Hard to pass at $25 each. Let me know what they are and condition. I
would be interested in 2 (Boil and HLT).

I wanted to buy the imperial blonde ale kit from taylors but it was gone when I
went to buy it. I thought of just trying to buy the ingredients separatly
myself but the ingredient list online doesn't give out all the info. They leave
out the type of hops and yeast to use. If you guys could help me figure out what
hops and yeast I will be set. The recipe is:
6.6 lb Pilsner LME
1 lb Wheat DME
1 lb corn sugar
1 lb honey malt (steeped)
Hops ?
Yeast ?

I'm not sure what equipment you have now but you'll need a mash tun,
hot liquor tank, wort chiller and a way to boil at least 6 gallons,
turkey fryer is the most common. As for modifying the keg you'll need
to cut the top off, which isn't too hard and find a method of getting
the wort out of it. Most people either weld a coupling and valve into
the side or use a weld-less kit, an ordinary raking cane will work in
a pinch.

are the kegs used for hot liquor tanks and mash tuns as well?
I've already got the wort chiller and turkey fryer.

You can use them for all three but you'll need a false bottom for a
mash tun and deal with heat loss. I think most of the all grain
brewers around here use coolers for mash tuns.

myself but the ingredient list online doesn't give out all the info. They leave
out the type of hops and yeast to use. If you guys could help me figure out what
hops and yeast I will be set. The recipe is:

Hey brewers - some of you know I have been working with Jerry at Monk's towards
getting a brewery set up there, and we're getting closer to getting it done.
Need some input from you though about an idea that Jerry had - I'll include his
email but basically he is thinking about setting up the brewery where his shop
is now, which is pretty big. The idea is to have access for homebrewers to be
able to have a place to brew in that space as well. He is looking for input
from BS2 members, who would be interested in doing this, etc. Please let me
know what you think and I'll pass the info on to Jerry. Thanks, Scott.

Scott,

Looks like there are going to be some changes around here mid summer. More than
likely my back room, where the shop is currently, will be available. It would
make an ideal spot for a brewery, though larger than what you need. Would there
be any interest from the Brew Club to have a central place to do their brewing?
Could easily accomodate several people doing their own brewing, with 24 hour
access. Have water back there already. Would have restroom access during the
day. Anyway, think about it and get back to me. To clarify, I am contemplating
having both an on site brewery as we have discussed, and a place for home
brewers to do their thing. Might work.

Let me know,

Jerry

I have to admit, it'd be pretty cool to be able to do a Friday or Saturday night brew while AT my favorite bar in town.

Would be a great way to introduce brewing to some of the other patrons who've shown interest as well.

I think it's a great idea.

I also would be interested in using such facilities...I actually was just thinking a few months back that there should be something like that in SF with the growing popularity of Homebrewing, I know there is already places like that in other cities!

I assume there would be a fee or cost involved to use the space?

I think it would be awesome to have something like that in town.  It would work great for helping potential brewers get involved.  I can imagine using the facilities to mentor young brewers.  And it would provide a warm place during the winter for those of us without heated garages.

Having a space like that in town would be great.  Getting together a couple nights a month to do some batches together as a group would be awesome.    Discuss what kind of beer to brew and have everyone bring a fermenter and money to split the cost of supplies.  Great idea.

I'd have to agree with the previous replies.  The thought of not freezing in my garage during the winter months is extremely appealling.  I've also presented a couple of "classes" on homebrewing for beginners in less than ideal locations.  It would be great to have a place designed for brewing - available to teach those with a desire to get into the hobby.  Monks is the GREATEST!

Speaking as someone who has never done an all grain brew, It'd be
great to have a place that has the equipment/facilities to learn all
grain brewing at a reasonable cost. That and all the free advice the
club has to offer and I might have the guts to switch to all grain.

On another note, what are you guys doing out in the cold
garage....grow a pair! Tell her you've got important stuff to do and
you're taking over the house to BREW BEER!!

Hey Beer Lovers -

On Wednesday, February 24, Raziel's Beer Club will be making a metaphorical trip to Chicago as we are going to be sampling and celebrating the great beers from the Goose Island Brewery.  Most of you are aware of Goose Island and have probably tasted some of their generally available beers like the 312 Urban Wheat Ale that is on tap down at Raziel's, or the Honkers Ale, their best selling Pale Ale.  But most haven't had the opportunity to try their seasonals, their Belgian style ales like Matilda or Pere Jacques, or their heavyweight masterpieces like the Bourbon County Stout.

We are going to be sampling a wide array of Goose Island craft beers, and our friends at Conkling Distributing are working very hard to provide us with some of those brews not commonly available in South Dakota.

So put that night on your social calendar.  We will begin the festivities at 7:30.  I will send you an update next week with more specific information on the beer roster and costs.

Cheers!

Rick

It is an interesting idea.  Is jerry thinking sort of a brew on premises or just an area that is club use?

If club use maybe it would be an option to have a "buy in" and get a small system like the Sabco or a Brew Sculpture.  With the numbers in the club now it would work out to be a minor individual investment for a ten gallon system and say four conicals to get her up and running.

Just a bit of thinking outside the box.  Not like I need it but I would be interested in contributing something to the cause.

Maybe we could talk the good folks at Taylors Pantry in setting up an account with Sabco and get a demo system set up on the cheap!  I know they are talking with Blichman right now.

I would be able to build a grain crusher box like the one I have for myself.  The guts would be something that would be in the set up budget.

Hey folks!
I'm currently living out in Spearfish, SD, but I know and love Monk's -- I think
that any space like that being proposed would do well to have some lagering
capability, as most smaller homebrewers may like a proper introduction to such
equipment, and I personally enjoy ales, but some of my belgian styles could be
hybrid ale/lagers.

homebrewers to be able to have a place to brew in that space as well. He is
looking for input from BS2 members, who would be interested in doing this, etc.
Please let me know what you think and I'll pass the info on to Jerry. Thanks,
Scott.

Nice thought Brian.  But, the pair I have work just fine and my wife supports my hobby completely.  I choose to brew out in the cold with a turkey frier, because it takes forever and a day to do a full boil on an electric kitchen stove.

Speaking as someone who has never done an all grain brew, It'd be
great to have a place that has the equipment/facilitie s to learn all
grain brewing at a reasonable cost. That and all the free advice the
club has to offer and I might have the guts to switch to all grain.

On another note, what are you guys doing out in the cold

I am new to homebrewing and have a question on fermentation. I have done two
"kits" which I have purchased from Good Spirits in which in the instructions it
states to move the wort to the secondary fermentor after bubbling slows or stops
or on the average 10-14 days. Both batches I have brewed have stopped releasing
CO2 in three days. Can anyone explain? Am I doing something wrong?

Hi all you hardy northerners!  Recently back from AZ and just out of hospital from back surgery this week, so no brewing for a while. Catching up on emails reveals I've missed out on lots.

Jerry, great idea. My two sons who brew have lived in various parts of country where similar set ups were available. Here is a web one web site that went further then we might want to. I believe in cleaning up my own mess. Would be fun even to just come down and hang out watching someone do their master craft.
Hope to see you at future event

Hey brewers - some of you know I have been working with Jerry at Monk's towards getting a brewery set up there, and we're getting closer to getting it done. Need some input from you though about an idea that Jerry had - I'll include his email but basically he is thinking about setting up the brewery where his shop is now, which is pretty big. The idea is to have access for homebrewers to be able to have a place to brew in that space as well. He is looking for input from BS2 members, who would be interested in doing this, etc. Please let me know what you think and I'll pass the info on to Jerry. Thanks, Scott.

Scott,

Looks like there are going to be some changes around here mid summer. More than likely my back room, where the shop is currently, will be available. It would make an ideal spot for a brewery, though larger than what you need. Would there be any interest from the Brew Club to have a central place to do their brewing?
Could easily acco modate several people doing their own brewing, with 24 hour access. Have water back there already. Would have restroom access during the day. Anyway, think about it and get back to me. To clarify, I am contemplating having both an on site brewery as we have discussed, and a place for home brewers to do their thing. Might work.

Let me know,

Jerry

Nope you are doing everything right. It takes about 4 days, give or take for
fermentation to be done (turning sugar to wonderful alcohol). But you want to
give it extra days for the yeast to kinda clean up after themselves, they get
messy when they eat all that sugar. Also lets them settle at the bottom of the
fermenter too. Always good rule of thumb to leave it sit for at least 7 days and
bet to check your gravity readying 3 days in a row and make sure you get the
same reading every time. What Ive found is that after the 7th day, you are safe
to rack to a secondary if you want. If you are brewing a big beer, leave it for
longer.

Thanks a lot for the information. I moved to a secondary fermentor after five days and will keep an eye on it. What if I were to get conflicting gravity readings? Same reading for three days mean fermentation is complete? Rob

Just leave your beer alone for 10 days(Ale) 14 for (Lager) and do not rack to a
secondary and just rack off the primary after 10 days if there in no longer any
activity go ahead and rack for bottling or kegging. You will have a clean beer
and then repitch your yeast from the primary and you can use it again. Cheers

What do you mean by conflicting gravity readings? If they arent the same, just
let it sit for longer. Normally if you hit your final gravity reading, its
either nearly done or it is done. And using a secondary is up to you. Dont let
anyone tell you that if you are using one its wrong. Its a personal preference.
I rack to a secondary for two reasons, one to clear it up a little more and two,
opens up my primaries. I have 3 primaries and 2 secondaries. Like I said, its
all opinion. There is no wrong way to do this. You just have to find your own
way. :)

Cheers.

Again thanks for the info. I look forward to becoming a better brewer by finding my own preferences by trial and error! A wise man recently told me - I never brewed a beer I couldn't drink!
