How to maneuver through and locate files on CyberVPM

Go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cybervpm/
Once you are signed in, you will see a list of links (in a different colored
box) in the
upper left of the page.

Left Side of Screen

1. "Message" will give you a list of the messages that have been sent since
April 2000.
2. "Files" will give you some files with a variety of forms and other
information regarding volunteer management. If you are looking for a specific
type of form, this would be the place to look first.
3. "Photos" area is currently empty, but we plan to post photos from conferences
or other activities.
4. "Links" will take you to a listing of web addresses for members who have
uploaded their website to cybervpm.
5. "Members" will give you a list of all of the members in cybervpm, listed by
email address. You can search for a member if you know at least a part of their
email address (or can make a good guess).

Right Side of Screen

1. "Edit Your Membership" on the upper right side of the screen, allows you to
edit how to receive emails (individual, daily digest, special notices or no
email), add a new profile, add a new email address (if yours has changed since
you joined or last updated), and how you want your messages formatted.
2. "Leave Group" you will be unsubscribed from the group.
3. "My Groups" you can also see any other yahoo groups that you belong to.

To post a file to CyberVPM’s shared directory:
1. Send an email to the list serv with a description of the file you would like
to post.
2. The moderator will reply with a request for you to send them the file.
3. The moderator will then review and, if approved, post the file.

The Home Page also shows the most recent messages and has a variety of
statistical information for you to peruse. Thanks for being a part of this
group.

If you have questions, send an email to cybervpm-leaders@yahoogroups.com

Subject: Who you are makes a difference. A blue Ribbon for you.

A friend sent me this.. and I think it is quite appropriate to share with
this group. It also sounds like something VPMs could do. I take the story
as fiction, but I also want to say to each and everyone of you.. Who You Are
Makes a Difference! In fact you are all professional difference makers.

Nan Hawthorne

Who You Are Makes A Difference

A teacher in New York decided to honour each of her Seniors in high school
by telling them the difference they each made. She called each student to
the front of the class, one at a time. First she told each of them how they
had made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them
with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters, which read, "Who I Am Makes
a Difference."

Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of
impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students
three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this
acknowledgment ceremony. >

Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honoured whom and!
report back to the class in about a week. One of the boys in the class went
to a junior executive in a nearby company and honoured him for helping him
with his career planning.

He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two
extra ribbons, and said, "We're doing a class project on recognition, and
we'd like you to go out, find somebody to honour, give them a blue ribbon,
then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person
to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me
and tell me what happened."

Later that day the junior executive went in to see his boss, who had been
noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down
and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The
junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon
and would he give him permission to put it on him.

His surprised boss said, "Well, sure." The boss seemed very surprised.

The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss's
jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said,
"Would you do me a favour? Would you take this extra one and pass it on by
honouring somebody else. The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is
doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony
going and find out how it affects people."

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down.

He said, "The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office
and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave
me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine. He thinks I'm a
creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says "Who I Am Makes a
Difference" on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and
asked me to find somebody else to honour.

As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honour
with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honour you. My days are
really hectic and when come home I don't pay a lot of attention to you.
Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and
for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit
here and, well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me.
Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You're
a great kid and I love you!"

The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he wouldn't stop crying. His
whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears,
"Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a letter to you and Mom
explaining why I had killed myself and asking you to forgive me. I was going
to commit suicide tonight after you were asleep. I just didn't think that
you cared at all. The letter is upstairs. I don't think I need it after all.

His father walked upstairs and found a heartfelt letter full of anguish and
pain. The envelope was addressed, "Mom and Dad." The boss went back to work
a changed man. He was no longer a grouch but made sure to let all his
employees know that they made a difference.

The junior executive helped several other young people with career planning
and never forgot to let them know that they made a difference in his
life...one being the boss's son. And the young boy and his classmates
learned a valuable lesson.

Who you are DOES make a difference. You are under no obligation to send this
on to anyone...not to two people or to two hundred. As far as I am
concerned, you can delete it and move on to the next message. Or, if you
want, you can send it to all of the people who mean something to you, or
send it to the one, two, or three people who mean the most. Or just smile
and know that someone thinks that you are important, or you wouldn't have
received this in the first place.

Remember - I just gave you a blue ribbon.

Here it is to print and put on your wall.

At long last, I'm able to put some time and energy into updating my
own web site and free resources. The latest update is this:

Myths About Online Volunteering (Virtual Volunteering)
http://www.coyotecommunications.com/volunteer/ovmyths.html

This is, IMO, a long overdue look at the many misconceptions
surrounding online volunteering. Looking forward to feedback.

The most complete, comprehensive info about "Virtual Volunteering"
(I've grown to prefer the term "online volunteering", actually):

The Virtual Volunteering Project

Click on the link to "Virtual Volunteering"
(the archived version of the site I did, which has resources that were
removed in the current version, is still at
http://www.serviceleader.org/old/vv/)

FAQs should probably be your first stop.

Dotti,

you asked:
"I'm getting ready to venture in the Virtual Volunteering arena. Any
suggestions?? or comments"

I can point you to some of my posts on the aforementioned topic:
*some general info
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cybervpm/message/9200

*Online decisions
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cybervpm/message/9341

Keep in mind, I manage by interactions, so I got a lot into how to do the
computer-mediated communication (CMC). If you like this kind of management,
I'd strongly advice you to dig DEEP into it.

For what pertains to how to set up a program in general, check:
Ellis and Cravens e-book:
http://www.serviceleader.org/new/documents/vvguide.pdf

If you think you might need to hear something more on the topic from me,
just ask :)

I agree with following labor rules when it comes to youth volunteers
whenever possible. There are a variety of volunteer projects younger
children may work on from home. Why not suggest these type of
opportunities and offer an in-depth tour of your facility when the
child or group stops in to drop off the items?

That said, I would be very hesitant to take in a child under the age
of 14.

Yes, I do too, but I have to be careful. Our HR people say we can't use that
because we use that in a real HR job posting... so therefore, I can't use that
one. Just like we don't call our Job Descriptions in Volunteering Dept here... I
had to rename them "Service Guides".

There is not a single message that works for all generations. Different
age groups view volunteering and different ways and thus the marketing
messages must vary. That being said, here a a few ideas to get you thinking.

Older volunteers:
Give the gift of yourself
Be appreciated -- Volunteer
Enjoy a change of pace – Volunteer
Volunteering is a heart healthy
Expand Yourself -- Volunteer

For Boomers:
Make a difference
Be a change agent
Community Leader Needed
Create a legacy
Join our community of leaders
We’re need for a few good people

Your younger volunteers:
Change one life
Innovators sought
Build the future
Help yourself while helping others

A nice intergenerational (and diversity) approach is to do a small
collage of faces of diverse volunteers. Leave one spot blank and say:
This Spot Reserved for You.

Anyone have any ideas for an outrageous, yet concise, way of phrasing a call to
action?

Hi
I need some help with Outlook - I have tried to get help from Microsoft but
I can't find my software disc so they can't help me-

I use Outlook for my email and have been doing so for years. I format my
signature in WORD because it allows me to have color and I like being able
go have my spelling errors and grammar errors highlighted for me before I
hit send-

The problem is that for some reason the format of my emails has suddenly
gotten very big. Every time I go to write a letter, the font of my
signature is enormous and I have to go to View, and click on "normal" in
order for the outgoing letter to look normal, with a font the size it is
supposed to be.

I cannot find anywhere in the set up of email in WORD where this default is
created or changed. I have the font the correct size in the set up - it
looks fine in the set up- but when I open a new letter to write it,
suddenly the font is enormous and it takes up the whole screen- I cannot
figure out what to do - I can't find anybody who can figure out why it is
happening and how to change it.

Is there anybody on our list who has had this happen- got any ideas?

Thanks

Just a thought - maybe the problem isn't the job title, perhaps it is the
job. You can't hardly hire someone to do clerical work - why on earth would
anyone do it for free? Perhaps you could re-package it as a job for two
people and try to recruit friends to come in and volunteer together - "Meet
your best friend for lunch and good works".

I know this is slightly off topic, but my CEO just dropped this on my
desk and I have no idea where to go. We have created a publication for
distribution called, "The Environmental Story of Frederick County's
Monocacy and Catoctin Watersheds". We would like to distribute them to
our members and educational resources and we have just lost our grant
for printing. Does anyone know of a kind print shop that is willing to
work with the non-profit world who may be able to help us out?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Are you looking for a donation of services? If so, your first step is
to contact all of your volunteers, including your board of directors,
to see if any have an official affiliation with a print shop (or, if
they are part of a large corporation that has its own internal print
shop). You need to work with anyone who does on how to approach the
particular company about:
-- why your organization is important to your community
-- why this publication is important
-- how you will be distributing this publication
-- how you will acknowledge this company's donation
-- how you will be dealing with future printing costs

Most companies are more willing to consider a donation of services if
they have some kind of affiliation with the organization needing the
service -- for instance, a staff member at a print shop who volunteers
with your organization.

Remember in your solicitations of this donation to emphasize the
opportunity it presents to the for-profit company, rather than
emphasizing your need of a free donation, and be prepared to answer
tough questions, such as "Why would you put all of these resources
into producing a publication that you did not have the resources to
print?" Don't be defensive -- have a professional response to such
questions ready to go so that they don't catch you by surprise.

If no one among your core of volunteers has any affiliation, it will
be time to knock on doors. You may want to start with printers that
are the most physically close to your organization (your "neighbors").
You could also try contacting other nonprofits in your area to see if
they have recommendations.

I am currently conducting research for an online class that I teach in
Volunteer Program Planning and Evaluation. I remember my history of volunteer
management and looked up the works of Ivan Scheier, perhaps the grandfather of
some of the modern thinking about the profession. Some of his works are
housed at Regis University. What struck me was that even though some of the
information is 30 years old --- it still fits and is relevant. Take time to
look
at this site.
