ETA ADMITS KILLINGS AND BOMBINGS
================================

Spain, September 22, 2000 (BBC)

The Basque separatist group ETA has claimed responsibility for
recent attacks in Spain, including the assassination of a politician
in August and five bombings.

In a statement in the separatist newspaper Gara it said that the
group bombed a Basque night-club this month because it was considered
a center of drugs.

ETA accused police of not doing enough to stop the trade in
drugs which it said "hurts Basque youth and goes against the process
of liberating the Basque country."

The statement did not claim responsibility for Thursday's
assassination of a town councillor in Barcelona, but the organisation
usually does not do so until much later.

Jose Luis Ruiz Casado, who is scheduled to be buried on Friday,
was shot in the back of the head.

It was not clear how he received his injuries. Itar-Tass news

One of the radio's reporters, Andrei Babitsky, was detained by
Russian troops in Chechnya in January and disappeared for several
weeks in a mysterious prisoner swap and later was released.

INDONESIAN ARMY LINKED TO FORGERY SCANDAL
=========================================

JAKARTA, Indonesia, September 22, 2000 (BBC)

Indonesia's army leadership has been implicated in a
counterfeiting scandal allegedly intended to fund pro-Jakarta
militias in East Timor. An Indonesian ex-soldier told a court in
Jakarta that he was ordered to counterfeit $2.2m in bank notes by
General Tyasno Sudarto, then chief of military intelligence and now
head of the army.

The ex-serviceman, Ismail Putra, and his co-accused Eddy Kereh,
both in their 60s, were jailed for seven and four years respectively
for forging the Indonesian rupiah. Putra said he was told the
original order came from General Wiranto who was Indonesia's military
chief until last October.

Both the prosecution and the judge refused to summon General
Tyasno to testify at the Jakarta trial saying there was not enough
evidence linking him to the case.

General Tyasno has denied Putra's allegations over the
counterfeit money as "lies" and "slander".
