Shabbat Shalom, CRUSY! This week's RGB D'var Torah is from Ilana Sufrin!

Shabbat Shalom, my dear lovely CRUSY,

This week's parsha is Vayishlach, or "he sent". Vayishlach is a relatively famous chapter in the Torah in which Isaac dies, Jacob and Esau see each other for the first time in fourteen years, and Jacob wrestles with the angel who renames him Israel. As Jacob and Esau reconnect, Jacob literally bribes Esau for forgiveness. The world was a simpler place back then. I don't know about y'all, but I can personally say that my sibling disputes cannot be solved by a gift of 200 she-goats and 20 he-goats; 200 ewes and 20 rams; 30 milch camels with their colts; 40 cows and 10 bulls; 20 she-asses and 10 he-asses.
A less well-known but more controversial story this parsha is the tale of Dinah. For those of you who don't know, Dinah is Jacob's only daughter. Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, chief of the area Jacob was living in, fell madly in love with Dinah. Shechem, true to biblical form, gave into his urges and raped Dinah. He then asked Jacob for Dinah's hand in marriage. Jacob agreed to give away his defiled daughter as long as all the men in the area became circumcised.
Simeon and Levi, two of Dinah's brothers, were more concerned with Dinah's honor. On the third day after the mass circumcision, they killed every single man under Shechem's father's control. Jacob responded by bemoaning his sullied reputation in the area. Why wasn't Jacob more supportive of his daughter, and were Simeon and Levi correct in avenging their sister?
In researching the issue, I was amazed at how little commentary I could find about Dinah's raping. Almost every single scholar chose to focus on Jacob wrestling with the angel. Even wikipedia only devoted three sentences to interpreting, in my opinion, the most emotionally scarring event in Vayishlach. So I am forced to draw my own conclusions.
Did the rabbis and scholars of old tend to ignore women's issues? Absolutely. But does that mean that the ancient Israelites didn't value their women? Absolutely not. As one of four daughters in my family, I know just how important women are within the Conservative Jewish movement. We have our own rituals, our own mitzvot, and our own special connection to God and Judaism in general.
We just have to look a little harder to find empowerment. I am not recommending that everyone in CRUSY become raging feminists. We are not, after all, the English department at Mt. Lebanon High School (inside BGUSY joke). But I do urge every one of you to ask yourselves where you would be without your mothers, your sisters, and more than half of the CRUSYite population.

-Your Alumni Liaison,
Ilana Sufrin

Shabbat Shalom, CRUSY! This week's RGB D'var Torah is from Molly Mangel!

Last week, we read Parshat Toldot, where Jacob tricks his brother Esau, and has to face the consequences of his immature actions. He is forced to flee from his father's home, but he has not completely learned his lesson.
In this week's Parsha, Vayeitzei, Jacob arrives at Uncle Laban's house. He needs a place to stay, so Laban has him work as his shepherd. Soon, Jacob falls in love with Laban's youngest daughter, Rachel. Laban promises Jacob that he will be allowed to marry Rachel after he has worked for 7 years.
After 7 long years of work, Jacob and Rachel are wed at last, but not all goes as planned. Laban sneakily marries his oldest daughter, Leah, to Jacob instead! The next morning, when Jacob realizes his new wife is Leah, he asks Laban if he can still marry Rachel. Laban agrees, but Jacob must work for him for another 7 years. Jacob knows that Laban's deal is the cost he has to pay from his own actions against Esau, so he agrees. After working 7 more years, his labor finally pays off. Laban gives him the woman he originally wanted, Rachel.
Jacob began as an immature teenager who tricked his family members to get what he wanted. Now, when a family member cheats him, he finally understands how hurtful his own tricks were. Through his newlyfound maturity, he accepts the consequences that he deserves. Jacob's new attitude lets God know that soon he can accept the responsibility of becoming the father of the Jewish People.

Shabbat Shalom, CRUSY! This week's RGB D'var Torah is from Josh Siegal!

We all know the story of Jacob and Esau.  The epic battle for the Isaac's blessing.  But, in case you missed that day in Hebrew School (or was sleeping), let's bring it into the 21st century.  Jacob was the intellectual one of the two.  Esau... the meat head.  In high school, Jacob was captain of the speech and debate team, high honors student and one of those 36er's on the ACT.  Esau on the other hand was captain of the football team, wrestling state champion and didn't really focus on his grades.  Jacob always cared about other people, yet Esau always put himself first.  Now, the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 game just came out.  Jacob and Esau were fighting for the rights to the Xbox Live account.  Jacob called it, but Esau called seniority on the account.  One day, Esau was very hungry after football practice.  Jacob, being the intellectual that he was, traded his bowl of Easy Mac for the rights to the Xbox Live account.

Now, was this a fair trade? Was it right for Jacob to trade a mere bowl of Easy Mac for the Xbox Live Account?  Jewish Law dictates that a trade must be fair for both sides, and that if a trade was unfair, it must be undone at the request of the wronged.  So, why was it okay for one of our forefathers to wrong his brother?

It simply wasn't, Jacob made a wrong decision in selling his Easy Mac for the Xbox Live account.  But what can we learn from this? We can learn that people make mistakes.  People do the wrong thing, they make the wrong decisions sometimes.  Even Jacob, one of the Big Three of the Torah made a mistake.  Sure, Jacob wronged his brother, was he opportunistic? Absolutely, but he was a teenager.  This is simply a case of sibling rivalry where Jacob came out on top...  But then, Jacob also tricked his father into giving him the blessing instead of Esau.  Wronging someone twice is even worse.  I think the Torah, in this case is showing us what not to do.  Every action that we do has consequences.  Jacob had to run away because Esau was very angry.  In conclusion, the Torah shows us that is wrong to "wrong" a person, and if you do, there are always consequences to your actions.

Shabbat Shalom,

Dear CRUSY,

This weekend at Fall Kinnus, applications will be given out for BuckUSY's SA/TO
Dance 2010!

But what is SA/TO Dance?

It is a mini-convention Winter Wonderland in Columbus on January 29-31!

The weekend will included:
*Kabballat Shabbat on Friday night
*USY service on Saturday morning followed by lunch, ruach, and Social Action
programming
*Formal Dance at the JCC Saturday night followed by an awesome lock-in at the
synagogue!

And the best part is: all of CRUSY is invited!

Last year, the cost was about $75, much less than a normal convention, and all
proceeds will be going to SA/TO!

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Love, your Co-Chairs:

Dear CRUSY,

Fall Kinnus 2009 is coming up this weekend and I’m sure you’re all very excited! Make sure to remember things like your sleeping bag and Shabbos clothes, but also don’t forget some books to donate at this convention!

There will be a book drive for an organization called the Invisible Children.

Invisible children is an organization that helps kids that have been kidnapped from their homes and forced to serve in the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) or kids that have been displaced from their homes. Kids kidnapped into the LRA, headed by Joseph Kony, are forced to kill each other and kill citizens of Uganda, Sudan, and The Congo. Girls who are kidnapped are raped by commanders of the LRA. Most are disowned from their families and are forced to raise children (from the rapes) by themselves. Over 1.8 million citizens of Uganda have been displaced by this war, the longest running war in Africa.

These books, in part with a program called Schools for Schools (which receives books like novels, children’s books, text books, cook books and sells them to send money to Uganda to help these children), helps to establish new schools in Uganda, because if there were more schools for these children to attend, less of them would be forced to join the LRA.

PLEASE BRING ANY BOOKS YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO THIS ORGANIZATION WITH YOU!!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you next week!
Talia Hirsch,

2009-2010 SA/TO Chairperson

Hey guys,

So we've worked hard in planning a really fun (and yummy) senior activity. In
order for it to workout everyone is going to need a flashlight. If you could all
please bring a flashlight this weekend and also if you can, bring extra in case
someone forgets. That will make the night really fun and we can't wait to see
you all this weekend J

On a side note, those of you who ordered sweatshirts are going to need to bring
$20 to the convention, if you're not coming please talk to someone who is who
can bring your money and bring home your amazing, outstanding, intimidating,
mind boggling, eXtreme senior sweatshirt!
See you soon!

Love, your senior programmers, Elana and Emily

Hey Everyone!
Remember, tomorrow is the membership part of USY awareness week! It's so important that you all participate, NOT ONLY BECUASE YOU COULD WIN (!!!!!!!) but also because CRUSY needs more members (sad but true). So remember, print out the scavenger hunt and give it to me during fall boards!

Hey Guys! J

As we all know that USY awareness week is here and each day is devoted to a different part of USY. The most important part in my opinion, (some would argue) is happening on Wednesday! The MEMBERSHIP part!

As we all know, in these hard economic times members are scarce, but we need to prove to international USY that CRUSY is a force to be reckoned with! We need an increase in membership and this is the program that will help you do that!

I am here to present you with a challenge. A MEM/KAD SCAVENGER HUNT!

Shabbat Shalom, CRUSY! This week the RGB D'var Torah is from Eli Kaufman!

This week's Torah Portion is Parshat Vayera.  In the Parsha, God tells Abraham that he will destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.  Abraham bargains with God over destroying the cities.  Abraham, in an attempt to save the city, asks God to spare the city of destruction if fifty righteous people can be found.  After God reassessed the situation, Abraham's logic of sparing the city backfired, as there were not fifty righteous citizens in the cities.  Abraham decided to bargain again with God.  Abraham asks God to spare the city of destruction if there are ten righteous people in the cities.  God once again reassessed the situation and to Abraham's surprise, there were not even ten righteous people in the cities.God decided to destroy the evil cities and Abraham saved his relative Lot, and his family.  Lot's family consisted of his two daughters and his wife.  As Lot's family is exiting out of the city, they were told to not turn back and face their former home.  As they exited, Lot's wife turned around.  In an instant, she was turned into a pillar of salt.

This sounds familiar, doesn't it?  A place was full of sins and God destroyed it.  If we go back a couple of weeks, we read about Noah, his ark, and how God destroyed the world.  The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a watered down version of the great flood.

In the story of Noah, God spared Noah's family.  In the story or God destroying Sodom and Gomorrah, God spared Abraham's family.  These two instances are very similar.  I had never connected these two stories together, but you learn something new everyday.

Shabbat Shalom,

'09-'10 CRUSY Co-Service Coordinator,

Eli Kaufman

Hey CRUSY!!!

With Fall Kinnus in less than 2 weeks, you should all be super excited!!!!!!!!  You should be even more excited because this year at Fall Kinnus there will be a new program called Mix ’n Match!!  What is Mix’nMatch, you may ask?  It’s a way that you can be paired up with a couple of other people at Fall Kinnus based on your answers to a few simple questions and make lots of new friends.  You’ll have a chance to hang out with the people you were paired up with and have a ton of fun. Here’s the catch:  It costs $5 to get your results!  But the good news is that 100% of that is going to SA/TO!  So if you’re curious to see who you’ll be paired with, fill in the answers to these questions and email it to me at hannah@... or go to the SA/TO page at http://crusy.org and click Mix ’n Match Form!  It won’t take you more than 5 minutes!!!

Shabbat Shalom, CRUSY! This week's RGB D'var Torah is from Becca Sigal!

This week's Torah portion, Lech Lecha, begins with G-d telling Abram to go forth from his father's house to the land that he will show him. Following this, G-d promises that "I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth Shall bless themselves by you." This is the basis for the rest of the parshah. Because Abram leaves his father's house with his family, he comes across challenges throughout the story.  One of the challenges he faces while wandering is when he gets to Egypt. As he and Sarai enter Egypt, Abram knows that because Sarai is beautiful, the Egyptians would likely kill Abram and let her live. Because of this, Abram asks her to pretend that she is his sister. This works for some time, until the Pharaoh finds out that she is, in fact, his wife, not his sister.

The most important part of this week's parshah is the covenant that G-d makes with Abram. G-d says "Walk in My ways and be blameless. I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will make you exceedingly numerous." At this time, he changes Abram's name to Abraham because he will be "the father of a multitude of nations." He also changes Sarai's name to Sarah. Part of the covenant made between G-d and Abraham is the well-known ceremony of circumcision, which is still performed today.

Shabbat Shalom,

This week's RGB D'var Torah is from Ben Hutchinson!

Hey CRUSY.  This week's parshah is that of Noach, which mostly focuses on the flooding of the world, though it interestingly also contains the story of the Tower of Babel – two of the more famous stories from the Torah.

In the very beginning of the parshah we find God pretty wrathful, not uncommon those days.  What struck me as odd, however, was the source of His ire.  The Torah says,

11. Now the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth became full of robbery.

12. And God saw the earth, and behold it had become corrupted, for all flesh had corrupted its way on the earth.

In other words, the crime for which the entire Earth was flooded wasn't one of the ones we typically consider particularly reprehensible in the eyes of God.  God wasn't worked up about murder, or deceit, or even heresy – one of His favorite choices throughout the Torah.  No, it was because people had engaged in robbery and had participated in what is loosely translated as sexual deviancy.  This was so widespread that even animals were mating with other species.  Now, I can definitely see God having a problem with robbery.  And I understand the biblical God having a big problem with sexual deviancy.  But does it merit destroying the entire world?  I mean this is a God who just last week let Cain off the hook for having murdered his brother out of spite.  Cain killed his brother and was protected for the rest of his life but the world got a taste of thievery and a few *insert favorite childhood animal*s fornicated with bears.  In all seriousness though, this contradiction is difficult to reconcile.

So at this point, it is important to ask what the real meaning is.  What lesson are we supposed to take from this story?  I should hope that we do not read a Torah portion and our main conclusion is that sexual deviancy in animals really, really upsets God.  No, I think that the real lesson to be taken from this portion comes from what God says AFTER the flood.  First, he speaks to Himself, saying,

21. And the Lord smelled the pleasant aroma, and the Lord said to Himself, "I will no longer curse the earth because of man, for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth, and I will no longer smite all living things as I have done.

This, however, needs to be taken in contrast to his later quote,

5. But your blood, of your souls, I will demand [an account]; from the hand of every beast I will demand it, and from the hand of man, from the hand of each man, his brother, I will demand the soul of man.

6. Whoever sheds the blood of man through man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God He made man.

7. And you, be fruitful and multiply; swarm upon the earth and multiply thereon."

When you put these two ideas together, it seems to me that God is acknowledging that man is flawed and that this was in part because of the way in which God created us.  But, at the same time, God still has high expectations of us, and he is watching over us to make sure we do not sin too grievously.  While God accepts that sin exists in humanity as a whole, he asks – well, more like commands – every individual to do right on their own.  And, in return for a safe and prosperous earth, this doesn't seem all that difficult after all.

                Shabbat Shalom.

Ben Hutchinson,

Heschel Chairperson '09-'10
