__Can Gore Win the Electoral Map But Lose the Popular Vote: That's the
Configuration on November 1

Gore is declining a bit in the polls nationally, but gaining in key states. The
possibility that Al could win the electoral vote but lose the popular vote is
becoming a bit more real. Let's hope he wins both. Otherwise this nation is
going to have its undies in a bunch for sometime to come.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001031/pl/poll_tuesday_dc_12.html

__Bush Lays Plans to Steal Election

In recent years, the Republican mantras have been "original intent of the
Founding Fathers" and "the rule of law". But if Al Gore wins the majority of
votes in the Electoral College, George W. Bush plans to steal the election using
right-wing talk radio and a massive advertising blitz. Buckle up folks, we could
be in for a very bumpy ride.
http://www.nydailynews.com/2000-11-01/News_and_Views/Beyond_the_City/a-86769.asp

__Did Bush Lie about a Hate-Crimes Bill in Texas?

Bush probably can't pronounce the word prevaricator -- and would have to run to
the dictionary to figure out what it means. But he'd find his photo there right
next to the word. Molly Ivins is pure Molly in telling us how Dubya wouldn't
support the hate crimes bill in Texas. More than that, he was a divisive
uncompassionate figure in the whole affair.
http://www.star-telegram.com/columnist/ivins2.htm

__Bush: Yale 'went downhill since they admitted women.'

No, this isn't a another mangled Bushism. These words came straight from the
heart of the old DKE fraternity president. He continued, "Women changed the
social dynamic for the worse." Reminds us of what he told a reporter a few years
ago when asked what he discussed with his dad, who played baseball at Yale.
"Pussy", he replied.
http://salon.com/politics/feature/2000/11/01/bush/print.html

__Bush is a Natural Born Liar, Pure and Simple

Remember that Aretha Franklin Tune: "I'm Just a Natural Born Woman." Well
Dubya's version is "I'm Just a Natural Born Liar." The rumor is that he sings it
in the shower every morning. The great and tragic irony of this campaign is
that the Bush spinners tagged Al Gore as an exaggerator when it is the Bush Boy
who has a chronic problem with telling the truth.
http://www.msnbc.com/news/483554.asp?0na=22358U5-

__What Was the New York Times Thinking in Praising Bush? Commentary from a
Democrats.com/BuzzFlash Reader

In endorsing Gore, the New York Times went out of its way to say nice things
about Dubya. Are they hedging their bets in case Bush wins and they want access
to his administration? Or are they truly blind to Dubya's sophomoric lying and
flaws?
It takes one of our readers to take on the esteemed paper of record.
http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/Content

__Hillary Decries Lazio Attacks as 'Despicable'

Well, Rick Lazio is now campaigning at the bottom of the scum pond. Hillary
calls his current ads "despicable." Trying to connect Hillary to the attack on
the USS Cole is reprehensible. But Lazio is just another junkyard attack dog in
the end, Newt Gingrich style.

___Printing, Folding, Stuffing, Licking, Stamping, Sorting, Mailing -- Roll up
your sleves for some old style GOTV

After you’ve forwarded today’s urgent last minute e-mail appeals to your friends
push back your chair, turn off your computer and leave the building. Head to
the local campaign headquarters, pull up a plastic folding chair and jump in.
The techniques of last minute mass voter contact may seem archaic by our “new
economy”’ standards – folding letters by hand? – but they also represent our
best chance to win. The remaining undecided voters are people who will reach a
conclusion based on sense of smell. It is certainly among my personal favorites
of the five senses, but it is not one that responds well to reason. And
remember, there is a great medium for reaching the last minute voters called
television. Let it do its job.
Our job is no longer talking to the undecideds. It is down to the one-on-one
telephone calls to Democrats reminding them that this is the election of a
lifetime, a contest for the most powerful position on earth that will be decided
by their vote.

http://www.democrats.com/view.cfm?id=446

___Fuzzy Math that Matters: The Right Wing Campaign Against the Environment

Watch how they do this: First a conservative flack comes out with a report
filled with erroneous numbers. The major news media mostly ignore an attempt by
credible people to set the record straight. Then the Republican leadership
climbs aboard the rickety platform, using it as the foundation for public policy
proposals that are unfounded, ill-considered and unwise. And what do you get out
of this dissembling and dishonesty? You get the very high potential for
environmental disaster in one of America’s greatest natural treasures, the Artic
National Wildlife Refuge, which at its peak production could only produce enough
energy to meet the U.S. demand for energy for a matter of weeks.

__Media Breaks Silence on Bush's AWOL

It's a big day, folks. The mainstream media finally broke its silence about Bush
going AWOL for the last two years of his Air National Guard service. Reporter
Walter Robinson of the Boston Globe gets the credit for reporting on two stories
covered by Democrats.com exclusives - the reward offered by Alabama veterans
(now $3,500), and former VA Secretary Jesse Brown's criticism of Bush. The Globe
story was hammered by Senator Bob Kerrey, the only Congressional Medal of Honor
winner in Congress, on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews. It was also
discussed by Alan Holmes on FOX's Hannity & Colmes.
http://smokingjet.com

__Take a Look in George W's Skeleton Closet: It Will Cause Quite a Halloween
Fright!

Lots of chilling scares are in store when you look at the skeleton's piled up in
Dubya's closet. Not for the squeamish!
http://www.realchange.org/bushjr.htm

__It's an Eleven Point Lead for Gore In Florida!

The tide hasn't completely turned yet, but there are some very promising signs.
Conventional wisdom says that George W. can't win without Florida. Well, one
poll shows Al with an eleven point lead. We'll take it.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001030/ts/poll_monday_dc_1.html

__If Carnahan's Widow Wins Missouri Seat, GOP Says that They Won't Seat Her in
Senate

Just as the widow of Governor Mel Carnahan announced that she would accept an
appointment to the Senate if people vote for her husband's name, the GOP is
acting like jerks and vowing not to seat her. That's according to Bob Novak, the
GOP house organ. Boy, and the Republicans claim to be civil and respectful.
They should get a good strapping for behaving that way toward a lady!
http://www.suntimes.com/output/novak/novak30.html

__Democratic Senate Within Reach

The Republicans now control the U.S. Senate with a slim 54-46 majority.
Democrats need a net gain of 4 Senate seats to tie the Republicans at 50-50, and
a net gain of 5 to take control of the Senate. A Democratic net gain of 2 seats
is now likely, with 7 races simply too close to call. These close races include
5 possible Democratic pickups and only 2 possible Republican pickups. That makes
a Democratic Senate statistically possible. Let's get out the vote!!
http://www.democrats.com/display.cfm?id=162

__NARAL: 'A Vote for Nader is a Vote for Bush is a Vote to Overturn Roe v. Wade'

Nader appears to be relatively indifferent about the fate of Roe V. Wade, as he
is about many non-corporate corruption issues. So NARAL has launched an ad
campaign to let Americans know that voting for Nader is a vote for endangering a
woman's choice. See the news release and the ad itself.
http://www.naral.com/mediaresources/press/pr102500_nader.html

__Tom DeLay Nixes Budget Deal, Heads for Clinton Showdown

Tom DeLay, Bush's fellow conservative Texan (okay, Tommy Boy is a half-crazed
zealot), pulled the rug out from under his house negotiators on a budget deal.
If anyone had any doubt that Hastert is just a figurehead Speaker, they can see
his strings now. DeLay is banking that the stand-off with the President will
help win a few hotly contested Congressional seats for the GOP. The last time
Tommy Boy and Newtie went mano-a-mano with Clinton on the budget, they got their
pants pulled off. Once again, we'll bet on Clinton -- and the election.

__$2000 Reward for Proof that Bush Reported for Duty in Texas!

Last week, Democrats.com doubled a $1000 reward offered by a a group of Alabama
Vietnam veterans for proof that Bush reported for duty in Alabama in 1972, as he
repeatedly said he did. No one has yet claimed that reward. Now there's another
$2000 reward - this time for proof that Bush reported for duty in Texas any time
between May 1972 and July 1973. Again, Bush insists he reported for duty during
this period. But the facts show otherwise. This reward is being advertised in
newspapers across the country. It's time the media noticed that George W. Bush
was both AWOL and a liar.
http://www.democrats.com/display.cfm?id=166

__Bush's Top 10 Lies, Exaggerations And 'Obsfucations' About His Military
Service

Governor Bush has made credibility the central issue of this campaign, and makes
almost daily references to the Vice President’s alleged exaggerations and lack
of truthfulness. But on a subject that could not be more important for his
presidential candidacy, his own military service, the record shows that George
W. Bush has exaggerated and even lied about his service.
http://www.democrats.com/display.cfm?id=165

__New York Times Doesn't Buy the Bush Snake Oil Routine, Endorses Gore

Despite the paper's recent lapses into promoting anti-gore exaggeration stories,
the New York Times strongly endorses Gore in their Sunday edition. Of Bush,
they write: "Mr. Bush's main professional experience was running a baseball team
financed by friends and serving for six years as governor in a state where the
chief executive has limited budgetary and operational powers." At least
somebody noticed.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/29/opinion/29SUN1.html

__Gore Preaches on Sunday to the Democrats Most Loyal Voter Base, and Lieberman
Questions Bush's Ability to Lead

George W. took the day off on Sunday, which is consistent with his leisurely
style of running the state of Texas. The NYT recently reported that he takes
two hour lunch breaks and wraps a day (of photo opportunities and 15-minute
death penalty considerations)up by 5 pm. Meanwhile, Gore shored up black
support in Michigan and Lieberman finally called into question Bush's ability to
lead. Let's hope that it's not too little, too late.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20001029/el/campaign_rdp_179.html

__Why Does the Media Love Beating up on Gore?

Why, because they're lazy. The media takes the Bush fiction fed to them at face
value. It saves them the research time of looking into the facts. A
five-year-old could see through Dubya, but not the inside-the-beltway pundits.
http://www.salon.com/politics/feature/2000/10/27/media/index.html

__The Big Dog Helps Boost Black Voter Turnout in Virginia.

Bring on Bill. Campaigning in Virginia for Charles Robb, the President was also
helping out the Gore/Lieberman ticket by boosting black voter turnout. Let the
big dog loose!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38627-2000Oct29.html

__Sierra Club Scolds Nader: Calls Ralph's Strategy Ruinous

The Sierra Club is fed up with Ralph Nader's sanctimonius antics. In a
lacerating letter from the head of the Sierra Club to Mr. Green Party, Nader is
excoriated for his indifference to the destruction that a Bush administration
will heap upon the environment. The Sierra Club calls Nader everything from an
opportunist to a man who has betrayed his followers and ideals.
http://lists.sierraclub.org/SCRIPTS/WA.EXE?A2=ind0010&L=ce-scnews-releases&D=1&T\
=0&H=1&O=D&P=1649

__Will Half of the Nader Supporters Bail Out on Election Day?

Well, we certainly hope so. Nader seems to be on a slash and burn riff right
now, calling for a political Armageddon by facilitating Bush's election. Who
said Ralph didn't have an outsize ego/savior problem? Maybe some of his
supporters will decide that they don't want to be around to pick up the pieces
after a Bush victory.
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/DailyNews/trackingpoll_001026.html

__Stop Flirting with Nader, Goodman Warns.

Ellen Goodman fesses up. She had a brief flirtation with Nader, but now she's
sorry about the whole thing. "But what happens when you want so much to be right
you end up helping the hard right?" She asks. Nader doesn't seem to give a whit.
http://www.globe.com/dailyglobe2/303/oped/We_can_t_flirt_with_Nader_anymore+.sht\
ml

__Roger Ebert Gives Two Thumbs Down to Bush

We have a plethora of pundits in the lofty world of American journalism. But in
this election, most have then seem to have swallowed hook, line and sinker the
Bush fantastic fantasy campaign. It took America's best known movie critic to
say the emperor is wearing no clothes.
http://www.suntimes.com/output/eb-feature/ebert2.html

__Democratic Senate Within Reach

The Republicans now control the U.S. Senate with a slim 54-46 majority.
Democrats need a net gain of 4 Senate seats to tie the Republicans at 50-50, and
a net gain of 5 to take control of the Senate. A Democratic net gain of 1 seat
is now likely, with 7 races simply too close to call. These close races include
5 possible Democratic pickups and only 2 possible Republican pickups. Keep an
eye on the close races!

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___The George W. Bush Military Record

George W. Bush did not fulfill the military obligations that he committed
himself to as a 21 year old in 1968. This happened because he quit flying
in 1972 as a 25 year old with over 2 years of flying commitment still
required. The public should know that there have been misstatements and
exaggerations on the part of Governor Bush and his staff to attempt to
cover-up this lack of fulfillment of a commitment. The public has a right
to know what really happened when meeting a military obligation when one
seeks the Office of President of The United States.

"DEMOCRATS WON - YOU MADE THE DIFFERENCE!!!"

Wouldn't you love to see that message in your in-box on Wednesday,
November 8?

We want to SEND you that message!!!

And we WILL, if you do 3 things:

1. Send a blank e-mail to dem-vote-subscribe@egroups.com

2. Send this message on to 10 friends

3. Help get out the vote on November 7 by contacting your local
Democratic
campaign, or by volunteering here:
http://www.democrats.org/action/volunteer/index.html

Just think what's at stake on November 7.

Al Gore wants to move us forward, by using the surplus to improve
health
care, education, the environment, and Social Security.

George W. Bush wants to move us backward, by using the surplus for tax
cuts for the rich.

We have faced crucial votes like this before.

In 1980, we elected Ronald Reagan over Jimmy Carter, which produced a
decade of recession and repression.

In 1992, we elected Bill Clinton over George Bush, which produced a
decade
of prosperity and progress.

The 2000 election is critical because it will determine our future
for the
NEXT DECADE.

Don't ever think that your vote doesn't matter. YOUR VOTE IS CRUCIAL!

1800 1 vote gave Thomas Jefferson the presidency over Aaron Burr
1868 1 vote saved Andrew Johnson's presidency
1941 1 vote strengthened selective service before World War II
1960 1 vote per precinct gave JFK the presidency
1993 1 vote by Al Gore led to a balanced budget
2000 1 vote, your vote, can make the difference November 7th

In America, 1 VOTE DOES MATTER. Make your vote count!

1. Send a blank e-mail to dem-vote-subscribe@egroups.com

2. Send this message on to 10 friends

3. Help get out the vote on November 7 by contacting your local
Democratic
campaign, or by volunteering here:
http://www.democrats.org/action/volunteer/index.html

If you do these three things, Democrats will win. And on the morning
of
November 8, you'll see this wonderful message in your in-box:

"DEMOCRATS WON - YOU MADE THE DIFFERENCE!"

Thanks!

__Ralph Nader May Elect George W. Bush

According to Moveon.org, "It now looks like Nader will cost Gore the presidency.
In key swing states -- Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, Maine, New Mexico -- Nader
has garnered enough support to throw the electoral votes to Bush. And those
votes could very likely make the difference." Read the full letter to learn what
YOU can do to avoid a repeat of 1980, when John Anderson siphoned enough votes
from Jimmy Carter to elect Ronald Reagan. Old-timers remember this produced a
massive recession, added $3 trillion to the national debt, and pushed America
far to the right.
http://www.democrats.com/display.cfm?id=160

__Message to Ralph: You're Getting Played for the Fool

It was inevitable. The GOP is now using Nader's attacks on Gore and repackaging
them for ads in battle ground states. Nader thinks he is being idealistic, but
he is getting played for the fool. If he were even half fair, Mr. ethics would
at least be going after Bush as much as he derides Gore. But Nader, in some
ways, is just playing politics as usual. In his battle to be leader of the
left, he has to knock Gore off first to get his 5% of the vote. Ralph, you have
great ideas, but America does not elect philosopher kings and idealists. In the
meantime, while you dwell on Mt. Olympus, us mortals will be left to live
through another Republican middle ages, replete with Tom Delay, Clarence Thomas,
and Jerry Falwell as social fixtures at the White House. Gag me with a spoon,
Ralph. Get real.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20001027/aponline115918_000.htm

__Is Ralph Nader Unsafe at Any Speed?

Nader, as we all know, is poised to play the spoiler, and he's gloating about
it. At this late stage in his life, it seems Ralph, mr. non-personality, has
suddenly discovered his ego. And it's making him unsafe at any speed according
to the New York Times.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/26/opinion/26THU1.html

__To Boost Gore, Clinton will 'Call' Millions of Black Voters

Well, the Gore campaign has consented to let Clinton do a few things at least!
Our man Bill will be "calling" (at least an automated Bill will be) millions of
registered black voters to help get out the vote for Gore. Go Bill!

__Now, George, Let's Fess up on Abortion. Stop Dissembling about Your Position.

When it comes to where Bush stands on abortion, it sort of depends which day you
talk to him. He's generally been trying to give the appearance of being a
reasonable guy about the whole thing. But, of couse, he's not. The right to
lifers believe that Bush is their man and so do we.

In a sign of desperation - and contrary to the rules of the Internet - George W.

support of Bush. But we can play this game too - so click below for the list of
sites to express YOUR views on the Presidential race.

__Right Wing U.S. Senator Could Lose in Race Against a Dead Man

After Missouri Governor Carnahan died in a plane crash, right wing boor John
Ashcroft was considered a shoe in to be re-elected a U.S. Senator. But recent
polls show that, in this case, the dead man may beat the live one. Carnahan's
widow has said that she might accept an appointment to fill the senate seat if
her husband (who is deceased) wins. Stay tuned for this one!

__Paula Jones: 'I Did it for the Money'

What's a moralistic, modest young girl to do? Pose nude for Penthouse, that's
what. Oh Paula, for such a chaste young woman, it does seem a bit odd that
you'd bare your body for the men of America after being the pinup girl for the
right wing moral goon squad. You almost drove the President out of office, and
now you will be sending the men of America into their toilet stalls. We love
the right wing: hypocrites down to the bone. We bet Kenneth Starr will be first
in line for a copy.

__What is Bush's Biggest Lie and Deception: His Assertion that the Texas Death
Penalty is Administered Fairly and Justly

Sometimes we ask ourselves: are we too tough on Bush "Lite"? But we think about
his ongoing assertion that the Texas death penalty is administered fairly and
justly, and we realize just what a liar he is. Not only is he trying to deceive
people, but he is doing so about an issue that is literally a matter of life and
death. Yes, George, you do have a bit of the devil about you. We just can't
help ourselves, because it's true.
http://www.globe.com/dailyglobe2/299/oped/Bush_s_death_factory+.shtml

__Who Will Call the Shots in a Howdy Doody Administration?

It won't be pretty if Dubya moves into the White House. If the Republicans hold
the House, Tom DeLay and Dick Armey will be calling a lot of the shots. After
all, they're fellow Texans. That's enough to give everyone a real Halloween
scare.
http://www.nyobserver.com/pages/conason.htm

__The NRA is Backing Bush With Bucks, Big Time

If you are worried about too many guns on our streets, you should be scared to
death of George W. Bush winning the election. Not only is the NRA backing him,
they are backing him up with big bucks. They lead all comers in campaign
support for their man George.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7979-2000Oct24.html

__It Must be True that Jeb Bush is Slacking in Florida

Gore is ahead of Bush in Florida 46-42 percent among those expected to vote,
according to a New York Times/CBS News
Poll. Seniors are apparently showing the wisdom of age in moving toward Gore.
They know a bogus Social Security scam when they see one -- and they have had
enough of the snake oil salesman from Texas.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001026/pl/poll_florida_dc_3.html

__Our Smokingjet.com Grassroots Campaign Scores a Big Victory!

Our grassroots effort to bring media attention to George W. Bush's military
record scored a big victory today when the Arizona Daily Star published an
editorial challenging Bush to explain his year-long absence. "It is clearly a
coordinated campaign [hooray!!], but this newspaper has received dozens if not
hundreds of e-mails from throughout the nation expressing outrage at the fact
that (1) Texas Gov. George W. Bush did not fulfill his National Guard obligation
in the early 1970s and that (2) the press has failed to disclose this shirking
of duty. The Texas governor's response to the charge is that he basically can't
remember what he did for a year of his life...The argument that Bush completed
his military obligation will remain a simple, unfounded assertion until Bush
explains what he did between May of 1972 and May of 1973."
http://www.azstarnet.com/star/tue/0010242fedit2fBush2f2fin2fservice.html

__Progressive Leaders Stump for Gore

Progressive voters are getting an unusual amount of attention, as Ralph Nader
could tip crucial states away from Al Gore to George W. Bush. Progressive
leaders, including Jesse Jackson, Gloria Steinem, John Sweeney, Paul Wellstone,
Robert Redford, and Melissa Etheridge are stumping in places like Eugene Oregon,
Madison Wisconsin, and Seattle. Gloria Steinem has been reading her top 10
reasons for voting for Gore.

__Dick Cheney Gets By With a Little Help from His Friends: U.S. Embassies Assist
Him in Business Dealings

Oh Dick, count the ways you are an unethical businessman. Rant and wave all you
want about the government being too large, you've done quite well feeding (and
we might say it shows) at the public trough. Everyday, one more scandalous
story emerges about your business affairs. Today we learn that you used people
in U.S. embassies to help in your business dealings. Isn't it great to become a
multi-millionaire at taxpayer expense?

Dick does. Catch the latest rage: the "Slim" Cheney rap dance!

Clinton Announces Record U.S. Surplus

We'll Take It, We'll Take It!

Is it Elitist to Say that Howdy Doody is Not Presidential Material?

Cheney's Company is the Target of a Criminal Investigation

Progressive Leaders Try to Cut Down the Nader Vote

___.COMMENT__________In Partnership with BuzzFlash.com___________

__Clinton Announces Record U.S. Surplus

It's not the kind of news item that should get overlooked in an election year.
The U.S. is posting its largest budget surplus ever. Even though, the
Clinton/Gore team put this country's economic house in order, they aren't
getting enough credit from the voters. If the Republicans were presiding over
this sort of unprecedented period of economic well-being, you know the media
would be lavishing credit on them. But the budget surplus story is getting
drowned out by the election year white noise. How odd..
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20001024/pl/budget_surplus.html

__We'll Take It, We'll Take It!

It finally looks like Howdy Doody has peaked in the polls. The man whose slogan
should be "I may have been a no-good alcoholic, drug user, skirt chasing failure
in business, but I'm a Bush Goddamnit!" is hopefully going back south -- and
this time for good. In the latest Reuters/MSNBC Poll Gore has rebounded and is
up three points.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001024/pl/poll_tuesday_dc_10.html

__Is it Elitist to Say that Howdy Doody is Not Presidential Material?

About that Howdy Doody thing. Bush's campaign has successfully developed this
brush off: "You're an elitist (i.e., intellectual) if you think the Governor is
too dim-witted to be President." The Bush campaign has taken America's inbred
suspicion of intelligent leaders to an extreme. It really boils down to this:
The Bush consultants are relying on a sort of perverted affirmative action.
"Why can't Howdy Doody be president?" Karen Hughes might ask. "Are you
prejudiced against dumb people, or what?" This second grade gambit has
astonishingly kept the media away from even remotely questioning Bush's fitness
to be the leader of the most powerful nation on earth. It's as if the whole
campaign press corps chowed down on Lotus leaves. Maybe they have.
http://www.salon.com/politics/feature/2000/10/24/bush/index.html

__Cheney's Company is the Target of a Criminal Investigation

Cheney wants to reduce the size of government, but his company made bucket loads
of dollars off of government contracts. Now the Feds are investigating Dick's
oil services company for defrauding the taxpayers, so to speak. Of course, Dick
and George W. are staying mum about the whole thing. Oh, Dick, there's nothing
like "Wealth"fare fraud, is there now?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A7923-2000Oct24.html

__Progressive Leaders Try to Cut Down the Nader Vote

Shaking in their boots at the thought of a Bush presidency, progressives are
starting to come out of the closet now and campaign for Gore. After all, in a
Bush presidency the oil companies will run our environmental policies, the
Supreme Court will reverse Roe v. Wade, and the NRA will run our gun policy.
And it's not even Halloween yet.

Washington Post Poll Shows Gore Back in the Race.

Was George W. Bush "Involved" in an Illegal Abortion?

__Washington Post Poll Shows Gore Back in the Race.

Once again, it's dead even. But the big "Mo," well maybe the little "Mo," is
moving in Al's direction today, which gives us all a sigh of relief. He is
regaining ground with independent women and other voter segments. Nader still
remains a problem, however, with 4% of the polling respondents supporting him.
http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63979-2000Oct23.html

__Al, We Love You Man, But You Got to Speak up About Bush's Record on Guns.

Here's Al's dilemma. In a few of the battleground states there are a number of
pro-gun union members that the Gore campaign is afriad of offending by bringing
up Bush's radical and deplorable pro-NRA record in Texas. However, by not
bringing up his support of gun control, Gore is probably losing women voters who
respond most strongly in polling to the gun control issue. Indeed, some polling
done by Peter Hart over the summer indicated that suburban women shifted in
double digits toward Gore when told the details of Bush's pro-gun record.
BuzzFlash.com proposes a speech for Al Gore that would establish him as a strong
leader on the issue of protecting American Families. We love you, Al, but
sometimes you just got to toss the micro-polling aside.
http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/Content

__Was George W. Bush "Involved" in an Illegal Abortion?

On CNN's Crossfire on October 20, Larry Flynt exploded a bombshell: that he has
evidence that George W. Bush was "involved in an abortion in Texas" in the early
1970's - when abortions were still illegal. Amazingly, CNN has censored its own
story by removing the entire transcript! We posted the relevant parts, but this
has all the markings of a cover-up by CNN - just like the cover-ups of Bush's
many other scandals, from going AWOL, to using illegal drugs, to corruption in
Texas government, to lying under oath. It looks like the Bush campaign has
people quietly removing evidence of Bush's many scandals. When will the media
wake up???
http://bushabortion.com

__Bush Gets an 'A' Rating and Endorsement from the NRA.

George W. Bush gave the NRA everything that they wanted in Texas. That is why
he merits their "A" grade. Gore on the other hand flunked out of his gun lobby
class, getting a bottom-of-the-barrel "F". (After click through, scroll to the
bottom of the NRA endorsement page.)
http://www.nrapvf.org/doj.html

__Our Man Bill Tells It Like It Is.

"This election ought to be a feast," Clinton said. "People should feel good
about it but sometimes it's harder to make a decision when times are good than
when they are bad." Could we have said it any better? We doubt it. Bubba Bill
is going to bat for Gore, and that's comforting to know just two weeks from
election day.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001023/pl/campaign_clinton_dc_6.html

__Rand Corporation Says Bush's Education 'Miracle' is a Myth

What could be more timely than this Rand Corporation report to be released on
Tuesday. According to a Reuters article: "The Texas education "miracle," hailed
by Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush as proof of his power in the
classroom, may well be a myth, according to a study to be released on Tuesday.
The study by the nonprofit RAND Corp., a private think tank, found that dramatic
increases in tests administered by Texas on its students are not reflected in
national exams of the same youngsters.
In fact, while Texas found the gaps in achievement shrinking between white and
nonwhite students, the national tests showed them actually increasing slightly
in some areas."
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001024/pl/bush_education_dc_1.html

__God Bless Molly Ivins.

Molly Ivins is like a reporter whose beat is the comings and goings of the Royal
Family. Except that the dynasty she covers is the faux pretenders known as the
Bush Clan. This is a patrician family that thinks elected office is their
birthright. Molly chronicles their foibles, incompetence and arrogance as no
one else can. This is what she has to say about Dubya today:"I like him myself.
But he is often clueless, he does not have a nice record, and the idea of
electing him president scares the living fantods out of me. I like my nephew, I
like my mailman and the lady at the dry cleaners. That doesn't mean they're
ready to be president."

__While Campaigning for Hillary, Bill Clinton Makes the Case for Gore.

Nobody says it better than Bill. While the Gore campaign is hesitant to run on
the record of the last eight years, Bill Clinton is not too shy to do a bit of
bragging. Al Gore should be saying the same thing to the American public.
Instead of giving the last eight years second billing, he should be shouting
about it from the roof tops. There is nothing to apologize for. It has been a
spectacular run. Compare it to the stock market crash, the savings and loan
scandal, and recession that occurred under Reagan/Bush.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/23/politics/23BILL.html

__This Weekend, the Washington Post Endorsed Gore

Al Gore has the right stuff according to the Washington Post. That's the reason
they endorsed Gore for President, not to mention that Bush doesn't have much of
any stuff.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A55041-2000Oct21.html

__If You are a Democrat Thinking about Voting for Nader, Think Again!

The 3-5% points that Nader is now polling is currently the spread in the polls
between Gore and Bush. If you are thinking of voting for Nader, think again.
We could give you a thousand reasons, but the thought of more Anton Scalias and
Clarence Thomases on the Supreme Court should be enough. Visit the "Greens for
Gore" website.
http://www.greensforgore.org/

__Nader May Set the Democratic/Progressive Agenda Back 10 Years by Helping Bush
Get Elected.

Based on this Weekend's polling, Nader is poised to swing six traditionally
Democratic states to Bush. Together they total a whopping 61 electoral votes,
which will, of course, ensure a Bush presidency. It makes you wonder if Nader is
being partially financed by the Bush campaign. Just asking.
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/X9RA076918013A62AB48

__The Bush Campaign Orchestrated the Smear Effort Against Gore.

The big smear campaign against Gore was a brilliantly cynical success. By
creating a false caricature of Gore as an exaggerator, the Bush campaign was
able to pull off the biggest deceit of presidential politics in recent history.
That is to say that the whole promotion of George W. as a candidate is based on
deceit and deception. By camoflouging the Bush campaign as supporting core
Democratic issues -- education, the environment, women -- Bush's people were
able to hide the fact that George W. is a light weight n'er-do-well who works
short days and has a few rooms for rent upstairs. By tarring Gore with the
image of an exaggerator, the Bush people hid the fact that their entire campaign
is based on one lie after another.
http://www.coxnews.com/2000/columnists/teepen/story3755.html

__If You Think Bush's "Suspension" of His Racist Health Commissioner Was Because
Dubya is Sensitive to Racial Issues, Think Again. He's Tolerated Bigots for a
Long Time.

Last May, BuzzFlash.com wrote a commentary highlighting Dubya's "compassion"
for bigots and racists that he has appointed in Texas. When he "suspended" his
Texas Health Commissioner last week for racist and bizarre comments, it was only
because the election is two weeks away. Notice that he did not fire Dr. Archer,
the lame brain brother of Rock Head Congressman Dick Armey, he only tucked him
away until after the election is over. As the commentary indicates, Dr. Archer
showed his bigot credentials more than once over the last three years -- and
Bush did nothing about it. That is until the election rolled around.
http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/content

__We've Got the Perfect Job for George W: Minor League Baseball Commissioner

The guy only wants to be president for two reasons: to get back at Clinton and
to show his parents that he's better than his brother Jeb. He would be much
happier greeting fans at baseball games. It also suits his casual attitude
toward work. So let's create the poition of minor league baseball commissioner
for George W. (Hey, we don't want to let him fun the major leagues. Baseball is
too important of an American tradition for Dubya to head the show.)

Heston Suggests Lynching Gore to NRA Members As They Get Out the Vote for Bush

It's Time to Bring on the Big Kahuna.

Dems Could Pick up Four House Seats in California

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tells it Like it is In Endorsement of Gore

___.COMMENT__________In Partnership with BuzzFlash.com___________

__Heston Suggests Lynching Gore to NRA Members As They Get Out the Vote for Bush

The rancid smell of a wealthy n'er-do-well who lets the hired help do his dirty
work is becoming an intolerable stench. Bush has long been the water boy for
the NRA, so much so that one of their Vice Presidents boasted that the gun
zealots will have an office in the West Wing if Bush is elected. Of course,
Dubya cries foul whenever this is brought up, as he did in the third debate.
But the raffish lord of the manor always becomes indignant when charged with
base cunning and hypocrisy. That's because he's hired thugs to beat up on his
accusers. That was Papa Bush's modus operandi when he let Lee Atwater run
roughshod over every ethical standard in his 1988 campaign against Dukakis. And
who rode shotgun with Lucifer Lee back in '88? Why it was good ol' George W.
Campaign hands at the time swear that they were two peas in the pod: Lee and
Dubya. Which brings us to the odious report from a Michigan paper that Charlton
"NRA" Heston suggested that Gore be lynched at a get out the vote rally for
Bush. Of cohttp://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/sub

__It's Time to Bring on the Big Kahuna.

Al, we love you man, but it's time to let the big dog loose. If the Democratic
core is not energized come election day, you will lose. Since your advisors
believe you can only bring up one or two issues (otherwise you will alienate one
group or another) your hands are apparently tied. So, in that case, let the big
kahuna do his thing. Bring on Bill to tell it like it is, and the Democratic
faithful will swarm to the voting booths like bees to honey.

__Dems Could Pick up Four House Seats in California

Yes, the Democrats might gain four house seats in California. That's great
news, because it will help Dems retake the House.
http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54291-2000Oct21.html

__Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tells it Like it is In Endorsement of Gore

In a cogent, incisive editorial, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution endorsed Gore.
The paper's editorial department put the rest of the brain-dead media to shame
with assessments like the following:"As long as the debate discussion followed
the script, so to speak, Bush proved capable of speaking in generalities and
memorized belief statements. When he was forced to venture out on his own,
however, when he was pressured to actually think about a response rather than
regurgitate a programmed reply, something troubling happened. All too often,
Bush's face and voice betrayed a nervous uncertainty that verged on panic. He
was intimidated, not by Gore, but by the situation."

With your help, the Smokingjet.com campaign is making a difference! Salon
Magazine gives Democrats.com credit for breathing life into the all-but-ignored
scandal over Bush's incomplete military service, and his repeated lies about it
on the campaign trail. "The issue of honesty, integrity and who's telling the
truth has been probably the most important issue Bush has used against Gore in
this campaign," Fertik says. "Bush says, 'I reported, I served my time.' Well,
if he's lying about something this fundamental that's an issue that should be
taken into account." This story proves that e-mailing reporters can make a
difference. So keep the pressure on the media by visiting www.smokingjet.com!

__Bush Supported Bigoted Health Commissioner Since 1997

Bush says look at my Texas appointees as examples of whom I would appoint as
President. God, are we in trouble then. The man that Bush wanted and supported
as Texas Health Commissioner has been a bigoted wacko since day one. But Bush
always backed his guy, that is until a couple of days ago. Now, trying to avoid
an election-eve embarrasment, Bush is temporarily distancing himself from a
doctor who has offended just about everyone over the past few years. Of course,
until now, Bush thought the guy, who happens to be Dick Armey's son no less, was
doing a fine job. It is appalling that half of the American electorate is
probably going to vote for a man as unprincipled as Bush.

__Take it From Molly Ivins: Bush's Nose is Growing Everyday

Molly Ivins knows the "Shrub" as well as anyone, and she thinks that he plays
fast and loose with the facts. There are other reasons that he shouldn't be
President, she says:
"I have thought since he first ran that George W. Bush was too light to be
governor of Texas. Frankly, I can't imagine why anyone would consider him for
president. He's not smart, he doesn't know much and he doesn't work hard."
http://www.star-telegram.com/columnist/ivins2.htm

__Dubya is Taking Us to the Cleaners

How do I count the ways that Dubya is disingenuous. There are the big whoppers,
like his lie about the last two years of National Guard Service that he never
fulfilled. Then there are the smaller fibs, like the one detailed here. For
George Bush, not telling the truth is like breathing air.
http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/sub

__Our Man Bill Tells it Like it is

Welcome back, Bill! Yesterday, the President said that he almost gagged when
Bush claimed to support a patients' bill of rights. Clinton mocked the GOP
presidential candidate and accused him of trying to cloud the real issues and
distort the accomplishments of the Clinton/Gore administration.

__Guess Who's Voting in Droves for Bush, the Gun Guys.

Remember that an NRA vice president has boasted that the pro-gun group will have
an office in the White House if Bush is elected. Now Charlton "Moses" Heston is
rallying the troops to turn out for the man who did them proud in Texas, Dubya.
The NRA says that George gave them everything they wanted in the Lone Star
State, including a law that allows people to carry handguns into churches and
hospitals.

__George Bush's Flights of Fancy

Democrats.com has been on a mission recently to smoke out George W. That's
because he has two years of missing National Guard service as was revealed in
the Democrats.com article, "The Smoking Jet. Unfortunately, the press has not
picked up on Bush's character problem: he lied about his stateside Guard
experience, lied on several accounts. Joe Conason writes about the issue in the
New York Observer. We hope that other journalists will soon follow suit. Bush
is getting away with rank deception, pure and simple.

__When it Comes to Bush and Social Security, Gore Says It's a Matter of Trust

What's a few trillion dollars off of budget here and there? Bush doesn't think

Well, stock up on the Malox. The race is still a deadheat. If more people knew

Texas. And don't forget to bring up that he's an exaggerator and fibber too.

__Thoughts on the Third Debate from a Democrats.com/BuzzFlash Reader

Hey, we're Democrats, so we're open to thoughts, comments and perspectives.
Theresa Kelly, one of our readers, e-mailed us her personal perspective on the
third debate. We thought that you would enjoy it.

__Robert Ray Attempts to Influence New York Senate Race

To call the action yesterday of Robert Ray unconscionable is to exercise
enormous restraint. In America, when a person is not tried, no prosecutor has
the right to declare him or her guilty. No prosecutor except Robert Ray. Unable
to prove in a court of law that Hillary Clinton had a role in TravelGate, unable
to find sufficient grounds to even try her, Ray smeared her in the press
yesterday by essentially claiming, "She's guilty, but I couldn't prove it."
This guy is shameless, partisan pond scum.

__Elections Will Cost at Least $3 Billion

Where is campaign finance reform when we need it. The Republican Presidential
candidate is the prime example of how money can make even the most talentless of
candidates look legitimate. Without all media tools available to re-package
candidates, maybe they would have to run on their records and talk straight with
the American public. In that case, Bush would lose by a landslide.

__Like the Mail Man, Al Delivers in Third Debate

At one point, Bush was so exasperated with Gore's tenacious emphasis on details
that he turned to Jim Lehrer for help. That's because Bush doesn't have any
details. George W. also showed last night that he can't answer any question his
handlers haven't scripted him for. On the other hand, Al was confident, strong,
knowledgeable, and in command of the town hall forum.
Last night Gore showed leadership and a masterful control of the issues. Bush's
appeal to voters boils down to dubious claims he makes that he will always tell
the truth and that he is a man of honor. Even if these self-evaluations were
true, which they aren't, that's not enough to get you elected president. Click
for the full transcript of the debate.
http://washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/onpolitics/elections/debatetext101700.htm

__Wednesday's Reuters/MSNBC Poll Indicates a 43/43 Percentage Point Tie

In a poll taken just before the third debate, Gore and Bush were tied in a
complete deadheat. As for the debate, this morning Gore said: ``The first was
too hot, the second was too cool, the third was just right.'' He is probably
buoyed by an ABC poll among Independents that chose Gore the winner of the third
debate by 47-33 percent. Even Bush voters were swayed in favor of Gore's
performance, according to another ABC poll.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001018/pl/campaign_gore_dc_378.html

__'Father' of the Internet Endorses Gore

Republican mockery aside, Al Gore did play the leadership role in Congress in
getting seed funding for the Internet. Because of his foresight and support of
the Net and advancements in new technology, the 'father' of the Internet
announced his support for Al. Well, George W. has the oil barons behind him.
We'll take the Internet backing, anyday.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20001016/pl/gore_dc_1.html

__Hillary is Looking Good in Senate Race

Now that the Subway Series is about to commence, Hillary is looking even
stronger in her race with Little Ricky. That is because the World Series between
crosstown rivals will dominate the media coverage and conversation of New
Yorkers for the foreseeable future. Since Hillary's already ahead, it is going
to be more difficult for Little Ricky to get attention and shift the
percentages. Ricky's going with the Mets, by the way, and Hillary with the
Yankees.
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/DailyNews/EMPIRESTAKES.html

__Carnahan's Death Complicates Chances of a Democratic Senate

Before his death in a plane accident the other evening, Govenor Carnahan was in
a neck-and-neck race against incumbent Senator John Ashcroft, a conservative of
gargantuan proportions. Because of the short time frame before the election,
however, there is not time for Missouri officials to remove Carnahan's name from
the ballot. In theory, if enough voters choose the deceased Democratic
candidate, which is allowable, the new Governor (Carnahan's Lt. Governor and a
fellow Democrat) will choose a person to fill the Senate seat. Unfortunately,
most pundits consider this hypothetical chain of events as unlikely. That means
6 more years of Ashcroft -- and a Republican Senate for at least another 2
years.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/18/politics/18SENA.html

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___The Final Lap: Gore will be Gore if you will be you

Happily, in the final debate Gore showed that he’s done permitting Bush to turn
the presidency into a race for class president. The aggressive and energetic
Gore is great at rallying voters and now is his chance to cut loose and go after
Bush. But the key to this late-breaking election is not really convincing the
“undecided” voters. The central fact that Democrats need to take to heart is
that more than half of the eligible voters are not going to make it to the
polls. If we want to win there is no action we can take that is more powerful
than taking time off during these three weeks of the campaign to make telephone
calls to Democrats.

__Democrats.com Doubles $1,000 Reward for Proof of Bush's Military Service

Democrats.com, an independent news and community site for America's 100 million
Democrats, today offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who can prove that George W.
Bush actually reported for duty with the Alabama National Guard in 1972. "We
applaud the effort by Vietnam veterans from Alabama to find out the truth about
Bush's failure to report for duty in Alabama, contrary to a specific order,"
said Bob Fertik, co-founder of Democrats.com. "To show our solidarity, we will
double the reward by offering an additional $1,000," he said.
http://www.smokingjet.com

__Well, the Final Debate is Here. Gore's Citizen Advisors Urge Him to be
Himself.

"Let Gore be Gore" seems to be the consensus of the Vice-President's citizen
advisors. After tonight's debate, conventional wisdom is going to have a field
day with handicapping the home stretch based on Tuesday's nights performances.
The consensus in the Gore camp is that the Vice President will come off as
confident and appropriately challenging. Let's hope that he nails Bush on his
lamentable record in Texas. That should wipe the grin off of Dubya's face.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/17/politics/17GORE.html

__Al We Love You, But It's Time to Call Bush's Bluff. Let America Know that the
Man's a Sham.

Sometimes a campaign gets in a rut when the consultants run the show, urging
caution and restraint. The problem with that approach is that it allows the
opposition to define you. In this election, the Bush operatives have
successfully created a caricature of Al Gore as an exaggerator. Bush, however,
is the grand dissembler and exaggerator extraordinaire. Almost nothing that he
says about his record is true -- and he regularly embellishes tales about his
personal life (including the anecdote that the birth of his daughters turned him
around, eventhough he admits he didn't sober up for another nine years).
Al Gore needs to take off the gloves and reveal the truth about George W. Bush.
Al, you owe it to us.
http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/Content

__Bush's Office Sat on Letter that Would Exonerate Two Men from Their Murder
Convictions

Bush's office sat on a letter of confession to a murder that would clear two men
rotting in a Texas prison. By all accounts, the murder case in question is
symbolic of the unfair, broken system of justice in the Lone Star State. It is
another example of how Bush lies about his record in Texas. Of course, when it
comes to a murder case, lives are at stake. Whenever that's brought up, it just
seems to bring a smirk to Bush's face. The guy does have a dark heart after all.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17829-2000Oct16.html

__Bush is Not a Friend to the Working Family. Anyone Surprised?

They say that Bush is the fifth most powerful decision maker in Texas, with the
oil and insurance companies coming in first and second. So it's no surprise
that he's no friend to the working men and women in America. On almost every
issue concerning unions, Bush is on the other side. Union members from Texas
are now touring the country to get the word out that a Bush presidency will be a
set back for working families.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/17/politics/17LABO.html

__Has Jim Lehrer Flubbed the Debates?

A lot of people think the PBS star has squandered his opportunity to ask sharp
questions and follow up on details. A vigorous, probing moderator would
especially help Gore, because Bush would probably have difficulty with going to
the detail level of any question. But Lehrer defends his soft ball style. Let's
put Sam Donaldson in there and stir up some dust.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/17/politics/17DEBA.html

__He's Unfocused and Adrift in Upstate New York

Little Ricky was supposed to have it more together than this. But he doesn't.
His campaign seems to be going in four directions at once. And Ricky has all the
charisma of a wet noodle when he addresses meetings of the faithful. That's
good news for Hillary, New York's next Senator.

__George Magazine Takes on Democrats.com - And Loses!

The cover story of George Magazine claims our expose about George W. Bush's
military record is "incorrect." So we went over every detail of their story, and
guess what? They're wrong and we're right! It's time for the press to start
asking Bush some hard questions about his last two years in the Air National
Guard - and time for Bush to stop lying.
http://www.democrats.com/display.cfm?id=157

__Holy Mackerel! Was Bush Caught Exaggerating Again?

Boy Scout George W., the man who regularly charges Gore with exaggerating, has
been caught making false claims about his Texas record, yet again. This time it
involves the amount of money Texas spends on healthcare for the poor. It seems
Dubya embellished his numbers a bit, take a few billion dollars here or there.
Oh that George W., he's such a knave. You got to love the exaggerating rascal.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/16/politics/16HEAL.html

__Alabama Vets offer $1,000 Reward for Proof that Bush Served There

Ten Jefferson County (Alabama) Vietnam veterans are offering $1,000 to anyone
with proof that Texas Gov. George W. Bush actually served in the Alabama
National Guard. Bush has insisted on numerous occasions that he reported for
duty in Alabama in 1972, but he can't produce any evidence or witnesses. "We
don't want anybody like that leading our country," veteran John Stewart said
Friday as nine other veterans surrounded him at Linn Park. "Not me as a
veteran."
http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/Oct2000/14-e414023b.html

__There He Goes Again: Lying and Exaggerating. That's George W. Bush We're
Talking About Folks, Just in Case You Wanted to Know.

As far as presidential candidates in the last half-century, George W. Bush takes
the cake on one thing. Never has there been a candidate whose rhetoric is so
flagrantly contradicted by his record in office. Bush bragged about his Texas
charter schools program in the October 3rd debate, for instance. Well, it turns
out that students in the Lone Star State charter schools score 20% below kids in
Texas public schools. Charter schools in Texas also close at twice the rate of
their counterparts in other states. It takes an underachiever like George W. to
boast about an underachieving school program. But the kids of Texas are the
ones who suffer as a result.
http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61276-2000Oct2.html

__Bush Campaign Concedes Texas at Bottom of the Barrel in Healthcare for Kids

How bad is the Govenor's Texas record when it comes to kids and healthcare?
It's about as bad as you can get. In fact, the Lone Star state ranks at the
bottom of the barrel. It has the third worst rate of kids with no health
insurance in the USA. So, forget all about Bush's stump speeches about how
important kids are to him. When it comes to healthcare and kids, Bush is a
regular Scrooge. Instead of more medical care for the children of Texas, he gave
tax breaks to the wealthy.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A6113-2000Oct13.html

__Russian Foreign Minister Might File Libel Suit Against Bush

Among the many falsehoods that Bush flung out in the debate, a former Russian
Foreign Minister took offense at one of them. In fact, the guy is so upset,
he's threatening to sue Dubya for libel. Can we speed this trial up? It would
be great to see George W. deposed. Who knows, he might even commit perjury in
such a case. Egads! Where is Kenneth Starr when we need him?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20001013/aponline095136_000.htm

__Pat Goes to Bed with the Anti-Gays in Vermont

Who is Pat going to bed with this week? Well, it's the Vermonters who are all
worked up in a lather about that state's historic "civil union" law. Pat plans
to spend some time up North showing his solidarity with anti-gay Vermonters.
Message to the farmers: while Pat's up there, lock up the cows. Just a
precaution.

__Bush Plays Fast and Loose with Death Penalty

Sometimes a man can get all bollixed up when he's talking about things that get
his mojo going. That might explain why George W. mixed up and messed up the
verdicts in a famous hate crime in Texas. Of course, George W. was trying to
show that there is no need for a hate crimes bill. In the end, he did just the
opposite. It was a defining moment in the last debate, for those who were
paying attention.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/13/politics/13DEAT.html

__Okay, So What if George's Second Debate Performance was a Triumph of Style
over Substance?

Well, George's response to a question about Lebanon might indicate cause for
concern. After all, he said that he supported a U.S. role in the war-torn
country that occurred in the Reagan administration. Bush and Cheney have mad a
big deal out of staying out of expeditionary missions, but George W. made an
exception for one of the worst foreign policy blunders the U.S. has implemented
in 20 years. What was he thinking?
http://www.tompaine.com/history/2000/05/15/1.html

__Bush Disses the Internet

During Wednesday's presidential debate, George Bush connected the Net and youth
violence -- demonstrating a deep misunderstanding of the reality of
techno-culture. It was also a profound political blunder: there are more
Americans turning 18 than ever before, and they now know that at least one
presidential candidate is an idiot.
http://slashdot.org/features/00/10/12/1625219.shtml

__Bush Exaggerates, Misinforms 16 Times in One Debate

George W. Bush is going to regret raising the "accuracy in debate" issue. At
last count, Bush was wrong 16 times in the second debate. This includes two
whoppers that may wind up in court. First, Bush's insistence that James Byrd's
killers will be executed - while that sentence is on appeal - may lead to the
overturn of that sentence. Second, Viktor Chernomyrdin says he will sue Bush for
saying that he "pocketed" IMF loans. In the next debate, Bush may want to put
those marbles back in his mouth.
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/3750/bush.htm

__Michigan Unions Working to the Bone for Gore

George W. may have the NRA minions as his foot soldiers, but Gore has the
unions. In the state of Michigan, the men and women of organized labor could be
the decisive factor in a Gore win. And if Gore wins Michigan, he may very well
win the election.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/13/politics/13LABO.html

__You Might Say that McCain is Not Doing Much of Anything for Bush

You might think that Dubya had bad body odor the way that McCain is keeping his
distance. With all the talk early on in the summer that John would be working
his butt off for Bush, McCain has been spending most of his time on the hustings
raising money for other GOP candidates. Perhaps he wants to make sure a lot of
Republican office holders owe him a favor or two. Then if Dubya loses, good 'ol
John will be around to pick up the pieces.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/13/politics/13MCCA.html

__How will the Mideast Crisis Affect the Campaign?

It's really anybody's guess, because no one can predict what the next stage will
be.
Conventional wisdom would be that the nation rallies around the current
administration in times when the U.S. is attacked. But in the last month of a
campaign, it is difficult to see how this tragedy will all play out.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A64220-2000Oct12.html

__Republicans Caught Spamming

'If anyone is seeking proof that the Bush camp doesn't have a clue about the
Net, this should about do it,' wrote one angry recipient of the RNC email in a
message to Wired News. 'This is SPAM, plain and simple. A fake source address, a
non-functional remove link, and a deceptive subject line. If it wasn't so funny
it would be sad that the RNC would either (a) be this stupid, or (b) be this
desperate.'
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0%2C1283%2C39404%2C00.html

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___Finding the Margin of Victory

With less than a month to go before Americans vote Bush is in a better position
than any Republican presidential candidate in a dozen years. Why?

In the simplest terms it is because Bush has learned to mask Republican policy
objectives behind gauzy, unspecific babble and get away with it. He is opposed
to effective gun control, but will not say so. He is opposed to measures to
address and correct environmental damage, but he will not say so. He is opposed
to ensuring that homosexuals cannot be attacked and intimidated with impunity,
but he will not say so. Downturns in the prospects of Texas oilmen provoke him
to use taxpayer funds to protect them while poor children without healthcare are
left to fend for themselves, but he will not say so.
There are a few actions left we can take to make sure we do not have to suffer
through George II’s on-the-job-training.

If Elected, Bush will Limit Women's Access to RU-486

Look Who Dick Hangs Out With

Tom DeLay is Doing His Dirty Work up in Michigan Now

___.COMMENT__________In Partnership with BuzzFlash.com___________

__Gore Was The Model Of Accuracy, While Bush Piled Mistakes Upon Distortions

Al Gore stuck to the facts last night, and Bush could not refute a single
statement he made. On the other hand, Bush told one whopper after another on
topics including hate crimes, trigger locks, the environment, Kosovo, Haiti,
Russia, and Iraq. The worst part of Bush's performance was the uninhibited joy
on his face as he described the execution of 3 (fact-police: only 2!) men. This
was reminiscent of the contemptuous way he mocked Karla Faye Tucker, the first
woman he executed, in a magazine interview. Bush's heart isn't dark - it's a
black hole.
http://algore2000.com/

__If Elected, Bush will Limit Women's Access to RU-486

The truth will out. A Bush spokesman has now made it official. George W. will
limit which women can have access to RU-486, directly contrary to his statements
in the first debate in Boston. Bush's favorite line is "I trust the American
people" - unfortunately, Bush (like his father, who appointed Clarence Thomas
and supported every effort to outlaw and restrict abortion) doesn't consider
women to be people.
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/abc/20001011/pl/20001011002.html

__Look Who Dick Hangs Out With

Trumpeted as the foreign affairs heavy on the Bush ticket, Dick Cheney has a bit
of a judgement problem. It seems that he cozied up to some of the world's top
tyrants in order to rake in more dollars for his oil company. Take a look at his
role in Burma, for instance.
http://www.corpwatch.org/feature/election/halliburton.html

__Tom DeLay is Doing His Dirty Work up in Michigan Now

Tom DeLay will rant and rave about alleged Democratic financial improprieties,
but the guy is using anonymous donations to run a below-the- radar operation in
support of a GOP candidate in Michigan's 8th District. According to the
Washington Post, "The Republican Majority Issues Committee, an independent group
associated with House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), has been working for
months to mobilize conservatives over such issues as abortion, guns and
gambling. Funded by anonymous donors and working outside the GOP establishment,
the committee is conducting polls, scrutinizing hunting license registrations
and other lists to identify potential supporters, running telephone banks and
bombarding the district with direct-mail solicitations."

__Help Us Tell the American People that Bush was AWOL!

On October 4, Democrats.com published an explosive article called "The Smoking
Jet" which reveals that George W. Bush was "AWOL" for the last two years of his
6-year service in the Air National Guard - directly contrary to his repeated
assertions that he "fulfilled his obligations." This absence followed his
grounding as a pilot - most likely the result of substance abuse. These issues
go to the heart of Bush's promises to strengthen the military, bring integrity
to the White House, and to tell the truth. We've tried to get the mainstream
media to pick up this story, but they are more interested in tearing down Al
Gore than in exposing the facts about Bush. So we're turning to you, our loyal
readers - help us bypass the pro-Bush media by contributing to our banner ad
campaign. Visit www.smokingjet.com!
http://www.democrats.com/display.cfm?id=132

__What's the Big Deal if Gore Sighs a Little?

For Pete's sake, let the guy sigh a little. When you have to listen to the
bilge water that comes out of Dubya's mouth, you're entitled to emit a few
sounds of frustration. The pundits are determined to fine tune every gesture
and inflection of Gore. That will certainly hamper his efforts to loosen up. Go
ahead, Al, let that sigh rip!
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/11/politics/11DEBA.html

__Bush Gets a Free Pass From Inquiring Minds

Nearly all of the examples of supposed prevarication by Mr. Gore—from Love Story
to Love Canal—have been effectively discredited. Still the slanders on Mr. Gore
persist, thanks to the Republican National Committee and certain eager media
accomplices, whose fidelity to facts is far less reliable than a Firestone tire.
http://www.observer.com/pages/conason.htm

__NRA Declares War on Gore

Charlton Heston, major domo and chief shill for the NRA, is leading his troops
into battle against Gore. Never mind the beer bellies and chewing tobacco, these
guys don't vote on any other issue but their guns. At least, that's the
conventional wisdom that the NRA wants you to believe. By any standards,

__The Bush Campaign Put A Blue Ribbon Committee of Educators Together, but Half

__Dick Gephardt's GOP Opponent Charged with Assault

If Dick Gephardt's opponent were, in a very unlikely scenario, to win the
minority leader's congressional seat, the GOP stalwart might spend his first
year in prison instead of Congress. That's because the guy assaulted a Gephardt
intern who was videotaping him, and then a short time later went on to assault a
TV camera man. The GOP Candidate's lawyer says that it was the right thing to
do. These Republicans are good at assaulting people. Remember what they did to
the President in the guise of justice.

__It Was a Golden Week for GOP Hypocrisy.

Last week was a golden week for GOP hypocrisy. There was so much of it going
around that it was, to quote George W. Bush, "gargantuan." And Dubya was right
up there at the top of the "A" list.
On Friday, Bush held a media event in which he announced a $2.7 billion
anti-drug program, chided the Clinton administration for being soft on drugs,
and promised "to turn back the tide of drug abuse." But a former cocaine user is
hardly the person to be lecturing the Clinton administration about its drug
policies. Especially, a former drug user who apparently missed two years of
national guard service because of his, shall we say, "little problem." Not to
mention that he drank booze like a fish until he was forty, nine years after he
claims that the birth of his twins turned his life around.
Bush might gain some credibility on this issue if he were to tell us about his
two missing years of National Guard Service (recently documented on
Democrats.com), when he was allegedly snorting a lot of toot. But then again, he
might not be able to recall the missing years at all. After all, as one of the
anti-drug commercials run by the Clinton administration tells us, cocaine
scrambles your brain into fried eggs.
http://www.buzzflash.com/BuzzScripts/Buzz.dll/Content

__Gore Campaign Questions Bush's Intelligence.

Finally, the Gore campaign is bringing up issues relevant to Bush's capacity to
govern. First on the list, can George W. conduct the business of the United
States or will Dick Cheney be pulling the strings behind the curtain?
Because, as the Gore people are finally saying outloud, George W. is a little
light in the loafers. That's something that should concern the American people.
Then again, Reagan got elected twice.
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/DailyNews/bush001009.html

__What's the Latest on the FBI Hunt for the Debate Tape Culprits?

If this story continues to develop, it could blow the whole campaign wide open.
The investigation into who sent the Bush debate tape to the Gore campaign is
picking up steam. The FBI focus remains firmly on the Bush campaign. It has
subpoenaed all sorts of records from Austin. Stay tuned. This one could be a
sizzler.
http://www.nytimes.com/2000/10/10/politics/10MOLE.html

__Have Some Fun. Look at the Electoral Map Today.

It's not good news, and it's not bad news. Forget the poll that showed Bush way
out ahead. Most polling is still showing the race a dead heat. And when push
comes to shove, it's about the same for the electoral map.
http://www.foxnews.com/elections/votemap/vote_map.html

__Pat's Back.

For entertainment value alone, it's great to see America's best known bigot back
in the saddle. We missed your hissing vitriol, Pat! Thanks for these new
anti-immigrant commercials. Hey, Pat, where were your ancestors from? Unless
you're a native American, they must have gotten off the boat at some point. Too
bad we couldn't have kept them out of the country. Now it's too late, and we're
stuck with you.

___Suffering Fools Gladly: Beating Bush in Round Two

Admit it: It is exciting to watch George W. Bush debate. You always have the
feeling that he is just about to melt down and start sprouting gibberish, which
he has been doing with increasing frequency on the campaign trail. The best
strategy for setting him off, and starting an irreversible downward spiral for
his campaign, is for Gore to keep his answers short and to the point and give
Bush plenty of time to fill. Bush is the student who hasn’t done the reading,
ignored the homework, and got by all year by getting the Dick Cheney’s of the
world to let him copy off of their exams. The best way of showing him up is
just to let him ramble on until he runs out of material.

__A Conservative Columnist Says Put a Fork in Bush, Gore Will Win the Election.

A conservative columnist for the Republican-endorsing Chicago Tribune says that
it is all over but the voting: Gore will win. Why? Well, this GOP cheerleader,
for one, believes that Dubya failed his debate test: "He came across like an
underprepared college student trying to bluff his way through an exam. The suit
seemed too big for the candidate, in more ways than one: For Bush to tell us
he's a leader is no substitute for sounding like one."

__Start Biting Your Nails, if You Haven't Already.

This election figures to be so close, a state like Iowa or maybe Wisconsin might
decide it. Never has so much time been spent by presidential candidates wooing
states with so few votes. That's how tight the race is looking on the electoral
map. You can expect Bush and Gore to keep eating a lot of cheese in Green Bay
for the next four weeks.

__Gore Campaign is Finally Putting on the Boxing Gloves.

Democrats who have patiently waited for the Gore Campaign to show some fight
will finally be rewarded. Ads will shortly begin running educating the public
about Bush's dreadful record as Governor on the issues he is championing,
including education and health. These aren't attack ads; they are a public
service. It's about time!

__Bush Says "Drugs Rob People of Their Dignity": He Should Know

Of all the brazen hypocrisy that the Bush campaign has dished out, this one
takes the cake. Given the mile high pile of manure that Dubya is sitting upon,
it has to be a big one to stink more than the rest of the heap. George W. Bush,
who apparently took cocaine while in the National Guard to the extent that he
wouldn't take a medical test at the time and missed two years of service, is now
lambasting the Clinton administration for not doing enough to stop drug use. It
is hard to understand how half of the voting public can let someone get away
with such shameful hypocrisy. The Republicans would be all over a Democrat who
tried to get away with such a stunt. What are we waiting for?

__Senate Republicans Block Tire Safety Bill

Isn't it great how Bush and so many Republican candidates are trying to sound
compassionate and concerned this year? Don't buy a word of it. "Unnamed" GOP
senators are holding up a bill that would hold tire manufacturers more
accountable for their products, like the Firestone tires on the Ford Explorer.
Allegedly, the Republicans are doing it at the request of the tire industry. If
you own a car and value your life, you're a fool to vote for a Republican.

__Paula Jones Bares All for Penthouse as Clinton Disbarment Efforts Continue.

Paula Jones, the woman at the epicenter of the Clinton impeachment efforts, is
reportedly going to get naked for Penthouse magazine. All the right wing groups
and the Ken Starr legal thugs championed Jones as a wronged innocent. It was a
sham from the outset. Since that infamous period when the right wing
unsuccessfully tried for a legal coup d'etat, Jones divorced her protective
hubby and is now going to display her fleshy gifts for all to see. The
Republicans are great for creating grand farces. Alas, when it involves an
attempt to overthrow an elected President, it's not a farce; it's a troubling
tragedy. The co-conspirators of the right who hatched the Jones-Starr alliance
are now the ones who should be investigated. There's no longer Paula's modesty
to hide behind.

__After Eight Years, Clinton Turns Reflective.

Our Big Kahuna, our Chairman of the Board, who is also known as President of the
United States, is getting reflective in the last months of his term. A big
regret he has: not achieving healthcare reform. A big accomplishment he cites:
holding off the impeachment onslaught. Most of the Republicans who took Bubba
Bill on have fallen by the political wayside. But Clinton is still standing
tall, for which he deserves our admiration. The GOP zealots tossed more
artillery at him than was used in the Vietnam War. In the end,
he won, and they lost.

__NY Governor Pataki Attacks Hillary for Quoting E.B. White

The Governor of New York went to Yale, just like George W. Bush. And like
George W., he apparently didn't get much out of his Ivy League education. As a
post-debate spin doctor for Little Ricky Lazio, the Governor chided Hillary
Clinton for quoting from E.B. White. Pataki mispronounced his name as Wyatt and
didn't know that he was from New York or that White had written for the New
Yorker. In fact, White grew up just a few miles from Pataki in upstate New
York.

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___Clinton-Lazio II: Stick to the High Road

Over the next four weeks until the election, New Yorkers will be awash in ads,
with the air war ground-rules agreed to by the candidates observed only in the
breach. Mrs. Clinton will win if the discussion remains focused on the issues
that have given her the lead: economic assistance for upstate, prescription drug
benefits, defense of reproductive rights, etc. But efforts to distract her from
the issues will challenge her focus and resolve. The high road is a hard road,
but, for Mrs. Clinton, it is the road to ride to victory next month.

__Government funds had EVERYTHING to do with Cheney's income

Republican Vice Presidential candidate Dick Cheney says the government had
nothing to do with his business success. The record shows, however, that Cheney
used his political connections to more than double the amount Haliburton gets
from Uncle Sam than it did before he started there, and that it doubled its
political contributions at the same time

__Debate Coaches Declare Lieberman the Winner.

Joe got the nod of the debate coaches on Thursday night. But a couple of them
found the confrontation too tame. "Both men were too impersonal, humorless, dull,"
the judge said. "Even just one groan would have helped."

__As of Friday, Gore Holds a 5-Point Lead in Tracking Poll.

If the election were held now, Gore would probably win and the Democrats would
control the House of Representatives. That's the good news coming from the
latest Reuters/MSNBC tracking poll. Also worthy of note: Nader has gained a bit
in the last few days, now up to 6 percent. That could hurt Gore in hotly
contested states.

__It Pays to be a Republican When It Comes to Ethical Lapses.

Spending thousands of dollars on lavish meals, letting lobbyists pay for his
travel and expenses, letting a lobbyist have use of his office, misusing
campaign funds -- these are but a few of the ethical lapses of Republican
Transportation Chairman Bud Shuster (PA). Yes, he got a slap on the wrist from
the House Ethics Committee, but they didn't call for a house vote on his
"serious official misconduct." The guy's as sleazy as they come, but the
Republicans let him off lightly. If he were a Democrat, the Congressman would
have been burned at the stake by now.

__House GOP Leaders Kill Hate Crimes Bill: Have They No Justice?

Tom DeLay and his thugs killed a hate-crimes bill that would have extended
coverage to crimes motivated by sexual orientation, gender or disability. Don't
expect George Bush to chastise his cohorts on the Hill. You know whose side he
is on.

__Little Ricky's Defining Moment May be Behind Him, And it Might Just Cost Him
the Election.

The irrepressible Ricky Lazio may look back on his first debate with Hillary as
a football player looks back at the video of a championship game in which he
fumbles the ball on the two-yard line. When he stalked toward Hillary and
shoved a piece of paper toward her, he was every woman's image of an aggressive,
menacing male. You can't erase those sort of feelings once they are aroused.
Next time, his handlers will put a leash around his neck and just yank when he
starts walking toward his opponent.

__Did Bush Use Fuzzy Math to Attack Gore?

Poor George W! All those numbers confuse him when Papa Bush is not there to help
him with his math. Anyway, when you're a Bush, you don't really need to learn
to add, just call up the accountant. The Washington Post points out that Dubya
used some fuzzy math of his own last Tuesday night. Anybody surprised?

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___Lieberman and Cheney Face Off: What is that giant sucking sound?

Ross Perot promised us that NAFTA would produce a “giant sucking sound” of jobs
moving to Mexico. Well it turns out that the sound and the direction are about
right, but the source is Dick Cheney embarassing all of us by sucking up to his
titular superior and intellectual inferior, George W. Bush. Watching Cheney try
to make us believe that George W. Bush is qualified to be president of the
United States is one of those awful vulgar spectacles that you can’t help but
watch, even though it makes you squirm.

Those post-debate instant polls may not have any science behind them, but the

ardent Democrats to go to these key news sites after the debate and make your
support for Joe Lieberman known to the world:

__The Smoking Jet: Bush's Military Record Reveals Grounding and Absence for Two
Full Years

In its first major investigative report, Democrats.com has revealed that George
W. Bush was mysteriously suspended from flight with two years left in his
military service, and never again reported for a single day of duty, contrary to
two direct orders.

__What Would Dubya be if He Weren't a Bush? Part II

Well, we had so many irresistable entries in our BuzzFlash/Democrats.com contest
that we are posting another one. This entry tells the tale of Bush as a
ne'er-do-well from the backwoods. It begins, "If George Dubya wasn't born a
Bush, I am certain that he would be the youngest member on the "Dead Pecker
Bench" at a county court house somewhere in the depths of Texas. There he'd sit,
spittin', whitlin' and spinnin'yarns of his high school party animal
exploits..."

__Did Bush Prove that He's Not too Dumb to be President?

While most of the pundits analyzed the debate in terms of perfomance, as if the
debates were a test of one's demeanor, we are still left asking the key
question:In the debate, did Bush prove that he isn't dumb? No, he didn't.

__Bush Draws Ire of Pro-Choice Advocates.

Bush either has a head full of "fuzzy math" or a mouth full of flip-flops.
Pro-choice advocates are furious that Bush was dishonest in the debates about
his position on the RU-486 pill. The man just can't be trusted.

__The Polls May Show a Tight Race, But Gore has an Edge on the Electoral Map.

On the Map of states, Bush is on the defensive. The polls may be tight, but
Gore is ahead in states solidly for him or leaning in his direction. Bush is on
the defensive in several key states, including Florida. Almost every analyst
agrees that if Bush loses the Sunshine State, he loses the election.

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___Bush Debate Performance: Safe on First

In his first at bat in the majors George W. managed to connect with the ball a
few times, but he didn't fall down or commit major errors. So as presidential
politics is now scored, he gets credit for a grand slam. How have we permitted
our expectations of candidate performance to be driven so low?

___The VP Debate: My Insurance Policy is Better Than Yours

Tonight Joe Lieberman gets his chance to show the American people he is ready to
be president. The vice presidential sideshow is mostly entertainment but for
that one crucial fact. If Lieberman is smart – and you can count on that –
he’ll just gingerly step around Cheney and not let him get in the way of his
dialogue with the American people.

__It's Gore in Round One, First Poll Shows.

In round one of the heavyweight championship for leader of the free world, Gore
won by decision. Although no knock out blows were delivered, Gore beat Bush in
the first flash poll on the debate.

__Head of Major Right Wing Anti-Clinton Legal "Foundation" Arrested on Indecency
Charges.

Matthew Glavin, president and CEO of the Southeastern Legal Foundation,
has been charged with public indecency in a National Park. The
Southeastern Legal Foundation has been virulently anti-Clinton. The
"Foundation" is behind the effort to disbar Clinton and files frivolous
lawsuits aimed at discrediting the President. More significantly, the
Southeastern Legal Foundation has been at the forefront of right wing
groups attacking Clinton as indecent and immoral. Glavin stands accused of
fondling himself and a police officer in the Chattahoochie National River Park,
just east of Atlanta. Because his indecent behavior occurred in a National
Park, he will be tried in a Federal Court.

So much so that the NRA is boasting that it will have an office in the West Wing

has allowed criminals to carry handguns in the Lone Star State. Moreover, more
than 3,000 "law abiding" handgun toters have been arrested for a variety of
crimes. You might say that George W. not only supports a law that results in
more shootings, he doesn't do a good job of enforcing the law either.

Get in the swing with the latest Republican fad, the "Slim Cheney" rap dance.

Democrats.com Investigation of George W. Bush's Military Record Reveals
Bush was Grounded and Absent for Two Full Years

"I think that people need to be held responsible for the actions they take
in life. I think that's part of the need for a cultural change. We need to
say that each of us needs to be responsible for what we do." George W.
Bush in the first Presidential debate, 10/3/00.

In its first major investigative report, Democrats.com has revealed that
George W. Bush was mysteriously suspended from flight from flight with two
years left in his military service, and never again reported for a single
day of duty, contrary to two direct orders.

Democrats.com, which launched at the Democratic convention in August, is
the first major news and community site for America's 100 million
Democrats.

The article, written by Retired Air National Guard pilot veteran 1st Lt.
Robert A. Rogers, is the first independent investigation of Bush's
military record by a former Air National Guard pilot. It is based on 160
pages of documents recently obtained from the Air Force Archives under the
Freedom of Information Act.

Robert A. Rogers is a self-employed Northern Virginia businessman and an
Air National Guard veteran of eleven years, 1954 through 1965. After this
he had a 30-year career in the commercial airline industry, including
independent consulting with various US Government civilian agencies and
military services.

The article, entitled "The Smoking Jet: Bush's Military Record Reveals
Grounding and Absence for Two Full Years", reveals three key issues about
Bush's military service.

1. Pilot George W. Bush did not simply "give up flying" with two years
left to fly, as has been reported. Instead, Bush was suspended and
grounded, very possibly as a direct or indirect result of substance abuse.

2. The crucial evidence – a Flight Inquiry Board – that would reveal the
true reasons for Bush's suspension, as well as the punishment that was
recommended, is missing from the records released so far. If no such Board
was convened, this raises further questions of extraordinary favoritism.

3. Contrary to Bush's emphatic statements and several published reports,
Bush never actually reported in person for the last two years of his
service – in direct violation of two separate written orders. Moreover,
the lack of punishment for this misconduct represents the crowning
achievement of a military career distinguished only by favoritism.

This in-depth investigation and analysis of Bush's apparent misconduct
over the last two years of his six-year obligation suggests that Bush did
not fulfill all of his military obligations to the Texas Air National
Guard and to his country, contrary to his repeated assertions.

Moreover, Bush's misconduct could have resulted in significant
disciplinary action by his Commanding Officer, ranging in severity from
temporary or permanent grounding, a career-damaging letter of reprimand,
to forced reenlistment in the US Army (including active duty in Vietnam),
to a dishonorable discharge, all the way to the most remote possibility, a
court-martial.

These issues are not trivial, nor are they ancient history. This cloud of
questions goes to the heart of George W. Bush's promises to restore honor
and integrity to the White House, to strengthen the military, and to speak
the plain truth on the campaign trail.

If Bush had been court-martialed, or merely dishonorably discharged, it is
safe to say that he would not be the Republican candidate for President
today. But the absence of any sign of severe disciplinary action in the
records we obtained raises serious questions that can only be answered if
Bush himself requests the release of his full military service record.

more shootings, he doesn't do a good job of enforcing the law either.

__What Would Dubya be if He Weren't Born a Bush?

"Well, you tell us what Dubya would be today if he weren't propped up by money
and a blueblood family name." That was the challenge we posed to BuzzFlash and
Democrats.com readers for a contest that ended on Friday, September 29. From the
many responses we received, our man Dubya clearly would not have fared very well
financially or otherwise if he hadn't been born a Bush. Heck, he was an utter
failure as a businessman in real life, until Papa's friends staked his share in
the Texas Rangers. So it isn't surprising that our readers thought that Bush,
born to a poorer family, might have ended up as a Wal-Mart greeter, TV
evangelist, used car or aluminum siding salesman, bartender, dirt farmer,
Vietnam Vet (or killed in Vietnam), "bush league" baseball manager, or an inmate
in a state prison (for drug charges). Oh, and we almost forgot: Jethro from the
Beverly Hillbillies.

__Marilyn Manson, Minister of the Chruch of Satan, Supports Bush.

Hey, forget about any criticisms of Gore for not being hard enough on Hollywood.
Marilyn Manson, the macabre rock star, is throwing his support to George W.
We'd like to see the photo op of the endorsement news conference.

__Pat Buchanan Claims that at Least God is on His Side.

With his pitchfork brigade reduced to a ragtag group of hardcore bigots and
reactionaries, Pat is claiming that he has the "big one" on his side. But is it
God or the guy with horns and a tail that's backing you, Pat? Our bet is that
it's the devil that made him do it.

__Lieberman Says that He Will Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee in
Thursday's Debate.

Will Joe do a little rope-a-dope with Dick Cheney in their debate? Lieberman is
feeling spry and confident, agile and knowledgeable. Will the decision go to
the bantam contender in round one?

__After a Kick in the Butt from Pat Robertson, Bush Decides to Address Christian
Coalition

George W. is trying so hard to appear moderate, he was even going to avoid
speaking at the Christian Coalition Conclave. After poor Dubya got beat up with
an ugly stick over his infamous visit to Bob Jones U., his handlers wanted to
avoid another photograph of him with his right wing supporters. But Pat
Roberston felt snubbed and let the Bush Campaign know it. The compromise is
that Georgy Boy will address Robertson's followers via a videotape. It must be
difficult for Bush. To get elected, he has to avoid his friends for awhile.

__Convicted Felon and Quack is Big Dollars Supporter of the Brothers Bush.

Oh, how George W. likes to play the integrity card. Of course, that comes with
being a Bush, not that you have to act with integrity. It's enough to have it
in your bloodline, like some royal family gibberish. Well, one of the big bucks
supporter of the Brothers Bush is a quack who George W. and Jeb promoted as an
innovator in alternative medical care for seniors. If you are over 50, Bush may
be dangerous to your health. Trust us. We have integrity.

__Bush is Back to Putting His Controversial Tax Cut Center Stage.

Even though many of his fellow Republicans are openly critical of his deep tax
cut proposal, George W. has once again put the ruinous idea center stage. It
makes you wonder what sort of polling results his campaign handlers are seeing.
George, why don't you promise seniors free prescriptions? Now that would be an
idea worth pursuing.

__Gore Two Points Ahead in Latest Poll, But Bascially a Dead Heat

Forget about the polls until after the first debate, even if Gore was ahead for
a day. Basically, it's a dead heat going into the first mano-a-mano
confrontation between Al and George W. Meanwhile, the Bush camp is playing the
game of lowering expectations. That way if George just gets out with his hide
intact, they will declare victory.

__The 'Debate TapeGate' May Eclipse the Actual Debate.

With the real debates about to begin, all eyes are focused on Austin.
That's because the real debate may be about who is behind the purloined
Bush debate prep tapes. Whoever it is may be getting a bit nervous by
now. What started out as a simple inquiry is now a full blown FBI
investigation. Computers are being seized, correspondence examined, and
video monitoring tapes reviewed. In a sure sign that the FBI is making
headway, the chief target of the investigation has hired a lawyer. But
word is out that the FBI is looking down the road at catching some fish on
their hook, not just an administrative assitant minnow. Will it reach Karl Rove
or will some junior staffer take the rap for him?

__In Debates, Gore Goes for the Soft Underbelly of His Opponents.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, Al Gore may have the greater challenge in this
week's debate. After all, no one expects much of George W. But Gore has to
come off as Presidential but not patronizing, smart but not smarmy, and
articulate but not glib. A Washington Post analysis of his past debate
performances indicates that he is well prepared for the big one.

___.COMMENTARY____________________________________________________

___Gore's Olympic Debate Challenge

George W has by far the easier task in tomorrow night's debate. All he has to
do is complete the course without falling down. Gore has by far the harder task
since it is so hard to fit substance through such an insubstantial medium

__Enter the Democrats.com/BuzzFlash.com Contest: What Would Bush be if He Wasn't

That's right, Democrats.com and BuzzFlash.com are jointly sponsoring this
exercise in wit. George W. Bush was a n'er-do-well in his academic, personal and
business life until some friends of Papa Bush financed his stake in the Texas
Rangers. It is pretty clear that if George W. wasn't born with a silver spoon in
his mouth, he'd be...well, a grease jockey at a Jiffy Lube, for instance. Or a
recovering alcoholic selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door. First place gets you
a $100 gift certificate to an e-tailer..

__Embarrassing Cheney Story 3,007

In 1975, as an apparatchik in the Ford administration, Dick Cheney successfully
urged a hike in oil prices. Of course, that meant consumers paid more. But,
what's the problem, Cheney's oil baron friends made out like bandits. That's
what friends are for.

__In Regards to 'Debate Tape Gate,' Come on, We Know Your People Did it George.
Just Fess Up.

In the latest "Debate Tape Gate" development, the FBI is zeroing in on an aide
in the Bush campaign. Meanwhile, Bush's people are getting edgier by the minute,
claiming that the FBI is biased and unreliable. Who do they think is fair, the
KGB? This is a Bush dirty tricks caper from the word 'Go.'

__Bush Missed a Year of Guard Duty: Not a Role Model for 'GI Joe'

Earlier this year, the Boston Globe published an exhaustively researched article
on a year that George W. was missing from National Guard Duty. A new report in
TomPaine.com from a citizen researcher shows that Bush showed up for duty only
one day in that year. Dubya sure is a man of character, as Papa Bush readily
declares. The only problem, Papa, is not's the kind of character that you would
want in the fox hole with you. Your son would be AWOL in a second, as he was
for a year of his so-called military service.

__Martin 'West Wing' Sheen Takes on Bush's Pro-Gun Record.

Behind all the smoke and mirrors that the Bush campaign has thrown up, George W.
is still an unrepentant conservative. Take the gun issue, for example. Bush is
locked at the hip with the NRA. The guy even signed a bill allowing handguns in
churches and hospitals. Martin Sheen puts Bush's dreadful pro-gun record in the
crosshairs in a new ad from Handgun Control Incorporated.

__Now, It's Down to Mole Hunting.

When a campaign starts criticizing the FBI, as Bush's minions have been doing,
you know they're guilty. The wagons are circling in the "Debate Tapegate"
scandal. The investigation is focusing on an employee of a Bush consultant. When
the dust settles, you can bet the Bush campaign is going to have some explaining
to do.

__He Doesn't Only Have a Problem with the Word 'Subliminal.'

Our man George W. actually has a problem with several words. Take "voucher" for
instance. On a campaign swing through California, Bush never mentioned the word,
even though he has been an ardent supporter of the concept. Could it be that the
man who says he never waffles is playing it both ways, given that vouchers are a
political hot potato? That's George W. for you, a man of his word, a man of
integrity!

__Hillary Hits the 50% Threshold for the First Time.

For the first time, Hillary has pierced the elusive 50% mark in New York State
polls. Many pundits trace her recent rise to Little Ricky Lazio's bullying
performance in the first debate. If his spin consultants have their way, expect
the Rickster to be a powder puff in the second debate, a little gentleman. Yeah,
right, sure.

__Internet Rumor Swirls Around that Cheney Will Jump Off the Ticket.

Please Dick, don't jump! We need you desperately. You are more fun than Dan
Quayle and a barrel of laughs. What would Leno and Letterman do without you? As
for us, we would be forlorn, stripped of our daily chuckle over your latest
embarrassment if you jumped ship. So, please, please, say it ain't so!

__Joe is the Man of the Moment: Equally at Ease with His Faith and Himself

With Joe Lieberman on the ticket, the Democrats get a man who is comfortable
with his faith and himself. With an ever-present sense of humor, he is charming
crowds in key states. No one has to tell Lieberman to be Lieberman. What you
see is what you get, and that's a big boost for the Dems.

__Did a Bush Advisor Set-up Al Gore?

"Debate Tape Gate" might appear to be getting more confusing by the day, with
all the finger pointing and all. But when the dust settles, count on the Bush
campaign being fingered for a dirty trick. The debate tape mailing has the
figurative, if not literal, fingerprints of Bush Svengali Karl Rove on the
envelope. And let's not forget that Dubya himself rode shotgun with Lee Atwater
in Daddy's '88 campaign. They were two peas in a pod, people say, good 'ol Lee
and George W.

__Texas is Eighth Worst State When It Comes to Poverty.

According to U.S. Census data, Texas, under George W., rose from 10th-highest
poverty rate to 8th. Maybe that's why Dubya is so eager to move out of the
Governor's mansion. A couple more years of his leadership and the Lone Star
State might hit the number one spot when it comes to poverty.

__Desperate to Win, Bush Becomes the Prophet of Doom and Gloom.

He started off as the man on the horse who would bring a new day to Washington.
Now he's just another whining Republican, yelping that the sky is falling.
Given the strong economy, it must be desperation that's driving Dubya to start
pulling the fire alarm. It's a prank that he probably tried when he was in prep
school, but it may not work when he's running for President.
