Serb Sentenced to 20 Years for Kosovo Killings
GNJILANE, Yugoslavia, Sep 21, 2000 -- (Reuters) The first war crimes trial from
the Kosovo conflict concluded on Wednesday as a young Serb was sentenced to 20
years in prison for the deaths of ethnic Albanians during NATO's 1999 air war.
Milos Jokic, 21, was convicted of killing one man and ordering another killed.
Serb magistrates had boycotted the trial and Serb defense witnesses refused to
testify, citing fears for their safety.
An international judge joined Kosovo Albanian magistrates on the bench for the
hearing, which began in May and heard 18 witnesses, including Marte Tunaj, who
said she was raped and beaten by Jokic.
Prosecutor Sabit Maliqi said he was satisfied with the verdict and the sentence.
Jokic's defence lawyers left the court without comment. It was not clear whether
their client would appeal.
Jokic was charged with shooting dead Rexhep Emrullahu in the village of Verban
on May 9, 1999, as part of a Serb-instigated terror campaign to drive ethnic
Albanians out of Kosovo. Emrullahu's brother and Tunaj said he should have been
sentenced to life imprisonment.
