Voter Turnout 75 Percent in Yugoslav Polls
BELGRADE, Sep 25, 2000 -- (Reuters) Almost 75 percent of people registered
to vote in Serbia had cast their ballots in Yugoslavia's elections shortly
before they
closed on Sunday, according to opposition figures.
The Democratic Opposition of Serbia, hoping to oust the government of
Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic, said the figure at 7:30 p.m. (1730 GMT), just
half
an hour before they closed, was based on a sample of polling stations.
No official turnout figures were immediately available for the federal
presidential
and parliamentary elections and Serbian local polls.
The figures did not include the turnout in Montenegro, Serbia's small sister
republic
in the Yugoslav federation, whose pro-West government declared a boycott of
the
polls but allowed anyone who wanted to vote to go ahead. The turnout there
was
put at 23-25 percent.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) and closed at 8:00 p.m.
(1800
GMT).
