Kosovo Serbs Stone French Gendarmes, Two Hurt
PRISTINA, Oct 29, 2000 -- (Reuters) French gendarmes on an anti-crime sweep
in a central Kosovo village were stoned by angry Serbs on Sunday and two were
slightly injured, the NATO-led peace force said.
KFOR spokesman Major Steven Shappell said the incident had occurred in the
village of Priluzje, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of the Kosovo
provincial capital Pristina.
"The gendarmes began a search operation in the village with the intent to detain
an
individual for suspected criminal behavior. Some Serbs gathered and threw some
stones, which injured two French soldiers," Shappell said.
The two gendarmes were treated for minor injuries at the French military
hospital
in the northern city of Mitrovica.
Shappell said the search operation was continuing.
