This forum is a result of the Greater Philadelphia Region Solutions Community Power Conference on Peak Oil & Global Warming held on 9/30/2006.

This conference addressed two profound challenges facing our communities and the world at large: peak oil & global warming–both of which are the result of extracting, processing and burning fossil fuels for our energy, food and transportation. There are three principle sources that informed our solutions-based conference:

1. "Plan B 2.0", by Lester Brown & The Earth Policy Institute. This book posits that we need to shift from a fossil-fuel based, car-centered, throw-away economy to a new Eco-Economy powered by clean renewable energy, moved by a diverse transportation system and run by reuse/recycle processes.

2. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC, the folks who envisioned all those highways since the 50s) has emerged under new & visionary management. They have issued a "Post Global Economic Development Strategy" for our region that includes: clean renewable energy development, mass transit systems & urban organic farming. They envision our communities becoming a model eco-region and thus "Eco-Branding the Delaware Valley". This is very encouraging to see an interstate, inter-county, intercity future growth-planning agency so well informed and foresighted.

3. "The Power of Community" This film tells the story of Cuba’s own "Peak Oil" crisis and how they survived it. Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in 1990 and had to figure out immediately how they were going to feed their population and create a new low-energy society. Cuba has given us a working model of how our communities can survive & flourish by converting to sustainable energy, food & transportation systems.
