Serbian-ethnic Albanian talks are necessary
November 27, 2000
Belgrade, November 25 (Tanjug) - President of FRY Vojislav Kostunica
has enjoined on ethnic Albanian Democratic League of Kosovo leader
Ibrahim Rugova the need for opening Serbian-ethnic Albanian talks, and
expressed confidence that a solution could be found.
"For lasting peace and a stability in Kosovo, which must remain a
multi-ethnic community, a substantive dialogue between the two largest
ethnic communities - Albanian and Serbian is necessary. No solution
imposed from outside would bring anything good either to Kosovo or to
Serbia, Yugoslavia or yet the Balkans as a whole", Kostunica said in a
message of condolences to Rugova on the murder this week of his close
associate and friend Xhemail Mustafa.
In the message, a copy of which has been submitted to Tanjug today,
President of FRY stressed: "Because of that, I think that it is necessary to
start negotiations, convinced that a solution could be found. It is not worth
papering over a problem. We must fight against it. And it should be done
as soon as possible. Too much time has already passed".
In the message, Kostunica condemned all forms of terrorist activity,
whomever it might target.
"Obviously, violence in Kosovo and from Kosovo is spreading again. This
wave of violence, whose victims in the past few days has been four Serbs
and one ethnic Albanian, must be checked primarily by NATO and the
United Nations, which have undertaken to do so under the Kumanovo
military-technical accord and the U.N. Resolution 1244. They, however,
if they truly wish to, can stop the violence", but for a lasting peace and
stability in Kosovo and Metohija, it is necessary to open Serbian-ethnic
Albanian dialogue, according to the President of FRY.
