HIS HOLINESS THE PATRIARCH KYR PAVLE RECEIVES DR. VOJISLAV KOSTUNICA

His Holiness the Serbian Patriarch Kyr Pavle received Dr. Vojislav
Kostunica, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Opposition of
Serbia, today in the Palace of the Patriarchate in Belgrade.

Dr. Kostunica informed His Holiness the Patriarch of the election results
now at the disposal of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia and expressed
concern regarding the acceptance of the democratically expressed will of the
people. Dr. Kostunica expressed his personal satisfaction with the dignified
support and behavior of the citizens in the elections. He expressed the hope
that the citizens will, in the same manner, maintain peace and dignity until
the final report of the Federal Election Commission.

His Holiness the Patriarch Kyr Pavle thanked Dr. Kostunica for his position
and actions to date, as well as for the wish of the Democratic Opposition of
Serbia that the entire election and post-election process be concluded in a
peaceful and dignified manner. In the entire civilized world the government
is changed by the will of the people only and exclusively through free and
democratic elections. His Holiness expects that the ruling party will also
accept the electoral will of the people and thus contribute to the good of
the people and the state. On this occasion His Holiness the Patriarch Kyr
Pavle called on everyone, including the army and the police, to protect the
interests of the people and the state and not of any individual.
