Incidents During the Past 24 Hours
Multinational Brigade North
Houses Searched; Weapons Found
Early yesterday morning, KFOR French Gendarmerie conducted a joint search
operation with UNMIK Police in Zvecan. Two houses were searched during the
operation, which lasted approximately two hours. Among the items discovered
during the search were a pistol, an AK-47 assault rifle, four grenades, three
hundred rounds of ammunition, two explosive detonators and some detonating
line. Because of the discovery of detonating materials, KFOR Explosive Ordnance
Disposal experts were sent to the scene of the operation to assist in the
search.
UNMIK Police arrested four people in connection with the search operation, and
all
of the illegal items were confiscated.
Men Scuffle with KFOR Soldiers
Yesterday afternoon, KFOR Spanish soldiers manning a checkpoint in Mitrovice /
Mitrovica stopped two Kosovar Albanians. Rather than produce identification
documents as the soldiers requested, the two men attempted to fight with the
soldiers. As a result of the scuffle, UNMIK Police arrested the two men.
Multinational Brigade Centre
Houses Searched; Ammunition Found
Throughout the day yesterday, KFOR Multinational Brigade Centre soldiers
continued to conduct searches for illegal weapons throughout their area of
operations. Early yesterday morning, the soldiers searched a house near the
village of Petrove / Petrovo. During that search, the soldiers found a full
ammunition magazine. Yesterday afternoon, KFOR Multinational Brigade Centre
soldiers searched a house and its adjoining grounds near the village of Gornja
Repa. During this search, the soldiers found a Mauser bolt-action rifle. Both
searches demonstrate KFOR's continuing commitment to removing illegal
weapons from Kosovo.
Ammunition Found Burning
Early yesterday evening, KFOR Multinational Brigade Centre soldiers investigated
reports of shots being fired southwest of the village of Busi / Businje. During
their
investigation, the soldiers came across a fire in which approximately 200 rounds
of
ammunition were being burned. The soldiers safely extinguished the blaze, and
removed the ammunition from the area. The soldiers did not find any other
evidence related to the reports of shots being fired.
Multinational Brigade West
Medical Evacuation Performed
Late yesterday afternoon, a KFOR medical evacuation team transported an
UNMIK Police officer by helicopter from the Italian Military Hospital in Peja /
Pec
to the University Hospital in Skopje, FYROM. The police officer was being
treated
for chest pains. A KFOR Italian medical team consisting of a military doctor and
a
military nurse accompanied the medical evacuation. No details of the UNMIK
Police officer's condition are available.
Multinational Brigade South
Explosion Injures Three People
Yesterday afternoon, an explosion near the Prizren airfield injured three
Kosovar
Albanians. The injured people had been searching for scrap metal in piles of
rubble
lining the road to the airfield. Initial reports indicate that they had
accidentally
disturbed an unexploded ordnance device that was in the pile of rubble. The
injured
people were transported to the Prizren civilian hospital by a KFOR Multinational
Brigade South ambulance. Two of the Kosovar Albanians were reported to have
sustained serious injuries, while the injuries to the third person were reported
to
have been minor. No additional information about the condition of the three is
currently available.
Car Searched; Weapon Found
Last night, soldiers from KFOR Task Force Zur and German Military Police
stopped and searched a car at a checkpoint near the village of Gjonaj / Djonaj.
During the search of the car, the soldiers discovered a pistol. The pistol was
confiscated and the driver of the vehicle arrested.
Multinational Brigade East
Weapons Cache Discovered
Early yesterday morning, a KFOR Multinational Brigade East patrol discovered a
small unguarded weapons cache near the village of Globocice / Globocica. The
cache included a hunting rifle, three AK-47 assault rifles, two pistols and 688
rounds of ammunition. The soldiers transported all of the items found to Camp
Bondsteel.
KFOR Soldiers Interrupt Attack
Shortly after noon yesterday, a KFOR Multinational Brigade East patrol
interrupted
an attack by several Kosovar Albanians upon an UNMIK Police officer. The police
officer had been attempting to serve an eviction notice in Kamenice / Kamenica
when he was assaulted. The assailants broke off their assault and fled as the
KFOR soldiers approached the scene. The police officer did not require medical
attention. UNMIK Police is investigating.
Unexploded Ordnance Device Found
Yesterday afternoon, KFOR Task Force 1-36 Infantry reported an unexploded
ordnance device had been found at the home of a Kosovo Serb in the village of
Cernice / Cernica. KFOR Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts safely disarmed
and removed the device. UNMIK Police is investigating.
Media Advisory
Change in UNMIK - KFOR Press Conference Schedule
Beginning this week, the normal Friday press conference in the UNMIK
Government building in Prishtina / Pristina will be an UNMIK press conference
only, with participation by UNMIK and its civilian pillars. KFOR will continue
to
participate in the Monday and Wednesday UNMIK press conferences as it does
now.
