Cook condemns Kosovo killing
Robin Cook, the Foreign Secretary, tonight condemned an
outbreak of violence in the former Yugoslavia, which has seen the
murders of a Serbian official and a close aide to a Kosovo
Albanian leader over the past 48 hours.
In the latest incident, a close aide to moderate Kosovo Albanian
leader Ibrahim Rugova was shot to death in the stairwell of his
apartment building in an attack signaling an increase in
politically-motivated violence in the province.
Xhemajl Mustafa, adviser to Mr Rugova, the leader of the
Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), had also been an
outspoken journalist. His wife was with him at the time of the
shooting, but was reportedly uninjured.
Mustafa, who headed the Kosovo Information Center, was taken
to Pristina hospital where he died of his wounds.
Jack Covey, the deputy head of the UN mission in Kosov, said:
"The murder of an LDK political adviser the day before a regional
summit discussing co-operation is a dark sign for Kosovo."
Mr Rugova's Democratic League of Kosovo defeated leaders of
the former rebel Kosovo Liberation Army in municipal elections
last month. International officials had expressed concern at the
time that some of the losers in that election may not abide by the
results.
