COMKFOR Statement on Election Campaign
As the Kosovo municipal election campaign winds down, KFOR Commander Lt.
Gen. Carlo Cabigiosu reflected on how the campaign had been conducted. Last
night he stated:
"I am extremely satisfied with the peaceful atmosphere in which campaigning for
the Kosovo municipal elections has taken place. Further, I wish to commend all
of
the people of Kosovo for the spirit of democracy they exhibited during all of
the
various political rallies.
Let me assure you that on election day, as on every other day, all the soldiers
of
KFOR will do what is necessary to ensure a safe and secure environment, with
freedom of movement for all the people of Kosovo. Peaceful and fair elections
will
be an important signal to the International Community that Kosovo is prepared to
move forward in a democratic manner.
House Explosion
Just after 8 p.m. last night in Multinational Brigade East, KFOR Explosive
Ordnance Disposal experts and a patrol from Task Force 1-36 went to the scene
of an explosion at a house near the Viti / Vitina hospital. The house, owned by
a
Kosovar Albanian man, was completely destroyed. Fortunately, there were no
reports of injuries in connection with the explosion.
Initial reports indicate that approximately 14 kilograms of dynamite were used
in
the explosion. The incident remains under investigation.
KFOR Opens Health Clinic
Yesterday in Multinational Brigade Centre, after three months of preparatory
work,
KFOR Norwegian Battalion soldiers opened a civilian health clinic in the village
of
Gllanaselle / Gladno Selo. The facility is part of an on-going KFOR effort to
equip
the municipality of Gllogoc / Glogovac with new medical facilities. The project
is
funded in part by the non-governmental organization Norwegian Aid Committee.
The local municipalities, in conjunction with KFOR and UNMIK, decide where the
money is best spent to benefit as many people as possible.
Incidents During the Past 24 Hours
Multinational Brigade North
Confrontation Avoided
Early last night in Mitrovice / Mitrovica, a group of Kosovo Serbs attempted to
prevent some Kosovar Albanians from walking back to their homes in the Three
Towers complex. In order to assist the Kosovar Albanians, KFOR Multinational
Brigade North soldiers drove them back to their homes. The situation remained
peaceful the entire time, and no injuries or property damage were reported in
connection with the incident.
Multinational Brigade Centre
Houses Searched; Weapons Found
Yesterday morning, KFOR Multinational Brigade Centre troops conducted a house
search operation in Prishtina / Pristina. During the search operation, the
soldiers
found a pistol, 137 rounds of ammunition and four ammunition magazines. The
search operation lasted approximately four hours. UNMIK Police detained five
Kosovar Albanian men and one Kosovar Albanian woman in connection with the
search.
Multinational Brigade West
Houses Searched; Weapons Found
Yesterday morning, KFOR Multinational Brigade West soldiers conducted a
cordon and search operation in the village of Rudice. The search lasted
approximately three hours. Among the items discovered during the search were a
revolver, a pistol, an ammunition magazine, and 52 rounds of ammunition. The
soldiers confiscated the illegal items, and handed one Kosovar Albanian man over
to UNMIK Police.
Man Searched; Pistol Found
Early yesterday afternoon, a KFOR Multinational Brigade West patrol stopped and
searched a man near the village of Hereq / Erec. During the search, the patrol
discovered that the man was carrying a pistol but did not have a weapons
authorization card. He also had an ammunition magazine and six rounds of
ammunition. The patrol confiscated the illegal items and handed the man over to
UNMIK Police.
Multinational Brigade South
Car Searched; Journalist Arrested
Yesterday morning in Malisheve /Malisevo, KFOR Multinational Brigade South
soldiers stopped and searched a car containing a Kosovar Albanian journalist.
During the search, the soldiers discovered an AK-47 assault rifle and 46 rounds
of
ammunition. In connection with this incident, the journalist's house was also
searched. During that search, additional ammunition was found. KFOR Task Force
Malisevo and German Military Police confiscated the weapons and ammunition,
and detained the journalist.
Pistols Found
Late yesterday morning in Prizren, a KFOR German Explosive Ordnance Disposal
team found two loaded Zastava pistols on the ground near the site of a political
rally that was about to begin. KFOR Task Force Prizren and German Military
Police detained a Kosovar Albanian man in connection with the weapons find.
Road Traffic Accident
Yesterday afternoon in Recan / Recane, a civilian vehicle collided with a KFOR
vehicle. Initial reports indicate that the civilian vehicle was traveling at an
excessive
rate of speed. The driver of the civilian vehicle was injured in the collision,
and both
vehicles suffered minor damage. There were no reports of injuries to the KFOR
soldiers. No other details about the collision are currently available. The
accident
remains under investigation.
Multinational Brigade East
Grenade Found
Last night, UNMIK Police requested KFOR assistance in investigating a
suspicious package placed next to the Bankos Building in Gjilan / Gnjilane. KFOR
Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts and a Task Force 1-36 patrol responded to
the request and investigated, using specially trained explosive sniffing dogs.
After
careful scrutiny, it was determined that the package was a grenade. KFOR
Multinational Brigade East is continuing to assist UNMIK Police in investigating
this incident.
