground newspaper."
