U.S. Forces in Kosovo Patrolling to Prevent Guerrilla Movements

WASHINGTON, Nov 29, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) U.S. forces are
actively patrolling to prevent Albanian guerrillas from crossing into the
Presevo
Valley from Kosovo, the Pentagon said Tuesday, praising Yugoslav President
Vojislav Kostunica for seeking a peaceful solution to the hostilities there.

Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said the situation in the Presevo Valley,
which borders the U.S. sector in Kosovo, was "much calmer today than it was
several days ago," when Albanian guerrillas seized a village and killed three
policemen.

"The U.S. forces in that area have not increased their presence along the
border,
but they are very actively patrolling both on the ground and in the air," he
said.

"They have been carrying out very careful checkpoint operations. They have
intercepted some shipments of arms. And they have prevented some people --
alleged guerrillas -- from going into the Presevo Valley from Kosovo," Bacon
said.

He said the Pentagon was pleased that both sides were observing a cease-fire
and that Kostunica had called for a peaceful solution to the crisis.

"We think that the activities by the guerrilla groups are damaging to the
progress
that we've made in Kosovo and certainly damaging to stability in the region," he
said.
