Hi, everyone.
Let's quantify Gary Smith's premise a bit and carry it through to its
logical conclusion, just to see how absurd it really is. And to make
the calculation really simple, let's use estimates of 5,000 years,
and the weathering away of 500 feet of rock. As my 9-year old son
(though not, perhaps, my 7-year old son) can tell you, do the
division and this would be 1/10 foot, or 1.2 inches, per year.
Now go to your nearest cemetery. Looked at the raised lettering on
any rock headstone. Gary Smith's premise is that the lettering on
rock headstones should weather away completely in about four months
(1/3 of a year), and that most headstones (less than 3 feet high)
should weather away entirely to nothing in about 30 years. In other
words, according to Gary's premise, if young earth creationism was
true, then most of us should be able to personally witness within our
lifetimes our grandparents' headstones erode away to nothing.
Compared to the real world, this is one of the typical absurdities of
young earth creationism.
Gary, it's time to wake up and smell the coffee. Would you like some
Folgers?
Regards,
Todd S. Greene
