Transparent Productions is pleased to announce the Saturday, February, 4th
performance of The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at Sangha, as the ensemble
continues its now 5 year Black History Month tradition with a
Transparent-presented DC area performance.
Originally berthed from Chicago’s legendary AACM, for over twenty years The
Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has been steadfastly bridging ancient and
contemporary
music. Remaining innovative and unique while maintaining musical integrity,
the
ensemble blends traditional African rhythmic and melodic sensibilities with
popular
African American musical forms. The ensemble’s rich and varied
instrumentation -
traditional trap drums, African and Latin percussion, saxophone, flute,
bagpipe,
and kalimba - imbues their music with a warm, dense mixture of textural
riches.
The group is lead by drummer Kahil El’Zabar, a formal student of West
African
drumming, former president of the AACM, and alumni of various ensembles,
from
avant figures such as David Murray and Henry Threadgill to pop icons Stevie
Wonder and Paul Simon.
Joining El’Zabar is longtime member and reedist Ernest Khabeer Dawkins,
current AACM President, trumpeter Corey Wilkes, current trumpeter for
the Art Ensemble of Chicago, both part of the newer generation
of AACMers intent on refining and redefining traditional and avant jazz
techniques. An added treat is special guest Fareed Haque, a guitartist of
Pakistani and Chilean decent who deftly blends Flamenco, Persian, and
European classical, with jazz and funk influences.
Avant tradition meets contemporary innovation…The Ethnic
Heritage Ensemble remains a healing force for today’s world.
Since 1997, Transparent Productions has presented non-profit creative
music concerts all over the D.C. Metro area. As with all Transparent shows,
100% of the door goes directly to the artists. Questions? E-mail
