Hee hee! Been there and done that--IF you dig your trenches correctly it works great. Sometimes, though, it backfires........and you end up with the water...
The simple answer... they didn't. As most have stated, canvas tends to swell a bit when wet and seals itself *decently* but not well - hence the admonishment...
