ARGENTINE TANGO WORKSHOPS
With Alberto and Valorie
Friday-Sunday, Nov 12-14, 1999
===o0o==========o0o========o0o===
At:
White Street Arts Center
304 1/2 East White Street
Champaign, IL 61820
(ph) 217-359-1862
White Street Arts Center is proud to welcome Argentine Tango Master
Instructors Alberto Paz (the TangoMan) and Valorie Hart (La Mariposa) of
Planet Tango, Sunnyvale, CA.
Alberto and Valorie are well-known for their smooth, creative and
elegant improvisational dancing style, their enthusiasm and patience,
and their knowledge of Argentine Tango. They are continuously invited
to all the major tango communities in addition to the ones they
have helped establish and nurture across the U.S.
________________________________
[W1] DANCE TANGO TONITE
FRIDAY Nov. 12, 7:30-9:00 PM
A workshop designed for those wishing to dance Argentine Tango for
the first time. Also recommended for dancers wishing to understand
the concept of improvisation, and for teachers and prospective
teachers interested in learning the methodology used by old masters
in Buenos Aires. Men and women are drilled with movements that
emphasize posture, balance and musicality. A series of useful
figures provide the bases for understanding displacements on the
line of dance, changes of direction, and stationary patterns.
________________________________
[W2] ALL LEVELS ARGENTINE TANGO CLUB STYLE
SATURDAY Nov. 13, 1:00-2:30 PM
A workshop focusing on the rhythm of Tango and the ability to
improvise on a crowded dance floor. A must for those who find
it difficult listening and dancing to the music. The only way to
dance in the clubs of downtown Buenos Aires.
________________________________
[W3] ALL LEVELS ARGENTINE TANGO FLOORCRAFT
SATURDAY Nov. 13, 3:00-4:30 PM
A workshop designed for all levels of experience. Men and women
will learn technical aspects of balance, posture and body alignment.
The techniques taught in this workshop will allow women to dance
with confidence with any and every man, and will help men develop
the confidence and finesse to communicate with any and every woman
on the dance floor. Women are sensitized to recognize and respond
to La marca. (La marca is sometimes loosely translated as "lead";
it is a sophisticated two-way communication unique to Argentine
Tango.) Men are taught how to use La marca. Building on the concepts
of the "mark and response" and the structure of the turns, men and
women will understand the building blocks for Tango improvisation.
________________________________
[W4] CLUB STYLE VALS CRUZADO
SUNDAY Nov. 14, 5:00-7:00 PM
(Sunday Practice Session follows at 7:00-9:00 PM)
The rhythm of the vals is used to develop figures and patterns for dancing
in a crowded floor. This is the "creole" version of the traditional
ballrom vals adopted by the Argentine orchestras at a time when they wanted
to appeal to the middle and upper class. It is a very popular dance
complementary to the Tango at the milongas in Buenos Aires.

About Alberto and Valorie
Alberto grew up in the streets of Buenos Aires, and Valorie is an
American. Alberto is also a writer, historian and lecturer on
Argentine Tango. Valorie is an artist who possesses a natural
sensitivity for the Argentine Tango, the music, the dance and its
culture. They publish El Firulete, The Argentine Tango Magazine.
Alberto and Valorie teach the time-honored craft of improvisation as
it is socially practiced in clubs and salons of Buenos Aires. Accordingly,
they encourage both new and experienced dancers to work together in
classes and workshops, to learn to dance on the spur of the moment,
to follow the music rather than prescribed steps, and to create
their own patterns and figures from a set of simple, basic templates.

And don't miss this...
Friday 29 October there will be a short Argentine Tango Dance at The Regent
Ballroom,
from around 11:00 to 11:30.
This is the interlude between the ballroom dance (8-11) and Salsa (11:30-1:30)
I've noticed that David is starting to play the tangos earlier (e.g.
10:45), so it is worth it to be there early.
Also, the Halloween salsa dance is always terrific! Another cool masquerade
opportunity!!

The Guerrilla Parlour Ensemble will be holding forth this Friday
evening (Oct. 22), at the Bread Company in Urbana, 8-10pm. It
probably won't be listed in the Octopus, so please spread the word.
Also, an advance warning: on Nov. 3rd, we'll be opening up at the
Highdive for 8 1/2 Souvenirs, a really, really cool band from Austin,
TX. This should be great fun, so mark your calendar!

Dates: Thursdays, Oct 21-Nov18
Location: Channing-Murray Foundation (corner of Oregon and Mathews in Urbana)
Class Fee: $30

= Joe and Carlotta =
On Sunday, Oct 24, Carlotta and I will start a two-week class.
(Scheduling prevents us from doing a 4-wk class this month.)
ARGENTINE TANGO TECHNIQUE
At White Street Arts Center (See below for address.)
Sundays 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Dates: 10/24 through 10/31
Fee: $20 for the 2-week course
Intermediate class for tango dancers who have already had a
beginning-level class. Partners are encouraged but not required.
We will rotate partners.
The class will focus on technique, teach some steps you probably
don't know, and present the concept of parallel versus crossed walking
systems.
Switching between parallel and crossed feet walking, and knowing
which system is implicated in the figures you already know, is an
important basis for improvisation and musical expression in tango
for the men. This will also give a clear model for how to "construct" a
danced tango in phrases with a beginning, middle and end.
***
PRACTICA
Come practice your tango with other beginning and intermediate dancers
in the community. Ask questions from the experienced dancers.
Trade steps with others.
Open practice session for Argentine Tango
Every Sunday 7:00 - 9:00 PM
Admission: $3 per person

HI Joe!
I've been struggling to adapt to a new teaching schedule and

OSVALDO BARRIOS Bandoneon
Born in Argentina and completely dedicated from the time that he
was a small child, to this musical instrument named the

importantly as an artist. Moving to the city of Los Angeles,
California over 30 years ago, where he accompanied the most
legendary of Tango figures from the history of the musical genre,
such as: Libertad Lamarque, Mariano Mores, Ruben Juarez,
Amelita Baltar, Alberto Podesta, Roberto Goyeneche, Horacio
Deval among others. He also authored and performed as part of

Also, I have set up a local tango listserv that will eventually take
the place of my hand-made mailing list for tango news and announcements.
I'm still testing it.
Anybody can post to this listserv by sending email to cu-tango@egroups.com.
To subscribe, send a message to cu-tango-subscribe@egroups.com or go to
the e-groups's home page at http://www.egroups.com/group/cu-tango/
(BTW -- Apologies if those of you who have already joined it got the
Practica announcement twice.)
