Zine Library Planning Meeting – September 28th, 2003

In Attendance: Kelly, Paul, Molly, Jeremiah, Morgan, Jenni

Library as Resource Center

  • For now, we should have basic zine-making supplies accessible: stapler, tape, glue stick, markers, paper clips, pens, pencils, etc.
  • Once we are up and running, we can revisit the ideas of getting a photocopier or large furniture.

Books

  • Only books directly related to zines or zinesters will be included.
  • This includes (but is not limited to) The Zine Yearbook, Reader’s Guide to the Underground Press, how to start a zine books and books written by zinesters.

Fundraising

  • See the minutes from the 9/14/03 meeting for other ideas.
  • Zines will be sold only if there is already one copy in the library.
  • There will be a “for sale” shelf in the library.  This will include doubles of zines that are already in the library or any zines people donate to be sold.  All profits go to the zine library.
  • Rare zines can be auctioned online.
  • Grant writing – Do we need non-profit status?
    • There is a possibility that we can exist under the umbrella of Breakdown & use their 501c3 number. (Morgan will check in with Breakdown.
  • Make and sell t-shirts and other items using Paul’s silk-screening stuff.
  • Sell zines, t-shirts, etc at Breakdown and Double Entendre
  • Bake sale
  • Yard sale
  • We will not be asking for money from Rich Mackin’s book tour for several reasons.  There hasn’t been enough discussion around the sexual assault accusations.  We will not ask touring events to have benefits for the library; instead we’ll focus on the local scene.  If you are interested in having a discussion about the accusations, we have the zine created by the accusers and you can also read a piece by Rich at http://www.richmackin.org/Projects/ABC/ABC.html

Check-out System

  • This needs to be revisited during the next meeting.  There is some discomfort surrounding the idea of zines not coming back.
  • Should we lend zines out at all?
  • Should people have to sign-in in order to prove that they’ll come back?
  • Should there be a “membership fee” that can be waived if someone can’t afford it?
  • Should we ask for something in return for the zines taken out?  If the zines don’t come back, we get to keep/sell the item left with us.

Future Discussions

  • Furniture
  • Paul’s silk screening stuff
  • Will books have their own section or will they be filtered into the zines in the appropriate section?
  • Will there be a “reference section” of zines that cannot be taken out?  Either because they are rare or in poor condition.
  • What general rules will be listed on a poster for the zine library?

Wish List

  • Photocopier
  • Typewriters
  • Coffeepot (Paul)
  • Spinning rack for zine display (Jeremiah)
  • Hot pot for tea (Jenni)
  • Endless supply of tea and coffee (Jeremiah or dumpster)
  • Shelf for zines to face out (Paul)
  • Lights on side of house and in back
  • A path on the side of the house: cement pavers / flagstone (Morgan check with friend; Paul check on backyard of Double Entendre)

Work Party

  • There will be a work party on Sunday, October 5, 2003.
  • Due to other meetings and commitments, the hours for the work party will be noon to 7pm.
  • 7pm is when the work party ends.  Please come earlier if you plan on contributing.

Next Meeting

  • The next meeting will be on October 12, 2003.  Some people may not be able to make it due to Transform Columbus Day Events that weekend.
  • Agenda Items:
    • What hours will the library be open?
    • What should we do with doubles of zines?
    • Check out procedures
    • Selling zines
    • Soliciting zines (for the library and to sell)
    • Returning zines to their original owners if absolutely necessary
    • Keywords / Location categories
  • Please come with any other agenda items.
  • Please look over the list of Keywords and Locations.  Make note if you think any are unnecessary or if there are any that should be added.

Location

These categories are where the zines will be physically found in the library.  Each zine can only have one “Location.”  When there are many zines by one person or many in a series, they will be listed separately.  This is why there are some names of people and names of zines on this list.

  • Ancient Wisdom Press
  • Art
  • Art & Poetry
  • Audiozines
  • Billy McKay
  • Catalog
  • How To
  • Clamor
  • Coloring Books

  • Perzine
  • Poetry
  • Politics
  • Prison
  • Queer
  • Reviews
  • Sex
  • Survivors

  • Miscellaneous

Keywords

Each zine will have as many keywords listed as are applicable.  Many their keywords will include their “Location.”  This will not be the case when the Location is the name of a person or a zine.  For this reason, many of the Keywords are repeats of the Locations, but there are also additions.

Hey folks!

Just a reminder that our next meeting is this Sunday, October 12, at
7:30 pm. Once again it is being held at 111 W Archer Pl (in the
Baker neighborhood). Anyone needing directions can call 303-282-4980
and talk to Kelly or Jamez. Anyone who is unable to make it, but who
would like to bring up an issue or question, should e-mail it to the
list before the meeting.

Our work party last weekend was small, but productive. The two
broken panes on the front window have been replaced, and another
shelving unit has been painted. Also, a bunch of boxes were collaged
for zine storage/display. And then there was general cleaning, etc...

Looking forard to seeing some of you on Sunday! Happy Transform
Columbus Day Weekend!

hey everyone! here are the minutes from our last meeting - sorry for
taking a few extra days to get them out. have a great weekend!

Meeting 10/12/03

In Attendance: Kelly, Jamez, Jeremiah

What Hours Will The Zine Library Be Open?
-Ultimately, this will need to be somewhat dependent on how many
volunteers we have
-Upon opening, it will be weekends only: Saturday 11-7 and Sunday 1-5
-We'll survey people who come in about what weeknight(s) we should be
open, and adapt the schedule within a reasonable timeframe
-It can also be open by appointment, whenever Kelly or Jamez (or
anyone else) is around.
-Question: what will volunteer shifts be?

Zine Doubles & Sales
-There was discussion of whether we should actually make copies of
every zine we have. We decided that the answer is no, at least for
the time being.
-A possible project would be to compile a list of zinesters' contact
info, making it easier to gain replacement copies if that's needed.
-It was decided that all doubles are going to be sold. There are
quite a lot of them already, and this should provide some revenue for
the library.
-Question: Should those of us who make zines donate some copies for
sale? This was debated, but needs to be discussed again before a
decision is made.

Zine Check Out Procedures
-There will not be any membership fees or deposits required.
-People will be allowed to remove zines from the library after they
have come in 3 times. There will be a self sign-in system to track
attendance, and contact info (phone or e-mail) will be requested when
someone begins checking out items.
-Zines will be due back in 2 weeks, and nothing new may be checked
out by people with outstanding items. (Idea: We should have a
deposit box, so that zines may be returned at any time. What form
should that take exactly?)
-If a person loses or damages a zine while it is in their possession,
they will be asked to pay for it. If, for any reason, they are
unable to do so, they can "pay" by working – cataloging zines or
something like that. If this happens 3 times, that person may no
longer check out items.

Soliciting Zines for the Library
-No zines will be solicited for the purpose of sale.
-Solicitations for the library collection can be made on individual
bases. We are not buying, only accepting donations. We can also put
out flyers to request donations.
-When the library is open, we can keep track of zines that people
request/look for, which are not in our collection, and try to obtain
them. We can also work on filling in gaps in series that we have.
-Anyone who donates zines through the mail should receive a response
from us.

Returning Zines to Their Original Owners
-No zines will be returned. Only donate zines that you are willing
to give up permanently!
-If there are zines that you want to keep, consider making copies and
giving one set to the library.
-Since this decision had not been made previously, if you have
already donated anything that you think you'd like back, let Kelly
know and/or come to retrieve it as soon as possible.

Keyword/Location List Review
-Decisions were made to add the keywords: feminism, religion, and
rape. Punk was suggested but will not be added.
-"How to" will become "How to/D.I.Y", and "Grammar Q&A/Word
Watchers/Word Play" will become "Grammar/Vocabulary".

"Read" Columns for Collective Members
-These columns allow you to mark which of the zines in the library's
collection you have read, for your own personal tracking and so that
people can ask questions effectively.
-Anyone who wants a column should let Kelly know, and she'll add one
for you.

Computer Stuff
-The zine database is too large to fit on a floppy disk (for backup
or transfer to the laptop). A CD has not yet been tried, but it may
require a Zip drive. (Is this something that anyone has?)
-The laptop (IBM Thinkpad) was checked and it definitely works. It
is running Windows 95 and has CD and floppy drives.

Random Other Stuff
-Kelly is expecting a significant donation of zines in the mail
from "Adam".
-Jeremiah has been working on a ramp to make the space wheelchair-
accessible, and that is still in progress.
-Breakdown has offered us a financial partnership, which would allow
us to use their status as a nonprofit to apply for grants, etc. They
are also willing to provide us with a page on their website to be
used until we are able to develop our own.

Needed/Wanted Reminders
-The combination for the lock (Paul)
-Boxes, cereal or otherwise – everyone please save these.
-Space heater (Mark, are you still able to donate one?)
-New glass for the bottom pane of the side window
-Coffeepot (Paul?) and hot pot (Jenni?)
-Display Shelf (Paul)
-Bookends
-Lights for the outside of the building
-Path markers for the side yard (Paul or Morgan?)

Next Meeting
-The next meeting will be on Sunday, October 26th at 7:30pm. Again,
it will be held at 111 W Archer Pl (in the Baker neighborhood).
-In that meeting, we will discuss the remaining questions from the
above discussions, as well as any other agenda items that anyone
brings.
-It has been suggested that we also go ahead and set an opening date,
figure out what exactly needs to happen

Hey everyone-

We had another super-productive meeting on Sunday, including deciding on the opening day! Woo hoo! Please read the minutes to see what still needs to be done and what questions were brought up...

Zine Library Planning Meeting – October 26th, 2003

In Attendance: Kelly, Jamez, Dani

What is the line between a zine and a professional comic book?

  • We will carry all non-corporate / independent comic books
  • If someone objects to a comic book that is in the library, it can be brought to the collective and we’ll decide on a case-by-case basis

Selling zines

  • Doubles of zines will be sold through grab bags on the Internet.  Jamez and Kelly have observed this to be a successful method of selling zines quickly, and it should be an easy way for the Denver Zine Library to get some money.
  • Jamez volunteered to coordinate the selling of grab bags by putting a notice on Internet listservs and filling and mailing orders.
  • Collective members are welcome to donate their own zines to be included in the grab bags, but we will not ask collective members to give copies for sale in the library space.

Volunteer Shifts

  • Shifts will be 4 hours long.  Saturdays: 11-3 and 3-7.  Sundays: 1-5
  • Two volunteers are encouraged to work each shift, but the library can be open with one person.

Opening Day

  • The library will officially open on Saturday, December 6, 2003
  • There will be an opening event Friday evening, December, 5, 2003.  There was a suggestion to get local musicians (possibly including Bad Weather California) to play along with a variety of zine readings.

Random

  • 3 is the maximum number of zines that someone can take out at once.
  • Kelly received a box of zines and books as a donation to the library from someone who advertised on a listserv.
  • Jamez & Kelly bought a mold for making stepping-stones.  All we need now is concrete.

To Do before opening

  • Make flyers advertising the library: one side will be an announcement of the opening date; the other will be soliciting donations for the library.
  • Alphabetize and put zines on display.
  • Get a heater
  • Patch the side window
  • Get chairs/furniture
  • Set up a volunteer schedule
  • Create a website through Breakdown (?)
  • Plan the opening event
  • Advertise for the opening event
  • Make a ramp
  • Do we have a name? Is it “Denver Zine Library” or should it be something else?
  • Make stepping stones
  • Light outside of the library
  • Create a searchable paper copy of the catalog
  • Finish categorizing zines

Work Party

  • There will be a work party on Sunday, November 2 from 4-7pm.  There are lots of fun jobs to be done like painting, collaging, and looking at zines.  The more people who come, the more fun and easy the work will be!

Next Meeting

  • The next meeting will be on Sunday, November 9, 7:30pm at 111 W. Archer Pl.
  • Please feel free to voice any ideas for future agendas on the listserv or bring them to the next meeting.
  • There are only 2 meetings left before the zine library is scheduled to open.  Please voice any ideas / concerns / suggestions if you have them.

Future agenda items

  • Does anyone want a “read” column in the database to track which zines you’ve read?
  • Does anyone have a zip-drive we can use to put the database onto the laptop?
  • Does anyone have a copy of Miscrosoft Office (including Access)?
  • What should the opening event be?

Advertising Ideas

  • Post flyers – Full page size on bulletin boards, quarter size for giving out
    • Double Entendre
    • Breakdown
    • Mercury Café
    • Watercourse
    • PFLAG newsletter

Hey folks!

Last Sunday we had another small, but productive, work party. There
were three of us and we worked on getting the zines categorized and
into their appropriate locations. It's a fun task, cuz you get to
look at, skim, and read from a whole bunch of zines - and there's
more of it to be done, if anyone is interested and willing....

And a reminder: Meeting this Sunday at 7:30. The location, as
always, is 111 W Archer Pl. Hope to see you all there! Questions:
Call me or Kelly at 303-282-4980. Can't make it, but want to add
something to the agenda anyway? E-mail it to the list anytime before

Ok, so, not a lot of people showed up for the meeting, just three, but, the
meeting was good and a success anywho...

so

some things that came up

     1. We need a zip drive maybe.
     2. The program that we got needs win XP, so we were wondering if anyone
had an older version of
         Access or MS Office

What we did and What we talked about

     1. The name of the Denver Zine Library will be....The Denver Zine
Library.
     2. Opeing Event will be on December 5th. 7:00 to 10:00
Talked about a call for entries and suggestions for bands to
play and people who could read
              from their zines.
Deadline for bands to contact DZL, next Sunday, so if
you know anybody who would
like to play, Jamez is the contact. Bands need to be
the quite sort, probably, so as not
to de-sturb the neighbors too much...
Talked about food donations, snacks that sort of thing, Kelly
will get that stuff, and I,
Jeremiah can get spreads and frills and stuff from
the Vitamin Cottage.
Event will be free with a Donation Jar.
      3. Flyers - making those next week. There is a work party next week,
sunday, from 4:00-6:00
      4. Kelly, Jamez, and I went through the questionable zines/not zines
and decided on that.
      5. WORK PARTY and event discussion Sunday 4-6 111 Archer,
Meeting on the 23rd @7:30 same place.

Cool? cool.

thanks
Jeremiah T.

Hey all!
So there's only a few days left to figure out the lineup for our fabulous
opening event! First question, who would like to read from their zine??
All of you are welcome to, but you need to let me know this week! And who
else do you know who might like to read? Put me in touch with them asap.
And then we need music, too! We do have one band already lined up, Bad
Weather California. Are any of you in bands that can play a short
acoustic set? Or know anyone else who is? Talk to them, talk to me, tell
them to talk to me. Let's make this an amazing show!! Hope to hear from
all of you real soon...
Jamez

>Talked about a call for entries and suggestions for bands to play and
people who could read from their zines. Deadline for bands/readers to
contact DZL is next Sunday, so if you know anybody who would like to
perform, Jamez is the contact. Bands/musicians need to be acoustic.

Hey everyone-

The opening of the zine library is exactly a week away and we need help flyering!

Jamez made some fantastic flyers and we already put them in a bunch of places (see below), but we need as many to go out as possible.  Since we’re going to be out of town for the weekend, we put an envelope on the front door with the extra flyers. Please, please, please come and get some and put them in your favorite hangout places or anywhere you think they should go.  Please take as many as you think you’ll need, but leave some for other folks to pick up.

Just an update: the lineup for the opening event is pretty exciting (although it’s not too late to sign up – talk to Jamez) and we are getting free bagels from Einstein’s Bagels. Woo hoo! There are 2712 item in the computer catalog at the moment and we still have a handful more to put in.  Also, the space is almost completely set up (although anyone who wants to help finish that work in the upcoming week would be welcome to do so).  We still need more display boxes (preferably ones that can hold half size zines).

AND... we have a webpage - http://www.geocities.com/denverzinelibrary/index.html

Right now, it just has the same information as the flyers, but I'll make it fancier soon.

So, tell all your friends, advertise any way you think is good and we'll see you on Friday!

Have a great weekend,

kelly

Places already flyered:

  • Breakdown
  • Double Entendre
  • Heaven Sent Me
  • Wired
  • Laundromat on Broadway and Bayaud
  • Ichabod’s Books
  • Freaky’s on Broadway and Irvington
  • Get Fired Up on Broadway and 1st
  • Twist & Shout (& Underground)
  • Wax Trax (& Wax Trax II)
  • Watercourse

Hey all-

For those of you who didn't make it to the opening event, it went great!  We had about 60 people throughout the night and it seemed like everyone had fun.

The next planning meeting is going to be this Sunday, December 14th at 7:30pm. Come to 111 W. Archer Pl. (call 3030-282-4980 for directions / more info).

You can check out the new website at http://www.geocities.com/denverzinelibrary.  I updated it today so that the formatting on the catalog is better. Let me know if you think something else should be on it...

Also, we're looking for people who have extra chairs for the library.  Please put the word out and let us know if you have any leads.  I'm available after 4:30 most weeknights to pick up furniture...

Hope to see you Sunday,
kelly

hey zinesters! so, as of yet, we haven't come up with an effective
way to do scheduling for volunteer shifts. that's definitely
something to discuss at sunday's meeting! in the meantime, we need
for this weekend to be covered. the shifts, for those who don't know
or don't remember, are saturday 11-3 and 3-7, sunday 1-5. no one
should ever be alone on a shift, so there is always company - and
lots of good reading material. there's a space heater, a coffee pot,
and all the other comforts of home - or okay, maybe not all of them.
anyway, for this weekend, there is no one at all signed up for
saturday, and only one person on sunday, so if any of you can cover
any shifts, please let me know as soon as you are able. and don't
worry if this will be your first time - there will be a folder full
of all the info you need to keep things running smoothly...
thanks, jamez

ps - jenni, i know you said you'd work a shift this weekend. sorry i
never called you back to follow up. which one would you like?

hey all!

stuff continues to go well with the library - at least a couple people
have been coming in on each open day, and there was even a "by
appointment" opening this week...

we have a lot of people who've expressed interest in volunteering, and i
am goin to contact them today to start working that out.

in the meantime, we need coverage for this weekend. jenni is signed up
for the sunday shift, but so far that's it! kelly's out of town, and i
can cover saturday by myself if i have to, altho i'd prefer not to have
to. and i have to work (at my "real" job) sunday, so if anyone can take
the sunday shift along with jenni, that would be rad.

we haven't figured out an online shift signup method yet, altho there is a
signup clipboard in the library itself. anyone who can work this weekend,
please call me (303-282-4980) or e-mail me, as soon as you can.

also, kelly updated the website a whole lot and put up pictures from the
opening event. you should all check it out:
http://www.geocities.com/denverzinelibrary

and one last piece of news... my friend, dan buck from south dakota, just
sent us 6 boxes filled with zines - a huge donation! dan is rad, and our
shelves are gonna be even fuller as soon as we can get them all cataloged.

hope to see you all soon,
jamez

Hey all!

I've got three quick announcements/reminders about the next few days...

First, we could still use some volunteers for tomorrow (Saturday). Sunday
is actually covered already, which is great. (Any new volunteers who are
interested in doing a training shift with me on Saturday, call me in the
morning at 303-282-4980.)

Also, Sunday night is our next planning meeting. Meetings are in no way
required of volunteers, but this is where you get to actually make
decisions about the library. They're usually pretty short and laidback,
and sometimes we get dinner. This is our first meeting on the new monthly
schedule and will be held at 6pm. Meetings are at 111 W Archer Pl, but in
the house, not the library. Hope to see some of you there...

And finally, there is a zine event coming up this week!!! Rich Mackin
will be doing a show at Breakdown on Monday night, Jan 5. Rich does the
zine, Book of Letters, which we have several issues of in the library. We
also have his first book, Dear Mr. Mackin, and this tour is to promote his
new book. Rich is really funny, while also being really political. I've
seen him do shows before, and I'd recommend them highly. For more info
about the show, check with Breakdown Book Collective.

~Jamez

PS - Due to all the recent zine donations, we now have over 3,500 zines,
cataloged and on the library shelves!!

Hey, I just stumbled on to the Zine library web site by accident.
I thought I would send in some of my zines, but decided to check the

If I lived in Denver I would be there to lend a hand.

Hey Zine Lovers!

We had our monthly planning meeting this Sunday, and it was small, but
productive. The meetings are fairly short and always fun - think about
coming to the next one. They're open to everyone, whether or not you've
ever come before. In any case, here are this week's minutes. There's
some exciting stuff here (like an upcoming party), so read on...

March 1, 2004 6pm
Attendance: Kelly (facilitator), Jamez (minutes), and Mark (timekeeper)

First we talked about fundraising ideas.
- Mark is in college at Red Rocks, and he will check with his school about
tabling on campus. This would be great outreach, and he could also sell
zine doubles and such.
- Kelly suggested having a fundraiser event at the Hi Dive (a bar/venue on
Broadway, near the library.) Ideas were thrown out for what this event
might be, but no plans yet. Kelly will talk to the Hi Dive to see if this
is a realistic option.
- We decided that we should have DZL t-shirts. The Skanky Pirates
(Whitney and Shari) could screen them for us and they do sales on
consignment, but we need to first come up with a design idea. Anyone got
any ideas?? Whether you're an artist and want to draw something or you
just have a concept that you want to throw out for someone else to draw,
please do so. Share your ideas with the list here, and let's discuss!

Then we talked about having a party...
- We are over 3,900 zines right now, and hitting 4,000 seems like a good
excuse for a party. We've probably already got enough stuff (uncataloged)
to push us over the edge.
- To give us enough planning time, we set the party for Saturday, March 6,
which happens to be the library's 3-month anniversary.
- After much discussion about what the party should be like and where it
should be held, this is the tentative plan for now: During the normal
library hours, we will have food and zine readings, maybe music and art,
etc - but keep it fairly low-key. Then, around 9 or so, we have the wild
half of the party somewhere else, with bands and/or djs, and dancing and
general rowdiness.
- The tentative location for that stuff is Garageland (a warehouse at 27th
and Walnut). Mark is friends with one of the people who leases it and
talked to them about the idea. We have a tentative yes right now.
They're totally into the idea, but need to get back to us to confirm the
date. We'll know for sure sometime this week.
- Some of the bands we might talk to about playing are Scumbag Family
Dinner, Nippon Cha Cha Cha, Bad Weather California, and Bart's band
(name??). Other suggestions would be welcome. Also, Jason Heller was
suggested as a DJ.
- Kelly is in charge of getting food donated. Einstein's has made it
clear that they would give us food again (they donated to the opening
party), and she will also contact Food Not Bombs, as well as Ellen, who
may have connections to getting other food.
*** Next Sunday, the 8th, we are meeting at 6pm to work on planning the
party. This meeting will deal only with the party and is guarunteed fun.
We'll probably order pizza or something if folks want to. please, please
come, so we can make this party a rockin' good time! ***

Next topic: non-profit status
- Breakdown Book Collective has said that we can be under their non-profit
status, so that we can write grants
- First we need to get a trade name. Kelly has the info on how to do that
and will get it taken care of.
- We also need to create a mission statement document. It has to include:
who we are, what we do, and how we make decisions. (We also need to be
able to demonstrate how that fits within Breakdown's mission)
- At next month's meeting (March 7, 6pm) we will talk about our mission
statment. The goal is to have that completed in that meeting, so please
think about it beforehand and come with ideas or drafts. If you are
unable to come to the meeting, but have any ideas or suggestions, please
send them to the list to be discussed. And we can start this discussion
now, if people want to...

There was a question of displaying zinester flyers that people send us,
and we decided not to display them, but to leave them in a "free" box.

And finally, Virus Zine requested an interview about the zine library for
their next issue. The questions were e-mailed to Kelly, who answered
them. Jamez and Mark both went through her answers and edited. The
responses have now been sent back, so look for that to be released soon...

Hope to see all of you this Sunday!
Take care,
Jamez

Hey zinesters!

So March 6th is our 3 month anniversary of being open. And we've crossed
over 4000 zines in our collection. So, for those two reasons, we're gonna
celebrate big!!!

Besides the big party that night at Garageland, we're also gonna have some
more low-key events during the library's open hours. And that's why I'm
writing... We wanna have 30-40 minute blocks of zinesters reading (or
singing or dancing or whatever they do) at 3 and at 5 on the 6th. We're
getting food donated, and we'll advertise as much as we can...

So what I'm looking for is zinesters who want to perform! I'm in charge
of the lineup, so if you're interested, get back to me as soon as you
can...

Jamez

ps - in other exciting news, this weekend all 6 volunteer shifts were
filled by different people. that was a first - let's keep it up!

****************************************************

What? The Denver Zine Library has over 4,000 zines?

Yep! And we think that’s enough reason to throw an
all day party! Join us on Saturday, March 6th, the
three-month anniversary of the library opening.

Come by the library from 11am-7pm to read some zines,
get some free food, and hear some fabulous zinesters
read. Readings will take place at 3pm and 6pm. The
library is located at 111 W. Archer Pl. (3 blocks
south of 1st and 1 block west of Broadway).

Then… at 9pm, there will be music and dancing at
Garageland (2721 Walnut St). There is a $3-$5 sliding
scale cover. I know you may be thinking, “Oh darn! A
cover?” But just remember that all of the proceeds
are going to the zine library to make it the biggest
and best it can be. There will be two local bands –
The Illegal Goose Band and another band to be
announced. There will also be some local DJs
supplying us with a rockin’ dance party. Plus, $1
PBRs!

Woo hoo!

Zine Library Planning Meeting – March 21, 2004

In Attendance: Jamez, Kristy, and Kelly

Zoning

·        The short version of the story is that a neighbor complained about the zine library to neighborhood inspections and we received a business card from a zoning inspector. We e-mailed back and forth a few times and I later called the zoning office.  I still don’t have a clear understanding of what laws are being broken. First, we were accused of being a business (we’re not), then I was told that the fact that the library is in a detached (from the house) building was a problem.  Then I was told that we are not allowed to display any “merchandise.” I explained that we’re not selling anything, so we do not have merchandise, but they said I can’t have anything on display.  I asked about it in the context of a hobby and was told, “When I think of a hobby, I think of something I do by myself, not with everybody else.”

  • The library is NOT closing. If needed, we’ll move the space, but we will not be shut down. And we’re not going to move until we’re given actual documentation that says we can’t do what we’re doing.

Moving

  • If we have to move because of the zoning stuff, the following ideas were proposed for places:
  • The Other Side Arts has art galleries that would be fairly cheap to rent. Kristy is going to get more info on this possibility. This might be the best option since we won’t be in someone else’s space.
  • Iron Feather is a new book and zine store (at 32nd and Tejon?). Stevyn, the owner, is awesome and has been really supportive of the library. They have limited open hours, so there is a possibility that, if this works, we can have volunteers staffing the library. Jamez is going to check out Iron Feather and talk to Stevyn
  • Breakdown / Double Entendre are not as appealing because there is a greater chance of zines going missing since we don’t have enough volunteer power to have someone specifically in charge of the library. Double Entendre is not a zine-focused space. And Breakdown has so much going on in the space, that it would be impossible to have all of their volunteers know what to do with the library.

Hi-Dive Benefit

  • The next library benefit is going to be at the Hi-Dive (right around the corner from the library) on Tuesday, April 13th.
  • We need DJs! Kelly is going to talk to Claudine since she offered to help find DJs at the Garageland benefit.
  • We’re not sure if we get to set the cover price, but if so, it’s going to be a $2-5 sliding scale.
  • Jamez is going to ask Amanda to make the flyers for the event while she’s working at the library on Wednesday (For those of you who don’t know, we have two volunteers who are putting in some time each Wednesday afternoon).
  • We’re going to set some fundraising goals.

Garageland Benefit

  • It was a success! The party lasted until after 4am.
  • Earlier in the day, 45 people came to the zine library
  • Kelly is going to ask Mark to check in with the GL folks to see if the money situation is settled.
  • As of now, we made $210.82 that night! Woo hoo!
  • Chris Conner dumpstered a paper cutter for the zine library that was left at GL.  When we check in about the money, we’ll see if the paper cutter is still there.

Westword Article

  • Jason Heller wrote and awesome article about the zine library for the Westword.  It came on last Thursday.  Go get a copy or read it online at http://www.westword.com/issues/2004-03-18/news.html/1/index.html

Steve and Loretta

  • Kelly’s next door neighbor, Steve, pulled Kelly aside on Thursday to chat about some concerns he has about the library:
    • With the article published in the Westword, they’re nervous that there’s going to be a lot of traffic coming through. He did note how most of the people who are coming are on foot or bike, so parking hasn’t been a problem.
    • Dogs have been off-leash and have gotten in they’re yard.  And that doesn’t make them happy. So, we decided tonight that dogs are welcome at the library, but they must be on a leash.
    • There is not much separating the library yard from their yard.  Steve and Loretta both do a lot of gardening and are concerned about a loss of privacy.
  • Steve expressed how supportive he is of the space and doesn’t want to see it pushed out.  He offered to help with the zoning issue to show that there are people in the neighborhood who support its presence. He also said that if he finds out who complained about the library, he’d talk to them and explain that the library is a good thing.
  • We want to continue to be friendly with the neighbors, so it is important that the volunteers make sure visitors are behaving appropriately.

Non-Profit Status

  • We are holding off on being umbrella-ed by Breakdown’s non-profit status because the connection to another organization might hurt us in terms of zoning.
  • For now, we are going to see what needs to be done to become a non-profit on our own. Kelly will download the forms and such.

Website

  • Kelly’s computer is being really bizarre and won’t run FrontPage anymore (the program has been uninstalled and reinstalled two times). So, while the homepage has been updated, the catalog is pretty old. Kelly and Kristy are going to work on it somewhere else to make sure all the updated info is on the website.
  • Things to add to the website: a section of local zines, reviews, maybe someday have the database searchable by state. Kelly will talk to Bart about various website options.
  • Our website stats have been awesome.  Here are some numbers of how many people have gone to the website after the article in the Westword came out: Thurs: 32, Friday: 11, Saturday: 14.

What To Do With Money We Raise

  • Kelly will check OfficeMax to see what kind of security boxes they have.  We’ll keep money in that.
  • We will not open a bank account because of zoning issues.

Wish List

  • More shelves – we’re almost out of space
  • Wood to put in the bottom of the front-facing display shelf (if we put zines in it now, they fall too low and can’t be seen.
  • Wood to make a small table/counter next to the window by the door.  This will cover the big, weird metal thing and give us space to display flyers or use as a table.
  • A couch – Jamez spotted one behind the Laundromat near the zine library.  If it’s still there, it might be able to be carried back to the library.
