Most worthy and noble citizens of Cragmere.
I most humbly beseech thee, consider with great care to which
movie you do pledge thy loyality, for that same favor may
influence the choice of young and impressionable minds.
And so it is that I put forth the name of The Princess Bride
as worthy of thine favor.
My first argument is that comedy and tragedy must be combined
in the correct portions to "maketh warm the herte".
My second argument is, that by means of excellent effect the
remembrance of said movie, doth linger. "My name is ....."
And finally, it doth touch the heart of young and old,
all in equal measure.
Submited this day for your consideration,
reann

Thank you for the reminder, Lady Halima. All events, meetings etc. until the
end of August have been put into the Cragmere calendar here at our egroup site.
I would like to remind one and all to check the calendar periodically, though it
sends out reminders prior to events to all Cragmere egroup subscribers (one day
prior to meetings, one week prior to events). Anyone can add events to the
Cragmere calendar or transfer or add events to your personal egroup calendar.
Isn't this site awesome!

Unto the denizens of Cragmere does Halima send greetings.
Milord Llew asks, "... should speaking forsoothly be the goal of our
tongues? Or should speaking in period?..." In two parts I make reply.
Tis true that not all are skilled in the languages, but as we are a
medieval society, does it not behoove us to make the attempt to speak
Early Modern English? Methinks few, if any, wouldst be able to carry
conversation to a great extent (with or without bucket), but can we not
still make that attempt? (Betimes I am happy unto sufficiency that mine
ears hear not of things post-1600 when at feasts, whilst bedazzled by
blades, bards and bosoms.)
(Bluntly, the SCA is about attempting to recreate the skills, technologies,
and some of the better customs of the middle ages; I think that includes
the speech patterns. ***However... I appreciate anyone's attempt to speak
Early Modern English... ***But I am just happy to not hear about things
like cars and computers when we are all dressed up and at an event. I can
talk about computers anywhere, but the medieval stuff... NOT anywhere!)

It does, however, speaking forsoothly is more like poetry and therefore more
beautiful and ageless. (Comme Shakespeare). I should know, it's a bugger to
do the speech, laddie. And I've been around for 13 years.
Glad you enjoyed Egils so much. June Faire was fabulous as well.

Greetings unto the Shire of Cragmere,
May I say, without sounding gushing and foolish (uh huh), that my wonderful
family and friends continually delight and make me proud to be of Cragmerion
descent. Truly, my friends, you have style. The idea of speaking
forsoothly as much as possible is wonderful(and Lady Antonia could sure use
practice even after 13 years of being in the SCA-can't you tell!!!)and I
know this news-page will be a fabulous hit with many. Yes, I know I AM
gushing, but who can help it when faced with such magnificence?
I may live in Seagirt, but I am still at least half Cragmerion.

Greetings my fellow Cragmereiens from Rhys.
I must say that one SCA-ish movie I must emphasize has to be "Monty Python
and the Holy Grail" when you look at the early history of AnTir the
tremendous impact (the numerous times I've heard 'RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!') of
quotes that have become so much of the kingdoms vocabulary. And may the gods
never forget the great flying ...COCONUT that has become one of our great
beasts' of legend.
Other SCA-ish films I would include is:
-the 3-part 'Ivanhoe' mini-series.
For the swishy-pokes:
-Richard Lester's 'The Three Musketeers' &
-'Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge' (both were made in 72/73)
-'Cyreno d'Bergerac' with Gerard d'Pardieu.
Also we should include:
-Kenneth Branaugh's 'Henry V' (to see what knighthood should be).
-and Awwnnyy's 'Conan the Barbarian' (or what knighthood is).
Now another question I raise, out of interest, for the folks of Cragmere
is...
ARE WE GOING TO BE PUTTING UP A WEB SITE ??
It would be great if we could have pictures up of Cragmere in all its
splender and glory, and not be put to shame by the gentle vikings (note the
obvious oxymoron) of Ravenspeak.
Well those are my thoughts, how bout you?

To the genteel lords and ladies of Cragmere, one and all:
To the genteel folk of Cragmere I bid "Good day"
In the matter of a letter received from the most honourable
Llew Silverhand and his comments contained within on speach.
M'Lord Llew writes:
>But I would like to ask one question for the masses... should speaking
>forsoothly be the goal of our tongues? Or should speaking in period?
And my response:
Full and most joyest blessing be apon thee if speaking in period is
among thy talents. But I pray thee, in using Middle English,
Gaelic or even Latin - take pity on a poor soul such as myself,
and provide a translation. Tis only late period English that
is easily understood by me. Should we learn period languages?
Of course! But for myself I have only but begun with a few
short poems and songs. And muche practice in the speche.

Greetings unto my Friends and Friends to be,
On the cragmere@egroups site you will find a small link called "contacts".
I have modified the table a little to suite us better (Sorry Annie.. you're
gonna have to go back and add a little more.... if you want. ;) )
This table includes:
First Name, Last Name, Office or Role, SCA Name, Phone Number, Street
Address, City, Email address, Interests, Hobbies
You may fill in as much or as little of this as you would like. I have
asked someone that is not on the list to go to the url that displays all
this information and they told me they could not see any of it... meaning
the information we place there is private and only viewable by the members
of the cragmereian list.
Also.. the difference between interests and hobbies is an interest is
something you don't do that you are interested in and a hobby is something
you do do ( I assume you are interested in that also. ;) ).
As a suggestion.. perhaps we could enter the info for all cragmereians..
(minus the info that they wish not to be displayed). This way when we need
ideas for events or if someone wishes to run a art & sciences night on
something we could see who would be interested. Or it could act like a
Shire phonebook. I believe a list like this already exists but it may be
handy if it's available to all cragmereians.
Again.. it's only a brain storm not-thought-out idea.. so please feel free
to shoot it down or puff it up as you see fit. ;)
Also.. there is a calendar for the group(which has a few entries already..
thanks Annie. :) (I think that was you.) ). There is also a personal
calendar ( i haven't tried this yet ). AAAAnnndddeth.. there is a links
section. If you enter a link I would ask that you give it a meaningful
name that someone else that sees it would know what they should expect when
they click on it.
There is also a files section (called the vault.. which has already been
broken into by Lord Mikhail Heimdallson. Go take a look. ;) ) You may
upload files or pictures for all to share.
If you have any questions please email me.. and I will give you an answer
resembling the truth. ;)
And now my business is done. I thank thee all for the patience thou has
extended in putting up with my ramblings.
Written by both of my hands,
Llewyn
PS Please forgive my somewhat sense of humour in my writings.. I suffer
from a condition of excessive personality. ;)

Hailsa Cragmereians!
I send greeting and good tidings.
Knowing that soon you will host a hammer workshop, I have deposited a pic of
said workmanship, in your files directory, crafted here at my home, under the
direction of Triton (my lady made this one)
It awaits ducttaping, but does plainly show the construction elements...
And to the maker of this list, I gift you this:

Keenly he crafted it, and keeps it still

Greetings my Friends and Friends to be,
I do agree with M'Lady Reann. A skill must be learned and a tongue must be
practised for either to do any justice.
But I would like to ask one question for the masses... should speaking
forsoothly be the goal of our tongues? Or should speaking in period? I
care not either way though I'm sure once in a while a good ole slip 'o the
tongue may do us a wee bit o good, laddie!
*cough*
But I might also be wrong... perhaps speaking forsoothly dost encompass all
manners of the english language. If someone knows, I pray that you would
enlighten me. :) <--- forsoothly happy
On a side note... Egils was a complete blast. Apparently Egils is a person
(I know not who) of some Norse background. (Mythical? Perhaps). I have
an event copy (minus the last two pages - waiver and registration form)
that I would gladly submit to the masses to learn a little more or that event.

My Lords and Ladies, pray attend,
It is my pleasure and my duty to lead us all in better understanding of
a gentler way of speach.
From all manner of diverse materials am I drawing together knowledge
whereby we may be enriched.
I do urge you to find upon your shelves manuscripts bearing words
arranged in this genteel way. Bring them forth to our meeting that we
may aquaint ourselves with masterly words penned in such flowing speech.
As you prepair for the comming gathering, do take into mind thr first

Unto the good gentles of Cragmere, fair greetings.
Indeed, milady Reann speaketh in wisdom. I, too, wouldst appreciate the
opportunity to practise mine tongue, that in time t'will flow trippingly
off the tongue. Be there others of like mind?
And as one of the SCA, wouldst truly be appropriate to speak, nay, write
in chivalric tones of ultimate courtesy and respect.
For those who wish to visit upon matters not Cragmerian, might I suggest
that after initial contact, those few talk privately? I, too, have been
recipient to talks of boots and net stockings, when my needs be far more
prosaic.
Milady Reann speaketh of length, and there, too, I agree. Once the
writer has written twenty or thirty lines, perhaps that should be
submitted to the newsletter... Or to consider it. Many of us must needs
read many missives, and shorter be more pleasurable in most respects.
Thanks be unto thee, milord Llew, that thou seest fit to take upon
thineself these labours of writing.

To the genteel lords and ladies of Cragmere, one and all:
Good day and warm wishes.
I beseech thee, let us give thanks to Llew Silverhand for this service
unto Cragmere,
that distance shall not hamper our exchange of news. As thou knowest, we
are beginning
anew, and can set the tone and quality of this newsgroup to our own desires.
I would then, like to put forth the following ideas for your
consideration.
1. That the tone of our postings convey courtesy and respect.
2. That we shall attempt to write forsoothly. For truly, tis in the act of
writing,
that we may pause to consider our words. Thus to practice, that with
the passing
of time, it shall become a simple thing to do.
3. That the principle purpose of this listserve be: to convey or to request
information,
relevant to matters medieval and of interest to Cragmerians.
4. That our letters be of moderate length and to the point.
Milords and miladies, I thank thee and I do bid thee adieu.
