Kostunica: Too much extremism in Kosovo
December 19, 2000
Belgrade, December 18 (Tanjug) - President of FR of Yugoslavia Vojislav
Kostunica has urged, today, during a joint press conference with Norwegian
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, who is visiting the Balkan region,
a dialogue with the representatives of the international community and
the moderate leaders of the Kosovo Albanians.
Kostunica said that "there is too much extremism in Kosovo" despite
the victory of the moderate ethnic Albanians at former local elections
in Kosovo and Metohija.
Describing the current situation in southern
Serbia as "a very serious problem", President of FRY said that there are
certain unclear interpretations of the Military-Technical Agreement, signed
last June in Kumanovo, and under which the local Serbian police in the
land security zone can be armed only with light weapons.
That agreement must be amended, Kostunica thinks, adding that this does
not depend on Yugoslavia but on KFOR and the international community.
The international community and KFOR bear the great responsibility,
because they allowed terrorists to enter the zone from Kosovo, instead to
create the real land security zone, Kostunica stressed.
Yugoslav President expressed great satisfaction over the visit by the
Norwegian president, Jens Stoltenberg, and pointed out that Norway was
one of the first countries to recognize the democratic changes in
Yugoslavia.
During today's meeting, according to Jens Stoltenberg, they focused on
the implementation of the joint declaration, on bilateral relations and
cooperation signed during Kostunica's visit to Oslo in October.
According to him, possibility of development of joint economic projects,
especially in the field of telecommunications and energy substances, in
other words, in production and transmission of electric power should be
discussed especially in the future.
