Please see the attached letter below from the TexITE District soliciting bids to host the 2011 Summer Meeting.  The meeting will need to be held in Region 2, which is an area stretching from College Station to the Red River, including the Greater Dallas Section.  Within the Metroplex, Region 2 is essentially defined as everything east of the Tarrant/Dallas County line.

(I am repeating this message because it appeared that the first broadcast was delayed by YahooGroups to some members.)

 

The online election for the 2010 Secretary/Treasurer position resulted in a tie.  Therefore, there will be a paper ballot run-off election at this Friday’s Greater Dallas Section luncheon & annual business meeting.

 

The two candidates are:

                John Denholm (Lee Engineering)

                Gary Graham (Bucher, Willis & Ratliff)

 

As stated in the Section Bylaws*, voting will be limited to eligible voters who attend the meeting.  Eligible voters will include those members who were eligible to cast ballots in the online election.  An eligible voting member must have been both a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and a paid member of the TexITE Greater Dallas Section as of October 9, 2009.

 

When you arrive for the meeting on Friday, the tellers committee will check your name against a list of eligible voters and provide you with a paper ballot.  The results of the run-off election will be announced at the end of the meeting.

 

 

*Section 4.8 of the Greater Dallas Section Bylaws provides a remedy for a tie situation:  “… In case of a tie vote, the voting members attending the Section Annual Meeting shall choose between the candidates by means of a secret ballot and the candidate receiving the majority of votes will be elected."

The Arlington Technology Association is sponsoring a one-hour seminar on ethics for Professional Engineers on Wednesday October 14 at 7:00am.  Presented by Lance Kinney, P.E., deputy director of the Texas State Board of Professional Engineers, the seminar fulfills one of the requirements needed for continuing P.E. licensure. The seminar will take place in Nedderman Hall on the campus of The University of Texas at Arlington. The cost is $20; proceeds will be used to sponsor scholarships for freshman engineering students. Just a reminder that we don't have a Dallas TexITE meeting in August due to the District/International Meeting in San Antonio.
 
In addition, our September meeting will be a joint meeting with the Fort Worth Section.  It will be at a different location and a different day of the month.  It will be on Thursday, September 17, at the Ruthe Jackson Center in Grand Prairie.  A regular announcement with more details will come out in early September.

The Legislature passed HB 55 which amends the Transportation Code to prohibit hand held cell phone use in school zones.  The law goes into effect September 1, 2009.

Please see the following message from our Section Representative, Brian Moen:
 
Dear Fellow TexITE members,
 
As your section representative, I want to make you aware of some items pending in our Texas Legislature.  TexITE as an organization does not lobby the legislature, however, we do want to provide our members with information so they can decide for themselves what they should do regarding matters that can impact our profession.
 
I am writing you to make you aware of SB2295 (and companion HB4643) which is currently pending in the Texas Legislature.  We received further clarification today of the intent of this bill.  If passed, it would require that a 6 second yellow interval be used at signalized intersections with photographic traffic monitoring systems.  The 6 second yellow interval would be required regardless of the speed or geometry of the intersection approach.  The Committee on Transportation has received little if any input from members of our profession regarding this proposal.  I encourage you to write Senator John Corona, Chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation to share your views on this bill.
