WROTE:

Hi Jonathan,

A religion is a belief system, so if you concede that evolution is a
religion and you do not want creation taught is schools because it is a
religion then the same goes for the "religion" of
evolution. That is the difference.

----SPENCER---As I read it, Jonathan Griffin was not literally conceding
that evolution was a religion but was doing so arguendo in order that the
discussion could move to the postive evidence for Creationism.
----Of course, neither the fact of evolution nor any of the several theories
of evolution are a religion in any sense of the word. Where that arose was
in an attempt by the legal teams hired by Creationists to wedge Creationism
into the school curriculum. The Creationists had lost several times in
Federal Court with the courts ruling that Creationism was not scientific and
that it was only a religious view. The legal strategists of the
Creationists decided to try to label evolution as a religion and then argue
before the courts that Creationism should not be excluded from the public
schools because evolution was a religion also. However, the federal judges
saw through this sham and dismissed the argument as specious.
-----Since Christian denominations representing more than 97 % of
Christians world wide accept evolution without any problems, it would be
strange indeed to suggest that evolution was a "religion" when people
belonging to another religion already accept evolution. It would be
analagous to calling relativity a religion or medicine or gravity or weather
religions. They just are not religions, and evolution is not a religion.
-----In any case, I concur with Jonathan Griffin that I would like to see
the positive evidence supporting Special Creation and not just snipes at
some aspect of some theory of evolution.

Respectfully,

Spencer James
