NAQCC Sprint Wednesday night!

Our November sprint is this coming Wednesday evening local time (November 14,
EST - 8:30-10:30PM, CST - 7:30-9:30PM, MST - 6:30-8:30PM, PST - 5:30-7:30PM),
which translates as Thursday November 15, 0130-0330Z in all cases.

I will refer you to the proper URL:

http://naqcc.info/sprint201211.html

There you will find all the details as to time, frequencies and other important
information.

Certificates: SWA (simple wire antennas) certificates by call area, VE and DX
for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers (New!). A Certificate for top score in the
GAIN antenna category. Starting in November we are adding an extra category
called SPECIAL for those folks. If that description fits you, you will be able
to select that division and compete against others in the same situation. That
will be taken care of via our autologger. As with the other categories and
divisions, we'll also award a 2nd and 3rd place certificate according to the
same criteria.

Prizes: Too many to list!! - We're making a change in our prize drawing for the
sprints. Here's a quote from the prizes page, under the main section, on the
web site:
"Beginning with the November 2012 sprint, a winner will be notified as soon as
one is chosen. Then the first to reply gets the first choice of a prize. Before
that we went by order of sprints. In other words, the June winner had to wait
for the May winner to make his choice, etc. Now it's first response, first
choice no matter what month. That way those who take forever to answer won't
hold up those who are eager to get their prize. If someone doesn't reply at all
by the end of the following month, there will be a re-drawing to choose a
replacement winner for that sprint, and the one who didn't reply becomes
ineligible for any future drawings. For example, the June winner has until the
end of July to respond."

This is a monthly event that caters to the CW veteran, the CW newcomer, straight
key and bug fans. All are welcome to participate (this includes QRO); but you
must use QRP power levels to compete for awards.

If you are not already a member of NAQCC... membership is FREE! Now is your
chance to join the largest QRP CW Club in the world!! We currently have 6290+
members in: All 50 States - 9 VE Provinces - 90 Countries. Just sign up on the

with your membership number which is good for life.

No pain,  Sir !

The moment I saw money for little work,  I guessed.  I had to work hard for mine,  with the government taking back a third of it.  Since they paid me anyhow, in the first place,  what with inflation & all,  it amounted to just a long term loan...

Happy Holidays to all!

I have an old Vibroplex delux paddle. Noticed the label came off. It's about 25-
30 years old. During the time it was glued not rivited.

Can someone tell me the best glue to use?

Don't use my paddle much have switched to my SK and bug but want to keep my
paddle nice.

What is use is contact type cement, Mike.

I apply a coat to the back of the label and to the base and let it dry.
Then I apply a second coat to each. This coat,
I wait until it gets that gloss look and then put them together. The
base, I mask it with masking tape before I apply
the contact cement. On Deluxe models (chrome finish), clean the chrome
well with acetone or lacquer thinner.
Remove the masking tape after the second coat and before you apply the
label. Apply pressure/weight to the label
for 30 minutes to an hour.

If the old glue is intact on the label, you might try moderate heat, a hair dryer or steam iron if you can fit it in there or on it.
That is how I get Formica to re-attach itself to a counter or table, I iron it back on/down.

You might check with Brian, N1SU, as he has the listed on his web page.
jsb@... e-mail. http://n1su.com/

Also, it is listed on Tom Perera's  W1TP, web page:
http://w1tp.com/itelegr2.htm

To be honest, I was not aware of it Tom and will keep an ear out for it and put one or two of vintage bugs in there.
Let me know if you hear other information about the net.

New Year's Eve is a traditional night of nostalgia.  BUGS have joined the fun on what was formally known as SKN, or Straight Key Night, but has become known as Mechanical Key night welcoming bugs to the activity, since year 2000 when no fewer than Four Cloverleaf early Vibroplex #4 or Blue Racers came together in a single roundtable QSO.

While bugs may be found anywhere on the bands, they may be most prevalent between .020 and .030 from the bottom of CW bands.

I hope to be on with my two Juniors, '20 & '36 and my '55 Blue Racer Deluxe.  I may even get the '28 nickel plated #6 going by then as well. I have a '41 Zephyr (finally)
in Texas, but I don't think it will be down here soon. I hope to CU then as well.

The '29 #6 (Lightning) is a gem.  The obvious thing is the slightly larger speed-weight, but for whatever reason, that key is just so smooth!

And Jpe, congrats on your JR's, too.  You will find the DL and X you are looking for.  They are both vy fun keys.

Here is my JR sporting rare chrome plating and Woolly Mammoth ivory finger pieces.

I will have My 1929 Lightning Bug on air. Or if i run into someone else with a junior or zephyr, i will match it ;-)   AC5CW ..

Beautiful, Fred!

Hi, Tom -

Certainly would like to hear your Balanced Bug sing. Family time
permitting, I will be exercising a number of homebrew bugs, including the very
tiny Flea Bug. If the QRM is not too bad, I will hang out at the lower end of
40 and I hope to hear a lot of bugs, along with some good straight key sending.

73 es Merry Christmas to all de Rich, WB9LPU

The high traffic level telegraphy had reached toward the end of the 1800's necessitated the invention of mechanical speed keys including the Sideswiper (1880's I think) and the bugs (the original Vibroplex in 1904).  Any and all mechanical keys fall into the New Year's Eve, night of nostalgia.

Many old bugs will be heard tonight with a concentration of them around 7.025 and 3.525 +/- 5 khz.  Some rarely heard species to be on the lookout for include: McElroy (world's greatest telegrapher according to him) bugs from the thirties, Dow keys, Les Logans, Australian Simplex Autos (a right-angle bug using a release mechanism), and various Vibroplex species including the Original, the Double Lever, the X key, the Blue Racers (early ones were really blue), the Junior, the #6 or Lightning, the WW II J-36, the Zephyr, and the Champion.  If you hear a Vertical, or a Midget (only a handful known to exist) you will have REALLY lucked out!

It's all about fun, comradery, and nostalgia.  See you on the bands.

Nice, Fred!

I had to leave my McElroy keys in Texas. I ran out of room and weight limits.

But, I will have my 1920 and 1936 Juniors and my 1955 Blue Racer Deluxe on. I am still working on make
a new dot spring contact assembly.  I did turn the part I need to make watchmakers lathe headstock to
be solid.  Now, for it, I need to get or make a counter shaft for better turning.

So much work here lately, I have not finished the 1912 Original yet.  I have a Zephyr in Texas now, hoping
it will soon arrive down here.

I am working on the basket case HF2V vertical now and who knows, I might have a respectable signal on
40 & 80 metres soon.

Happy New Year, Joe.

Oh my, Troy, that is (yet another) real beauty!  Serials on the Mac keys are all mixed up.  The first ones were in the five thousands ;-)  Mine is 5925.

John, K1JD, will be over about 0100z, and we will be on 40M soon after.  Good prop to CA around then.
