Kostunica calls for recount in presidential election

BELGRADE, Sept 29 (AFP) -

Opposition presidential candidate Vojislav Kostunica has called for a recount of
ballots in the
disputed September 24 vote, his aide told thousands of supporters gathered at
the central Belgrade
Square of the Republic.

"I appeal to all well-intentioned countries, public figures and experts to join
the recount of ballots
cast on September 24," Kostunica said in an open letter read by his aide Vladeta
Jankovic.

"This call is especially addressed to friendly Greece ... but also to all those
willing to help in
eliminating tensions which could destabilise not only Yugoslavia, but the whole
region of the
Balkans," the letter said.

Jankovic announced that another rally would be held in Belgrade at 8:00 pm (1800
GMT), to see
"what reaction the appeal met."

The Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) says Kostunica won the first round on
Sunday with an
absolute majority and have denounced the decision for a run-off as a bid by
Milosevic to cling to
power.
