Hi,

The Orpington and District Archaeological Society are having their open days next weekend, Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th September 2008 from 2 - 4:30.   This is at the Scadbury Manor dig, details below.    This is your chance to see some real archaeology.     This was the birth place of Sir Francis Walsingham (b 1532), the founder of the British Secret Service.    It is also where the warrant was raised in 1593 for the arrest of Marlow the playwright, author of the notorious "Jew of Malta".   Sir Thomas Walsingham IV of Scadbury was supposed to be his patron.   The fungus season has started, as I cut down quite a few last Thursday when taking the lawn mower around the site.   Word around says you might even find the Fly Agaric in the Scadbury Nature Reserve, immortalised as the red nose of Rudolf the Red nosed Reindeer.  Some fungi are far more poisonous than psychedelic.   Neither the Orpington and District Archaeological Society nor the London Borough of Bromley will take any responsibility what so ever for any Pagans getting chased by reindeer, or for sceptics getting chased by irate Pagan Gods.

Orpington and District Archaeological Society
Scadbury Moated Manor (Chislehurst) - Open Weekend
Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th September 2008 from 2 - 4:30
The Postcode of Scadbury Farm is BR7 6LN

Excavations in progress
Ruined remains of medieval manor house
Bookstall & refreshments

Self-guided tours of excavations from 2 pm to 4:30 pm

No need to book in advance - just come on the day

The tours start at the point where the estate circular footpath in Scadbury Nature Reserve passes the moated site.

The nearest access from the road is via the footpath between 12 & 14 St Paul's Wood Hill, turning left along the circular footpath (5 mins walk). This entrance is not suitable for disabled access - use the Perry Street entrance. The footpath can be uneven and muddy in wet weather. The main entrance to Scadbury Park is in Old Perry Street (with parking).

There is an entrance in Perry Street itself - this is a 20 mins walk to the site.

Some parking is available for elderly or disabled people - use the Perry Street entrance for disabled vehicle access.

See <www.odas.org.uk> for more details.
---------------

Sir Francis Walsingham (c. 1532 – 6 April 1590) is usually remembered as the "spymaster" of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Walsingham is frequently cited as one of the earliest practitioners of modern intelligence both for espionage and for domestic security. He oversaw operations which penetrated the heart of Spanish military preparation, gathered intelligence from across Europe, and disrupted a range of plots against the queen, securing the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. Walsingham was one of the small coterie who directed the Elizabethan state, overseeing foreign, domestic and religious policy, and the subjugation of Ireland. He worked to bring Scotland and England together. Overall, his foreign policy demonstrated a new understanding of the role of England as a maritime, Protestant power in a global economy. He was an innovator in exploration, colonisation and the use of England's potential maritime power.

If your fungal knowledge leaves a little to be desired, why not join a woodland fungal foray to gather a basket of delicious edible mushrooms.  Fungal forays are taking place at Scadbury Park in Bromley on Monday 15th October at 10am, Railway Fields in Haringey at 10am on 28th October, at Hainault Forest on Sunday 21st October and at Richmond Park on Saturday 3rd November.

Kind regards - Edmund.

Dear all who attended PF London's Gaia-Fortuna Convention on saturday,

On behalf of the Pagn Federation London, I'd like to thank you all for the huge support you gave us, in attending and making the Convention a successful one.

Our thanks go to the ritual teams - Caroline Wise & friends who did the Opening ceremony of attuning us to Fortuna,  and to Hern's Tribe & Tribe of Avalon for their  colourful, symbolic and wild closing ritual ritual- with the 4 Elemental Goddessess, Hern, animals, plants and humans! our sincere thanks. Our sincere thanks  go to fantastic talks/performances by John `Crow' Constable (drumming/singing), Sascha Cooper (Gothic bely dancing with audience participations) and Bacchus Border Morris (dancing).

Big thanks go to our convention contibutors- Caroline Wise, Ken Rees, Vivianne Crowley, Geraldine Beskin,  Marl Jeoffroy, Phyllis Pointer, Caroline Robertson, Michael Bingas and Meredith- for their indepth talks on a varied subjects- with additions such such slides/illustrations, music and audio/video clips!    These are certaintly taking PF London Events into the world of multimedia presentation..!

And ofcourse- our thanks go to Ed & April Richardson, Mark McCann, Jaqueline Anne Woodward-Smith and Marielle Holman- for their  well attended popular workshops - on rune songs, working with Fortuna, the Bee Goddess and ofcourse Dance in ritual.

Special mention must go to Mark McCann- who's conversation and mention of the Goddess Fortuna (many months ago at Secret Chief) that gave me the idea for the `Fortuna' theme of this convention!

No pagan convention would be comlete without Craft stalls- and their registration fees provide a huge part of the funds that support a convention of this scale.  So we are very grateful to Stall holders - (Moonlight magic, Mark Jeoffroy, Tamesa London Circle, Gwen Davies, Scorche's Pyrography, Hedgewitches Kitchen, Oak Ash and Thorn, Hedingham Fair, Rusty Unicorns, Foxgloves Crafts, Libra Aries Books, Reddog, Magicka Realms, Goddess Pages, Hands for Health and Tarot organisation (by Ania)- in place of Deadly Glamour.
A special mention to Stall holders of Oak Ash & Thorn- who kindly lend us their laptop for Vivianne Crowley's illustrated Talk, when we had technical problems.

And last, but not least- big thanks to Atlantis Bookshop & Treadwells bookshop for publicity and sale of tickets, to University of London Union- for hire of their venue, to PF London Regional coordinators for their pre-convention support, and to Events Team members for publicity and devlopment.

My personal and most sincere thanks go to the Convention Team-  Jean Williams who - only a month ago was very seriously ill at hospital but now fully recovered- whose drive and trust gives me stregth to keep going,  Paul Newman (Treasurer), a very pregnant Clare, Scott (SELF organiser), Mike Stygal (interfaith), Andrew Trosak, Reggie Kwan- for being Stewards and helpers on the Resgistration/Ticket Stand at the front end, to Colin for Photography, to Vathani for additional photography, carrying extra weights, and to my mother Rani for help preparing all the Convention programme sheets/stapling/ driving me about etc.

Finally- special thanks to  to my friend Reggie, to my partner April and to my sister Vathani, for months of moral support and tolerance when I went through periods of tough times, despair and doubts! I am ever mindful of the Gods & Goddesses who live in our minds..and nudge me now and then!

May Fortuna smile upon us..and may Gaia nurture and support us all..

Hi,

Well, spammers are a problem. Usually I delete them just as soon as a
spam message comes up. (I have just deleted the last spammer).

Membership is automatic just because it seemed the best thing to do
when I set up the group, and because I don't know how to moderate.
Maybe I should. What does everone else think?

Hi Paul,

given the nature of  pagan e-groups (ie people's privacy etc) , I'd say moderating/ screening  the initial joining is essential.   Otherwise, anyone will join in, get allour ID's/ e-mails and ..by the time we delete them, security is already breached..

There's a way to set these .. I need to refresh my mind.. I'll double check abd mail you off list with step by step process..

After that, every new member (poetntial) will send a request that comes to list-owner/ moderators  (you..)   You could also set it so they have to write a few sentences about themselves and why they want to join the list  .. Then you check it and  authorise it..  (very simple.. done with one e-mail.. I'll tell you about it..)

Hi Paul,

Sorry I didn't make last night! Had a whole days business training so was rather knackered and the rain didn't help....
Hope it went well.
Can we discuss the ritual for Samhain as I need to get it out to people - any news from Alex? If not then N can start learning his lines????

Talk Soon BB

It may be a bit early for an event due to happen in May but this event is of limited size and is ticket only so early booking may be advisable if you are interested.

The date of the event is a Bank Holiday Monday.

Phoenix Rising

An experiential workshop and rite
Monday 4 May 2009
(10 am-5.30 pm - Central London)

Vivianne Crowley, Caroline Robertson and Caroline Wise
invite you to explore the magick, myth and symbolism of the Phoenix

Phoenix Rising is a one-day participative workshop and rite for Magicians, Witches, Pagans, Goddess worshippers and others with some magickal and ritual experience to share ideas and to explore creatively the magick and symbolism of the phoenix.

Through discussion, visualisation, divination, talisman making, chant and ritual, we will uncover the meaning of the phoenix for our magickal and spiritual practice in order to experience the transformative power of its symbolism and energy to take us forward on the next stage of our personal journey.

Wear loose, easy clothing for the workshop and bring a simple robe (or special dress) to change into for the rite: red/gold, black or white or whatever you have. Body paint, masks, artwork, symbols, ritual artefacts, poems, songs and musical instruments appropriate for the occasion are also welcome.

Places 20.00 (spaces strictly limited)

- Tickets from Treadwell's Books, 34 Tavistock Street, London WC2E 7PB or phone 020 7240 8906 or email  info@... to pay via debit/credit card.
- Otherwise, make cheques payable to Starfire Publishing Ltd and send to BCM Starfire, London WC1N 3XX or pay by PayPal through starfire.books@....

"I am the Bennu (Phoenix), which is in Anu (Heliopolis), and I am the keeper of the volume of the book of things which are and of things which shall be."  (The Egyptian Book of the Dead. Chapter XVII)
The Phoenix is a legendary bird with beautiful fiery coloured plumage. It lives in Arabia near a cool well. Every morning as the Sun rises and dawn breaks, it immerses itself in the cool clear water of the well and sings such a delightful and sweet song that the Sun God stops in his chariot to listen. Every 500 years, the phoenix constructs a nest of cinnamon twigs that ignites and consumes the bird to ashes. From the ashes, a new phoenix arises, wraps the ashes in an egg of myrrh and takes them to the Egyptian city of On or Heliopolis, the City of the Sun, where it deposits them on the altar of Ra.

Hi All,

I had a very serious meeting with our Funders yesterday- and my specific project (employment training for tamils) is now on an urgent recovery.. So I  simply can not gurantee my presence at moots for a few months. I have to work late often.

For monday's moot, , I'll make sure our friend Reggie is there to meet n greet any new comers..   He's as good (or better) than me in witt, humour and socialising :-)
