Kostunica addressed UN and NATO officials
November 27, 2000
Vienna, November 27th - Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica said in Vienna
today that he had contacted top UN and NATO officials, demanding immediate
changes to regulations related to the presence of Serbian security forces in
a zone bordering with Kosovo, in which several policemen have been killed by
ethnic Albanian terrorists.
Kostunica went on to say that he had written to NATO Secretary General
George Robertson and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to point to serious
ambiguities in the military-technical accord signed in June 1999. It
regulates the deployment of peacekeeping troops in the Serbian
Kosovo-Metohija province, envisaging also the establishment of a 5-km
security zone.
In a statement to media in Vienna, Kostunica said that the Serb population
in the Presevo valley was subject to ethnic cleansing by ethnic Albanians
from the province. He added that only a small unit of lightly armed police
remained in the area, facing heavily armed terrorist groups during patrols.
Emphasizing that the Yugoslav government was strictly abiding by the accord,
Kostunica reiterated that it was establishing cooperation with major
international institutions. He added that he wanted a dialogue with Ibrahim
Rugova, the leader of ethnic Albanians in the province.
