The "Top Seven" since 1980

I am in the middle of writing What Are They Saying About the Historical Jesus?
for Paulist Press. Unlike my earlier WATSA Parables, I cannot "cover the
waterfront" in HJ studies (e.g., Evans's 1996 bibliography has over 2000
references). I have only 30,000-35,000 words, so I need to focus on the
(approximately) seven most important HJ scholars/works since 1980. Some others
might deserve a brief "honorable mention," but space is limited.

I have picked my list, but it would be great to hear other opinions to make
sure that my own view isn't too idiosyncratic (e.g., I find Theissen more
important than Wright).

It would help me and the book if listers could suggest their own "top seven
since 1980" with a sentence as to why you picked them, with perhaps a couple
"honorable mentions." You can send it to the list or to me privately at
dgowler@.... Many thanks in advance for your input.

I am sure that this discussion has occurred before on this list--probably many
times--but I am an intermittent member. With some recent additions to
scholarship (e.g., Dunn), perhaps the older discussions deserve to be updated.

With every good wish,
David

Barack Obama, Nov 2, 2004: If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who
can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior
citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between
medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my
grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without
benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's
that fundamental belief--I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters'
keeper--that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our
individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. "E
pluribus unum." Out of many, one.
