There were hundreds, even thousands who were excommunicated for apostasy
from everything from excess food storage and homeschooling to participation
in the John Birch Society and American Study Group. These were "red flags"
that brought a person into suspicious where the bishop or Stake President
then grilled them about their fealty to the Church and the prophet, and when
it came down to the question, "would you do this even if the brethren told
you not to?" and the answer came back to the affirmative, then they were
seen as being apostate and were either excommunicated or had their temple
recommend taken away until they either said "Uncle" or were eventually
exe'd.
The same story, over and over and over again.
For a lot of the people who ended up in Jim Harmston's TLC church here in
Manti, the issue was having prayer circles in their own home and having
altars in their own home -- even though this was common practice among even
the G.A.s 50 years ago.
Daniel Quinn or someone might have some more exhaustive research on the
phenomenon.
My account is just based on memory of personal interactions and observations
from my vantage point however broad or limited that may be.

Sterling, you write, "...If we were back in 1992/93 and your stuff was on my
site, you would be out
so quick it would make your head spin..."
Why back then in '92 & '93?
I guess I'm saying--I'm essentially politically dumb when it comes to what
the Church GAs have been up to this past decade, or so. Not my cup of tea.
Don't care, really. I mean--never was one for church politics.
What was happening back in '92 & '93?
