Just dug out my old Vibroplex...it's got the flat bar like a Lightning bug,
a narrower base than standard, a very simplified damper, just a u-channel
and a wheel with a sloppy-loose axle. Trying to figure out what model it
is...wondering if it's a Zephyr?

Hello all.
I am looking to restore a J36 Bug, I need the main arm with its flat
spring and flat pendulum, and wonder If anyone has bits they
would sell? Please email me personally at: john(at sign)
morsemad.com
P.S. I do not want to buy the Vibroplex parts! They are chrome plated
and would not look right on a 1940's dull nickel plated bug.

John,
If you buy the Vibroplex parts YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE BRIGHT
CHROME!!..You can have a plating shop do it in nickel. I took my Blue
Racer Deluxe to my local plating shop and had them strip and replate
the base, mainframe and damper. Total charge....$30 dollars, US. Your
pendulum should be much less. I am somewhat doubtful you will find
someone sitting on a pendulum. If the pendulum is any good, the key is
probably still in action. If the key is "far gone", you'll no doubt
have to have the pendulum replated anyway. Of course, this is only my
opinion/logic. Good luck, and hope to catch you on the air soon.

Getting back to getting on the air, so learning the code again, I
wasn't very fast anyway, just get my general.

So dusting of my bencher and Vibroplex and have a couple questions.

1. I assume the Thumb ( right hand ) is always used for dashes.

2. My Vibroplex is chrome and a little worn, but works ok as far as I
can tell.

It has a total of six adjustment, is their a detail sheet that talks
about each indivigual adjustment ??

Thanks

Hey Bob and the gang;

Yeah,.. there is something at the Vibroplex web site... some more stuff in qst (do a literature search at the ARRL website) and finally some bits a pieces recently in the archives herein if my memory serves me right. Plus I am sure some google searching would also be useful.

One important thing that is somewhat elusive, even in the printed material, is the description of how to set the "dwell" timing of the dash movement. Since your elements are best formed with primarily a wrist rocking movement and (much, much) less finger movement than when you manipulate a dual-lever iambic paddle, the last step in setting up a bug is to set both the spacing and tension of the dash travel. To get the right "dwell" so the dahs are naturally longer sounding (than the dits,) neccessarily means these dash settings will be different than for the dot movement. i.e. When you are rocking your wrist back and forth the same amount from right to left and left to right the dash contacts need to mate longer. We can achieve this by setting the travel of the arm when making a dash shorter and then putting the right amount of tension so your dash contacts "dwell" longer with the same amount of back and forth wrist movement.

At least that is my story and I am sticking to it !! (And....I hope that helps you out somewhat.)

Actually, the norm is for the thumb to control dits since it is more
agile than the side of your finger.

I'm assuming by "Vibroplex" you mean a bug, but you're not really
specific about it. In any case, one explanation on adjusting a bug is
here -- <http://www.telegraph-office.com/pages/bug_adjust.html>

You'll get more answers as time goes on. There is a lot of
expertise in this group, but traffic is a little slow.

Getting back with some results on the plexiglass
bug that I built. And by-the-way, thanks to all
that emailed me with ideas. Very helpful.

The bottom line......the thing is VERY temperature
sensitive. The spacing of the dots varies greatly
with a difference in room temperature. Well, it is
plastic.....not real metal.....Grin!

So, looks like it is back to the drawing board.

I will say, that a plexiglass straight key or a
plexiglass side-swiper (Cootie key) is easily a
do-able project, but the plex bug has problems.

Thanks again for the helpful comments!

That being said, could this green (doesn't look green in the picture)

I think it might be refinished. However, I saw one sell on ebay last
week from a guy in New Zeeland that had the same blue-green color. On
the bottom view of his bug the paint didn't cover everything and you
could see crackle black with a stamped logo or number that looked
military. I will try to post the image I grabbed from ebay to the
N4HNO folder. The grayish Bunnell in that folder looks alot like
mine, but I know many companies made them during the war. I thought I
read somewhere that Vibroplex employees sometimes had custom colors.

My name is Dave and my call is KB3MOW. I'm located in north-central
Pennsylvania, about 20 miles from the NY State border. I've been a
ham for 41 years and still love the hobby!

I've posted a picture to the photo section titled "KB3MOW Keys". It
shows the three keys currently on line in my shack. I'm not a
collector, but use these all on a regular basis.

On the left is a 1960 Vibroplex bug. Obtained this in a trade for my
old Brass Rcer when I decided to get back to a bug.

The middle bug is my Coffin Bug! I had one of these as a novice in
1967, and chose to revisit my CW roots! Got this one in trade for a
spare antenna tuner I had laying around.

On the right is my favorite, even though it's not a bug. It's an old
Navy Flameproof straight key that belonged to my Grandmother. She was
a Western Union telegrapher in the southwest many years ago, and
carried this key with her from station to station. She was a
supervisor, and filled in for operators when they were sick or
terminated.

Not one of these keys is a colectors item, but I wouldn't trade a
single one of them for new ones!

Glad to be part of the group, and looking forward to following the
threads here.

Great stuff, Dave -- glad you're here.

The list is a little slow, but there are many good people here with
lots of good info.

Hi, Group -

I took a little (?) time this past weekend and made some short
video clips of some homebrew bugs in action. They are on YouTube -
the easiest access is via http://wb9lpu.googlepages.com/keyvideos .
More will follow as time permits - I tend to do things in batches.

And a hearty welcome to our newest members.

Wonderful work Rich!

Will you again have some of these keys on display at Dayton (the W1TP
booth if I remember correctly)?

Hi, Jack -

Thanks for the kind words.  I will certainly be hanging around Tom's booth, but I don't know yet what keys I will bring.  I will also have some on display at the "Show and Tell" night at the QRP ARCI event (after hours in the Holiday Inn in Fairborn - the other side of the city).  A few more videos are in the works, but it may be a while - I am building some MicroBugs with new design features that are taking a lot of time.
