KFOR News Update
Pristina, 23 November 2000
by Flight Lieutenant Mark A Whitty, KFOR Spokesman

Personnel Detained; Weapons Found

Yesterday morning, KFOR Task Force 1-36 Infantry detained 10 personnel
attempting to bypass Checkpoint Sapper and re-enter Kosovo from the Ground
Safety Zone. The individuals were wearing black uniforms and were not carrying
weapons. They were detained and transported to camp Bondsteel.

Early yesterday afternoon, KFOR Task Force 1-36 Infantry stopped and searched
a truck driven by a Kosovar Albanian man attempting to go to Dobrosin. During
the
search, the soldiers found 21 RPG rounds, two RPG launchers, three anti
personnel mines, 10 rifle grenades, 29 grenades, eight mortar rounds, one
12.7mm machine-gun with 5000 rounds of 12.7mm linked ammunition. The driver
of the truck was detained and taken to Camp Bondsteel along with the truck and
its contents.

The aim of KFOR's efforts opposite Dobrosin are to prevent the situation from
escalating into a crisis that would destabilize and negate the progress made in
Kosovo since the end of the conflict. All in Kosovo and southern Serbia must
share with us the futility of violence and the necessity of working for a
peaceful
future.

As has been stated repeatedly over the last few months, any extremist activity
based in Kosovo will not be tolerated by KFOR. KFOR will equally prevent any
action by extremist groups such as the UCPMB that would make Kosovo a
staging area for exporting violence. Any para-military activity and acts of
violence
by extremists groups such as the UCPMB and cross boundary criminal activity
have a destabilizing effect on Kosovo. They are not in the best interests of the
civil
population.

The FRY has equally been reminded that KFOR will not tolerate any violations of
the Military Technical Agreement stemming from activities occurring in the
Ground
Safety Zone. KFOR calls on all parties involved to resolve the situation in the
Presevo Valley through dialogue and a political solution.
