Five dead in gunbattle in northern Albania

TIRANA, Nov 28 (AFP) -

Five people including a police officer were killed and several others injured in
an exchange of gunfire
in the northern Albanian town of Tropoja, Tirana police chief Bilbil Mema said
Tuesday.

"A group of bandits attacked the police precinct and many other institutions
including the tribunal,"
Albanian Prime Minister Ilir Meta told AFP.

Meta said the attackers were supporters of opposition leader Sali Berisha, who
disputes the results
of last month's municipal elections in which his Democratic Party lost to the
ruling Socialists.

Police said the fighting was continuing in front of the police station.
